Do not submit a manuscript, sign a publishing agreement, or pay a fee based only on an AI journal finder’s recommendation. Treat it as a shortlist lead. Verify the exact journal’s identity, fit, indexing claims, peer-review process, policies, and costs using independent records. If important facts remain unclear—or a career or funder requirement depends on them—ask a subject librarian or your institution’s research-integrity office to review the evidence with you.
Why an AI recommendation needs an independent check
A journal finder can suggest places to consider, but a recommendation does not establish that a journal is legitimate, suitable for your paper, currently indexed, or compliant with your institution’s or funder’s requirements. A match score is not an acceptance probability unless the tool’s documentation explicitly defines and validates it that way. No particular finder or recommendation is identified here, so there is no basis to conclude that AI finders as a class are unreliable—or that a particular journal is predatory. Check the journal’s verifiable facts rather than inferring intent from the recommendation.
Use the result as a starting point, then make a decision based on the paper and journal together. A journal may be real but still be a poor fit because it publishes a different article type, serves another audience, or does not meet a required indexing criterion. Conversely, absence from one directory is not by itself proof of misconduct: directories have different scopes and inclusion criteria.

What to do first: pause and save the recommendation
Before you click through to submit, agree to terms, or pay, preserve what the finder actually showed. Save the recommendation and the date you received it, the journal’s exact title and ISSN, the website address, any solicitation email, and the finder’s explanation for suggesting that journal. These details help an adviser compare the same claims against current records; they are practical records to keep, not a universal formal procedure.

Then make a short list of unresolved claims. For example: “The journal says it is indexed in MEDLINE,” “the finder says it matches my subject,” or “the fee is not clear.” Separating claims this way makes it easier to verify each one against the right source rather than treating an overall AI score as evidence for all of them.
Check whether the journal is the right venue for your paper
Compare the journal’s published aims and scope with your manuscript’s subject, methods, intended audience, and article type. Read recent articles, not just the homepage or promotional description. Ask whether the journal publishes work with a similar focus and format, and whether its readership is one you want to reach. A journal can be genuine and still be unsuitable for a particular manuscript.
Verify the journal’s exact title and publisher, ISSN, editors and editorial board, contact details, peer-review description, publication schedule, author fees, licensing and copyright terms, and policies for corrections, complaints, and research integrity. Look for consistency across the journal website and independent records. A similar-sounding title, a logo, or a claim on a publisher’s marketing page is not enough to establish that you are looking at the same journal named by the finder.

The Think. Check. Submit. journals checklist asks authors to consider whether they or trusted colleagues know the journal, whether its latest papers are discoverable, whether its name is distinct, and whether its policies and relevant memberships can be verified. It advises authors to complete the checklist and submit only if they can answer “yes” to most or all of its questions. Its current English-language checklist was last updated in March 2023, with further amendments in June 2023. Treat listings and memberships—including those associated with COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, or regional scholarly platforms—as evidence to inspect, not as substitutes for checking the journal’s identity and practices.
Verify indexing claims in the database that made the claim
Do not rely on a journal’s indexing logos, a third-party summary, or the AI finder alone. Search the index or directory the journal claims, and match the record’s title and ISSN to the journal in question. Check whether coverage is current rather than historical. If indexing matters for a promotion, degree, grant, or funder rule, confirm that the specific database and status satisfy that requirement.

Do not treat PubMed as a synonym for MEDLINE
PubMed is not proof that a journal is currently indexed in MEDLINE. NLM advises checking the journal’s NLM Catalog record for its current MEDLINE indexing status. An article appearing in PubMed does not necessarily mean its journal is included in MEDLINE or PubMed Central (PMC), and a Catalog record alone does not establish MEDLINE inclusion. NLM also states that the presence of an article or citation in PubMed, MEDLINE, or PMC is not an endorsement by NLM, NIH, or the U.S. federal government. Indexing is a database status, not a guarantee that a journal suits your work or meets every institutional requirement.

Recheck close to submission
Index records, journal policies, board membership, fees, and coverage can change. Make the database checks again shortly before submission, especially if the AI recommendation is old or your eligibility depends on current coverage. If a record is ambiguous, save its details and ask a librarian to help interpret it instead of relying on a screenshot or an old claim from the journal.
Look for transparent editorial and business practices
Assess whether the journal explains how peer review works, identifies its editors, provides usable contact information, and states all author charges before submission. Check whether it explains copyright and licensing, as well as how it handles corrections, complaints, and research-integrity concerns. These details should be coherent and specific enough to understand what happens to a manuscript and what obligations you accept.
DOAJ’s application guidance describes transparency expectations, including clear disclosure of fees and human oversight for automated processes used by journals. The joint Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing were developed by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME. Use such guidance as a framework for questions; a journal’s presence in a directory or association is not a blanket assurance about every practice or every manuscript.

Reasons to investigate further include promises of unusually fast acceptance, persistent or aggressive solicitation, unclear charges, board members whose identities or affiliations cannot be verified, false indexing claims, and a title that resembles a well-known journal. No single sign should be treated as conclusive without context. The useful question is whether the journal’s claims withstand independent checks and whether its practices are transparent enough for you to make an informed choice.

If the finder returned several plausible candidates, compare them against the manuscript and your actual requirements—not just the finder’s ranking or a single prestige metric. Use the same questions for each journal so that a strong score on one dimension does not conceal a problem on another.

Do not choose on an impact factor or AI match percentage alone. Those measures do not answer whether the paper fits, the journal is currently indexed as required, or the publishing terms are acceptable. In particular, a match percentage should not be read as a prediction of acceptance unless the finder’s own documentation clearly defines and validates that interpretation.

When to ask a person to review the evidence
Ask for a second opinion if you cannot reconcile the journal’s claims with the relevant database, cannot verify editors or fees, see conflicting information, or are uncertain whether the venue meets a career or funder requirement. A subject librarian, scholarly communications librarian, institutional research-integrity office, or trusted senior colleague may be able to check the records with you.
Send them the saved finder result, exact title and ISSN, journal website, the claims you could not verify, and the relevant institutional or funder rule. Ask specifically whether the journal record matches the title, whether the claimed index status is current, and whether the journal appears to meet the requirement. If the decision has significant professional consequences, keep a record of the checks and advice you receive. If the finder vendor offers a correction or feedback route, you can report the recommendation with the journal identifier and supporting records; no particular vendor or reporting process can be assumed.
If you have already submitted or paid
Do not make another commitment until you understand what you accepted. Contact the journal in writing, keep copies of your correspondence and payment records, and review the agreement or terms that applied when you submitted or paid. Ask your institution’s librarian or research-integrity office promptly for advice.
There is no universal withdrawal, refund, or dispute remedy established for every case: the appropriate route depends on the contract, journal, payment method, and jurisdiction. If the journal demands an unexplained penalty or additional money, do not assume the demand is valid; get institution-specific advice before responding with another payment or commitment.
A decision rule before you submit
Submit only when you can identify the exact journal, explain why it fits the manuscript, verify any important indexing requirement in the relevant database, understand its editorial process, and accept its stated fees and publishing terms. The Think. Check. Submit. checklist is a practical final screen: proceed only when you can answer “yes” to most or all of its questions. If a material claim remains unresolved, pause and get help rather than allowing an AI recommendation to settle it for you.
