If you break line of sight in Grand Theft Auto VI and the police keep searching, do not assume the wanted state has reset. Preview reporting describes a more persistent system in which officers can remember your appearance, vehicle, clothing, face, and companions. Treat the escape as two phases: first break active pursuit, then remove or confuse the information police are using to identify you.
Why losing sight of the police may not clear your wanted state
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told GamesRadar, in coverage of an IGN interview and preview, that the team wanted to move beyond the older pattern in which police were lost and then immediately forgot the player. The stated goal is a system with “a bit more persistent memory.” That means a clear road or a hidden corner may end direct contact without ending the search.
Preview footage reportedly shows a six-slot wanted display and, after direct contact breaks, four red stars. The interpretation that those stars represent police still hunting rather than actively chasing is based on the preview coverage, not a published final mechanics guide. The footage does not establish how long the search lasts, how large the search area is, or exactly what event clears it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical distinction is important:
- Active pursuit: officers are directly following, blocking routes, or responding to your visible position.
- Search phase: you are no longer in continuous contact, but police may still be looking for someone matching the information they recorded.
- Fully clear: the game has ended the wanted response. The available previews do not define a universal timer or HUD rule for this state.
Plan for the second state instead of driving straight back into open streets. Your goal is not merely to hide the car; it is to make the remembered description less useful.

What police can remember in the reported GTA 6 system
Nelson’s comments and the reported extended-look sequence point to several recognition cues. They are previewed features, not a complete list of every possible trigger.
| Information police may retain | What it means for your escape |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | A car or bike seen during the incident can remain an identifying clue. Changing vehicles may remove that particular match. |
| Clothing and appearance | Breaking line of sight does not necessarily make the original description irrelevant. |
| Face or identity | Police may be searching for a person, not simply the last vehicle location. |
| Companion or pair | If officers know the protagonists are together, splitting up can reduce their perception of the pair, according to Nelson. |
| Reported crime | A witness or alarm must report the crime for the wanted response described in the preview to begin. |
Do not generalize the witness-and-alarm explanation into a confirmed rule for every crime, camera interaction, or mission. The reporting establishes that a crime needs to be reported in the described scenario; it does not document every possible way the game can create a wanted response.
Step-by-step: how to stop the search from finding you
1. Break direct contact without assuming you are clear
Use the first escape route that removes officers’ immediate view: a turn into a dense block, a covered passage, a garage entrance, or another route that prevents a continuous visual chase. Once the units are no longer beside you, stop treating the moment as a victory. The reported system is designed to preserve information after contact breaks.
Avoid making a wide, predictable loop around the same streets. If police are searching from your last known position, returning through that area gives them another chance to match the same vehicle and appearance.
2. Leave or change a vehicle that has become the identifier
The extended-look sequence reportedly shows the protagonists switching vehicles. The new vehicle is not recognized by the police vehicle that had been looking for the original one. This is the clearest practical response when the car itself is the most obvious clue.
- Move out of the officers’ immediate view before stopping or switching.
- When the situation allows, abandon the known vehicle or transfer to another one.
- Continue away from the switch point rather than waiting beside the original car.
- Assume the change removes one recognition cue, not that it guarantees an instant wanted-state reset.
The preview does not establish whether every vehicle change works identically, whether ownership or damage affects recognition, or whether a mission can prevent the action. Treat it as a reported tactic, not a universal exploit.
Rank #2
3. Split up when police are tracking the pair
Nelson says separating can lower police perception of the two protagonists as a single group. If officers have seen both characters together, remaining side by side gives the search one obvious target. Splitting up can force the response to resolve around less information.
Use this only when the mission objective and character control permit it. The reporting does not promise that separation clears a wanted level, and it does not specify how far apart the characters must be or how long they must remain separated. Its value is reducing a recognition cue, not producing a guaranteed reset.
4. At three stars in the city, get off the streets
Nelson’s specific advice for a three-star city pursuit is to leave the streets and continue on foot through alleys. He says a very fast vehicle or sports bike can sometimes work, but that staying in a vehicle is often difficult at this level.
This changes the decision from “How fast can I go?” to “How little useful information can police get?” A vehicle on an open road is visible, follows predictable lanes, and can be tracked by multiple units. An alley network gives you more corners, shorter sight lines, and places where the original vehicle is no longer present.
- Use the vehicle to reach a dense area or alley entrance, not to circle the city indefinitely.
- Break sight of the pursuing unit.
- Exit and continue on foot through connected alleys and side passages.
- Change direction after each major turn instead of running in a straight line toward a conspicuous exit.
- Do not return immediately to the abandoned vehicle.
These steps reflect the situation Nelson described; they are not a confirmed rule that every three-star chase must be solved on foot. A very fast vehicle or sports bike may still be viable in some layouts.
5. Use Focus to locate police when the chase radar is empty
The reported interview says police do not appear on the mini-map radar during a chase and become visible when the player uses Focus. The available material does not establish a universal button, key, controller binding, or platform-specific input, so use the Focus function shown by your final game settings rather than copying an unverified control instruction.

