First identify what is failing: continuous two-way sync, a one-time import, opening a Google Drive sharing link, or moving a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file into another app. These are different workflows, and each has different causes. In particular, Nextcloud’s Google integration imports files once; it does not keep Nextcloud synchronized with Google.
Start by identifying the workflow
“It doesn’t sync” can describe several problems that look similar from the outside. A file might not appear in another service, a collaborator might be unable to open a link, or a document might arrive in a format the receiving app cannot edit. Before changing settings or choosing an alternative, name the operation that should have happened and the direction it should have gone.
- Continuous synchronization: changes made in one service are expected to appear in the other on an ongoing basis.
- One-time import: files are copied from Google into another service as a migration or handoff, without later updates being kept in step.
- Shared-link access: a person follows a Drive link and is expected to open a file in a browser.
- Document exchange: a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file is expected to open or remain editable in a different office app.
Write down the source, destination, exact open-source app and version, account type, and expected result. A feature that works in one direction or with a personal Google account does not necessarily support the reverse direction or a Workspace account.
Why the distinction matters
Google Drive integration is not a universal switch that makes every app compatible with every Drive workflow. An app has to implement the relevant connection and obtain authorization. Separately, a Workspace administrator can restrict third-party access, a sharing link still depends on the visitor’s identity and file permissions, and Google-native documents have different handling from ordinary files.

That means an apparent sync failure may not be a broken connection at all. It may be a one-time importer being mistaken for a live sync feature, a blocked app authorization, a link opened under the wrong account, or a format mismatch. Diagnose the point of failure before trying another app or moving data.
Check whether the app actually supports the operation
Look for a documented Drive API integration
Google’s Drive API provides operations for uploading, downloading, searching, and sharing files. An open-source app must actually implement the relevant operation, and the user must complete the app’s Google OAuth authorization. The existence of a Google API does not mean that a particular app supports it, or that it supports every Drive operation.
Check the app’s own documentation for the exact workflow it claims to provide. Look for whether it connects to Google Drive, whether it transfers files in the direction you need, and whether it promises ongoing synchronization or only import/export. If documentation describes a migration or import, do not assume changes will continue to propagate afterward.
Separate integration from a browser-based link
An app connection and a Drive sharing link are separate routes. A browser link asks Drive to authorize a visitor to access a particular item. An app integration asks the user to authorize software to perform supported actions through Google’s API. Fixing a link permission will not create an app integration, and reconnecting an app will not necessarily grant a recipient access to a shared item.

Nextcloud’s Google integration is a one-time importer
Nextcloud’s Google integration supports personal Google and Workspace accounts for migration, but its project documentation explicitly describes the operation as a one-time import: “Note that this is a one-time import and will not keep Nextcloud in sync with Google.” Treat it as a way to bring files across, not as a bridge for ongoing two-way synchronization.
If you imported files and later changes in Google do not appear in Nextcloud, that behavior is consistent with the integration’s stated scope. Decide whether a fresh one-off transfer is sufficient or whether you need a separately documented app workflow that supports continued synchronization. Do not promise live cross-platform sync unless the specific app documents and supports it.
Nextcloud federation is a different feature again. The Nextcloud manual describes federated sharing with other Nextcloud or ownCloud servers. It is not a general federation protocol for Google Drive. Federation can help participants on compatible servers share with one another; it does not turn a Google account into a federated Nextcloud server.

- Confirm the feature: check that the app documentation names Google Drive or Drive API support and covers the operation you need.
- Check the account: note whether the account is personal Google or managed by Workspace. The app’s stated support may differ by account type.
- Complete the app’s OAuth connection: follow the authorization flow provided by that app and confirm that the intended Google account was selected.
- Test the same operation again: use a small, non-sensitive file if appropriate, and check the destination and direction rather than assuming authorization enables every feature.
If the app offers no documented Drive API support, OAuth troubleshooting is not the answer: there may be no Drive connection to authorize. If it does support the feature but authorization was never completed, complete that connection before investigating other causes. Avoid granting access to an app unless you recognize it and understand why it needs Drive access.

