If the games on a retro handheld suddenly vanish, do not format the card immediately. First determine whether the menu merely lost its ROM index, whether one game or emulator core is failing, or whether the microSD card or system installation is damaged. Refresh the library, reseat and test the card, back up accessible saves, and only then reinstall the exact firmware for your model. A replacement card restores neither games nor save files by itself.
Start by identifying what actually disappeared
“The ROMs are gone” can describe several different failures. A handheld may still contain every file while its launcher has lost the list that displays them. One title may fail because of its file or emulator core even though the rest of the library works. A corrupted or unreadable card can remove the entire library from view, prevent games from launching, or stop the console from booting.
| What you see | Most relevant possibility | First response |
|---|---|---|
| The menu is empty, but the handheld otherwise starts | ROM list or library-detection problem; card trouble is also possible if no files are found | Power off, insert the card before startup, then use the device’s ROM-refresh function |
| Only one or a few games refuse to launch | Wrong folder, damaged game file, or unsuitable emulator core | Check the expected ROM location and try another corresponding RetroArch core |
| All games are absent or every game fails | Corrupted, incompatible, or incompletely installed card/system files | Test the card, protect saves, and prepare the correct system installation on a readable card |
| The handheld will not boot | System card damage or a failed installation | Use the exact model’s official recovery instructions; stop repeated flashing if the problem remains |
A blank menu is not proof that files were erased. Miyoo’s troubleshooting guidance treats refreshing the ROM list as a separate step from investigating card corruption. That distinction matters because a refresh is reversible, while formatting or flashing can destroy data that is still recoverable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try the non-destructive checks first
- Shut the handheld down completely. Do not remove or insert the microSD card while the device is running. A card that was not present during startup may not be indexed by the launcher.
- Reseat the card. Remove it only after shutdown, check that it is oriented correctly, and insert it firmly. Then start the handheld with the card already installed.
- Refresh the ROM list. Miyoo’s support instructions specifically direct users to refresh the ROM listing after startup. The label and location vary by launcher, so use the refresh or rescan command provided by your model rather than deleting folders or rebuilding the card.
- Check whether the symptom is selective. Launch several games from different systems. If most work and only particular titles fail, move to the game/core checks below instead of reinstalling the whole operating system.
- Inspect the card on a computer, if it is readable. Use a compatible microSD reader and look for the expected system and ROM folders. Do not write new files to an unstable card before copying accessible saves and personal data.
If the games reappear after the refresh, the immediate problem was library detection rather than demonstrated deletion. You can continue using the device, but make a backup of accessible saves and important files while the card is readable.

When only some games stop working
Check the game’s location and file
A selective failure usually points to the individual title, its folder, or the emulator configuration rather than a completely missing operating system. Confirm that the game remains in the folder expected by the launcher and that its filename and extension have not changed. If the card can be read on a computer, compare the failing title with a working title from the same system without overwriting either file.
Try the corresponding RetroArch core
Miyoo recommends trying another appropriate RetroArch core when an individual game will not load. A core is the emulator component that interprets a particular console format. The core that works for one game or revision may not be the one selected for another. Change the core through the handheld’s normal emulator settings, test the game, and avoid changing system-wide files until you know the failure is broader than that title.
Do not treat a single bad title as proof of card failure
If other games launch normally, repeated firmware flashing is disproportionate and risks saves. A damaged game file, an unsupported format, or a core mismatch can all produce a one-game symptom. Reinstall the system only when the evidence points to the card or installation as a whole.
When the entire library is missing or nothing launches
Miyoo identifies card corruption, card incompatibility, and incomplete system installation as possible causes when games do not appear or work. Anbernic’s support material likewise tells owners to check whether the original system card is damaged and provides model-specific firmware procedures. At this stage, the card itself becomes the main object to test.
Check whether the card is readable
With the handheld powered off, test the card in a suitable computer reader. A card that mounts consistently gives you a chance to copy saves and other personal data. A card that disconnects, reports errors, or cannot be read should be treated as unstable; ordinary copying and formatting are not guaranteed to recover its contents.

