Enable NFC, remove the phone case and nearby cards or metal, and hold the phone’s NFC antenna over the tag for several seconds while moving slowly around the likely antenna area. Restart and update the phone and authentication app, then test with a second NFC-capable phone or a certified external reader. A failed read is not, by itself, proof that a product is counterfeit.
If the tag remains unreadable, save the tag ID, receipt, serial number, screenshots and clear photos. Use the product maker’s official authentication page, app or support channel for a definitive check or replacement.
First, make one clean scanning attempt
Before changing settings or contacting support, remove the variables that most often prevent NFC from coupling with a tag.
- Open the phone’s quick settings or Settings app and confirm that NFC is enabled. On Android, the switch is commonly under Connected devices, Connections or a similarly named wireless-settings section; the exact label varies by model and software version.
- Take the phone out of a thick, magnetic or metal case. Remove payment cards, access cards and other NFC tags from the case or the back of the phone.
- Move away from another phone, NFC reader, wireless charging pad, metal table, magnets and other electronic equipment while testing.
- Place the product tag on a non-metal surface. Hold the phone close to the tag without sliding it rapidly, and keep it still for several seconds.
- Try the upper back, centre and top edge of the phone. Antenna placement is model-specific, so the first position you try may not be the active one.
If the phone vibrates, displays a notification or opens the maker’s app, follow that service’s verification result rather than relying on the raw tag contents.

Find the phone’s NFC antenna
NFC works only when the phone’s antenna and the tag’s antenna are close enough and aligned well enough to exchange power and data. Manufacturers place the antenna in different parts of the handset, and a case can make the effective distance shorter.
Android phones
Start with the upper half of the back and then make a slow sweep toward the top edge and centre. Xiaomi’s instructions for the POCO F6 Pro place the antenna near the upper frame and recommend bringing that area close to the centre of the tag or reader. Other Android models may use a different location, so do not assume that the camera bump, logo or wireless-charging coil marks the NFC antenna.
iPhone
Hold the top of the iPhone over the tag for one to two seconds. If nothing happens, move that top edge across the tag in small increments while keeping the phone close. The NFC reader area is not necessarily the centre of the back.
When the tag has a printed position marker
Some products show a symbol or outline indicating where to tap. Use it as a starting point, not as a guarantee that every phone model will read from the same angle. Keep the phone and tag parallel when possible, then try a slight rotation if the first attempt fails.

Remove interference from cases, cards and nearby objects
Physical barriers and electromagnetic interference can make a working tag appear dead. Thick plastic increases the gap between antennas. Metal and magnets can absorb, detune or redirect the short-range field, while cards and other NFC devices may compete for the reader’s attention.
- Remove wallet cases and any card stored between the phone and the tag.
- Remove magnetic rings, metal plates, kickstands and decorative inserts.
- Do not test on a metal counter, laptop lid or vehicle surface; use wood, paper or another non-metal surface.
- Separate the product from other NFC tags, contactless cards and phones.
- Turn off or move a nearby NFC reader while making the test.
Xiaomi identifies nearby electromagnetic interference from devices or metal objects as a cause of reduced card-recognition sensitivity. Samsung likewise warns that non-genuine covers containing magnets, cards or metal can interfere with NFC communication. Huawei’s troubleshooting guidance also lists physical barriers and nearby NFC equipment among possible causes.
Use a slow, deliberate search pattern
Rapidly swiping over the tag can miss the short coupling window. Hold the tag and phone close, pause, and move only a few millimetres at a time.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Start with the likely antenna area over the centre of the tag and pause for two to three seconds.
- Move in a slow horizontal line across the tag, pause, then repeat vertically.
- Try the upper back, centre and top edge of the phone, keeping each position still.
- Reverse the orientation: turn the phone 90 degrees and repeat the same pattern.
- If the tag is attached to a curved or metal-backed product, test at its marked position and then at the nearest flat edge.
Keep the distance as small as practical without pressing hard enough to damage the tag or product. A successful read may take a moment if the authentication app must contact a server after the initial NFC exchange.

