If an AI mortgage assistant gives you wrong information or your application stops moving, treat it as a documentation and status problem first: preserve the record, identify where the bad information appears, contact the lender through a verified channel, and ask for a specific correction or next step. A denial or other adverse decision requires a separate review of the lender’s written reasons. An application delay is not automatically a servicing error, and U.S. law does not give every applicant a guaranteed human review or a universal deadline for an origination response.
Start by classifying what went wrong
The right remedy depends on the location of the error, the stage of the mortgage, and what the lender has done so far. Do not assume that a chatbot message, a missing document request, a credit-report mistake, and a formal denial are the same event.
| Situation | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong value in an online application | The lender’s application record may contain an incorrect income, employment, debt, property, or identity entry. | Tell the lender exactly which field is wrong and provide the supporting document. |
| Incorrect item on a credit report | The source of the problem is a consumer-reporting file used in underwriting. | Obtain the report, identify the inaccurate item, and dispute it with the relevant credit bureau. |
| No update or repeated requests | The origination file may be incomplete, assigned to a queue, or waiting for a review. | Ask what step is pending, what information is missing, who owns the next action, and when you should check back. |
| Formal denial or another adverse action | The creditor has taken an action that may trigger notice duties under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) and Regulation B. | Request the written adverse-action notice and examine its principal reasons. |
| Problem after closing | The issue may concern mortgage servicing rather than application origination. | Contact the servicer and use the applicable servicing-error process if the facts fit it. |
These categories can overlap. For example, a wrong debt balance in a credit report can lead to a denial, while a typo in the lender’s own application file may simply delay underwriting. Write down the sequence so you can explain which event happened first.

Preserve evidence before changing anything
Save the application reference number, confirmation emails, uploaded documents, status screens, chatbot transcripts, and every message from the lender. Take screenshots that show the date, the exact wording, and any status or error code. Keep a timeline with the date and time of each submission, call, request for information, correction, and promised follow-up.

- Download or print the final version of each application page before you edit it.
- Keep the original document and the corrected document with clear file names, such as
income_statement_original.pdfandincome_statement_corrected.pdf. - Record the name or team of the person who accepts your correction and the channel used.
- Do not send full account numbers, passwords, or identity documents to an unverified chatbot or email address.
Evidence is useful whether the issue is a simple data-entry mistake, an unexplained delay, a credit-report dispute, or a possible discrimination complaint. It also prevents a later conversation from relying on your memory of what an automated system displayed.
Contact the lender with a precise correction request
Use the lender’s official website, statement, application portal, or telephone number to verify the contact channel. Do not rely solely on a phone number displayed in an unexpected text or an AI-generated message. Ask for the mortgage-origination or application team if the loan has not closed.
- Identify the file. Give your name, application reference, property address, and submission date using only the secure information the lender requests.
- Name the exact problem. Quote the incorrect field, statement, or status message. “The application is wrong” is less actionable than “The portal lists my annual salary as $48,000; the uploaded pay documents show $84,000.”
- Attach proof safely. Use the lender’s secure upload tool or another verified channel. Explain which page or document supports the correction.
- Ask what will be changed. Request confirmation that the lender’s record has been corrected, not merely that a note was added to the file.
- Ask for the current stage. Request the outstanding item, the team responsible, and the next action required from you.
- Set a follow-up point. Ask when you should check the portal or contact the team again. This is a practical follow-up agreement, not a statutory promise of approval or a universal response deadline.
- Confirm in writing. After a call, send a secure message summarizing what was reported, what documents were provided, and what the representative said would happen next.
Ask the representative to read back the corrected information when possible. If the portal continues to show the old value, report the mismatch and keep both screenshots. An AI assistant may display a corrected answer while the lender’s underwriting file remains unchanged; only the lender can confirm the official record.

Find the missing step
A “stalled” status can mean that underwriting is waiting for a pay stub, appraisal, verification, title item, explanation of a deposit, or an internal review. Ask for the specific condition rather than accepting a generic status such as “in progress.” Request a list of open conditions and ask which ones are yours to complete.

Check for contradictory instructions
Compare the latest request with earlier messages. If one channel says a document was received while another says it is missing, send the conflicting messages to the lender and ask which record controls. Do not repeatedly upload slightly different files without asking whether the previous version was rejected and why; duplicates can make the file harder to review.
Escalate inside the institution
If the first contact cannot explain the status, ask for a supervisor, loan officer, or designated application escalation team. Describe the unresolved item and provide your timeline. Keep the tone factual: identify what was promised, what has not occurred, and what answer you need. A complaint or regulatory inquiry may be appropriate later, but the originating lender is usually the place to correct an application record or clarify an underwriting condition.
Federal materials do not establish one universal response deadline for every pending mortgage application. A lender’s internal service-level target, a purchase-contract deadline, and a legal notice requirement are different things. If a transaction has a contractual closing date, tell the lender immediately and ask what written extension or contingency steps are available; do not assume the lender can meet the date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Ask for the written adverse-action notice and keep it with your file. Under the CFPB’s Circular 2022-03, creditors must comply with ECOA and Regulation B notice requirements even when they use complex or automated models. The CFPB’s September 19, 2023 announcement made the point plainly: CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said, “There is no special exemption for artificial intelligence.”

