Start by separating two problems: an iPhone that cannot discover or pair with the earbuds, and earbuds that play audio but do not send heart-rate data to a workout app. Keep the earbuds charged, within about 10 meters (33 feet), powered on, and in their model-specific discovery mode. Then pair them from Settings > Bluetooth. If audio works but heart-rate data is missing, troubleshoot the companion or workout app, sensor permissions, fit, and model compatibility separately.
First, identify which connection is failing
Heart-rate earbuds can use several separate pathways. Bluetooth pairing handles the basic relationship between the iPhone and earbuds. Audio routing determines whether music or calls play through them. A sensor and app pathway carries heart-rate readings into a workout application. One pathway can work while another fails.
| What you observe | Most likely area to check | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The earbuds do not appear under Settings > Bluetooth | Power, charging, distance, discovery mode, or an existing connection to another device | It does not establish that the earbuds are defective until model-specific pairing steps have been tried. |
| The earbuds appear but will not pair | Stale pairing records, competing device connections, or the earbuds not actually being in pairing mode | It does not indicate an app-permission problem by itself. |
| They pair, but music or calls stay on the iPhone | Audio routing, an incomplete pairing, or another active output | It does not show that the heart-rate sensor is available to an app. |
| Audio works, but heart rate is absent | Sensor settings, earbud fit, app compatibility, Bluetooth permission, or health-data permission | It does not mean Bluetooth pairing failed. |
Restore the basic Bluetooth conditions
Charge and power on both earbuds
Put both earbuds in their charging case or use the charging method specified by the manufacturer. Confirm that the case and earbuds have enough charge to remain on during setup. Remove the earbuds, power them off and on using the documented control for that model, and keep the case open if the manufacturer requires that for discovery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the iPhone and earbuds close
During pairing, place the earbuds beside the iPhone rather than in a pocket, bag, or another room. Apple describes an approximate Bluetooth pairing distance of 10 meters (33 feet); walls, people, and radio interference can reduce practical range. Pair at close range first, then test normal use farther away.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Turn on Bluetooth in the iPhone settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put the earbuds into the exact discovery or pairing mode listed in their manual.
- Wait for the earbud name to appear under available devices, then tap it.
Do not rely only on opening a companion app. Initial pairing is most reliably checked in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, where you can see whether the phone detects the earbuds at all.
Clear old and competing pairings
Forget the old iPhone entry
If the earbuds were previously connected to this iPhone, remove that saved relationship before trying again:
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the earbud name in the device list.
- Tap the information button beside it.
- Choose Forget This Device and confirm.
- Return the earbuds to discovery mode and select them again from the available-device list.
The exact wording can vary with iOS releases, but the goal is to unpair the saved device and create a fresh pairing record. A manufacturer may also require a separate earbud reset; use only the button sequence published for your model because combinations differ.
Disconnect other phones, tablets, and computers
Many earbuds automatically reconnect to the last device they used. If they connect to another phone or tablet before the iPhone can claim them, disable Bluetooth on that nearby device or remove the earbud pairing there. Then place the earbuds in discovery mode and retry on the iPhone.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
If the earbuds pair successfully with another device but never appear on the iPhone, ask the manufacturer to confirm iPhone compatibility and its current iOS requirements. That comparison distinguishes an iPhone-side problem from an unsupported model or firmware state.
Check app permissions without confusing them with audio pairing
Apple says many ordinary audio uses, including Bluetooth headphones and speakers, do not require an app to have Bluetooth permission. Therefore, denying a companion-app permission does not necessarily prevent basic headphone audio. An app that communicates with a sensor, however, may need permission.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Enable Bluetooth access for the earbud manufacturer’s app or the workout app that needs the sensor.
Apps have had to request permission for Bluetooth functions since iOS 13. If the app does not appear in this list, open it and follow its setup flow so iOS can present the request. Do not grant access to an app that you do not recognize; use the manufacturer’s documented application.

When audio works but heart-rate data is missing
Once audio plays, stop repeating Bluetooth pairing steps and inspect the sensor workflow. Heart-rate transmission can depend on the earbud’s fit, a sensor toggle, the workout app’s support, and permissions for health data. The phone can show a connected audio device while the app receives no heart-rate stream.

Check the earbud fit and sensor contact
Follow the model’s fitting guidance and make sure the sensor sits where the manufacturer expects. Apple’s guidance for Powerbeats Pro 2 says to check fit and connection when readings are poor, dim, or absent. A loose earbud, an incorrect tip, or movement during exercise can prevent a usable reading even though sound remains normal.
Confirm that the sensor feature is enabled
Some models expose a heart-rate setting in their companion app; others enable the sensor only after a workout starts. Look for the model’s sensor, health, or workout-data control and follow its instructions. Do not assume that a setting documented for one earbud family exists on another.
Verify workout-app compatibility
Not every heart-rate earbud sends its sensor data to every fitness app. The app must support the earbud’s data interface, and some models require a particular operating-system version or companion app. Check the earbud maker’s compatibility list before treating missing data as a hardware fault.
Powerbeats Pro 2 workflow
Apple documents Powerbeats Pro 2 as having in-ear heart-rate sensors that can work with Apple Fitness, Health, and compatible third-party workout apps. For a third-party workout app, Apple’s documented flow requires the app to support HealthKit and have permission to read heart-rate and workout information. In practice, check both the app’s Bluetooth permission and its requested Health permissions in the iPhone’s privacy and Health settings, then start the workout through the app’s supported procedure.

This requirement is specific to the documented Powerbeats Pro 2 workflow. It should not be presented as a universal setup rule for every earbud with a heart-rate feature.

Use Apple’s current pairing instructions for the Bluetooth connection, then the model’s heart-rate and HealthKit instructions for fitness data. Confirm the third-party workout app is supported and that its permissions include the data it is trying to read. If readings are faint or intermittent, reassess fit and connection before changing app settings.
Older Jabra Elite Sport units
Jabra marks Elite Sport as discontinued. Its legacy support material includes iOS pairing guidance and identifies Jabra Sport Life as the route for firmware updates. Owners should verify that the app is still available and supports their iOS version before relying on an old setup procedure. A discontinued model may continue to pair for audio while losing current app or service support.

Decide whether the iPhone or the earbuds need support
- Contact the earbud maker first when the model does not appear in its app, the manual’s pairing mode is unclear, a firmware update is required, or compatibility with your iPhone or workout app is uncertain.
- Contact Apple Support if Bluetooth cannot be turned on, the iPhone cannot connect to any Bluetooth accessory, or the accessory maker has confirmed that the earbuds work correctly.
- Escalate the app issue to the workout-app developer when audio is stable, the sensor is enabled, permissions are granted, and the app still does not list or display heart-rate data.
Before contacting support, record the iPhone model, iOS version, earbud model, whether the earbuds appear in Bluetooth, whether audio works, the app name and version, and the exact point at which heart-rate data disappears. This prevents support from sending you through audio-pairing steps when the actual fault is app compatibility.
When replacement is a reasonable option
Replacement should not be the first response to an iPhone pairing failure. First establish whether the phone sees the earbuds, whether another device is monopolizing the connection, and whether the workout app supports the sensor. A new pair cannot fix an iPhone whose Bluetooth cannot connect to any accessory.
If an older model is discontinued, its companion app no longer supports your iOS release, or its sensor data is not accepted by your preferred workout app, a current model with documented iPhone fitness support may be more practical. Powerbeats Pro 2 are one example with Apple-documented heart-rate use in Apple Fitness, Health, and compatible third-party apps; that does not prove that replacing earbuds will resolve an iPhone-side Bluetooth fault.
