A slow result after a fibre installation does not automatically mean the fibre line is faulty. First test the connection with a computer connected directly to the router by Ethernet. If that wired result is good while Wi‑Fi is poor, work on router location, interference, device limits and coverage. If wired results remain below the speed promised in your contract, give the test record to your broadband provider and ask it to investigate.

This guide is for UK households. It covers full-fibre and part-fibre services, the checks you can do without buying equipment, when a mesh system or replacement router is sensible, and the contractual remedies that may apply.

Check which kind of fibre you have

“Fibre” describes more than one access network. Full fibre (FTTP) runs fibre all the way to the premises. Part fibre (FTTC) runs fibre to a street cabinet and uses copper for the final section. Ofcom explains the distinction in its broadband choice guidance. The technology matters because the address-specific estimate and minimum guaranteed speed in your contract are the benchmarks for a fault, not a generic speed advertised for another service.

Service type Last connection section What to check
Full fibre (FTTP) Fibre to the home, normally terminating at an optical network terminal (ONT) ONT and router power, the contracted estimated speed and minimum guaranteed download speed
Part fibre (FTTC) Fibre to the cabinet, then copper to the premises The contract estimate, minimum guarantee and whether the copper section is affecting performance

Keep the original order confirmation or welcome email. It may show the estimated download speed, minimum guaranteed download speed, technology and any applicable service code. Do not judge the line from a Wi‑Fi test alone.

Do the basic checks before changing anything

Confirm that every required box has power

Check the broadband router, each Wi‑Fi booster or mesh unit and, on a full-fibre installation, the ONT. Look for warning lights or a missing optical/fibre indicator. Restart the router and affected devices; restart the ONT and Wi‑Fi units as well if they are separate. A new installation does not prove that every later Wi‑Fi hop or device is operating correctly.

Rule out an outage or one busy device

Check your provider’s status page or app for a local incident. Temporarily disconnect equipment that is not needed, especially devices downloading, updating or streaming. If only one phone, laptop or television is slow, restart it and inspect its applications, operating-system updates and Wi‑Fi capability. A problem confined to one device points away from a whole-line fault.

Leave equipment available for updates

Keep the router and fibre equipment powered when practical so automatic firmware or security updates can arrive. Record what you found, including any outage message and the time of each restart. Ofcom’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks at its broadband and Wi‑Fi help page.

Measure the connection in a way that separates Wi‑Fi from the line

  1. Take a baseline. Run a free speed test before moving the router or changing settings. Note download speed, upload speed, latency or “ping,” date, time, test service, device and whether it was on Wi‑Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Repeat at different times. Speeds can vary by day and time. Test morning, evening and another period when the household is active. Where practical, use more than one checker and note consistent patterns rather than relying on a single result.
  3. Make a wired test. Connect a compatible computer directly to a router Ethernet port. Use a cable and ports capable of the service speed; a Cat 6 cable is a practical option, but buying Cat 6 will not repair a slow wired service. If the computer has no Ethernet socket, use a compatible adapter whose specification can handle the package speed.
  4. Pause competing traffic. For at least one run, stop streaming, cloud backups, game downloads and automatic updates on other devices. Then repeat with normal household activity to see whether congestion changes the result.
  5. Keep a log. Write down connection type, device, result and what was running. Ofcom describes a direct Ethernet connection as the most accurate practical speed test and recommends keeping evidence; see its personalised speed-estimate guidance.

Latency matters separately from throughput. A line can show a reasonable download rate yet feel unresponsive in video calls or games if latency is high or unstable, so include ping or lag observations in your record.

Interpret the results

Pattern Most useful next step
Wired test near the router is close to the contract expectation, but Wi‑Fi is weak Treat it as a Wi‑Fi coverage, interference or device-capability problem. Apply the free placement and interference checks below.
Wired results are low on several devices and at several times Contact the provider with the log and ask it to test the service, ONT and router.
Only one device is slow Check that device’s software, background activity, Wi‑Fi standard, adapter and location.
Results fall when household activity rises or at busy times Repeat with competing traffic paused. If the pattern persists on Ethernet, report the times and conditions to the provider.

These patterns narrow the likely fault; they do not prove a cause in every home. A provider may still need to check network capacity, equipment or the access line.

