If your DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince match disconnects, first run the Nintendo Switch connection test and record the NAT type, download speed, upload speed and any error code. Nintendo identifies NAT compatibility, latency, weak or interfered Wi‑Fi and faulty network equipment as the usual causes. Improve the wireless path or switch to Ethernet, testing after each change. If only one friend is affected, compare both players’ results. The story campaign remains playable offline; Quickfire Contests and the Online Shop need an internet connection.
First, identify the game and the failure
Players sometimes call this game “Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.” Square Enix’s official title is DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, and that is the name used in the Switch software and support information. The troubleshooting below applies to its online battles and matchmaking.
Separate a connection failure from a game or controller problem. A match that freezes briefly and then recovers points to latency or wireless interference. A return to the lobby, a matchmaking timeout or a message that the opponent cannot be reached points more strongly to NAT or a failed peer-to-peer connection. If the Switch itself cannot complete its connection test, fix the console’s network path before changing in-game options.
Why online battles disconnect or feel slow
The Switch connection test reports three useful measurements: NAT type, download speed and upload speed. Nintendo explains that non-optimal NAT can prevent peer-to-peer matchmaking, while high latency can make a match or matchmaking request time out. Latency is the round-trip time for data; a fast download number does not guarantee a low-latency route. Nintendo describes the problem this way: “Latency issues can occur if the time to send and receive data over a network is too long.”

Wireless conditions are another common cause. Distance from the router, walls, radio interference, congestion from other devices and a slow or overloaded network device can all produce packet loss or delay. A damaged Ethernet cable or incompatible LAN adapter can cause similar symptoms on a wired setup. There is no authoritative notice establishing a game-wide server outage or a universal defect for The Dark Prince, so diagnose NAT, latency, Wi‑Fi and cabling before assuming the service is down.
Run the Switch connection test before changing anything
- On the Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Test Connection.
- Write down the displayed NAT Type, Download Speed, Upload Speed and any error code.
- Run the test again after each network change so you can tell which change helped.
Nintendo’s current support guidance uses 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as reference points (guidance accessed in 2026). These are reference thresholds, not a promise that a connection above them will be lag-free. Your connection also needs low, stable latency and a NAT result that allows the peer-to-peer traffic used by matchmaking.

Fix a laggy or unstable Wi‑Fi connection
Move the console and reduce interference
Place the Switch or its dock closer to the wireless router, with fewer walls and large objects between them. Keep it away from sources of radio interference and crowded electronics. Do not hide the router inside a cabinet or behind dense furniture. After moving either device, repeat System Settings → Internet → Test Connection and then try another match.

Stop competing traffic temporarily
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams and game updates on phones, computers, televisions and other consoles sharing the connection. Ask other users to avoid bandwidth-heavy activity while you test. This is a diagnostic step: if the match stabilizes only when the network is quiet, congestion is contributing to the problem.
Test one change at a time
Nintendo recommends testing after each adjustment. Changing the router position, pausing traffic and replacing hardware simultaneously makes the result impossible to interpret. Record the new NAT, download and upload readings, and note whether the symptom is a timeout, a mid-match drop or visible delay.
Use Ethernet when Wi‑Fi remains unreliable
A wired connection removes the radio link between the dock and router and is often the most decisive test for wireless lag. The Nintendo Switch OLED dock includes a built-in LAN port. A standard Switch dock does not; it can use a compatible Nintendo Switch LAN adapter connected to a USB port. Check the adapter’s current model compatibility before buying or connecting it.

- Connect the LAN cable to an available router or network switch port.
- Connect the other end to the OLED dock’s LAN port or to the compatible USB LAN adapter on a standard dock.
- Place the console in the dock and wait for the wired link to establish.
- Open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection and record the new results.
- Launch an online battle and compare stability with the Wi‑Fi result.
If the wired test is worse or fails, try another Ethernet cable; Nintendo specifically recommends this when the first cable may be damaged. Also reseat both connectors and try a different router port. A wired connection cannot correct a restrictive NAT imposed upstream, but it can distinguish a wireless problem from a broader network problem.

If you can match with other players but fail consistently with one particular friend, Nintendo says that player’s network may be the source. Have both players perform the same connection test and exchange the displayed NAT type, download speed, upload speed and any error code. The player with the less suitable NAT should start troubleshooting first, but both sides should test rather than assuming the other person is at fault.
- Both players should pause heavy network use and retest.
- Each player should try a closer router position or Ethernet.
- Compare whether the failure occurs only between this pair or with every opponent.
- If one player’s test fails, that player should follow Nintendo’s error-code guidance or ask the ISP or network administrator to investigate.
A match that fails against every opponent is more consistent with your own connection, console network path or a broad service issue. Because no official notice establishes a current game-wide outage, do not treat a single failed pairing as proof that the game’s servers are offline.

What to do when the connection test itself fails
Do not keep retrying matchmaking while the Switch cannot complete its network test. Capture the exact error code and wording, including capitalization and punctuation. Use Nintendo’s instructions for that code, then involve the person who manages the network: an ISP support team for a home connection, or an administrator for school, work, hotel or public Wi‑Fi. Managed networks may intentionally restrict peer-to-peer traffic, and you may not have permission to change their NAT or firewall settings.
After the underlying connection test succeeds, run it once more and then test an online match. If the test succeeds but the match still times out, focus on NAT and latency rather than repeatedly changing your Nintendo Account or game data. The test result is a network diagnosis; it is not an in-game graphics or controller setting.

Can you keep playing offline?
Yes. Square Enix states that DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince can be played and completed without an internet connection. You can continue the single-player campaign while diagnosing online play or while using a network that cannot support peer-to-peer matches.

Connectivity-dependent features are the exception. Quickfire Contests and the Online Shop require an internet connection. Online battles likewise cannot operate without connectivity, so an offline session will not substitute for those network features. If you only need the story, disconnecting from Wi‑Fi does not prevent completion; if you need contests, shop access or battles, restore a working connection first.
A compact decision path
- Every opponent disconnects: run the Switch test, inspect NAT and speed, then improve Wi‑Fi or try Ethernet.
- Only one friend cannot match: both players compare NAT and speed; troubleshoot the less suitable result.
- Lag improves when other devices stop using the network: congestion is involved; reduce competing traffic during play.
- Wired works but Wi‑Fi does not: keep the wired setup or continue improving router placement and interference conditions.
- The test shows an error: retain the code and follow Nintendo’s code-specific instructions or contact the network administrator.
- Online play remains unavailable: play the campaign offline, remembering that Quickfire Contests and the Online Shop remain unavailable without internet access.
Retesting after each change gives you a measurable before-and-after result instead of guesswork. The combination of a suitable NAT result, stable latency and a clean wired or well-positioned wireless link is the practical target for reliable The Dark Prince matchmaking.
