Android’s scam protections are warnings and safety controls, not proof that every flagged caller, message, or app is malicious. Use the control that made the decision: in Google Phone, mark a legitimate call Not spam and then Unblock; in Google Messages, recover legitimate conversations from Spam & blocked and choose the safe/not-scam option; for an app stopped by Google Play Protect, verify the source and developer first and use Google’s appeal process if the classification is wrong. Never trust a caller ID alone, and do not broadly disable Play Protect to force an installation.
Identify which Android component blocked the item
The remedy depends on whether the decision came from the Phone app, Messages, Scam Detection, or Google Play Protect. Start by matching the symptom to the component before changing any setting.

When Google Phone labels a legitimate call as spam
Treat the label as a warning, not a verdict
Google’s Phone help says, “If you see “Suspected spam caller” or “Spam” as the caller ID, the call might be spam.” The wording matters: a label is a risk signal, not proof of fraud. Let an unexpected call go to voicemail when possible. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, card numbers, or remote-access permission while you are still deciding whether the caller is genuine.

Remove a false spam decision and unblock the number
For a call you have independently verified, correct the decision in the Phone app:
- Open Phone and select Recents.
- Tap the flagged call to open its details.
- Choose Not spam.
- If the number is blocked, tap Unblock and confirm.
Google documents that marking the call as not spam provides feedback for future calls from that number, so the same number should not continue to receive the same spam treatment solely because of the earlier report. Menu wording can vary by Android version, manufacturer, and Phone app release; if you do not see the controls, open the call’s details or the app’s blocked-number list and look for the equivalent action.
Review caller-ID and spam settings
To change the general behavior, open Phone > Settings > Caller ID and spam. The available switches differ by device and account, but this area controls whether incoming callers are identified and whether suspected spam is filtered or reported. Turning off a warning can increase unwanted calls; it does not make a caller safer. Correcting individual false positives is usually less disruptive than disabling protection for every call.

If the call still cannot get through
- Check the Phone app’s blocked-number list for an entry that was added separately from the spam label.
- Ask the legitimate organization to call from a published number or provide a case reference that you can verify through its official channel.
- If the number belongs to a business switchboard, save the confirmed number in Contacts and test a new call after removing the block.
- Do not assume that a caller who knows your name or partial account details is authentic; those details can come from data breaches or public records.
When Google Messages moves a real text to Spam & blocked
Recover the conversation without accidentally keeping the sender blocked
Open Messages, tap your profile picture or the app menu, and choose Spam & blocked. Open the conversation and read the warning and message context. If it is a legitimate conversation, use the displayed safe, Not spam, or equivalent control. Confirm that the sender is no longer blocked before expecting new messages.
Google’s Messages help states: “When you report a conversation as spam, you also block the sender and move the message to your “Spam & blocked” folder.” That side effect explains why a real appointment reminder, delivery update, or two-factor message may appear to have disappeared. Simply deleting the warning does not necessarily restore delivery; use the conversation’s recovery control and check the blocked list.
Understand “Likely scam” and Scam Detection
Some Android devices show a “Likely scam” warning while you view a message. Scam Detection is not available on every phone: Google limits it to select devices and listed countries and languages. To see whether your phone supports it, search Android Settings for Scam Detection. The setting and wording can differ by Android release, language, and device configuration.

Review the sender, links, urgency, payment request, and any request for a verification code before choosing Not a scam. A message that appears to come from your bank can still be fraudulent if it asks you to move money, install an app, or disclose a code. Open the institution’s official app or type its known website address yourself instead of tapping a link in the message.