Improve Wi‑Fi without buying equipment

Move the router

Put it in the open, off the floor and roughly central to the rooms that need coverage. Brick and other thick walls, water, metal, glass, radiators and fish tanks can weaken or block radio signals. Avoid placing the router beside electrical equipment that can interfere, including microwaves, baby monitors and cordless phones. If it has adjustable aerials, try different orientations. Ofcom’s placement advice is in Improving your Wi‑Fi experience.

Use a cable where stability matters

A stationary desktop, games console or work computer can usually get a more reliable connection over Ethernet than over Wi‑Fi. This is both a useful permanent arrangement and a way to verify that wireless performance, rather than the broadband service, is limiting the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce avoidable radio and device load

Disconnect unused devices temporarily and look for downloads, backups, updates or high-bitrate streaming. Update the router, device and browser software. Test the same room with a second device if possible; an older wireless adapter can be the limiting component even when the router and line are healthy.

Consider mesh only after the wired test is healthy

For a large home with a good wired result but dead zones, a mesh system can extend coverage. Ofcom listed mesh starter packs from £60 to more than £200 on a page published 19 February 2024; that is historical context, not a current price quotation. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions and use the fewest units that cover the required rooms. Too many units can create additional interference or hops and make performance worse.

When replacement equipment is justified

Buy only after the diagnostic split is clear. Equipment cannot fix a provider-side line fault.

Option When it makes sense Limit or check
Ethernet cable, such as Cat 6 To perform a wired test or give a stationary device a stable link Confirm the computer and router ports support the package speed; the cable does not raise a low wired result.
Provider-supplied router upgrade An older router appears to limit Wi‑Fi or device capacity Ask the provider first; an included or supported upgrade is usually easier to configure.
Third-party router You need features or wireless capacity the supplied unit lacks Check compatibility, authentication requirements and support terms before buying. The provider may not troubleshoot third-party hardware.
Mesh system Coverage is poor in several rooms while Ethernet performance is good Compare maximum connection speed, coverage, simultaneous-device capacity, placement, security, setup support and total cost.
Wi‑Fi booster or powerline adapter A specific room remains difficult after placement changes Boosters can reduce speed; powerline performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring.

Report a persistently slow wired service

Your broadband provider is the fault contact even when another company owns the physical network. Send a concise timeline rather than saying only “the Wi‑Fi is slow.” Include:

  • installation date and when the slowdown began;
  • router and, if applicable, ONT status lights;
  • test dates and times, device, Ethernet or Wi‑Fi connection, download, upload and latency;
  • whether the result changed with household traffic paused;
  • restarts, cable changes, placement tests and other steps already tried; and
  • the contract’s estimated and minimum guaranteed speeds.

Ask the provider to check the router, ONT and access line remotely, identify the next repair step, give an expected timescale and explain whether an engineer visit or replacement equipment could incur a charge. Request a case or fault reference and keep copies of correspondence.

Tell the provider about vulnerability

If anyone depends on the connection for telecare, a healthcare device or an alarm, say so explicitly. Ofcom advises asking about priority repair and ways to stay connected during the repair. A mobile hotspot or other temporary connection may be appropriate, but discuss the provider’s available support rather than assuming a particular remedy.

Use the formal complaints route if necessary

Follow the provider’s published complaints process. Ofcom says that after six weeks without resolution, or once you receive a deadlock letter, you can take the complaint to an independent dispute-resolution scheme. Check the current scheme and the provider’s membership before submitting the case.

Check speed guarantees and possible remedies

Most providers follow Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice, but coverage depends on the provider, contract and circumstances. If your measured service is below the minimum guaranteed speed, ask the provider to record that specific breach and explain its remedy. Ofcom consumer guidance describes a 30-calendar-day period for the provider to raise the service above the minimum; if it cannot, you may be able to leave without an early-exit penalty. This is not an automatic cancellation right, so obtain the provider’s decision in writing and confirm that your contract is covered. See Ofcom’s slow-service guidance and the personalised speed-estimate page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic compensation is a separate scheme. Ofcom’s guide describes covered situations such as a reported complete loss of service that remains unresolved after two full working days and a missed engineer appointment. A connection that is merely slower than expected may not qualify. Check that your provider participates and that the event meets the scheme’s conditions.
