On a Chromebook, press Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher to toggle Caps Lock. On keyboards that support it, Fn + Quick Insert is another documented option. If the shortcut suddenly stops working, check that you are using the correct key, inspect keyboard remapping, restart and test a guest session, then run ChromeOS Diagnostics. These steps separate a shortcut or account problem from a failing keyboard before you reset the device or contact its manufacturer.
Start with the correct Caps Lock shortcut
Chromebooks generally do not use a dedicated Caps Lock key in their built-in layout. The documented toggle is a two-key shortcut, and the second key may be labeled differently depending on the Chromebook or keyboard.
| Keyboard or situation | Keys to press | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chromebook keyboard | Alt + Search | Use the key labeled Search. |
| Chromebook keyboard with newer labeling | Alt + Launcher | Launcher is the Search key’s alternate label. |
| Supported keyboard with Quick Insert | Fn + Quick Insert | This option is available only on keyboards that support it. |
| Windows keyboard connected to a Chromebook | Alt + Windows key | Google maps the Windows key between Ctrl and Alt to the Chromebook Search/Launcher function. |
Hold the first key, tap the second once, and release both. Test the result in a text field by typing a few letters. If they appear in capitals, the toggle worked; press the same combination again to turn Caps Lock off. If nothing changes, continue with the checks below instead of repeatedly pressing random combinations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck whether Search or Launcher was remapped
ChromeOS lets you change what several physical keys do. Search/Launcher can be remapped to act as Caps Lock. That is useful if you want a dedicated Caps Lock key, but it also means the key may no longer perform its normal Search/Launcher action and the expected shortcut can appear to fail.

- Open Settings.
- Select Device.
- Open Keyboard.
- Choose Remap keyboard keys. The wording can vary with the Chromebook model or ChromeOS version.
- Find the Search/Launcher entry and read its assigned action.
- If it is set to Caps Lock, decide whether that is intentional. To restore the standard shortcut, assign the key back to Search or Launcher, then test Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher again.
A remap changes the key’s behavior at the system level. It is not evidence by itself that the physical switch is broken. Conversely, if the key is configured normally but ChromeOS does not react to it in any application, a hardware or input-registration problem becomes more plausible.
Restart, then separate an account problem from a device problem
Restart ChromeOS
Turn the Chromebook off completely and start it again. A restart reloads keyboard services and clears a temporary input-state problem without changing your remapping choices. After signing in, test the documented shortcut before opening other applications or extensions.
Test as a guest
Google’s general keyboard troubleshooting sequence recommends browsing as a guest after restarting. At the sign-in screen, choose the option to browse as a guest, open a text field, and try the Caps Lock combination.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Works in the guest session: the keyboard can produce the required input, so the signed-in account, its settings, or account-specific software is involved. Google describes removing and then adding the affected account as a next account-level measure.
- Fails in the guest session too: the problem is less likely to be limited to your profile. Continue with the keyboard test in Diagnostics.
Guest testing is an isolation step, not a permanent workaround. It does not tell you which setting caused the conflict; it tells you whether the failure follows the device or only one account.
Use the built-in keyboard Diagnostics test
ChromeOS includes a keyboard test that can show whether key presses are being detected independently of the Caps Lock shortcut.
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open Diagnostics.
- Choose the keyboard test and press the physical keys involved: Alt and Search/Launcher, or the keys on the external keyboard.
- Keep the Diagnostics window active while testing. Google states that testing cannot continue while another window is active.
Interpret the result carefully. If Diagnostics does not register one of the keys, the issue is an input or hardware path rather than merely the Caps Lock command. If both keys register but the combination does not toggle Caps Lock, return to the remapping and shortcut-conflict checks. Diagnostics can distinguish those broad categories; it does not identify the exact component or prove why the toggle failed.

