Identify which app raised the warning before changing anything. In Google Messages, review the Spam folder and use Report not spam for a verified conversation. In Phone by Google, use the warning’s one-call control or Scam Detection settings only after independently confirming the caller. On an eligible Samsung Galaxy phone, open Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Scam detection, then choose whether to answer or block. A warning is a risk signal, not proof that a legitimate sender or caller is fraudulent.
Why Android can flag a legitimate message or call
Android’s scam defenses look for patterns associated with spam, impersonation and fraud. A genuine bank, clinic, delivery company or business can still resemble those patterns, especially when the number is new, the sender is not in your contacts, or a message contains a link or urgent request. Different apps and manufacturers make these decisions separately, so the correction depends on where the warning appeared.
Google Messages has a message-focused Spam Protection system. Phone by Google has a separate Scam Detection feature for calls. Samsung’s Phone app can provide its own AI Scam detection on supported Galaxy models. Carrier-level filters may add another warning or block, even when the Google or Samsung app does not.

- Google Messages: Look for a suspected-spam banner, a conversation moved to the Spam folder, or a prompt to report spam or not spam.
- Phone by Google: Check the incoming-call screen, an in-call warning, or the call history in the Phone app.
- Samsung Phone: On supported Galaxy devices, the Phone app may show an AI Scam detection alert with an answer-or-block choice.
- Carrier or other security app: A carrier notification, a blocked-call list, or a third-party dialer may be responsible. Its controls will not necessarily match Google or Samsung’s menus.
Do not assume that a warning in one app can be corrected from another. The app that generated the warning is the place to look for its report, unblock or protection setting.

Before you override any warning, verify the sender independently
- Pause. Do not click a link, disclose a one-time passcode, install an app, move money or change an account-security setting because an incoming message or caller demands it.
- End the call if needed. A legitimate organization can wait while you verify its identity.
- Use an independent channel. Open the organization’s known app, type its established website address yourself, or call a number printed on a card, statement or official site. Do not use a callback number supplied in the suspicious message.
- Confirm the exact context. Check whether you actually have an appointment, order, account event or support case that would explain the contact.
- Only then correct the filter. Mark a message as not spam or disable call detection for one verified call. Leave an uncertain item filtered.
This precaution matters because scam warnings are intentionally conservative. Google said more than half of Americans reported receiving at least one scam call per day in 2024, citing its 2024 research in a 2025 announcement. The same announcement cited the Global Anti-Scam Alliance’s estimate that more than $1 trillion was stolen from mobile consumers worldwide in 2024. Those figures describe the scale of the problem, not the accuracy of any individual warning.
When Google Messages blocks a legitimate text
Google Support says suspected spam can be prevented from delivery and hidden in the Spam folder. It also provides Report spam and Report not spam controls. Use the narrow correction for one confirmed conversation instead of turning off all protection.
Find the conversation and mark it as not spam
- Open Google Messages.
- Open the Spam folder if the conversation is not in your regular list. Depending on the app version, the folder is available from the profile picture or initials menu.
- Select the conversation from the verified sender.
- Tap Report not spam when that option is shown, then follow the confirmation prompt.
If the conversation remains in your inbox with a warning, open it and use Report not spam there when available. This tells Google that this specific conversation was misclassified. It does not guarantee that every future message from the number will bypass all carrier or device filters.

Check the Spam Protection setting
To review Google Messages’ protection controls, use Google Messages > profile picture or initials > Messages settings > Protection and safety > Spam protection. You can turn Spam protection off, but doing so removes a broad layer of filtering. For a single verified false positive, leave the global setting enabled and use Report not spam instead.

Google’s March 4, 2025 announcement says Scam Detection in Google Messages is part of Spam Protection. It uses on-device AI for SMS, MMS and RCS conversations with non-contacts. A warning lets you dismiss the alert or report and block the sender. Because this feature is aimed at non-contacts, a new but genuine sender can be more likely to trigger scrutiny than a person already saved in your address book.
If the message never arrived
Ask the sender to confirm the exact number or address used and resend only after you have verified the organization through an independent channel. Check the Spam folder, blocked contacts and any carrier messaging filter. If the sender claims that a security code or payment link was sent, use the organization’s official app or website rather than requesting the same code repeatedly.
When Phone by Google warns about a real call
Phone by Google’s Scam Detection is separate from Google Messages’ reporting controls. Google says the call feature is off by default, analyzes potential scam calls on-device, and is never used during calls with your contacts. A warning can be dismissed or Scam Detection can be turned off for that individual call; Google also provides a setting to turn it off for all future calls.

