If fiber internet is unavailable, first identify every connection that can actually be ordered at your exact address, then compare its real terms—not just advertised speed. Use the FCC National Broadband Map to find reported cable, DSL, fixed-wireless and satellite options, verify each one with the provider, and check cellular service separately if home 5G or a hotspot could work.

Start with the exact service address

Internet availability is tied to a service location, not simply a town, ZIP code or neighborhood. Two houses on the same street can have different technologies, speeds or orderability because of a line boundary, capacity limit, building type or provider rule. Begin with the complete street address, including an apartment or unit number where applicable.

Use the FCC National Broadband Map

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map and search the complete address.
  2. Choose the fixed broadband view and select the location point that matches the home or building.
  3. Record every provider shown, the reported technology and the maximum advertised download and upload speeds.
  4. Use the map’s technology and speed filters to check whether another provider is hidden by the initial view.
  5. Note the data-as-of date displayed by the map. Provider-reported information can change, so an older date deserves extra verification.

The fixed view covers fiber, cable, DSL, satellite and fixed wireless. It is a discovery tool, not an order confirmation or a performance test. The FCC explains: “The National Broadband Map shows internet availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption.” Its listed speeds are maximum advertised speeds reported for the location; they are not a promise that your household will receive those speeds.

Verify that a provider will sell service to your home

After making a list from the map, check every plausible provider through its official address checker or customer-service channel. A map entry can be outdated, subject to capacity, or unavailable to a particular unit. Conversely, a provider may be able to serve the address even when the map has not caught up.

Questions to ask the provider

  • Is the plan orderable at this exact address and unit today?
  • What download and upload speeds are quoted for this service location?
  • Is an installation visit required, and are there construction or access conditions?
  • What gateway, modem, antenna or other equipment is supplied, rented or purchased?
  • What is the regular monthly price after any introductory period?
  • Are there activation, installation, equipment, early-cancellation or other fees?
  • Is there a data allowance, congestion policy or deprioritization rule?
  • What contract, cancellation and equipment-return conditions apply?
  • For wireless service, where must the gateway be placed and what happens if indoor signal is weak?

Provider checkers illustrate why the exact address matters. Verizon states that 5G Home Internet availability depends on the home address. AT&T’s checker can show fiber, IPBB or Internet Air fixed wireless, and it notes that nearby homes may receive different options or speeds. Those pages establish address-specific eligibility, not a universal price or performance figure; obtain current terms during your own check.

Compare the technologies that are actually available

There is no technology that wins at every address. Compare the options you can order against the way your household works: video calls, remote work, gaming, streaming, security cameras, large uploads and the number of simultaneous users.

Technology What to verify What the map cannot establish
Cable Quoted download and upload speeds, price after promotions, equipment charges, data policy, installation requirements and cancellation terms. Actual household performance, current local plan terms, congestion at busy times or affordability.
DSL or other copper Whether the provider still accepts orders at the address and the speed it will quote for that line length and condition. The map’s maximum advertised speed is not a guarantee of the speed in your home.
Fixed wireless, including 5G home internet Address eligibility, gateway placement, indoor signal, installation, data rules and congestion or deprioritization terms. A separate mobile coverage map does not prove that a home plan is orderable or that indoor reception is strong.
Satellite Address eligibility, equipment and installation, plan price, data terms, expected latency, weather impacts and an unobstructed view requirement where applicable. The fixed map identifies satellite as a reported technology but does not supply provider-specific plans, prices or hardware details.
Mobile hotspot or phone tethering Indoor signal, hotspot allowance, throttling or deprioritization, device limits and the cost of adding data. Mobile coverage modeling does not guarantee service inside the building or authorize a residential home-internet plan.

Why download speed alone is not enough

A household can have an adequate download number and still struggle with video meetings, cloud backups or gaming if upload capacity, latency, congestion or data rules are unfavorable. Ask for both download and upload speeds. For interactive work, ask how latency and congestion are handled. For a large family, check whether a data allowance could be exhausted by streaming, updates and camera recordings.

