If your AirPods stop charging, first determine whether the problem is the power source, cable, case, one earbud, the charging contacts, a status-reading delay, or a hardware fault. Put both earbuds in their case and charge the case by cable for at least 15 minutes before trying resets or buying replacements. AirPods Max follow a different five-minute charging instruction. Work through the checks below in order, then obtain an inspection and personalized service estimate if charging still fails.

If your AirPods won’t charge

Start by identifying what is actually failing. Is the case not accepting power, is only one earbud affected, or are both earbuds affected? That distinction prevents you from replacing a working component. Apple’s charging guidance is model- and case-dependent, so identify the AirPods generation and the case connector before buying a cable, adapter, or replacement case.

Identify the charging path

  • AirPods and AirPods Pro: Put both earbuds in the case, close the lid, connect the appropriate Lightning or USB-C cable, and charge for at least 15 minutes.
  • AirPods Max: Use the supplied cable and charge for at least five minutes. The earbud-case procedure does not apply to AirPods Max.
  • Wireless cases: Wireless charging works only with compatible cases. The case model determines whether wireless charging is available and whether the connector is Lightning or USB-C.

These are Apple’s initial instructions on its regional support page: If your AirPods won’t charge. The page is India-region support content, so connector and service details can differ by market.

1. Give the case a known-good wired charge

A depleted case can make both earbuds appear dead. Connect the cable firmly to the case and to a working power adapter, then connect the adapter to a functioning outlet or other reliable power source. Leave AirPods or AirPods Pro charging for at least 15 minutes before judging the result. If the first source produces no response, try a known-working cable, adapter, and outlet one at a time so you know which change made a difference.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For AirPods Max, connect the supplied cable and allow at least five minutes of charging. Do not infer a case or earbud fault from the AirPods procedure when you are using Max.

Check every connection

  1. Push the cable fully into the case charging port.
  2. Check that the other end is fully inserted into the adapter or powered port.
  3. Confirm the adapter is connected to a live outlet or power source.
  4. Repeat the charge with a source that you already know powers another device.

2. Test wireless charging only after the cable check

If your case supports wireless charging, place it on the charger with the status light facing upward. Reposition it if the expected light does not appear. Wireless charging varies by case model; a case that lacks this capability will not respond no matter how it is positioned.

If wireless charging still does not work, connect the case by cable to a power adapter. That comparison separates a wireless-positioning or pad problem from a case battery or charging-circuit problem. Apple describes compatible-case and positioning guidance in its charge-your-AirPods instructions.

3. Read the case and device battery status

After the wired charging period, check whether the reported charge changed. On an iPhone or iPad, open the case near the device, or remove an AirPod, and inspect the AirPods battery status. You can also use Bluetooth settings on the device, the Mac battery interface, or the case’s status light.

Indicator Apple’s meaning What to check next
Green status light The case or earbuds are fully charged. Compare the device battery reading and test the affected earbud.
Amber status light Less than one full charge remains. Continue charging and check whether the percentage rises.
No light The case may need charging. Use a known-good wired source and verify the cable connection.

The status-light location differs on older case designs, so look at the case-specific indicator rather than assuming every model has the light in the same place. Apple’s US-region status explanation is in Charge your AirPods.

Separate a display delay from a charging failure

A supported AirPods model may use optimized charging, which can delay charging to 100 percent to reduce battery wear. AirPods Pro 3 also has an optimized charge limit. If you need a full charge, Apple says that limit can be turned off. These features do not apply to every generation, so do not treat a temporary pause below 100 percent as proof of a failed battery. Check whether the charge is increasing and whether the feature is enabled for your model.

4. Inspect and clean the charging path safely

Dust or compacted debris can prevent the case contacts or port from making a connection. Apple recommends a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for removing debris from the charging port. Use the brush gently around the opening; it is not a tool to force into the port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s explicit warning is: “To avoid damaging the metal contacts, don’t put anything in the charging ports.” Do not insert pins, paper clips, metal picks, cotton swabs, or other objects, and keep liquid out of the ports. If the case became damp, let it dry fully before connecting power. A soft electronics brush is optional; cleaning is not a reason to buy a particular accessory.

Clean the earbud-to-case contacts

  • Remove each earbud and look for visible debris on its charging contact and in the matching case well.
  • Use only a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to loosen surface debris.
  • Do not scrape contacts or add liquid.
  • Return the earbuds to the case, close the lid, and repeat the wired 15-minute charge.

If careful cleaning does not restore charging, Apple recommends service rather than further probing. See How to clean your AirPods for the complete safety instructions.

