Start by identifying the phone’s exact model and regional variant, then check that model with the intended US carrier’s current compatibility tool. An imported phone can be unlocked yet still lack the US frequency bands, network technology, or VoLTE implementation needed for calls. If the device passes the carrier check, troubleshoot activation, account status, settings, outages, and location-specific coverage before replacing hardware.

Why an imported phone can be unlocked but still fail in the US

“Unlocked” only means the handset is not restricted to one carrier’s SIM or network account. It does not guarantee that the radio supports a US carrier’s bands, that the software is approved for that network, or that voice service can use the carrier’s LTE system.

AT&T explains that devices using different cellular technology or unsupported frequency bands cannot use its network services (AT&T device compatibility guidance). T-Mobile similarly says a phone must support both the local network frequency and the technology, such as 5G or 4G LTE (T-Mobile network requirements). Verizon requires a BYOD handset to be unlocked and to have compatible hardware and software, verified with its device-ID checker (Verizon BYOD FAQs).

That is why changing a SIM, editing an APN, or buying a signal booster cannot add a missing radio band or make an unsupported voice implementation compatible.

  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Identify the failure before changing settings

Write down the following information before troubleshooting:

  • Manufacturer, full model number, and regional variant. A model sold in Europe, Asia, or another market may differ internally from the US version with a similar name.
  • Operating-system version and whether the phone has carrier-branded firmware.
  • The US carrier and plan you are trying to use.
  • Whether the problem is no registration anywhere, weak or intermittent signal, mobile data only, outgoing calls, incoming calls, or calls that drop in particular places.
  • What the status bar shows: 5G, LTE, 4G, emergency calls only, or no service.

Test at home, outdoors, at work, and on a route where service is normally needed. Note whether mobile data works while voice fails. A location-only problem points toward coverage, congestion, or building penetration; failure everywhere points more strongly to compatibility, activation, or account status.

Run the carrier’s eligibility check first

  1. Confirm the phone is unlocked. Ask the original carrier or seller if the status is uncertain. T-Mobile’s BYOD guide says an imported handset must be unlocked and advises contacting the original carrier for an unlock code (T-Mobile BYOD guide).
  2. Find the IMEI or device ID. On most phones, dial *#06#, or open the device information screen. Use the IMEI for the exact handset, not a similar model name.
  3. Enter it into the intended carrier’s current checker. T-Mobile provides an IMEI compatibility check; Verizon uses a device ID. AT&T directs customers to its supported-device information. Save or screenshot the result, including any warning that only some services are supported.
  4. Repeat the check after a SIM or eSIM change only if the carrier requests it. A clean eligibility result applies to the handset identity and software configuration, not merely to the SIM.

A rejected result is a compatibility finding, not a setting that can usually be repaired. Ask the carrier whether the exact variant is blocked, unsupported, or simply absent from its database. If the manufacturer confirms missing bands or voice limitations, use a handset whose exact model is verified before purchasing a replacement.

Compare bands, network technology, and voice support

Frequency bands and radio technology

Each carrier operates specific bands in each area. The phone must support the relevant band and the technology carried on it. T-Mobile states: “To connect to the local network, your device must support both our network frequency (band) and the technology (5G, 4G LTE, 2G).” Its network information lists LTE bands including bands 12 and 71 as Extended Range LTE; those bands are not equally necessary in every location, so compare the phone’s exact specifications with the local coverage map and eligibility result.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

AT&T likewise identifies incompatible cellular technology and missing frequency bands as common reasons a device will not work. Generic labels such as “GSM,” “LTE,” or “unlocked 5G” are not sufficient proof of compatibility.

VoLTE is a separate voice requirement

Voice can fail even when LTE data works. VoLTE (voice over LTE) carries calls through the LTE network; the carrier must support the phone’s implementation and provision the line for it. T-Mobile specifically recommends checking VoLTE for BYOD devices and says its guide can be affected by settings from the phone’s original carrier.

When data works but calls fail, ask support to confirm all three points: the model and variant are approved, VoLTE or HD Voice is enabled for the line, and voice service is provisioned on the account. Do not rely on hidden diagnostic menus or unofficial firmware changes as a general fix; an unsupported implementation may remain unable to register for voice.

Rule out activation, account, and outage problems

Activation and number transfer

A compatible phone can still have no usable service if the line is not active. Check that the account is paid and not suspended, the correct SIM or eSIM is assigned, and the phone number has finished transferring from the previous carrier. Verizon says a number transfer can take up to 72 hours before the number is active on its network (Verizon call troubleshooter).

