If DuckDuckGo’s AI gives a wrong answer, do not treat the response as authoritative. First determine whether it came from a Duck.ai conversation or Search Assist, copy the exact claim, and verify it against a reliable primary source. If the same Duck.ai model repeatedly behaves unexpectedly, DuckDuckGo advises checking the model provider’s help information and trying another available model. You can also submit appropriate feedback or reduce and disable AI features.
Start by identifying which DuckDuckGo AI feature answered you
DuckDuckGo has two different AI experiences that can look similar but require different checks and reporting routes. Identify the product before troubleshooting.
Duck.ai chat
Duck.ai is the conversational service. You ask follow-up questions in a chat and are served a model that generates the response. A mistake may come from a misread question, missing context, outdated training information, a reasoning error, or a recurring behavior in that model. The conversation interface is where you should look for chat-specific feedback and harmful-content reporting controls.
Search Assist in search results
Search Assist is an optional answer embedded in DuckDuckGo search results. It creates a short response from web material and normally links to one or two sources. Select More to expand an answer when that control is available. Because the answer is generated from crawled pages, inspect the linked pages themselves; a source link is not proof that the generated summary interpreted the page correctly.

If you cannot tell which product produced the text, look at the surrounding interface. A chat transcript indicates Duck.ai; an answer card inside a normal results page indicates Search Assist.
Use a quick triage before deciding what to do
One incorrect sentence does not establish that the entire service or model is unusable. Separate an isolated error from a repeatable problem and assess the consequences before acting on the answer.
- Save the exact wording. Copy the question, the complete answer, the date, and any source links. Small changes in wording can change a model’s output, and an edited paraphrase makes later checking harder.
- Mark the disputed claim. Separate verifiable statements from opinions, predictions, calculations, and instructions. A confident tone is not evidence, and a speculative answer should not be treated as a factual one.
- Check whether the fact can change. Laws, prices, schedules, software behavior, public-office holders, and local rules may be correct in one place or on one date and wrong in another. Note the answer’s geographic and date assumptions.
- Assess the stakes. For medical, legal, financial, safety, employment, or other consequential decisions, pause and verify with a qualified professional or responsible authority rather than relying on the chatbot alone.
- Test for a pattern. Ask a narrowly worded follow-up or repeat the question in a new chat, without treating the second response as independent proof. If the same model repeatedly gives unexpected answers, follow the model-switch process below.
Verify the answer instead of trusting its citations
Find a source that directly establishes the claim
Prefer a primary source: an official record, regulator, court or government publication, manufacturer documentation, standards body, or original research paper. A secondary article can help explain a subject, but it may repeat the same error or be out of date. Match the source to the claim. For example, an agency’s current rule is stronger evidence for a compliance requirement than a general blog post.

Check the source’s publication or update date, jurisdiction, edition, and scope. A statement can be accurate for the United States but not Canada, or for one software release but not another. If the answer omits those qualifiers, add them to your verification notes.
Audit every citation, not just the presence of a link
Open the cited page and search for the relevant passage. Confirm that it supports the specific proposition, not merely a related topic. Watch for these common citation failures:
- The page discusses a different product, country, date, or version.
- The answer reverses a qualification such as “may,” “up to,” or “not recommended.”
- The linked text is an opinion, advertisement, forum comment, or unverified summary rather than evidence.
- The citation is real but does not contain the number, quotation, or conclusion attributed to it.
- The source has changed since the answer was generated, or the link now redirects elsewhere.
For Search Assist, this source audit is especially important because the feature automatically summarizes web content. The source pages are evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee that the generated wording is correct.

