Treat a no-result or uncertain AI-image-detector response as inconclusive. It means that the particular service did not find a signal it supports or could not classify the file confidently. It does not prove that the image was made by a person, and it does not prove that it was generated by AI. Check the service’s coverage, obtain the best available original, inspect provenance, gather context, and use independent review before making a consequential decision.
What the result actually means
Different services use similar-sounding labels for different observations. Record the exact wording and any score before interpreting it.
“No signal” or “not detected”
This usually means the service found none of the provenance markers, watermarks, or image patterns within its supported scope. OpenAI’s Verify documentation describes the result narrowly: “If no signal is detected, it means the tool did not find supported signals in the uploaded file.” That statement is not a claim that the image is human-made.
A signal may be absent because the file is unsupported, the image predates the provider’s signaling system, or metadata or a watermark was removed or degraded during editing, conversion, screenshotting, compression, or sharing. A service may also be looking only for signals associated with its own provider. For example, OpenAI’s supported checks do not identify images made by every other AI system.

“Inconclusive,” “uncertain,” or a probability
An uncertain label means the model did not reach its confidence threshold. A probability-like value is an estimate under that service’s model and test conditions, not a measured fact about the image’s origin. Google Cloud states that its AI Content Detection API “provides a probabilistic estimate and doesn’t guarantee definitive identification.” Its documentation also warns that false positives and false negatives occur.
Do not turn an uncertain score into an accusation, takedown, disciplinary action, hiring decision, or other penalty. A detector output is one piece of evidence, not a universal authenticity test.
Why a detector can return no result
The service checks only particular signals
Provenance-focused services look for signed Content Credentials, provider-specific manifests, or invisible watermarks. A pixel-analysis service looks for statistical artifacts in the image itself. These approaches answer different questions and cover different generators.

OpenAI Verify checks supported OpenAI-associated C2PA signals and SynthID signals for supported media. The OpenAI Content Provenance API similarly checks signed C2PA metadata in images and embedded SynthID watermarks in images and audio; it is not a general-purpose detector for every AI model.
Google Cloud’s documented AI Content Detection API is a separate, model-based service. It analyzes image artifacts such as noise patterns and spectral anomalies rather than checking C2PA metadata. The documentation lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP input and labels the API Private Preview, so availability and behavior can change.
Microsoft’s Content Provenance Detection API checks supported Microsoft-created C2PA manifests and invisible watermark signals. Its documentation explicitly says that no detected provenance does not mean the media was not AI-generated.

The file no longer contains the original evidence
Metadata and embedded signals can disappear when an image is cropped, resized, exported to another format, passed through a social platform, or captured in a screenshot. Even a genuine credential may not survive an ordinary editing workflow. OpenAI recommends uploading one image at a time and avoiding cropping or format conversion when checking a file.

A service can have restrictions on file type, size, dimensions, or the providers it recognizes. A result from one service says nothing definitive about signals that service does not inspect. A missing C2PA credential, for example, does not tell you whether a SynthID watermark or a pixel-level artifact is present.
A careful response, step by step
- Write down the exact output. Preserve whether the interface said “no signal,” “not detected,” “inconclusive,” or returned a probability. Save the service name, date, file name, and any error message. These labels are not interchangeable.
- Read the service’s scope. Identify whether it checks C2PA credentials, a provider-specific watermark, pixel artifacts, or a combination. Check supported generators, media types, formats, and size limits. Do not assume that a tool advertised as an AI detector covers every image model.
- Locate the original file. Ask the creator, publisher, or source for the earliest available export rather than a social-media download or screenshot. Keep the file unchanged. Do not crop, recompress, convert, or re-save it before the first check.
- Run the relevant check on that original. For an image, upload one file at a time where the service recommends that workflow. Keep a copy of the original and record which version produced each result. A changed result after conversion may reflect lost metadata rather than a changed origin.
- Inspect provenance separately. If Content Credentials are present, examine the issuer, creation information, and edit history with a C2PA-compatible viewer. The free, open-source C2PA Viewer described by the U.S. Office of Research Integrity can inspect Content Credentials, but it does not check SynthID or other watermarks. A viewer is therefore not a universal AI detector.
- Gather surrounding evidence. Ask where and when the image was created, request earlier versions or the source project when appropriate, and compare the publication context with independent records. Visual oddities can prompt questions, but visual inspection alone is not proof.
- Match the response to the stakes. For a low-risk labeling question, mark the image as unverified and seek clarification. For moderation, journalism, employment, education, legal matters, or access to a service, obtain independent review and corroborating evidence. Google Cloud specifically advises against using its output alone for critical decisions.

These tools are complementary rather than interchangeable. A provenance check can show how a file was declared and edited, while a pixel model estimates whether visual patterns resemble generated content. Neither approach establishes a universal accuracy ranking, and the cited official documentation does not provide a cross-tool performance benchmark.

How to read provenance without overclaiming
What a Content Credential can establish
A C2PA credential can record an origin claim, the issuer that signed it, and subsequent edits. A valid chain helps answer “Where did this file come from?” and “What operations were recorded?” Check the issuer and the history rather than treating the presence of a logo or badge as sufficient.
What it cannot establish
Provenance does not prove that the depicted event happened, that a person is represented accurately, or that the image is being used in the correct context. A credential can faithfully document an edited or synthetic image without making its subject true. Conversely, a file without a credential may simply have lost its metadata during ordinary handling.
Why one viewer is not enough
A C2PA viewer examines C2PA records. It does not automatically test every invisible watermark, including provider-specific systems such as SynthID. A “no credential” display therefore means only that the viewer found no inspectable C2PA record in that file.

Decide what to do based on the consequences
Personal or low-stakes use
Label the image as unverified, contact the source, and request the original or creation context. If the question is simply whether to repost it, wait for corroboration rather than presenting a detector score as proof.
Publishing and moderation
Preserve the submitted file, the detector output, and the surrounding post. Ask for source material and check whether the image has appeared earlier in a different context. If a decision is necessary, document that the detector was inconclusive and explain the additional evidence used.
Employment, education, legal, or access decisions
Use a second reviewer and independent evidence. Give the affected person an opportunity to provide the original file or an explanation. A single probabilistic score should not be the sole basis for a consequential judgment.

- Mistake: treating “no signal” as “human-made.” Fix: state only that the service found no signal within its documented coverage.
- Mistake: uploading a screenshot or edited copy first. Fix: obtain and preserve the earliest original available.
- Mistake: assuming every detector checks the same thing. Fix: identify whether the service checks provenance, a watermark, or pixels, and which providers it supports.
- Mistake: combining scores as if they were a shared probability. Fix: keep each service’s output separate; different models and evidence types are not calibrated to one another.
- Mistake: treating a credential as proof of truth. Fix: use provenance to evaluate origin and edits, then verify the depicted claim independently.
- Mistake: making a high-impact decision from one uncertain result. Fix: escalate to independent review and document the limits of the evidence.