For Workspace accounts, check organization policy
A Workspace organization can control whether third-party apps may open Drive files and whether programmatic access through the Drive API is allowed. If the relevant setting is disabled, most third-party apps using the API will not work. A user may therefore be unable to connect an app even when the app supports Drive and the user has followed its authorization flow.
- Establish whether the account is managed by a Workspace organization rather than being a personal Google account.
- Ask the Workspace administrator to review the organization’s third-party app access and Drive API access settings for the affected user’s organizational unit or configuration group.
- Have the administrator confirm whether the specific app and requested access are permitted under the organization’s policy.
- Retry the app connection only after the administrator confirms the applicable policy allows it.
Do not try to bypass organization controls by switching accounts or using an unapproved integration. If the organization intentionally blocks the connection, use an approved route, such as an allowed export or a sanctioned sharing workflow.
For a Drive link, check identity and permissions
A Drive link does not grant access just because someone has its URL. Drive checks the visitor’s authenticated identity against the file’s access-control list (ACL). A recipient who is signed into a different Google account from the one granted access can be denied, even if the link itself is correct.
- Ask the recipient to open the link while signed into the Google account that the owner authorized.
- Have the owner confirm that this account still has permission to the file and that the permission has not been revoked or expired.
- If access still fails, check whether organization-level restrictions affect the owner, recipient, or sharing arrangement.
- Test again with the intended account after the owner confirms the permission.
Use this branch when the failure is a person being unable to open an item in Drive. It does not diagnose whether an open-source app has its own Drive integration, nor does it make a Google-native document portable to another office suite.

For Docs, Sheets, and Slides, account for file format
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files are not handled like ordinary files in the Drive API operations described for uploading and downloading. If the receiving app needs a conventional file rather than a Google-native document, use a compatible export format—for example, an Office format or PDF when suitable for the intended use.
Choose the format according to what the recipient must do. A PDF can be suitable when the goal is to read or distribute a fixed copy; it is not a substitute for collaborative editing. An Office-format export may be more appropriate when the receiving app needs an editable office document, but do not assume all document features will behave identically across suites. If Google-native collaboration matters more than portability, keep the working document in Drive and share it with collaborators who can use that workflow.
Before exporting, ask whether the receiving app supports the Google-native format directly. If it does not, export or download a compatible copy for the handoff. Treat that copy as an exported file unless the specific app documents a mechanism to keep it synchronized with the original.

These options solve different problems rather than offering interchangeable versions of the same service. The right choice depends on whether you need live collaboration, a migration, a compatible server share, a browser link, or a portable copy.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Name the expected operation. Is it continuous sync, one-time migration, opening a browser link, or exchanging a Google-native document?
- Record the app and account details. Note the open-source app and version, the source and destination, the direction of transfer, and whether the account is personal Google or Workspace.
- Check documented capability. Find out whether the app supports the required Drive API operation and whether it claims ongoing sync or only import/export.
- Check authorization. If the app supports the operation, confirm the intended Google account completed OAuth authorization.
- Check Workspace policy if applicable. Ask the administrator whether third-party app and API access are allowed for the affected user or group.
- For links, test the recipient’s identity. Confirm the recipient is signed into the authorized Google account, then have the owner verify that access remains active.
- For Google-native documents, verify format support. Use a compatible export when the receiving app needs an ordinary file rather than a Google-native document.
- Retest only the intended workflow. Confirm whether the expected result is a one-time copy, continuing updates, an open link, or an editable exported file.
This sequence helps locate the failure without treating every problem as a server outage or a synchronization bug. It also prevents a successful one-time transfer from being mistaken for proof that a live connection exists.
What to check before choosing an alternative
If the current route cannot meet the need, compare alternatives on the dimensions that determine compatibility—not only on whether a product page uses the word “integration.” Confirm whether each option supports ongoing sync or only one-time import; ordinary files or Google-native documents; a direct app connection or a browser link/export; personal or Workspace accounts; and a self-managed or hosted service.
Self-management and hosting affect who operates the service, but neither by itself resolves Drive API authorization, Workspace policy, link permissions, or document-format behavior. Similarly, moving files by storage device can create a manual transfer but cannot make a Google connection stay authorized or synchronize future edits. Select a service only after confirming that it supports the exact operation, account type, and direction you require.