Look for shortcut conflicts without confusing two different settings
The ChromeOS Shortcuts app manages customizable key combinations. It can add, edit, delete, or reset shortcuts, but it is separate from the keyboard-key remapping page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A shortcut with a lock icon cannot be edited.
- Two actions can compete for the same key combination. When ChromeOS reports a conflict, choose another combination or reassign the editable action.
- Resetting customizable shortcuts can remove a conflict created by a change you made earlier.
Do not assume that the Caps Lock toggle itself can be changed in the Shortcuts app. Google’s documentation lists Alt + Search/Launcher as the Caps Lock command, while key remapping is documented separately. Use the remapping page to change what a physical key does; use Shortcuts for combinations that ChromeOS exposes as customizable.
Follow the escalation order before resetting the Chromebook
Account-level action
If the shortcut works as a guest but not in your normal profile, follow the account troubleshooting path: remove the affected account from the Chromebook and add it again. This is aimed at an account-specific configuration problem, not a keyboard that fails for every user.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Hardware reset
Google’s general keyboard guidance also includes a hardware reset. It is a broader recovery measure than changing a shortcut, so use it only after confirming the correct keys, checking remapping, restarting, testing a guest session, and running Diagnostics. The exact hardware-reset procedure can differ by Chromebook design; use the instructions supplied for your model rather than guessing a key sequence.
Factory reset for owner-account problems
Google lists a factory reset for problems tied to the owner account. This is not a Caps Lock-specific repair and should be treated as a last resort after the account and device tests point to an owner-profile problem. A reset changes the Chromebook’s software state broadly, so do not choose it merely because one shortcut is inconvenient until the narrower checks are complete.

An external keyboard can answer an important question: does ChromeOS respond when the input comes from a different physical device? It can also provide a dedicated Caps Lock key while you arrange service for a built-in keyboard fault.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Connection method | Check whether the Chromebook supports the keyboard’s wired or wireless connection and that it is recognized by ChromeOS. |
| Chromebook compatibility | Confirm compatibility for the individual keyboard and ChromeOS version; general keyboard support does not validate every model. |
| Dedicated Caps Lock key | A physical key avoids the Alt-plus-Search shortcut and is useful as an interim input method. |
| Layout | Different layouts may place Ctrl, Alt, Windows, and Search/Launcher functions in different positions. |
| Purpose | Use it as a workaround while diagnosing the built-in keyboard, or as a replacement only after a hardware fault is confirmed. |
When a connected Windows keyboard is used, remember that its Windows key serves as the Chromebook Search/Launcher key for shortcut purposes. If a dedicated Caps Lock key works but Alt plus the mapped Windows key does not, inspect ChromeOS remapping and shortcut conflicts before concluding that the external keyboard is incompatible.
Match the symptom to the next action
| Observed symptom | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| Alt + Search does nothing, but Search opens the launcher normally | Check the keyboard-remapping page and then test for a shortcut conflict. |
| Search no longer opens its normal interface | Inspect whether Search/Launcher was deliberately remapped to Caps Lock or another action. |
| One of the keys is absent in Diagnostics | Treat it as an input or hardware issue; test another keyboard if available and prepare for manufacturer support. |
| The shortcut works as a guest but not after signing in | Focus on the affected account and follow the remove-and-add account guidance. |
| The shortcut fails for every account and an external keyboard works | The built-in keyboard is suspect; use the external device temporarily and contact the Chromebook manufacturer. |
| Both keys register in Diagnostics but Caps Lock still will not toggle | Recheck the exact Search/Launcher key, remapping, and customizable shortcut conflicts before broader recovery steps. |
When to contact the Chromebook manufacturer
Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when the documented combinations fail after remapping checks, restart, guest testing, and Diagnostics, especially when Diagnostics cannot detect one of the keys or an external keyboard works while the built-in keyboard does not. Google directs users to the manufacturer for unresolved keyboard problems because the manufacturer can identify model-specific hardware procedures and service options.
When you contact support, record the Chromebook model, whether the issue occurs in a guest session, which keys Diagnostics detects, and whether a connected keyboard can toggle Caps Lock. Those observations make it clear whether support should investigate a physical key, an account configuration, or a ChromeOS shortcut conflict.
Quick Recap
A concise recovery checklist
- Try Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher; on supported keyboards try Fn + Quick Insert.
- For a Windows keyboard, use its Windows key as Search/Launcher.
- Check Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys.
- Restart and test from a guest session.
- Run Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics while keeping that window active.
- Resolve any editable Shortcuts-app conflict; locked shortcuts cannot be changed.
- Use account troubleshooting, hardware reset, or factory reset only when the preceding tests justify that broader step.
- If the failure persists, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.
