First identify the exact iPad model and its installed iPadOS version. Install any update Apple offers, then compare the resulting version with the app’s minimum requirement in the App Store. If the iPad cannot reach that requirement, use only alternatives the app developer supports—such as a browser or another device—and consider replacement only after checking the candidate iPad’s operating-system support.
Start with the compatibility facts
An “old iPad” is not a precise compatibility category. Two iPads that look similar can support different iPadOS versions, and each app sets its own minimum operating-system requirement. Without the app name, iPad model and installed version, nobody can give an honest yes-or-no verdict for a particular case.
Use this order:
- Record the model and installed iPadOS version.
- Check whether Apple offers an update for that device.
- Read the app’s current minimum iPadOS requirement.
- If the device still falls short, look for a developer-supported browser or another supported device.
- Only then evaluate a replacement iPad.
Changing a child’s account age, purchase approval or parental-control settings cannot make an incompatible app run.
1. Identify the iPad model and software
Find the model and serial details
On the iPad, open Settings > General > About. Note the entries for Model Name, Model Number and iPadOS Version. The model name is more useful than a description such as “an iPad from school” or “the small one,” because support depends on the exact hardware generation.

If the screen is too damaged to navigate, the model may also be printed on the rear casing or shown in the device list for the child’s Apple Account. Do not guess from screen size alone; several generations share similar dimensions.
Check for an update offered to that device
- Connect the iPad to power and a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Read the version Apple offers. An offer to update is not proof that the app will work; the resulting iPadOS version must meet the app’s requirement.
- If an update appears, back up important photos, schoolwork and app data before installing it, then install the update and restart the iPad.
If Software Update says the iPad is up to date, or no newer version is offered, treat that as the device’s current limit for this troubleshooting decision. Do not install unofficial firmware or profiles that claim to bypass Apple’s compatibility checks.
2. Read the app’s actual minimum requirement
Check the App Store listing
Open the app’s listing in the App Store and look for the compatibility or requirements section. Record the minimum iPadOS version exactly as shown. A listing can change when the developer releases a new version, so use the current listing rather than an old screenshot, review or message from another parent.

Also check whether the listing identifies an iPad-specific version, required hardware capability or an age rating. The minimum operating system is the gate that matters first: an app may be free, approved for a child’s age and visible in search while still refusing to install on that iPad.

When the listing is unclear
Use the app developer’s official support page or help contact. Ask which iPadOS versions and device types are currently supported, and whether the developer offers a browser edition or another official access route. Do not assume that an iPhone version, a web search result or a similarly named app is an approved substitute.
Give support the exact model name, iPadOS version and app version when possible. “It will not download” is less useful than the precise message, such as “requires a newer version of iPadOS” or “not compatible with this device.”
3. Decide what the result means

This distinction prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing settings when the App Store is enforcing a minimum operating-system or hardware requirement.

4. Look for an official alternative if the iPad cannot update
Browser access
Some services provide a browser-based version, but availability is app-specific and cannot be assumed. The developer should identify the correct web address, supported browsers and whether child accounts, saved progress, downloads or parental features work in a browser. Use the developer’s own instructions rather than an unofficial mirror or download site.

Another supported device
The developer may support a newer iPad, an iPhone, a computer or another platform. Confirm the operating-system requirement for that platform and whether the child’s account, purchases and progress carry over. A device being newer does not by itself establish compatibility.
A previously acquired version
If the family previously downloaded the app with the same Apple Account, the App Store’s account history may offer an older compatible release. This is only a possibility: the developer and Apple determine whether an older build remains available, and some apps require a current server connection that an old build cannot use. Check the account’s purchased-app history and read the prompt carefully; stop if the offered version is not clearly from the developer.
5. Use parental controls for access, not compatibility
Screen Time, Family Sharing and a child account can control which apps a child may use, request and purchase. Apple’s family-safety guidance also covers age ratings and in-app controls. These tools decide access after an app can run; they do not lower the app’s minimum iPadOS requirement.

Apple’s guidance for the redesigned parental-control experience calls for specified current operating-system versions across the family group. If every family device cannot update, Apple says the family can continue using the earlier Screen Time and parental-control version or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Feature availability therefore varies by operating-system version.

That fallback preserves supervision settings but does not install an incompatible app. Do not disable restrictions, change the child’s age or turn off purchase approval as a compatibility experiment; those changes affect safety and billing, not the code the iPad can execute.

A replacement is reasonable when the app is important, no supported alternative exists and the current iPad cannot meet the requirement. Start with the app requirement, not with a popular model name.
Use a two-part check
- Write down the app’s minimum iPadOS version and any model or hardware limitation supplied by the developer.
- For each candidate iPad, verify the exact model’s currently supported iPadOS range from Apple’s documentation or the seller’s technical listing.
- Reject a candidate if its support is not clearly above the app’s minimum, or if the developer excludes that model.
- After purchase, update the iPad before installing the child’s app and recheck the listing.
Apple’s accessibility conformance report for iPad (A16) describes that device as running iPadOS 18 in the report. That document does not establish that the model runs any particular child’s app, so it is an example of why a model name alone is not a compatibility verdict.

Questions to answer before paying
- What exact iPadOS version does the app require today?
- Will the candidate model receive an iPadOS version at least that new?
- Does the developer exclude a processor, screen size or other device class?
- Will the child’s account, purchases and saved progress transfer?
- Can the family keep the desired Screen Time and content restrictions on the candidate device?
Keep the receipt and confirm the app immediately while the return period is available. A replacement chosen without the requirement check can reproduce the same problem at a higher cost.

7. Troubleshoot the common failure messages
“Requires a newer version of iPadOS”
Compare the required version in the message or listing with Settings > General > About. Then check Settings > General > Software Update. If no offered update reaches the requirement, move to the developer-alternative step rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app.
“Not compatible with this iPad”
This wording can indicate a hardware-model exclusion, not just an old operating system. Record the model identifier and ask the developer which models are supported. A newer iPadOS version may not change the result if the required hardware is absent.
The app installs but will not open or sign in
Check whether the developer requires a newer app build, a supported browser, a network connection or a current account service. Capture the exact error and contact the developer. Avoid installing modified app packages; they can expose the child’s account and may violate the service’s terms.
The app disappeared after an update
Open the child’s purchase history and verify that the same Apple Account is signed in. If the developer withdrew the app or raised its requirement, an older download may no longer be offered. Account recovery or a purchase request setting can restore access to an account, but cannot restore a version the developer no longer supports.
8. Keep the child safe when changing the access route
When switching to a browser, another device or a different app, review the age rating, privacy choices, chat or sharing features and in-app purchase controls. Apple’s family-safety guidance recommends reviewing ratings and controls rather than relying on the label alone.
Set Screen Time limits and purchase approval again on the replacement device or browser-supported service. Explain to the child which account to use and where to ask before installing anything. A workaround that bypasses the family’s supervision rules solves the technical problem by creating a safety problem.
What to collect before contacting support
- iPad model name and model number from Settings > General > About.
- Installed iPadOS version from the same screen.
- The exact app name, developer name and current App Store version.
- The complete error message, including any required version number.
- Whether Software Update offers a newer release.
- The child’s account type and whether the app was previously acquired.
With those details, Apple Support can explain device-update limits, while the app developer can confirm supported models, browser access, account requirements and any older-release policy. Keeping those responsibilities separate usually produces a faster answer than changing family settings at random.
