When fear of violence starts changing where you go, how you sleep, or what you can manage, begin with one question: is there a specific and immediate danger right now? If there is, move toward a safer location and contact the appropriate local emergency or safety service. If there is no immediate threat but the fear is persistent or disruptive, use practical coping steps and arrange support from a health professional or counsellor.

Fear can be a normal response to perceived danger. It can also continue after a frightening event, exposure to violence, or repeated distressing news. People respond differently: some recover without lasting effects, while others develop symptoms that need care. This guide cannot determine the cause of your fear or diagnose a condition, but it can help you choose a safer next step.

First decide whether there is immediate danger

A current, specific threat takes priority over anxiety-management techniques. If someone has threatened you, violence is occurring nearby, or you believe an attack may be imminent, focus on reaching a safer place and contacting the emergency or safety service used in your location. The right action depends on circumstances: leaving may be safest in one situation, while staying out of sight and contacting help may be safer in another.

  • Go to a location that provides meaningful protection, such as a staffed public place or a trusted person’s home, when leaving is reasonably safe.
  • Contact your local emergency number, police, security team, or another appropriate safety service for the country and situation.
  • If calling could increase danger, use a safer available method of communication, such as text or an emergency feature supported in your area.
  • Tell a trusted person what is happening and where you are, if doing so will not expose you to additional risk.

Official guidance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on living with threats of violence emphasizes taking threats and stress seriously, but no single emergency procedure fits every location or event. Do not delay urgent help while trying to identify whether your reaction is “reasonable.”

Recognize when fear is interfering with daily functioning

The NHS describes anxiety and fear through physical, mental, and behavioral changes. You do not need every symptom for your daily life to be affected.

Area Possible signs What disruption can look like
Body A noticeable heartbeat, dizziness, sweating, or breathlessness Needing to stop ordinary tasks, feeling unable to travel alone, or repeatedly checking your body for signs of danger
Thoughts and emotions Tension, persistent worry, fear of the worst, intrusive memories, poor sleep, or difficulty concentrating Being unable to follow a conversation, work, study, or make routine decisions
Behavior and relationships Avoiding situations, trouble maintaining relationships, or difficulty caring for yourself Missing appointments, refusing necessary travel, withdrawing from people, or neglecting food, hygiene, or medication routines

These signs indicate a need to look at the impact on your life, not a diagnosis. Fear may be linked to a current circumstance, a past event, media exposure, another health concern, or several factors at once.

A manageable plan for the next day

1. Name the problem without arguing with yourself

Write one sentence describing what is happening: for example, “I am avoiding the bus because I fear an attack,” or “I cannot sleep after seeing repeated reports of violence.” Separating the trigger, the fear, and the resulting behavior makes it easier to choose a practical response. Do not use the exercise to prove that the threat is imaginary; use it to identify what needs attention.

2. Reduce repeated exposure to distressing coverage

SAMHSA recommends limiting news exposure while keeping enough information to make sensible decisions. Choose one or two brief times to check reliable updates instead of refreshing feeds continuously. On a phone or computer, you can mute nonessential breaking-news notifications, remove news widgets from the first screen, or set an app timer. Keep emergency alerts that are relevant to your area, and do not turn off a safety channel you genuinely need.

3. Use a calming technique that is easy to repeat

The NHS suggests calming breathing or meditation. Try a slower exhale for several cycles, or sit with both feet on the floor and notice five things you can see, four you can feel, and three you can hear. These exercises are ways to lower immediate arousal; they are not proof that a threat is absent and are not substitutes for emergency action.

4. Protect basic routines

Regular meals, sleep opportunities, movement, and ordinary hygiene give your day predictable anchors. NHS guidance recommends regular exercise and meals, while SAMHSA recommends keeping routines. Select a version you can actually complete: a short walk, a simple meal, or a regular time to turn off screens. A small completed action is more useful than a demanding plan that increases your sense of failure.

5. Set one small, achievable target

Fear often grows when every avoided activity is treated as a permanent rule. Choose one safe, limited task that matters today, such as replying to a message, attending a necessary appointment with support, or sitting outside for ten minutes. If the task involves a genuine safety concern, adapt it rather than forcing yourself through it.

6. Tell someone what kind of help you need

Ask a friend or family member for a specific action: staying on the phone while you travel, accompanying you to an appointment, helping with meals, or listening without debating the threat. NHS and SAMHSA both recommend support from trusted people. You can also contact a counsellor, primary-care clinician, or other health professional.

When to seek professional help

NIMH states: “It is important to seek professional help if symptoms do not improve over time or begin to interfere with daily life.” NHS guidance similarly advises seeking medical help when fear or anxiety is difficult to cope with or self-help is not working. You do not have to wait until symptoms become extreme, and asking for help does not establish a diagnosis.