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

During a transfer, test whether temporary service works with the assigned number or a temporary number shown in the carrier account. Contact the carrier if the transfer window has passed or if the account shows conflicting SIM and device information.

Outages and congestion

Check the carrier’s outage page or support channel and test again later. A local outage or heavy congestion can cause dropped calls on an otherwise compatible phone. Verizon lists outages, congestion, account issues, settings, and signal conditions among possible causes.

Check phone settings and refresh registration

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off. This forces a fresh network search.
  2. Restart the phone. Verizon explicitly recommends restarting as part of call troubleshooting.
  3. Ensure the preferred network mode allows the carrier’s current technology. Avoid forcing an unusual mode such as 2G-only or LTE-only unless carrier support directs you.
  4. Verify the active SIM or eSIM line is enabled. On dual-SIM phones, select the intended line for voice and cellular data.
  5. Enable Wi-Fi Calling or Advanced Calling/VoLTE when the carrier and handset support it. Menu names vary by operating-system version; use the phone’s Settings search for “Wi-Fi Calling,” “VoLTE,” or “HD Voice.”
  6. Install pending system or carrier-configuration updates, then restart again.
  7. Reset network settings only after recording Wi-Fi passwords and VPN details. This removes saved network information but does not add unsupported bands.

If a setting is missing, greyed out, or returns after a reboot, that can indicate the carrier does not provision the imported software build for voice. Ask support about the exact model rather than forcing a code or unofficial firmware.

Separate coverage problems from hardware compatibility

Move to an open outdoor location and compare the result with a known-working phone on the same carrier. If both phones lose service, the issue is probably local coverage or an outage. If only the imported phone fails, return to the model, band, and VoLTE checks.

T-Mobile states that coverage and access are not guaranteed everywhere and that performance and functionality of non-T-Mobile devices may vary. Its network page also claims 4G LTE supplements 5G coverage for 99% of Americans nationwide; that is a carrier-published statement, not an independent measurement or a promise of service at a particular address. Use the carrier’s current map for your home, workplace, and regular routes rather than relying on a nationwide percentage.

Carrier-specific checks

T-Mobile

  • Confirm the imported phone is unlocked.
  • Run T-Mobile’s IMEI compatibility checker for the exact device.
  • Verify support for VoLTE and Extended Range LTE.
  • Compare the phone’s supported bands with the local network and coverage needs.
  • Remember that T-Mobile says it cannot test non-T-Mobile device call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functionality; original-carrier settings can affect the experience.

AT&T

  • Use AT&T’s supported-device information and eligibility process rather than assuming generic GSM, LTE, or an unlocked label is enough.
  • Pay particular attention to incompatible cellular technology and unsupported frequency bands, which AT&T identifies as reasons a device cannot use its services.

Verizon

  • Verify the phone is unlocked and has compatible hardware and software.
  • Use Verizon’s device-ID compatibility check.
  • Check Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi Calling, and Advanced Calling/VoLTE settings, then restart.
  • Investigate outages, congestion, account status, number-transfer timing, and location-specific signal conditions.

When replacing the phone is the practical answer

Replacement is justified when the carrier checker rejects the handset, the manufacturer confirms a missing US band or incompatible voice implementation, or the phone repeatedly loses registration despite an active account and adequate local coverage. Before buying, record the full model and regional variant and run that exact device ID through the intended carrier’s current checker. “Unlocked 5G” alone is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

A SIM swap, APN edit, or signal booster may help an activation or reception issue, but none can correct a missing radio band or unsupported VoLTE implementation. Keep the rejected checker result and the carrier’s explanation; they will help determine whether the phone can be returned or used on another network.

  1. Exact-model IMEI or device-ID eligibility.
  2. Supported frequency bands and network technologies in the places you need service.
  3. VoLTE or equivalent voice support and carrier approval of the handset’s software configuration.
  4. Coverage at home, work, and along regular routes, not only a nationwide map.
  5. Activation, SIM/eSIM, number-transfer, and account requirements.

Only after all five checks pass should price or plan features influence the decision. Carrier compatibility databases and band requirements can change, so rerun the check shortly before activation or purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my imported phone show LTE but have no voice service?

LTE data does not prove that the handset and carrier support VoLTE voice. Have the carrier verify VoLTE/HD Voice provisioning and approval for the exact model and regional variant.

Can a new SIM fix an imported phone with no signal?

Only when the underlying problem is SIM or account activation. A SIM cannot add missing frequency bands, network technologies, or an unsupported voice implementation.

How long can a US number transfer take?

Verizon says a transfer from another wireless carrier can take up to 72 hours before the number is active on its network. Contact the carrier if that window has passed.
