If GPS stops giving you a position or route, stay calm and switch to a backup suited to where you are. Drivers should keep moving predictably, follow signs and advisories, and pull over somewhere safe before checking directions or changing the route. Hikers should stop in a safe place, compare their surroundings with a map, and avoid walking farther into unfamiliar terrain. Before setting out, prepare an offline map, a paper map, a compass if hiking, spare phone power, and a trip plan shared with someone you trust.
First, identify what has failed
“GPS is unavailable” can describe different problems, and the right response depends on which one you have. A receiver may be unable to determine its position, a device may have failed, or the navigation app may be showing incorrect map data. A wrong road, address, or business label does not by itself mean the GPS signal is wrong: the device can know where it is while the map is inaccurate.
The U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) groups GPS-performance problems into several broad classes: signal-in-space problems, signal blockage or masking, interference, equipment failures, integration issues, and operator error. Tunnels, dense forest canopy, and indoor locations can block or weaken reception. Separately, GPS.gov describes consumer-map errors such as incorrectly drawn roads, mislabeled businesses, missing roads, and inaccurate street addresses. NAVCEN also notes that a navigation system directing someone to the wrong address or location is likely showing a mapping issue rather than a GPS signal failure.
Use the symptoms to make a cautious first distinction. If one device is affected but another appears to work, the issue may be with the first device or its setup. If several devices or users are affected in the same area, a broader disruption is possible. Neither clue proves the cause; prioritize safe navigation over troubleshooting until you are stopped or out of immediate danger.

What to do if GPS stops working while driving
Keep the vehicle predictable
Do not brake suddenly, stop in a travel lane, or make an abrupt turn because a navigation screen changed or went blank. Continue safely toward a suitable place to stop, following road signs, detours, and local advisories. If the route is uncertain, choose a safe place to pause and get reliable local information rather than improvising a risky maneuver.
FMCSA’s GPS safe-use guidance is written for commercial drivers: it advises following a navigation system’s recommended route while always obeying traffic signs and advisories, including detours and restrictions such as low-clearance bridges or axle-weight limits. That commercial-driver advice is especially relevant to commercial vehicles; for any driver, signs and posted restrictions take precedence over a map display.
Stop before consulting directions or changing settings
Do not enter an address, read a paper map, or adjust the device while driving. Pull completely off the roadway into a safe, legal place before reviewing your route. FMCSA’s commercial-motor-vehicle driver-distraction guidance is blunt about not using paper maps while driving. FMCSA reports that a 2009 real-world driving study found reading a map while driving increased the chance of a safety-critical event by seven times, and writing while driving increased it by eight times. These are figures FMCSA reports from that study, not a prediction of an individual driver’s risk.

Once stopped, use the route you planned before departure, written directions, a suitable paper map, or road signs to decide what to do next. Make any new device input while parked. If you still cannot establish a safe route, remain in a safe location and seek local assistance or information rather than making uncertain turns.
Be cautious with maps in remote areas
A moving map is not an authority on road conditions. Great Smoky Mountains National Park warns that consumer maps can show incorrect roads or dead ends. That is a park-specific caution, not a claim that every consumer map is wrong or a guarantee about map accuracy elsewhere. In mountain or remote areas, combine the map with signs, current advisories, and a route planned for the actual roads you intend to travel.
How to navigate without GPS while hiking
Stop, then compare the terrain with the map
When you realize you are unsure of your location, stop somewhere safe rather than continuing in the hope that the trail or map will become clear. Look for recognizable landmarks, trail junctions, and terrain features, then compare them with a map that covers the area. Avoid guessing a direction across unfamiliar terrain: a seemingly short detour can take you farther from a known route.

If you can confidently identify where you are and the route you came from, retracing that known route may be appropriate when it is safe and clear. If you cannot establish your location or a safe route, do not keep moving just to make progress. Use your trip plan, contact your trusted person or local park staff when service is available, and follow local emergency procedures if there is an emergency.

Use a map and compass only if you know how
A compass is useful when paired with a suitable map and practiced map-reading skills; it is not a standalone substitute for navigation knowledge. If you know how, orient the map and use visible terrain and landmarks to check your position. Do not take an unfamiliar bearing and walk across unknown terrain simply because the compass provides a direction.
Compass bearings can differ depending on whether they refer to true north or magnetic north. USGS illustrates the distinction with a local declination of 10 degrees east and a waypoint directly north. With a compass that cannot adjust declination, the example uses a GPS set to magnetic north and a 350-degree bearing. With an adjustable compass, it uses a GPS set to true north, the compass adjusted for 10 degrees east declination, and a zero-degree bearing. This is an illustration, not a universal setting: use the local declination and the instructions for the particular map and device, and practice before relying on the method in the field.