5. Reset the AirPods with the correct model procedure

A reset can resolve charging or pairing behavior, but it also clears custom settings. You will need to restore those settings afterward. The reset method differs sharply between older generations and the newest cases, so do not apply the older button method to every model.

AirPods 1–3 and AirPods Pro 1–2

  1. Place both earbuds in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. If the AirPods appear in Bluetooth settings, forget or remove them from the device.
  4. With the lid open, press and hold the case setup button for about 15 seconds.
  5. Release it when the status light flashes amber and then white.
  6. Pair the AirPods again and test charging before restoring custom settings.

Apple’s reset page provides the model-specific pairing and reset details at How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro. That page is Latin America regional support content; follow its current on-screen instructions for your exact generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3

These cases use a series of double taps on the front of the case, timed to the status-light behavior, rather than the older rear setup-button sequence. Because the tap cadence and light response are model-specific, use Apple’s complete current procedure instead of guessing the timing. After the reset, pair the AirPods again and check whether the case and each earbud report a changing charge.

What the results tell you

Observation after the checks Most useful interpretation Next action
The case charges by cable and both earbuds gain charge The original source, wireless position, or status reading was the problem. Continue using the reliable charging method and monitor the status.
The case accepts power but one earbud remains unchanged The issue is localized to that earbud’s contact, fit, battery, or charging circuit. Inspect that earbud and its case well, clean safely, then reset.
Neither the cable nor compatible wireless charging produces a status response The case, cable path, adapter, or charging hardware may be faulty. Try one known-good wired setup, then request service if there is still no response.
The percentage pauses below full on a supported model Optimized charging or an optimized charge limit may be active. Check the setting and whether the charge is increasing before calling it a failure.
Behavior changes after the model-specific reset Software, pairing, or stored settings contributed to the symptom. Pair again and restore custom settings selectively.

No single observation proves that replacement is the best option. The decision depends on whether the case accepts wired power, whether one or both earbuds fail, whether the battery status changes after 15 minutes, whether debris is visible, whether the correct reset changes behavior, and what an inspection finds.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service

Seek an inspection when a known-good wired source, safe cleaning, status check, and model-appropriate reset do not restore charging. Apple offers troubleshooting and service or replacement options, but it does not provide one universal repair price for every AirPods model and region.

Get a personalized estimate

Apple says the product must be inspected before it can provide an estimate. The amount depends on the model, the failed component, coverage, location, and whether service is performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Check your warranty and AppleCare status before authorizing paid work. Apple’s service page describes a below-80-percent battery-capacity service benefit under applicable coverage; that is not a universal promise of free repair for every AirPods owner or situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Apple Service and Repair for AirPods to review the available service path and request an estimate. The page includes a specific AirPods 1 Wireless query state, so confirm that the selected model matches your hardware. Region, coverage, and provider can change the options shown.

Repair or replacement: a practical decision framework

  1. Confirm the failed part. Do not replace the entire set when only one earbud or the case is unresponsive.
  2. Compare covered and uncovered service. Apply warranty or AppleCare eligibility before considering an out-of-pocket decision.
  3. Use the inspected estimate. Apple’s pages do not establish a universal price threshold at which replacement is always better.
  4. Account for case compatibility. A replacement case must match the AirPods generation and connector or wireless capability.
  5. Choose based on the actual component cost. Compare the estimate for the failed component with the price of a compatible replacement set available in your region, rather than relying on a generic repair figure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a cable before identifying whether the case uses Lightning or USB-C.
  • Assuming every case supports wireless charging.
  • Calling a charge-limit feature a battery failure when the percentage is still increasing.
  • Pushing metal tools or liquid into the charging port.
  • Using the older setup-button reset on AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3.
  • Quoting or relying on a single repair price without model, region, coverage, and inspection details.
  • Replacing the whole set before checking whether only one earbud or the case is affected.

Quick checklist

  1. Identify whether the case, one earbud, both earbuds, or AirPods Max are affected.
  2. Charge AirPods or AirPods Pro by cable for at least 15 minutes; charge AirPods Max with its supplied cable for at least five minutes.
  3. Verify the cable, adapter, outlet, and case connection with a known-good source.
  4. If compatible, reposition the case on the wireless charger with the status light facing up.
  5. Check the battery screen and status light; green means full, amber means less than one full charge, and no light may mean the case needs charge.
  6. Consider optimized charging or the AirPods Pro 3 charge limit.
  7. Clean only with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush and never insert anything into a charging port.
  8. Reset using the procedure for your generation, remembering that custom settings are cleared.
  9. If charging still fails, obtain an inspection and personalized estimate before choosing service or replacement.