Read the principal reasons carefully
The notice should state the specific, accurate principal reasons for the action. The reasons should relate to the factors the creditor actually considered or scored. A generic statement that you failed an internal standard or did not achieve a qualifying score may not communicate the actual principal reason, according to the CFPB’s explanation of Regulation B.
Compare each reason with your documents. If the notice says your debt-to-income ratio was too high, check the debts and income figures used. If it cites a delinquency, check whether the account and date are accurate. Ask the lender to review any factual error and provide the documents that contradict it. A notice does not guarantee that correcting a fact will produce approval, but it gives you a concrete basis for requesting review.
Do not assume a manual review is guaranteed
The requirement to provide accurate reasons is not the same as a universal right to have every automated output reviewed by a person. Ask whether a human underwriter can review the corrected information, but understand that the lender’s policies and the facts of the application determine what review is available.
Correcting an error in a credit report
First obtain the credit report the lender used, if available, and identify the exact account, balance, payment history, or identity information that is wrong. FTC mortgage guidance advises consumers to check credit-report accuracy and dispute inaccurate information with the credit bureau. Direct the dispute to the bureau that displays the error and include supporting records.

- Describe the item precisely, including the account name, account number’s last digits, dates, and the information you believe is wrong.
- Explain the correction you are requesting and attach legible evidence.
- Keep a copy of the dispute, delivery confirmation, and any response.
- Tell the mortgage lender that a dispute is pending and ask whether it can reconsider the application after the report is updated.
Separate a credit-bureau dispute from a correction to the lender’s own application file. Sending a pay stub to a bureau will not fix an incorrect income field in the lender’s portal, and asking the lender to edit its portal will not correct a tradeline maintained by a bureau. Neither process guarantees a decision by a particular date.
Origination delays are different from servicing errors
Regulation X addresses parts of the mortgage process, including applications, origination, and servicing. Its error-resolution provisions concern mortgage servicing. The servicer’s response procedure for a properly submitted notice of error can involve correcting the account or sending a written explanation after investigation.
That servicing procedure should not be presented as a general remedy or deadline for an application that has not closed. If you are still seeking the loan, start with the lender’s application or origination contact and make a written request identifying the exact missing step. If you already have a loan and the problem involves payment posting, escrow, payoff, or another servicing matter, ask the servicer where to submit a servicing-error notice and follow the instructions for that process.

Do not infer discrimination solely because an AI system made a mistake, and do not discard the possibility because the lender says the decision was automated. The technology does not replace the creditor’s legal obligations. The CFPB’s ECOA resource page reports an April 22, 2026 final rule amending Regulation B provisions concerning disparate impact, discouragement, and special purpose credit programs. Because rule text and effective status can change, check the current rule and the appropriate complaint route before relying on detailed interpretations.
A message you can send to the lender
Use the lender’s secure message system and adapt this structure:
“I am contacting you about mortgage application [reference] submitted on [date] for [property]. The record appears to contain this error: [exact field or statement]. The accurate information is [correction], supported by [document]. Please confirm whether the official application file has been corrected, list any remaining conditions, and tell me the current stage and next action. If the application has been denied or another adverse action has been taken, please provide the written notice stating the specific principal reasons.”

Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying on the chatbot transcript alone: an assistant’s answer may not update the underwriting file.
- Using an unverified contact channel: mortgage documents contain sensitive financial and identity data.
- Arguing from a generic denial: request the written principal reasons and test each one against the facts.
- Confusing a credit-report dispute with a lender correction: send each request to the party that controls the inaccurate record.
- Calling an origination delay a servicing error: servicing procedures generally apply after a loan is being serviced, not while an application is pending.
- Expecting an automatic approval after a correction: fixing a fact can change the file without guaranteeing eligibility or a loan offer.
- Assuming every complaint goes to the same regulator: institution type and issue determine the appropriate official channel.
Keep a decision-ready file
Organize a single folder containing the application reference, timeline, screenshots, submitted documents, credit reports, dispute confirmations, denial notice, and lender replies. Put the newest correspondence first and note which facts remain unresolved. This file lets a supervisor, housing counselor, attorney, or regulator understand the issue without reconstructing it from scattered messages.
The practical sequence is consistent: identify where the information is wrong, preserve proof, contact the correct lender or credit bureau, request a specific correction or status update, and scrutinize any adverse-action notice for accurate principal reasons. Escalate with documented facts when the lender does not resolve the problem or when discrimination or another legal violation may be involved.