- Let the warning appear and read the caller’s stated identity and reason for calling.
- Do not provide credentials, codes or payment information while the caller is pressuring you.
- Verify the caller through an official app, a known website or a number on a statement or card.
- Return to the call screen and use the displayed option to turn Scam Detection off for that call, if you still need to speak with the verified caller.
- Afterward, review Phone by Google’s Scam Detection settings. Keep protection on unless repeated, independently confirmed false positives justify a broader change.
The exact wording and location of the per-call control can vary with the Phone app version, language, region and device. If no control appears, do not treat the absence as proof that the call is safe; verify the caller first and check for app updates.

Saving a trusted number as a contact
Google states that Phone by Google Scam Detection is never used during calls with your contacts. Saving a verified number can therefore prevent this particular contact-scoped warning. It is not a universal allow-list: a carrier filter, a different dialer or an OEM protection service may still label the call. Save a number only after confirming that it belongs to the organization or person you intend to trust.
Separate spoofed-call verification warnings
Google has also described a separate verification warning for suspected spoofed calls. That feature can be disabled in Phone by Google settings. A spoofing warning concerns the possibility that the displayed caller ID was manipulated; it does not establish that the underlying organization is fraudulent or genuine. Verify through an independent number before deciding whether to continue.
When Samsung Phone calls a legitimate number a scam
Samsung’s AI Scam detection is a separate feature with narrower eligibility. Samsung says it is available only on Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Carrier, region, language and model support can further affect availability.

Use the answer-or-block control
- When the alert appears, read the caller information without sharing sensitive details.
- Verify the organization independently, preferably after ending the call.
- If the caller is confirmed legitimate, choose Answer on the alert. If not, choose Block.
Samsung says alerts can use a tone or vibration, and the user chooses whether to block or answer based on the alert. The menu path is Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Scam detection.

If the Scam detection menu is missing
- Check the phone model and confirm that Android 16 and One UI 8.5 or higher are installed.
- Install pending updates for the Phone app and system software.
- Allow for carrier, language and regional rollout differences.
- Check whether another dialer is set as the default Phone app.
A missing menu does not mean that your phone is unprotected, nor does it prove that a caller is safe. It means this Samsung control is not currently available in the configuration you are using.

Fix repeated false positives without removing every safeguard
- Update the relevant software. Install updates for Google Messages, Phone by Google, Samsung Phone and Android or One UI.
- Inspect both lists. Check Google Messages’ Spam folder, the Phone app’s blocked numbers and Samsung’s blocked-call controls where present.
- Confirm the default apps. A warning may come from a carrier app or an alternative dialer rather than the app whose settings you opened.
- Reproduce the warning safely. Record the exact alert text, app name, phone model, Android or One UI version, app version, language and region. Do not repeatedly answer an unverified caller just to test it.
- Contact the right support team. Give the carrier or device maker the screenshot and software details. Explain whether the item was a call, SMS, MMS or RCS message and whether the number was saved as a contact.
- Use broad opt-out only as a last resort. If a verified business repeatedly cannot reach you, consider the smallest available exception or per-call override before disabling Spam Protection or Scam Detection globally.
What reporting a message does—and does not do
Report not spam is the correction for a Google Messages false positive. Report spam is appropriate when you have confirmed that a message is unwanted or fraudulent. A report may help Google and participating operators improve filtering, but it is not a guarantee that a number will be permanently allow-listed or blocked across every network.
Phone by Google’s call controls are different: there is no equivalent message-level “not spam” action described for a call. The documented choices are to turn Scam Detection off for one call or disable it for future calls. Samsung presents an answer-or-block decision on eligible devices.
Why a legitimate organization may still trigger a warning
- The organization is calling from a new, rotating or outsourced number.
- The caller ID is unusual or may have been spoofed.
- The sender is not in your contacts, which is within the scope of Google Messages’ and Phone by Google’s non-contact protections.
- The message contains a link, an urgent request or wording common in known scams.
- Multiple systems are applying different signals: a carrier filter may flag a number that Google or Samsung would not.
No independent test or published false-positive rate for a particular phone, carrier or model is established here. Treat each alert as a prompt to verify, not as a final identity judgment.

Practical answers to common questions
Why did Android block a real text?
Google Messages may have classified it as suspected spam and moved it to Spam or prevented delivery. Check that folder and use Report not spam after independently confirming the sender.
How do I stop Pixel Scam Detection from warning about a real call?
Verify the caller, use the per-call option to turn Scam Detection off if it appears, and then review Phone by Google’s Scam Detection setting. The feature does not apply to calls with your contacts, although other filters may still intervene.
Why is my Samsung phone calling a real number a scam?
Samsung’s AI Scam detection uses its own signals and can misclassify a legitimate number. On an eligible Galaxy phone, verify the caller and choose Answer; review Phone > More options > Settings > Scam detection if the behavior persists.
Should I turn off all spam protection?
No. First inspect the Spam folder or blocked list, identify the app that issued the warning, and verify the sender independently. Use a conversation-level or one-call correction whenever possible.