Choose the route that matches the urgency, type of support, and access available to you:

Support route Best fit Questions to ask
Emergency or crisis service Immediate danger, inability to stay safe, or a crisis that cannot wait for an appointment Does this service cover my location? Can I communicate safely by phone, text, or another method?
Primary-care clinician Persistent symptoms, sleep or concentration problems, physical symptoms, or uncertainty about what kind of care is needed Can you assess my symptoms and explain referral or treatment options? Are language, cost, and appointment constraints clear?
Therapist or counsellor Ongoing fear, avoidance, intrusive memories, grief, or difficulty returning to normal activities Do you have experience with trauma or violence-related concerns? What happens in the first session?
Support group or peer service Wanting connection with people who have faced similar experiences, alongside or before individual care How is privacy handled? Is participation voluntary, moderated, and available in a language I understand?

Availability, cost, language, waiting times, and geographic eligibility vary. A crisis service provides immediate support; it is not automatically a replacement for continuing assessment and care. A primary-care clinician can help when you are unsure where to begin.

If the fear follows trauma or violence exposure

SAMHSA defines individual trauma as an event or circumstances experienced as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening that can have lasting adverse effects. Responses are personal. Some people have lasting traumatic-stress reactions, while others do not experience continuing negative effects.

NIMH explains that fear is part of the body’s fight-or-flight response. After a traumatic event, people may experience anxiety, sadness, anger, trouble concentrating or sleeping, or repeated thoughts about what happened. Most people recover from these symptoms. Persistent symptoms or interference with daily life are the point at which professional help becomes especially important; fear alone does not establish post-traumatic stress disorder.

A trauma-informed service should emphasize safety, trust, collaboration, peer support, and empowerment. You can ask a provider to explain what will happen before discussing upsetting details, and you can say when a question feels too much for that moment.

Helping a child or teenager affected by community violence

Children and teenagers may show distress through sleep changes, irritability, concentration problems, withdrawal, or changes in school attendance rather than a direct description of fear. Listen without demanding details, keep routines as stable as possible, and explain safety information in age-appropriate language.

The CDC says trauma-informed psychosocial support or counselling can help young people process traumatic experiences, manage distress and grief, and develop coping strategies. This youth-focused guidance should not be treated as an efficacy claim for every adult or every type of fear. A paediatric or youth mental-health professional can help determine an appropriate path.

Use technology to support—not amplify—your coping plan

Devices can make support easier, but constant alerts and algorithmic feeds can keep your nervous system on high alert. Practical changes include:

  • Create a short, scheduled window for checking news and messages, then use do-not-disturb settings outside that window.
  • Mute accounts or keywords that repeatedly show graphic or speculative material while keeping trusted local safety alerts available.
  • Save emergency contacts and a trusted person’s number where you can reach them quickly, and tell that person what information you want shared if you become overwhelmed.
  • Use a calendar reminder for meals, medication, sleep preparation, or an appointment when concentration is poor.
  • Choose a private channel for counselling or crisis support, especially when others can see your screen or call history.

These settings help implement limits; they cannot assess whether a threat is real. For a specific danger, follow local safety instructions rather than relying on an app or online discussion.

Patterns that can keep fear in control

  • Constant checking: Repeatedly searching for updates can increase distress without improving your safety. Decide in advance when you will check reliable information.
  • Total withdrawal: Avoiding every public place can shrink your life and make necessary care harder to reach. Modify activities for safety and seek professional guidance instead of imposing indefinite rules on yourself.
  • Self-diagnosis from a symptom list: Similar symptoms can have different causes. Use the list to describe your experience to a professional, not to label yourself.
  • Handling the fear alone: Isolation removes practical and emotional support. Tell at least one trusted person what is changing in your day.
  • Expecting one technique to solve everything: Breathing, exercise, routines, and reduced news exposure are coping tools, not guarantees. Escalate to professional care when distress persists or impairs functioning.

If you are supporting someone else

Ask whether they are in immediate danger before discussing coping. If danger is present, help them reach a safer location and appropriate local emergency support. If the issue is ongoing distress, listen without insisting that they “get over it,” offer a concrete form of help, and respect their choices about disclosure and treatment.

Keep contact predictable, avoid forwarding graphic material, and notice practical warning signs such as missed meals, inability to sleep, or stopping essential activities. Encourage professional support when symptoms persist or daily life is affected. You can support someone without diagnosing them or promising that a particular treatment will work.

Crisis resources depend on where you live

In the United States, SAMHSA lists call or text 988 for crisis support and the Disaster Distress Helpline for distress related to disasters and emergencies. These are U.S. resources. Readers elsewhere should use their local crisis line, emergency number, health service, or trusted community organization. Phone numbers, eligibility, and service coverage can change, so verify the details at the time you need them.

If you are in immediate danger, contact the appropriate local emergency or safety service first. If there is no immediate threat but fear is controlling your sleep, movement, relationships, concentration, or self-care, arrange professional support rather than waiting for the problem to resolve on its own.