Use Focus as a check before crossing an open street or leaving cover. If officers appear, remain concealed or take a different route. If nothing appears, continue cautiously; the absence of a radar marker is not proof that the search has ended.
Choosing the right response for your situation
| Situation | Most useful reported response | What it addresses | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are no longer being chased, but the same car was clearly seen | Change or abandon the vehicle when safe | Vehicle recognition | Whether the change alone clears the wanted state |
| Police saw both protagonists together | Split up if the mission permits | Group recognition | Required distance, duration, and success conditions |
| Three stars in a dense city area | Leave the vehicle and use alleys on foot | Open-street visibility and vehicle tracking | Whether a particular alley network is sufficient |
| Units are hidden from the chase radar | Use Focus to check for them | Situational awareness | Final controls and whether all police states display identically |
| A witness or alarm has not reported the crime | Do not assume a wanted response has started | How the response is initiated | How every crime and camera interaction is handled |
None of these options has been ranked by controlled testing. Select the action that removes the strongest clue police currently have rather than following a fixed “best” sequence.

Driving back through the last known area
Breaking sight and then returning along the same roads gives searching units another opportunity to match your vehicle and appearance. Move away from the area before attempting a wider route.

Assuming a new hiding place erases your description
A secluded corner can hide you physically while leaving the remembered vehicle, clothing, or face unchanged. Hiding and changing the information police use are separate tasks.
Staying in a car during a difficult city pursuit
Nelson specifically identifies three stars in the city as a situation in which vehicles can be hard to use unless they are exceptionally fast or are sports bikes. Continuing on open streets may expose you repeatedly.
Expecting an exact countdown
The available preview reports provide no verified search timer, cooldown, radius, or universal re-entry rule. Do not rely on a fixed number of seconds or blocks.

Inventing a control input for Focus
Bindings can vary by platform, control scheme, and final release. The supported claim is that Focus reveals police who are absent from the chase radar, not which button activates it.

The strongest supported points come from pre-release comments by Nelson and an extended-look sequence reported by GamesRadar. They support a more persistent police memory, recognition of the vehicle and people involved, a vehicle-change example, the option of splitting up, the three-star alley recommendation, and the use of Focus to reveal police during a chase.
Several details remain unconfirmed. No reviewed source supplies a numeric search radius, a fixed search duration, a cooldown, an exact method for re-entering the wanted state, a universal camera rule, or mission-by-mission exceptions. The six-slot display and four red stars are observations from preview coverage; their final meaning may change before release.
Because the game was discussed through pre-release reporting rather than a complete official manual, final behavior, platform controls, and even individual mechanics can differ. Verify the final in-game prompts and any official guide before treating one tactic as guaranteed.
A compact escape checklist
- Break direct line of sight, but keep treating the situation as a search until the game clearly ends it.
- Move away from the last known location instead of looping back.
- Change or abandon a known vehicle when it is safe to do so.
- Split up if police have identified both protagonists as a pair and the mission allows it.
- At three stars in the city, favor alleys on foot over open-street driving unless you have an exceptionally fast vehicle or sports bike.
- Use Focus to check for police because they reportedly do not remain on the chase radar.
- Do not depend on an invented timer, radius, button layout, or guaranteed reset.
Bottom line for a persistent search
When police keep looking after you disappear, change what they know rather than only where you are. Break contact, replace a recognizable vehicle, separate from your companion when appropriate, and use alleys on foot for the reported three-star city situation. Check hidden units with Focus, and treat every tactic as preview-era guidance until the final game documents its exact wanted and search rules.
