Treat an AI astronomy answer as an unverified lead, not a discovery. Record its exact wording, locate the original observation or paper, check the appropriate official object database or reporting service, look for repeat and independent observations, and label the result as a candidate or confirmed finding only when the evidence supports that status. If later evidence disproves the claim, correct the same channel where it appeared and link the updated evidence.
Start by freezing the claim, not sharing it
AI systems can combine a real astronomical object with the wrong date, confuse a candidate with a confirmed result, or invent a discovery team. Before forwarding the answer, copy the complete output and preserve the prompt, conversation link, or screenshot. Write down the object or phenomenon, the supposed discoverer, the observation date and location, and the precise status language: “candidate,” “possible,” “detected,” or “confirmed.”
Keep the wording in quotation marks while you check it. Do not rewrite “possible new comet” as “new comet” in a post or message. That small change can turn an uncertainty into a false statement that others repeat.

Find the original evidence
An AI response is not primary evidence. A credible claim should lead to at least one of these items:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- An observatory or instrument notice identifying the observation.
- A research paper or preprint with named authors, methods, data and uncertainties.
- An official discovery circular or object record from the service responsible for that class of object.
- A named research team that can point to the underlying measurements.
If the only trail is an AI answer, an unsourced headline or a social-media post, classify the claim as unverified. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) explains that it cannot accept scientific papers as a general review service; authors must use scientific publishers and the reporting channels appropriate to the object. Its discovery guide describes those different routes.
Search for the title, object designation, author names and observation date together. A genuine result may have a provisional designation rather than a memorable name. If you cannot find an original source after checking those identifiers, do not fill the gap with a more confident summary.

| Claim type | Where to check | What the record can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Minor planets and related small bodies | The Minor Planet Center, the specialist service identified by the IAU discovery guide | Whether observations and provisional object information have been submitted through the recognized small-body process |
| Comets and transient events | The specialist reporting service indicated for that object class in the IAU discovery guide | Whether the event has an appropriate report and an identifiable observing record |
| Planetary positions or an alleged close approach | NASA JPL Horizons, which the IAU FAQ identifies for positional information | Calculated positions and geometry for a specified time and observer, rather than proof of a new discovery by itself |
| Galaxy reclassification | A peer-reviewed publication followed by astronomy-community discussion and subsequent database updates | Whether a proposed classification has passed the publication and community-review stages described by the IAU |
Do not infer that a missing entry proves an AI claim is false. A recent candidate may not yet appear in a public database, and a database entry alone does not establish that every interpretation is correct. Use the record as one part of a chain that includes the original data and later observations.

Check whether the signal is real
Rule out imaging and processing artifacts
Ask whether the alleged feature could have been produced by the instrument, calibration, image stacking or software processing. The IAU guide specifically warns about “ghost images” near bright objects. Reflections, detector effects and processing artifacts can look like a second source in a single frame.
For an image-based claim, inspect the individual exposures if they are available. A feature that moves with the camera, changes shape between frames or disappears after a different reduction is not equivalent to a persistent astronomical source.
Repeat on another night
Time-separated observations help distinguish a real object from a transient instrumental effect. The IAU guide asks: “Have you confirmed your observation on a second night and obtained multiple CCD or photographic exposures?” This is guidance for checking an observation, not a universal numerical rule for every discovery. The number and timing of observations depend on the object, its motion and the measurement needed.

Look for a second observatory, instrument or research group that obtained the signal without simply copying the first report. Independent data can test whether the feature appears at the predicted position, follows the expected motion and has a consistent brightness or spectrum. A collection of reposts is not independent confirmation.

Read the paper for status, methods and caveats
When you locate a paper or preprint, check five items before repeating its conclusion:
- Date and publication status: note whether it is a preprint, accepted manuscript or peer-reviewed article.
- Authors and affiliations: verify that the named team actually performed or analyzed the observations.
- Methods: identify the instrument, exposure details, calibration, sample selection and statistical tests.
- Uncertainty: read error bars, confidence intervals and alternative explanations, not just the abstract.
- Conclusion wording: preserve the paper’s terms such as “candidate,” “consistent with” or “tentative” instead of upgrading them to certainty.
Peer review is an important evaluation step, but it is not a guarantee that a result will never change. New measurements can overturn an interpretation while leaving the original paper an honest account of what was known at the time.
Compare competing explanations systematically
If an AI answer and the source material support different explanations, compare them on the same axes instead of choosing the more dramatic story.

