When loneliness starts affecting your mental or physical health, take one manageable step toward connection and seek support if it is severe, persistent, or disrupting daily life. Loneliness is a painful experience, not proof that you have failed socially, and one social activity is not a guaranteed cure. The right response depends on what kind of connection you are missing, what barriers you face, and whether you also need professional care.

Understand what loneliness is—and what it is not

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines loneliness as a subjective, distressing feeling that comes from a gap between the social connections you have and the connections you want or need. It is about how connected you feel, not simply how many people are around you.

Social isolation is different: it is the objective lack of relationships, roles or interactions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that someone can have many friends and still feel lonely, while a socially isolated person may not describe themselves as lonely. Either experience can matter for health.

Loneliness is not a diagnosis, and it does not prove that you will develop a particular illness. Public-health bodies describe statistical associations across groups, not a prediction for one individual. Treat the feeling as useful information about an unmet need rather than as a personal failing.

Three forms of loneliness can require different responses

  • Emotional loneliness: missing a close, trusting attachment, such as a partner, best friend or confidant.
  • Social loneliness: lacking friends, colleagues or other people who share your interests and activities.
  • Existential loneliness: feeling alone or misunderstood even when familiar people are present.

NHS Every Mind Matters also distinguishes occasional loneliness from persistent loneliness. A recent move, bereavement, breakup, illness, study change or caring responsibility can trigger either. Naming the pattern helps you choose a realistic next step instead of trying every social option at once.

Why loneliness can affect mental and physical health

CDC, WHO and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) associate loneliness and social isolation with higher rates of depression and anxiety, cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia or cognitive decline, self-harm or suicidality, and earlier death. These are population-level associations. They do not show that loneliness alone caused a condition or that a particular reader will experience one.

The scale of the issue explains why persistent loneliness deserves attention. The figures below retain the limits stated by the organisations that reported them.

Finding What it means Source and qualification
15.8% of people globally Approximately one in six people report feeling lonely. WHO, 2025; a global estimate, not an assessment of every person or country.
871,000 deaths each year An estimated number of deaths associated with loneliness, also expressed by WHO as about 100 deaths per hour. WHO Commission on Social Connection, 2025; an estimate of association, not a count of individually verified deaths attributed to loneliness.
About one in three US adults Roughly one-third report feeling lonely. CDC, 15 May 2024; the referenced report covered 39 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, so it is not a fully representative global figure.
29% higher heart-disease risk and 32% higher stroke risk Poor social relationships, social isolation and loneliness were associated with these increases. Valtorta et al., 2016, as presented on the HHS Social Connection page (last reviewed 19 February 2025); these are reported associations.

WHO reports higher reported loneliness among young people, particularly adolescents, and higher rates in low-income than high-income countries. Those patterns describe groups and should not be used to stereotype an individual or dismiss loneliness in another age group.

Start with one safe, manageable action

When you feel depleted, a large social plan can be unrealistic. Choose one action that is small enough to complete and specific enough to repeat. The aim is to create a plausible opportunity for connection, not to force yourself to feel better immediately.

Reach out to one person

Send a short message, make a call or ask someone you already know for a brief conversation. You do not need to explain everything. A message such as “I have been feeling isolated lately—could we talk for 10 minutes this week?” gives the other person a clear, manageable request. If a trusted friend or family member is unavailable, consider an old colleague, neighbour or classmate.

A non-response is not proof that you are unwanted. People may be busy, unwell or unsure how to reply. Try another person or channel rather than interpreting one missed connection as a verdict about your worth.

Make contact repeatable

Regularity often matters more than a single intense event. Suggest a weekly phone call, a standing walk, a shared meal or a recurring online conversation. NHS Every Mind Matters recommends regular conversations, while WHO identifies joining local groups and volunteering as possible everyday routes to connection.

Put the next contact on a calendar before the first one ends. A recurring arrangement reduces the effort of deciding whom to contact each time and lets a relationship develop gradually.

Match the action to the kind of loneliness

If you miss emotional closeness, prioritise one trusted relationship and a setting where private conversation is possible. If you miss shared interests, try a class, club, faith community, hobby group or volunteer role. If you feel alone despite being around people, look for environments that allow honest conversation, mutual support or a sense of meaning rather than simply more people.

Identify what is making connection difficult

Loneliness may be intensified by circumstances rather than by a lack of effort. Notice when it is strongest and what changed beforehand. Relevant factors can include bereavement, a breakup, relocation, starting or leaving study, caring responsibilities, illness, reduced mobility, discrimination, language barriers, cost or lack of transport. CDC and NHS guidance both recognise life changes, health challenges and access barriers as relevant circumstances.