Use a different card only when the original is suspect
A replacement microSD card is appropriate when the original is damaged, corrupted, or unreadable. Verify the handheld’s supported card capacity and filesystem before preparing it. Those requirements differ by model, and a card that works in a computer is not automatically compatible with every retro handheld.
A new card is only storage. It does not recreate bundled games, restore save files, or install the launcher by itself. You still need the correct system files and game files that you are authorized to use. Keep the original card untouched until you have copied anything that remains accessible.
Back up data before formatting or flashing
Firmware flashing rewrites the system card. Anbernic’s RG40XXH support guidance explicitly warns users to back up important data first and not to use firmware for another model. That warning applies to the risk of the operation, not just to one menu label: a successful flash can still erase saves and custom files if they were stored on the rewritten card.
- Copy accessible save folders and personal configuration files to a computer or another safe storage location.
- Keep a separate copy of the original card’s contents when the card can be read reliably.
- Do not repeatedly plug in an unstable card and attempt writes; further activity can make recovery harder.
- Do not assume a backup exists merely because the launcher still shows a game. Confirm that the save files are present and readable.
If the card is completely unreadable, the reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal recovery method. Do not promise yourself that formatting, repair utilities, or routine drag-and-drop copying will retrieve the data. Preserve the card and seek appropriate data-recovery advice if the saves are valuable.
Reinstall only firmware for the exact handheld
Identify the model and hardware revision
Read the model printed on the handheld, packaging, or support screen and compare it with the firmware package name. Similar-looking devices can require different images. Anbernic’s RG40XXH support page lists firmware, manuals, and tutorials for that model and warns against using another model’s firmware. The page displayed a firmware entry dated May 21, 2026; support pages and available versions can change, so check the current official page when you begin.

Follow the manufacturer’s preparation procedure
- Download the official system package for the precise model and revision.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions for card preparation, file placement, and booting. Do not substitute a package intended for a related model.
- Use a known-readable card that meets the model’s supported capacity and filesystem requirements.
- Confirm that important saves are backed up before writing the image or replacing system files.
- Insert the prepared card with the handheld powered off, then perform the documented first boot and setup steps.
The RG40XXH guidance is specifically for the RG40XXH. Anbernic’s separate article titled “RG35XX Unable to Power on and Unable to be Charged,” modified March 11, 2025, discusses checking whether the original system SD card is damaged and points toward firmware flashing for that RG35XX troubleshooting case. It should not be treated as a universal procedure for every handheld.
Consider custom firmware only after checking compatibility
Projects such as MinUI are separate from the manufacturer’s stock system. MinUI describes itself as a focused launcher and libretro frontend and documents the devices it supports. Compatibility can change, so check the project’s current device list and installation documentation before using it. Installing a custom system is not a substitute for identifying the correct model, protecting saves, or confirming that the card itself is healthy.
What to do after a replacement-card installation
Once the exact official system is installed on a readable, compatible card, boot the handheld before adding anything else. Confirm that the launcher appears, the expected system folders are present, and a known-good game starts. Then copy back only the files you have verified and are authorized to use. If a copied title breaks the launcher or fails while other titles work, return to the individual-game and core checks rather than reflashing immediately.
Do not assume that a card image includes every game that was on the old card. Bundled content may have been supplied by the seller, added by a previous owner, or stored separately from the operating system. A clean system installation can restore boot files and menu structure without restoring those game files or their saves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use only game files you are authorized to access
Do not direct yourself to random ROM-download sites when replacing missing files. Nintendo’s official Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states, “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal,” and says that unauthorized preinstalled copies on look-alike retro consoles infringe its intellectual-property rights. That is Nintendo’s position concerning Nintendo games, not a jurisdiction-specific ruling on every title or a universal statement about every ROM.

The rights status of bundled files varies, and the available evidence does not establish who is authorized to use every ROM supplied with every handheld. Restore games from sources you are legally entitled to use and consult applicable local law when the situation is unclear. Separating the technical recovery of the card from the legal question of where replacement files come from prevents a working installation from becoming a copyright problem.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Stop experimenting when a correctly prepared card with the correct official firmware still will not boot, when the handheld repeatedly corrupts cards, or when the device behaves differently from the manufacturer’s documented procedure. Repeated flashing can overwrite evidence and saves without fixing a hardware fault.
Anbernic’s RG40XXH guidance tells users to contact after-sales support if the correct firmware does not resolve the problem. Miyoo likewise directs users to support when its troubleshooting steps fail. When you contact the maker, provide the exact model and revision, the card type and condition, what the launcher displays, whether a computer can read the card, and which documented steps you already followed. That information helps support distinguish a bad card from a failed reader, power problem, or incompatible system image.
A practical decision path
- Empty menu, device boots: reseat the card, start with it inserted, and refresh the ROM list.
- Only selected games fail: verify their folders and try another suitable RetroArch core.
- No games or all games fail: test the card’s readability, back up accessible data, and prepare a compatible replacement only if the original is damaged or corrupted.
- Reinstallation required: use firmware for the exact model and hardware revision, following the current official instructions.
- Still no boot: stop repeated flashes and contact the manufacturer.
This order keeps the least destructive explanation in front of you, protects saves before irreversible work, and prevents a replacement card or firmware image from being mistaken for a complete restoration of the original game library.