Understand why publicity is not acceptance
A press release, viral post or confident AI summary marks a communication event, not a scientific verdict. The IAU’s historical case study, Publicising a Science Discovery: It’s All in the Timing (May 2008), describes how a suspected exoplanet interpretation changed after follow-up observations. The additional data did not support the protoplanet explanation and remained consistent with the possibility that TMR-1C was a background star. That historical example is useful because the initial interpretation was revised as evidence improved; it should not be presented as a current claim about another object.
When reporting a developing result, state both the present status and what could change it: for example, “a candidate reported in a preprint, awaiting independent follow-up.” Do not describe a preliminary interpretation as settled merely because it received publicity.
Use the 3I/ATLAS figure in its proper scope
On 23 February 2026, the IAU reported that its Minor Planet Center had received more than 4,000 observations of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS and that those observations confirmed the object would not come close to Earth. The number belongs to that specific object and that dated announcement. It is not a general threshold—such as “4,000 observations”—for confirming every astronomical discovery. Confirmation depends on what is being measured, the quality and independence of the data, and the question under test.
Recommended Free Tools
When an AI cites a large observation count, ask what the count includes, who collected the observations, over what period and what conclusion the observations actually support. A high count can establish an orbit or rule out a close approach without proving a separate claim about composition, origin or hazard.

Correct the record without overstating the error
If you shared the false claim, update the same post, article, thread or message where practical. A useful correction has four parts:
- Identify the earlier statement and when it was made.
- State the specific evidence that changed the assessment.
- Give the current status, such as “unverified candidate,” “artifact” or “interpretation not supported by follow-up.”
- Link the original source and the correction, erratum or retraction so readers can inspect both.
Use neutral language unless there is evidence of deliberate deception. An incorrect AI summary, a measurement error and scientific misconduct are different claims. Do not accuse a researcher of fraud when the available evidence only shows a mistake or a changed interpretation.
The IAU Code of Conduct says authors are responsible for timely corrections or retractions when errors could mislead. It also states: “Research data and results should be maintained in a form that allows review and reproduction by others.” The current policy page was accessed 13 October 2026. Applying that principle to public communication means preserving the evidence trail and making the update easy to find.

- Capture: save the AI output, prompt context, links and date.
- Extract: list the object, discoverer, observation details and status words exactly as stated.
- Trace: locate the observatory notice, paper, data release, circular or named team.
- Classify: determine whether the claim concerns a minor planet, comet, transient, galaxy, planetary position or another category.
- Check the authority: consult the object-specific service, such as the Minor Planet Center for relevant small bodies, and the source identified by the IAU guide for other categories.
- Test reality: inspect artifact risks, second-night observations, multiple exposures and independent measurements.
- Read caveats: record publication status, uncertainties, alternative explanations and any follow-up.
- Label accurately: use “unverified,” “candidate,” “reported” or “confirmed” only when the evidence warrants it.
- Correct: if the claim fails, update the original channel with the evidence and date of correction.
Common failure modes to avoid
- Treating fluent prose as verification: language quality says nothing about whether an observation exists.
- Using one database for every object: astronomy reporting is object-specific, and galaxy classification follows a different path from small-body reporting.
- Counting duplicates as confirmation: copied posts and automated summaries do not add independent evidence.
- Ignoring negative results: a follow-up observation that fails to reproduce a signal is evidence, not an inconvenience to omit.
- Removing the original without explanation: silent deletion prevents readers from understanding what changed; a dated correction is more transparent.
- Turning a guidebook into proof: a general observing guide can help recognize common objects or possible misidentifications, but official records and original data remain the basis for verification.
What a responsible final explanation looks like
After checking, write a conclusion that matches the evidence: “The AI described a possible new object, but no original observation or official record was found, so the claim remains unverified”; or, “The source paper reports a candidate, and follow-up observations are still pending”; or, “Later data did not support the original interpretation, so the earlier post has been corrected.” This wording gives readers a useful answer without pretending that uncertainty is certainty.
