If an app or device stopped working after you disabled a Windows service, first re-enable that specific service and try starting it. Open the Services console, change its startup type from Disabled to the setting it had before—or another setting documented for that service—and select Start. Do not set an unknown service to Automatic by default: the right setting depends on the service, its dependencies, and your Windows configuration.
Restore the service you changed
Windows cannot start a service while its startup type is Disabled. Microsoft’s guidance for error 1058 is to select a startup option other than Disabled and then try to start the service. That is a recovery step, not a recommendation to use Automatic for every service.
- Open Services. Press
Windows+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. Approve a User Account Control prompt if one appears. - Find the service you disabled. Use the service’s display name if you know it. If you are unsure which entry you changed, do not guess based on a similar name; check your notes or ask for help identifying it.
- Open its properties. Double-click the service and note its current status and Startup type. If you know its previous setting, restore that setting. Otherwise, consult documentation for that particular service rather than choosing Automatic at random.
- Apply the change. Select Apply, then select Start if the button is available. If Windows reports an error, record the exact message and code.
- Test the affected feature. Reopen the app or retry the device function that stopped working. Check whether it works now and whether the problem returns after a restart.
Windows services may use different start types and depend on other services. Microsoft describes a service’s start type as indicating whether it is disabled; its documentation also explains that services are managed through a database that includes configuration and dependencies. If you had recorded the prior setting before disabling the service, restore that value rather than trying alternatives. If you did not record it, do not treat the fact that a service is disabled as proof that Automatic is correct. Services and driver services can have distinct start types and dependencies, and Windows configurations vary. When the service’s identity or proper setting is unclear, pause and gather the details needed for service-specific guidance.
Re-enable a service with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful if you know the service’s internal name and are comfortable running commands. This example follows Microsoft’s documented approach: inspect the service’s start mode, change it to Manual if it is disabled, and then attempt to start it. Manual is an example in this procedure, not a universal recommended setting. If the service had a known prior setting, use that instead.
- Open an elevated PowerShell session. Search for PowerShell, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Service-control commands can require elevation.
- Find the service name. Run
Get-Serviceto list services. The displayed service name may differ from the name used in commands; confirm the correct internal name before changing anything. - Inspect its start mode. Replace
ServiceNamewith the confirmed service name and run:Get-CimInstance Win32_Service -Filter "Name='ServiceName'" | Select-Object Name, StartMode, State - Change the start type only if needed. If the service is disabled, and Manual is appropriate or is the documented example you are following, run:
Set-Service -Name "ServiceName" -StartupType Manual - Attempt to start it. Run:
Start-Service -Name "ServiceName"
Then check the service state and test the app or device again.
Microsoft’s Start-Service documentation describes this pattern. A start failure can indicate a dependency or another fault; do not respond by changing unrelated services. Keep a record of the service name, command output, Windows version, and any error text.

A display name that looks familiar is not enough if you have not confirmed the internal name that a command needs. In the inspection command, the filter is intended to select one service by name; replace the example name carefully. If the query does not return the service you expected, stop rather than running a change command against a guessed name.
The sequence matters: inspect first, change only the disabled service’s startup type when appropriate, then attempt to start it. The example’s Manual setting is not a blanket fix, and a successful command is not the same as verifying the app or device. If you are unsure about command syntax, the Services console offers a graphical route for the same targeted recovery.

If the service starts but the app or device still fails
A running service does not prove that the service was the only cause. The app may need a dependent service, a driver, or a separate component that is still failing. Check for a new error before making additional configuration changes.
Look for events at the time the problem occurred
- Open Start, search for Event Viewer, and open it.
- Check Windows Logs > System for service, driver, or startup events around the time you tried the app or device.
- Check Windows Logs > Application for errors from the affected app at the same time.
- Record the event source, event ID, timestamp, and message. Compare the timing with the service start attempt; an event that is unrelated in time may not explain the failure.
Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting guidance discusses using event logs to investigate Windows startup problems: Windows startup issues troubleshooting.
Look for events that line up with the failure rather than treating every warning in the logs as its cause. For example, an event around the time the service failed to start is more relevant to this investigation than an older, unrelated entry. The event source, timestamp, ID, and message provide useful context, but the available information may not identify a correct startup setting by itself. Use it alongside the service name and the exact app or device error.
For Microsoft Store and built-in apps
Do not assume a disabled service is the only explanation for a Microsoft Store or inbox app problem. Microsoft’s specialist troubleshooting guide addresses app registration, package integrity, permissions, and event logs. It is aimed at support agents and IT professionals; general users are directed to Windows app repair guidance. See Microsoft’s Modern, Inbox, and Microsoft Store Apps troubleshooting guidance.
This is a reason to avoid repeatedly changing services when restoring the one you disabled has not resolved the app. The remaining cause could concern the app itself or another component; the available information does not establish that one service change repairs every Store or inbox app failure. For those apps, follow the user-facing repair guidance or seek support rather than applying specialist package or permission steps by guesswork.