Reset the phone and authentication software
Once the physical setup is clean, reset the software path before deciding that the tag or phone is defective.
- Toggle NFC off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.
- Close the authentication app and reopen it. If the maker requires a particular app, make sure that app—not an unrelated NFC reader—is installed and signed in as required.
- Restart the phone.
- Install pending operating-system updates and update the manufacturer’s authentication app from the phone’s official app store.
- Unlock the phone before tapping if the product instructions require an unlocked screen, then retry the slow search pattern.
- Check that mobile data or Wi-Fi is available if the verification service needs an internet connection.
Samsung and Xiaomi include toggling NFC, restarting and updating software in their official troubleshooting steps. An update can fix reader behavior or app compatibility, but it cannot repair a physically damaged or deactivated tag.
Separate a phone problem from a tag problem
The most useful next test is a different reader. It tells you whether the failure follows the phone or follows the tag.
| Test | What it isolates | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Same tag, second NFC-capable phone | Phone hardware, case and operating-system differences | If the second phone reads it, troubleshoot the first phone or its case. If neither reads it, continue with a reader test and support. |
| Same tag, certified external reader | Phone antenna and phone software | A reader that detects the tag points toward a phone-specific issue. No detection suggests a damaged, deactivated or unsupported tag, though the tag technology still has to be compatible. |
| Several known-good NFC tags on the original phone | Whether the phone can read NFC at all | If other tags also fail, focus on NFC settings, hardware or the phone case. If other tags work, focus on the authenticity tag, its placement or the maker’s service. |
| Authentication app opened but gives no verification | Server-side verification and account or network path | The NFC link worked; follow the maker’s error message and support process rather than repeatedly tapping. |
The NFC Forum lists the Socket Mobile SocketScan S370 as a certified reader. Use a certified, compatible reader when one is available; an arbitrary USB accessory may not support the tag’s technology or authentication workflow.

Does a failed NFC scan mean the product is fake?
No. A failed scan is a connectivity or service symptom, not a counterfeit verdict. The phone may be using the wrong antenna position, a case may be blocking the field, the operating system may need an update, or the tag may be outside the phone’s supported NFC technology.
Authenticity is decided by the product maker’s verification process. NFC Forum security guidance describes digital signatures on NFC tags as a way to help ensure the authenticity and integrity of tag data. Security implementations can also use passwords, strong authentication and access control. STMicroelectronics describes systems that combine HMAC or ECDSA signatures with server-side analytics and blocklists. Those checks are meaningful only when the manufacturer’s service actually validates them.
A successful read is not automatically proof either. A static URL or ordinary NDEF record can be readable without proving that the physical item is genuine. Treat the maker’s verification result, serial-number checks and any instructions from its official support team as authoritative. If the result is missing, contradictory or inaccessible, stop treating the NFC response as a verdict and request manual verification.
What to record before contacting the manufacturer
Preserve evidence while the product, packaging and tag are together. Do not scrape, peel or rewrite the tag in an attempt to make it work.

- Product name, model, serial number, batch or lot number and purchase date.
- Receipt, order confirmation and seller details.
- The tag ID, if the phone or app displays one even though verification fails.
- Exact wording of any app, browser or NFC notification.
- Screenshots showing the failed scan or verification error.
- Clear photos of the tag, its printed code and its position on the product.
- Phone model, operating-system version, authentication-app version and whether the case was removed.
- Which tests worked: original phone, second phone, known-good tag and certified reader.
Use only the manufacturer’s official authentication page, app or support channel. A vendor support guide specifically asks customers to include screenshots and the tag ID when reporting a scan issue. Ask whether the tag can be reissued, whether the product can be verified manually, and whether the seller needs to be contacted.
Common situations and the right next action
The phone never reacts anywhere on the tag
Confirm NFC is enabled, remove the case and cards, then repeat the antenna search. Test a known-good NFC tag. If that also fails after a restart and update, the phone’s NFC hardware or software is the leading suspect; use the phone maker’s support service.
The tag works only with the case removed
The case or its contents are attenuating the field. Keep cards and metal inserts away during authentication, or replace the case with a non-magnetic design that leaves the NFC area unobstructed.

Compare antenna position, NFC settings, operating-system version and authentication-app version. The tag is communicating with at least one reader, so concentrate on the first phone’s case, software or hardware.
No phone or reader detects the tag
Do not declare the product counterfeit from that result alone. The tag may be damaged, deactivated, detached from its antenna, or built with a technology unsupported by the readers used. Preserve the evidence and request official verification or a replacement tag.
The tag opens a page but the page cannot verify it
Record the page address, error text and tag ID. Check the network connection and the maker’s service status if the manufacturer provides one, then contact official support. A readable URL by itself does not establish authenticity.
A compact decision checklist
- NFC enabled and phone unlocked where required.
- Case, cards, magnets and metal removed.
- Phone and tag separated from other NFC devices and metal surfaces.
- Upper back, centre and top edge tested with a slow, close sweep.
- NFC toggled, phone restarted and operating system and authentication app updated.
- Second NFC-capable phone or certified reader tested.
- Tag ID, screenshots, receipt, serial number and photos saved.
- Official manufacturer verification or support channel contacted.
There is no dependable published percentage for how often NFC authenticity tags fail to scan, so a failure-rate assumption cannot replace these device-specific tests. The practical goal is to establish whether the problem is antenna alignment, interference, phone software, reader compatibility, the tag itself or the verification service—and then let the manufacturer make the authenticity decision.