Prevent a legitimate sender from being misclassified again
- Save a confirmed business number or short code in Contacts when appropriate.
- Use the conversation’s safe/not-spam control rather than reporting the message again.
- Ask the organization whether it uses a different sending number for alerts and whether replies are supported.
- If a time-sensitive code was filtered, request one new code only after checking that the account’s recovery number and device time are correct.
When Google Play Protect blocks or disables an app
What Play Protect can do
Google Play Protect checks apps installed from Google Play and apps obtained from other sources. Depending on its assessment, it can warn you, prevent an installation, disable an installed app, or remove harmful software. It may also block an unverified app that requests sensitive permissions. An app being outside Google Play is not automatic proof of malware, but it does remove one layer of review and raises the burden of verification.
Check the app before overriding anything
- Confirm the exact app name, package or developer identity, and the developer’s official website or support channel.
- Verify that you obtained the installer from the developer or another source the developer explicitly endorses. Avoid files forwarded through chats, pop-up advertisements, or unknown download pages.
- Read the permissions the app requests. Treat access to SMS, accessibility services, contacts, files, microphone, camera, or device administration as a reason to pause and establish why that access is necessary.
- Check whether the app’s signature, version, and download instructions match the developer’s published information. A familiar name alone is not sufficient because malicious apps can imitate legitimate names and icons.
- Consider whether you can obtain the same function from a maintained, signed version distributed through a recognized store or the developer’s documented channel.
If you cannot independently establish the source and developer, leave the app blocked. A business need or a warning from a colleague does not make an unknown installer safe.

Appeal a mistaken classification
If you have verified that the developer and distribution channel are legitimate and Play Protect is wrong, use Google’s appeal route rather than disabling protection across the device. Google Play Protect help says, “If you believe that your app was incorrectly flagged or blocked by Google Play Protect, file an appeal.” The appeal is handled by Google and the app’s developer; approval is not guaranteed, and it does not make an unsafe copy safe.
Keep the blocked package, version, source, and the exact warning text available when contacting the developer or filing the appeal. Do not download a “patched,” “cracked,” or replacement APK offered by a stranger while waiting for a review.

Do not immediately reinstall the same file. First disconnect the app from accounts and review its permissions and recent activity from a separate trusted device if the app handled banking, email, passwords, or authentication codes. Change exposed credentials through the service’s official website, revoke suspicious sessions, and run the device’s built-in security checks. Ask the developer for a clean, signed release and an explanation of the detection; if none is available, keep the app removed.

Bank and financial-institution calls require extra verification
Why caller ID is not enough
Fraudsters can spoof the number displayed for a bank or card issuer. A call that appears to come from a familiar support line can still be fake, so do not treat a matching number as authentication. Hang up and call the institution using the number printed on your payment card, an official statement, or its official website.
How Verified financial calls works
Android’s Verified financial calls feature can ask a bank’s official app to verify a call. Google’s help describes it this way: “When your bank calls, your Android phone can automatically ask your bank’s official app for verification.” Eligibility is specific: the phone must run Android 11 or later, the bank must participate, its official app must be installed, and you must have signed in to that app beforehand. Availability therefore depends on both the country and the participating bank.
If verification fails, Android may end the call. That behavior is a safety response, not evidence that the bank is fraudulent. Use the institution’s published callback route, and never bypass a failed verification by returning the caller’s number from your recent-call list.
A practical decision tree for false positives
The item is a call
- Unexpected or unverifiable: do not share information; end the call and use an official callback number.
- Verified and labeled spam: Recents > call details > Not spam > Unblock.
- Still blocked: inspect the Phone app’s blocked-number list and confirm that the organization is using the expected number.
The item is a message
- In Spam & blocked: read the warning, verify the sender independently, then choose the safe/not-spam action if genuine.
- Requests money, codes, links, or urgent action: use the organization’s official app or website instead of replying or tapping.
- Scam Detection is unavailable: do not infer that the message is safe; eligibility is limited by device, country, and language.
The item is an app
- Source or developer cannot be confirmed: keep the installation blocked.
- Source is confirmed and warning appears mistaken: record the version and warning, contact the developer through its official channel, and file an appeal.
- App was disabled or removed: do not reinstall an altered copy; secure accounts and wait for a trustworthy release or explanation.
What not to do when Android makes a mistake
- Do not disable every spam or security feature simply because one item was misclassified.
- Do not call back a financial institution using the number displayed in a suspicious call.
- Do not trust a text’s branding, logo, or caller’s knowledge of personal details as proof of identity.
- Do not grant sensitive permissions to an app merely because Play Protect’s warning is inconvenient.
- Do not report a legitimate Messages conversation as spam again; reporting blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked.
When to leave the block in place
Keep the protection in place when you cannot verify the caller, sender, app source, or developer through an independent channel. A false-positive correction is appropriate only after verification. For calls and texts, the cost of waiting for an official callback is usually lower than disclosing an account credential. For apps, preserving Play Protect’s block avoids granting unknown code access to contacts, files, messages, accessibility controls, or financial accounts while a classification is reviewed.