Conserve phone power
If an offline map is already on your phone or GPS device, use it as one source of information while conserving battery. A phone can lose power, be damaged, or be lost; it is not a complete outdoor safety kit. The National Park Service says to carry a backup paper map and warns that a cell phone is not a substitute for any of the Ten Essentials. Do not separate from your group or abandon the planned route without updating your trusted contact when possible.
Which navigation backup should you use?
Backups solve different problems. Check that a map covers the exact place and route, and consider what happens if your device loses power or the signal is unavailable. A paper map needs no battery but does require geographic coverage and map-reading ability. A compass needs no battery but depends on skill and a map. Road signs can guide a driver locally, but they may not give a complete route. An offline phone map is convenient, but it depends on a working, charged device and map data saved in advance.
| Option | Power and data needs | Preparation and limits | When it is appropriate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offline map on a phone or GPS device | Requires a powered device and map data downloaded before connectivity is lost; a power bank can extend phone use but cannot restore a blocked or disrupted GPS signal. | Confirm the download covers the planned route. Device failure, damage, loss, or depleted power can make it unavailable. | Useful as a ready-to-hand reference when its map and device are working. Drivers should consult or adjust it only after stopping safely. |
| Paper road, trail, or topographic map | Needs no battery or connectivity. | Choose current coverage for the exact destination and activity. Reading it requires practice; a general road map may not provide trail-level detail. | A resilient backup for drivers when parked and for hikers who can match mapped features to the terrain. |
| Compass | Needs no battery or connectivity. | Requires map knowledge and practice; correct use depends on the map, bearing reference, and local declination. | A hiking backup used with a suitable map, not a replacement for one. |
| Road signs and advisories | Do not depend on a phone’s GPS receiver or downloaded map. | May show restrictions, detours, and local directions without providing a full route to the destination. | Drivers should follow posted signs and advisories, even when they conflict with a navigation system. |
Prepare before leaving
For any trip
- Save an offline map before connectivity becomes uncertain. Download an official or trusted map for the area, then check that it covers the planned route rather than only the starting point.
- Carry a physical map. For a national park, the National Park Service advises printing a map from the park website or obtaining one at a visitor center. Choose a trail or topographic map when the extra detail is needed.
- Plan the route and recognizable landmarks. Review the route before departure so that a blank screen does not become your first look at where you are going.
- Share the plan. Give a trusted contact your route, activity, and expected return time. Update that person if your plans or route change.
- Plan for device power without depending on it. Carry spare phone power or a spare battery for downloaded maps, but treat it as a way to preserve phone use, not as a fix for poor reception or a replacement for other safety essentials.
Additional preparation for hiking
Carry a compass with the map and practice orienting the map and taking a bearing before the trip. Understand the map’s north reference and the compass’s declination setting. A baseplate orienteering compass can serve this role when you know how to use it; buying one does not make an unfamiliar route safe to navigate.

Additional preparation for driving
Plan the route before departure and enter destinations or make changes while stopped. Keep a paper map or written directions available as a backup, but consult them only when safely parked. Consider road restrictions and the possibility that remote-area map data may not match actual roads.
How to check a device or report a suspected disruption
Once you are safely stopped, check whether the problem is limited to one device. Review its power, location or navigation settings, software and map updates, and the equipment manual. NAVCEN recommends cycling power, checking settings and the manual, updating software or firmware and mapping, and contacting the manufacturer when the issue appears equipment-related. It does not repair equipment.
If the displayed location is plausible but the road, address, or destination is wrong, treat that as a likely map-data problem and use the map provider’s correction process. If multiple devices or users are affected, a broader GPS disruption may be involved. NAVCEN accepts reports of land-based and maritime GPS disruptions; aviation users have a separate FAA reporting route. A report is not a substitute for navigating safely in the moment.
Recommended Free Tools
For a report, record useful details while they are available, including when and where the disruption occurred, which devices or systems were affected, and what behavior you observed. NAVCEN’s incident form asks for the time of the GPS disruption and where it occurred. Do not delay an urgent safety decision to complete a report.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Driving and the screen fails: keep the vehicle predictable, obey signs, and pull over safely before checking a map or changing the route.
- Hiking and your location is unclear: stop, compare terrain and landmarks with a suitable map, and use a compass only if trained.
- One device fails: after reaching a safe place, check power, settings, software, map data, and the manual; contact the manufacturer if needed.
- The location seems right but the road or address is wrong: suspect map data and use the provider’s correction channel.
- Several users or devices are affected: consider a wider disruption and use the appropriate official reporting route after addressing immediate safety.