Write down the time, place and situation for a few episodes: for example, evenings after work, weekends without transport, or social events where conversation feels superficial. This can reveal whether you need emotional support, more frequent contact, practical help getting to places, or assessment for another health problem.

Choose support that fits your need and circumstances

There is no single best form of connection. Compare an option’s purpose, accessibility, quality and level of care before committing time or money.

Option Best suited to Questions to check
One-to-one contact with a trusted person Emotional closeness, reassurance and regular conversation. Can you speak privately? Can you agree on a realistic frequency?
Club, class, faith community or volunteer group Shared interests, repeated contact and a wider social network. Is the cost, schedule, language, transport and disability access workable? Does the group feel welcoming and safe?
Peer or community support service Practical help, mutual understanding or connection during a transition. What eligibility, confidentiality and meeting arrangements apply in your area?
Primary-care clinician Loneliness alongside sleep disruption, low mood, anxiety, physical symptoms or concerns about an underlying condition. Can you describe when the problem began, how it affects daily life and any medicines or health changes?
Mental-health professional Persistent distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties or thoughts of self-harm. What qualifications, fees, waiting time, language options and accessibility arrangements apply?

WHO and CDC describe social infrastructure—such as parks, libraries, transport and community programmes—as part of the conditions that support connection. If a local option is inaccessible, that is a practical barrier to solve, not evidence that you have not tried hard enough. Ask about low-cost, remote, translated or mobility-accessible alternatives.

Use online contact deliberately

Online communication can provide meaningful connection when distance, disability, illness, work or transport makes in-person contact difficult. Choose interactions that leave you feeling heard and supported: a video call with a friend, a moderated peer group or a shared activity with people you know.

WHO has raised concern about excessive or harmful digital-media use, particularly among young people, and encourages being present in conversations. The useful question is not whether contact is online, but whether it is reciprocal, safe and meaningful. If scrolling leaves you more distressed or replaces sleep and essential routines, set a time boundary and switch to a direct conversation or offline activity.

Know when to seek professional or community help

Contact a primary-care clinician, mental-health professional or local support service when loneliness is severe or persistent, disrupts sleep or normal routines, or comes with worsening anxiety, low mood or other health concerns. Bring concrete examples: how often you feel lonely, what you have stopped doing, changes in appetite or sleep, and whether you are avoiding people because of fear or exhaustion.

A clinician can assess your overall health and discuss appropriate treatment or referral. A community service may help with transport, groups, bereavement, disability access or practical isolation. You do not need to wait until the situation is a crisis to ask.

Support for students in the UK

NHS guidance says colleges and universities may offer wellbeing or mental-health support. Check your student-services office, students’ union or institution website; availability and eligibility vary. NHS also names Student Space and the Mental Health Foundation as student resources, so verify current access directly with those services.

If you may be in immediate danger

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, have made an attempt, or cannot keep yourself safe, contact local emergency services or a crisis service now and, if possible, stay with someone you trust. Crisis numbers and service names depend on country, so use the emergency or crisis route available where you are. If you are supporting someone else, listen without judgement, ask directly whether they are in immediate danger, and help them reach urgent professional care.

Adjust the plan when the first attempt does not help

One conversation, meeting or appointment may feel awkward or may not address the kind of loneliness you have. Review the fit rather than blaming yourself. Was the setting inaccessible, too large, unsafe, expensive or focused on a different need? Try a smaller group, a different time, a one-to-one format or a service with trained staff.

Keep the next step modest: one message, one appointment request, one visit to a library or community centre, or one question about transport or accessibility. Persistent loneliness deserves continuing support, especially when it is affecting your health, even if several early attempts are disappointing.

A practical decision path

  1. Check safety: If you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe, use local emergency or crisis support immediately.
  2. Describe the impact: Note whether loneliness is affecting sleep, routines, mood, anxiety, physical symptoms or ability to study or work.
  3. Name the missing connection: Decide whether you most need emotional closeness, shared interests, more frequent contact, practical help or clinical care.
  4. Choose one accessible action: Contact one person, arrange a repeatable activity or ask a local service about a barrier such as cost, transport, language or disability access.
  5. Escalate appropriately: If distress is severe, persistent or worsening, contact a clinician or support service rather than relying only on self-help.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said on 30 June 2025: “In this age when the possibilities to connect are endless, more and more people are finding themselves isolated and lonely.” The practical response is not to pursue endless contact, but to find safe, meaningful connection and obtain the level of help your situation requires.