Check cellular options separately from fixed broadband

If no wired service is suitable, investigate cellular home internet or a hotspot, but use the correct coverage evidence. The FCC mobile map represents modeled outdoor or in-vehicle coverage. It does not show indoor coverage, so a strong-looking map color is only a screening signal.

  • Model G5AR-1 Official T-Mobile gateway device
  • Dual-Band WiFi Support Provides reliable wireless connections for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices
  1. Check the FCC mobile view for the carriers serving the area.
  2. Check each carrier’s home-internet address tool, because mobile coverage and a sellable fixed-wireless plan are different products.
  3. Ask whether the gateway can be moved within the home, whether an outdoor receiver is available, and how signal is evaluated at installation.
  4. Read the hotspot or home-plan data policy, including any speed reduction after a threshold and any network-management language.
  5. If possible, test reception at the intended gateway location at different times of day before cancelling another connection.

A phone tether can be a useful temporary connection for light work, but it may be unsuitable as a permanent replacement when several people stream, upload files or use cameras. Confirm the carrier’s current allowance and terms rather than assuming a phone plan’s data can be used without limits.

Calculate the total cost, not just the advertised monthly rate

Write down comparable costs for each address-eligible option. A promotional rate can hide the price you will pay later, while a low equipment fee can be offset by installation or construction charges.

Call providers whose networks are nearby

A nearby network may not appear as an orderable option because the map data is delayed or because an address needs a manual qualification. Ask the provider to check the exact location and explain whether a site survey, line extension or capacity review is possible. Do not treat a neighbor’s successful installation as proof that your address qualifies.

Report missing or incorrect information

The FCC accepts consumer reports when availability information appears wrong. Use the map’s challenge process if a listed provider cannot actually serve the address. If a provider serves the location but is absent from the map, use the FCC’s missing-provider submission path. Include the exact address, the provider’s response, the plan or technology discussed and any order or case number you received. Keep screenshots and emails so the agency can evaluate the report.

Choose a connection for the household’s actual needs

Use a short decision screen after verification:

  1. Need the most predictable wired performance? Choose the eligible wired option whose quoted upload, data policy and total price fit your use, even if it is not fiber.
  2. Need quick installation or have no wired line? Compare fixed wireless and satellite, paying close attention to gateway placement, latency, weather or line-of-sight conditions and data rules.
  3. Need a temporary connection? Consider a hotspot only after confirming indoor signal and the carrier’s hotspot allowance.
  4. Have multiple workable options? Rank them by total two-year cost, upload capability, latency for your tasks, reliability evidence, support and cancellation terms—not by the headline download number.

Keep the map record and provider quotes together. If the chosen service fails to meet the quoted terms, those records make it easier to request troubleshooting or challenge an inaccurate availability claim.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming “fiber unavailable” means no broadband exists: Search all fixed technologies and verify each provider.
  • Treating a map maximum as a speed test: Run your own tests after installation and compare them with the plan’s stated terms.
  • Using a mobile map as a home-internet guarantee: Check the carrier’s residential address tool and indoor signal.
  • Comparing only promotional prices: Record the post-promotion rate, equipment cost and fees.
  • Buying a generic router first: A router cannot create upstream service where no provider network reaches the address; wait until the provider confirms the required equipment.
  • Ignoring upload and latency: These can determine whether calls, gaming, cloud backups and cameras work well.
  • Overlooking data management: Ask about allowances, throttling and deprioritization before moving a busy household to wireless or satellite.

What to document before placing an order

Save the FCC map’s data-as-of date, the providers and technologies it lists, each provider’s eligibility result, the quoted speeds, every recurring and one-time charge, equipment details, installation conditions, data policy and cancellation rules. This checklist turns a vague “no fiber” problem into a verifiable choice and gives you evidence if the installed service or map entry does not match what was promised.