Use independent confirmation for high-impact decisions
Do not use a chatbot response as the sole basis for diagnosing an illness, changing medication, interpreting a legal obligation, moving money, disabling a safety system, or responding to an emergency. Take the disputed claim to a licensed professional, official authority, or emergency service as appropriate. You can still use the AI answer to formulate questions, but the decision should rest on verified information.
When one Duck.ai model keeps getting things wrong
DuckDuckGo’s specific guidance is for a model that is consistently producing unexpected responses, not for switching models after every isolated typo. Use this sequence:
- Reproduce the behavior carefully. Keep a copy of the prompt and response, and remove irrelevant context that could be confusing the model.
- Check the model provider’s help resources. DuckDuckGo recommends checking with the provider to see whether the behavior is a known issue. Provider documentation and model availability can change, so use the current help material rather than an old model list.
- Try another model available in Duck.ai. Model choices and labels are not permanent; select an alternative shown in your current interface instead of relying on a remembered name. Ask the same neutral question and then verify the result independently.
- Keep the limitation in mind. A different model may produce a better answer for this prompt while still being wrong elsewhere. Switching models is a troubleshooting step, not an accuracy guarantee.
If several models fail on the same ambiguous question, rewrite it with the relevant date, location, definitions, and desired output. If they fail on a simple, well-specified fact, preserve the examples so feedback can identify the problem.

How to send feedback or report harmful content
For a suspicious search result or ordinary Search Assist problem
DuckDuckGo says to use Share Feedback at the bottom of the search-results page and follow the prompts. Some instant answers may also display their own feedback control. Describe the exact claim, explain why it is incorrect, and include the query and source page when the form allows it. This route is for feedback about search results; it should not be described as a dedicated accuracy guarantee or as a substitute for verifying urgent information.
For illegal or harmful AI content
DuckDuckGo’s Online Safety Statement provides a separate thumbs-down reporting flow for harmful or illegal material. In Duck.ai, click the thumbs-down icon and choose Harmful or illegal. In Search Assist, use the thumbs-down control, choose Something Else, describe the issue, and submit it. That process is specifically for harmful or illegal content. An ordinary factual mistake should be reported through the relevant feedback route instead of being mislabeled as harmful content.

DuckDuckGo states that, by default, Duck.ai does not record or store chats and that DuckDuckGo and its model providers do not use those chats to train models. If you voluntarily share a conversation with feedback, DuckDuckGo stores and reviews the shared material to improve its products. Remove passwords, personal identifiers, confidential work details, and other information that is not necessary to demonstrate the error. Provider-specific retention arrangements can change, so consult the current privacy information before submitting sensitive material.

Reduce or turn off DuckDuckGo’s AI features
AI features are optional. If inaccurate answers are wasting time or you simply do not want them displayed, adjust their frequency or turn them off rather than continuing to use a feature you do not need.
Change Search Assist frequency
DuckDuckGo describes four availability choices: Often, Sometimes (the default stated on its help page), On-demand, and Never. You can change the setting in Search Settings or from the gear icon on a Search Assist answer. In the DuckDuckGo browser, the corresponding path is Settings > AI Features. Interface labels can change, so use the labels shown in your current version.
Turn off Duck.ai or Search Assist
DuckDuckGo provides opt-out instructions for both Duck.ai and Search Assist. Follow the current instructions for your device and account state; disabling Search Assist does not necessarily delete a Duck.ai conversation, and changing a browser setting may not change settings on another device. If you only want fewer interruptions, choose on-demand instead of disabling every AI feature.

What DuckDuckGo does—and does not—promise about accuracy
DuckDuckGo explicitly acknowledges: “As with any AI service, the AI models available through Duck.ai may generate inaccurate information.” That statement means an occasional error is a recognized limitation, not evidence that a particular answer is safe to use. No published Duck.ai accuracy rate or comparative benchmark establishes how often errors occur, so do not rely on an invented percentage or an unsupported claim that one model is universally more accurate.
The practical standard is therefore claim-by-claim verification. Use the service for brainstorming, explanations, and drafting when the consequences are low; check facts before repeating them; and move important decisions to authoritative sources and qualified people. Feedback, model switching, and opt-out controls address the product experience, but none removes the need to validate a consequential answer.