Before asking for configuration-specific help
Have these details ready so the service’s setting can be assessed rather than guessed:
- The service’s display name and internal name, if known.
- Your Windows version.
- The exact error shown by the app, device, Services console, or PowerShell.
- Whether the failure began immediately after disabling the service.
- Relevant System or Application event details from the time of the failure.
Also note what you changed and whether the service now starts. That distinguishes “the service remains disabled or will not start” from “the service starts, but the original symptom remains.” Include command output only if you used PowerShell, and avoid changing a second service just to see whether the result improves. Those details make it possible to investigate the actual failure without assuming its cause.
If Windows startup is affected
If Windows still loads, use the service-specific recovery above first when you know which service you changed. When startup trouble is broader, Safe Mode and Event Viewer may help you investigate. Microsoft also documents using System Configuration to perform a clean start and isolate services; treat that as an escalation method, not a first step for a known single-service change.
Use a clean start to isolate a broader conflict
A clean-start investigation can help determine whether a background service or startup item is contributing to a problem, but it can temporarily disable core Microsoft functions. Follow Microsoft’s procedure carefully, test methodically, and restore Normal startup after isolation. The precise steps and implications depend on the Windows configuration; consult Microsoft’s System Configuration troubleshooting instructions.
Use this path when the problem is broader than one known service or when you need to isolate a conflict—not as a substitute for restoring a service you can identify. A clean-start investigation changes the troubleshooting conditions so services can be tested individually; it is not a reason to leave other services disabled afterward. Keep track of the changes made during isolation and return to Normal startup once testing is complete.

When the PC will not boot normally
Do not infer which driver or service to change from the symptom alone. Boot failures and driver-service changes can have additional risks, and the correct recovery depends on the displayed error and system configuration. Use Microsoft’s Windows boot troubleshooting guidance or seek qualified support if you cannot safely identify the service or restore Windows startup.
The choice of next step depends on two practical questions: does Windows still load, and do you know which service you changed? If Windows loads and the service is known, try the targeted Services or PowerShell method first. If startup is affected more broadly, investigate through the documented boot guidance and logs. If Windows does not boot normally, do not try random service or driver changes; exact recovery steps depend on the error and configuration. A qualified local Windows support or PC repair service may be appropriate if you cannot safely proceed, but no specific provider has been verified here.

Do not use a registry cleaner or edit service registry values as a generic fix. Microsoft warns, “Don’t directly edit the registry unless there’s no other alternative.” Incorrect registry values can cause serious errors, and per-user services vary across Windows versions. - Do not set every disabled service to Automatic; restore the service’s known or documented setting.
- Do not disable or alter other services to see whether the app starts.
- Do not apply instructions for a driver service or per-user service to a different service without confirming they fit your Windows version and configuration.
- If the service identity or correct setting is unclear, stop before making more changes and gather the service name, Windows version, exact error, and relevant event details.
Per-user services can vary between Windows versions, so generic instructions that refer to one configuration may not match another. Likewise, advice about a driver service should not automatically be applied to an ordinary app service. Confirm which service you are dealing with and use guidance for that service and Windows configuration. Registry edits, offline hive changes, and broad service-disabling advice are not needed for the ordinary recovery described here.
The recovery tools documented for this problem are built into Windows: Services, PowerShell, and Event Viewer. The available guidance does not establish a separate product as necessary for restoring a disabled service.
