Start with the least destructive checks: keep the phone powered, confirm a reliable connection, free enough storage for both the downloaded package and its local extraction, restart, and download the update again. Menu names and recovery options vary by Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO model and software version, so identify the exact phone before following a path. Do not factory-reset or reflash as a first response. Back up data before any reset, and contact Xiaomi after-sales support if the phone cannot boot, shows “System Has Been Destroyed,” or remains unusable after an update or flash.
First, identify the phone and the exact failure
Xiaomi publishes model-specific troubleshooting. A Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 14T Pro, REDMI Note 12 Pro+ 5G, and POCO F6 Pro can show similar symptoms but have different menu labels, timing guidance, and escalation instructions. Note the model name, whether it uses MIUI or another Xiaomi software version, the current version number, the wording of any error, and whether the phone still reaches the home screen.
- Update will not download: the process stops before installation, often with a network, storage, battery, or package-integrity problem.
- Update is stuck or fails: downloading or verification does not finish, or the installation aborts.
- Phone is slow or freezes after installation: the system boots, but performance is poor.
- Phone will not boot: it loops, crashes, or displays a severe system message.
Use the branch that matches your symptom. A brief performance slowdown is not handled the same way as a device that cannot start.
What to do when an update will not download or remains stuck
1. Put the phone on power and a stable connection
Keep the battery sufficiently charged or connect the charger before retrying. Use a stable Wi-Fi network; if Wi-Fi is unreliable, Xiaomi’s model-specific guidance also allows trying mobile data. Avoid restarting the router, changing networks, or letting the battery run down in the middle of installation unless the phone is already unresponsive.

2. Check available storage
An update package is downloaded and then extracted on the phone. Xiaomi says that larger updates may require more than twice the package size during this process, and its storage FAQ says some larger updates may need over 15 GB of free space. Xiaomi does not present that figure as a universal minimum for every model or release; the FAQ’s publication year is not displayed.
Remove items you can restore later, such as unused apps, cached files, downloaded videos, and large photos or recordings. Empty the relevant trash or recently deleted folders if they still consume space. Check storage again after cleanup, then retry the update.
3. Check for the update manually
On the REDMI Note 12 Pro+ 5G, Xiaomi’s documented path is Settings → About phone → MIUI version, followed by a manual check. Other Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones may use a different label or location, so do not assume this path is universal. If an update is offered, start a fresh download rather than resuming a visibly damaged package.

4. Restart once, then download the package again
A restart can clear a transient updater process. Xiaomi’s guidance for the REDMI Note 12 Pro+ 5G includes restarting, while the Xiaomi 14T Pro FAQ recommends re-downloading when a package may be incomplete or corrupted. After restarting, return to the model’s update screen and request a new download over the stable connection.
5. Stop repeating the same loop
If storage is adequate, the network is stable, the phone is powered, and a newly downloaded package still fails, repeated retries are unlikely to repair a damaged installation. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 14T Pro guidance directs owners to after-sales inspection at that point. Record the error wording and the steps already tried so support can diagnose the specific model and software build.

Why a Xiaomi phone may be slow or freeze after an update
Immediately after an update, applications may be re-optimized. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 13 FAQ says this can cause temporary lag and recommends allowing one to two weeks for optimization. That timing applies to the Xiaomi 13 guidance only; it is not a blanket waiting period for every Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO device.

During that period, keep the phone charged, install app updates from the phone’s normal app store, and observe whether performance improves. Do not treat repeated crashes, a boot loop, a phone that cannot reach the home screen, or a severe error message as ordinary optimization. Those symptoms require a different troubleshooting path.

If a Xiaomi 13 still lags or freezes after the two-week period described in its FAQ, Xiaomi directs users to submit feedback through Settings → Services & feedback. The exact menu may differ on other models. Include the update version, when the slowdown began, which apps freeze, and whether the issue occurs after a restart.
What to do if the phone says “System Has Been Destroyed”
If the phone displays “System Has Been Destroyed” and cannot reboot into the system, Xiaomi’s FAQ directs the owner to Xiaomi after-sales support. The published guidance does not provide a universal at-home recovery procedure. The safest course is to stop experimenting with random button combinations, unofficial packages, or files intended for another model.

Before contacting support, write down the exact model, region, software version if visible, the update that preceded the failure, and any error text. If the phone can still show a recovery or diagnostic screen, photograph it for the technician. Do not wipe data simply to make the error disappear unless support specifically tells you that the step is appropriate and you have accepted the data consequences.

A factory reset is a later troubleshooting step, not a harmless first response. Xiaomi’s REDMI Note 12 Pro+ 5G guidance places reset after checking power, connection, storage, a manual update check, restart, and a fresh download. Xiaomi’s POCO F6 Pro FAQ also mentions considering a factory reset when OTA verification failures or data inconsistencies persist after an abnormal shutdown.

Back up before resetting
- Confirm that photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, documents, and app-specific data are backed up to a location you can actually access.
- Check that the backup has completed rather than merely being scheduled. Open the cloud or computer copy and verify representative files.
- For the Xiaomi 13 lag guidance, Xiaomi says to back up data and log out of Xiaomi and Google accounts before a reset. Follow the account-removal instructions shown for your exact model.
- Record two-factor recovery codes and any eSIM or banking-app reactivation requirements before erasing the phone.
A reset removes data stored on the device and may require account credentials during setup. If you cannot verify a usable backup, postpone the reset and ask official support about non-destructive options.

What if an update or flash leaves the phone unusable?
Xiaomi’s FAQ for a phone that crashes after flashing says to try flashing again and to seek after-sales service if the device remains inoperable. That is situation- and model-specific advice, not a recommendation for routine home reflashing.
The Mi 10 Pro user manual warns that updating by other means may damage the device or cause data loss or security problems. Its Security Statement says: Please update your phone’s operating system using the built-in software update feature, or visit any of our authorized service outlets.
This is model-specific guidance from Xiaomi’s manual. For ordinary update failures, use the built-in updater or an authorized service channel rather than downloading firmware from an unverified source.

Contact local Xiaomi support or an authorized service outlet when any of these conditions applies:

- A fresh package, sufficient storage, stable power, and a reliable connection do not resolve the update failure.
- The phone remains unusable after a flash or repeated crash.
- You cannot safely complete a backup before a proposed reset.
- You are unsure whether a firmware file matches the exact model, region, or software build.
Support routes and repair availability depend on country. Xiaomi’s Global Support pages include after-sales channels and a self-repair service, but those pages establish help routes rather than a universal repair procedure. Use the local channel for the country where the phone was purchased or is being serviced.
How to reduce the chance of another failed update
- Keep a reasonable amount of free internal storage instead of waiting for the update screen to report a shortage.
- Install updates while connected to reliable power and a stable network.
- Do not force a shutdown while verification or installation is in progress.
- Maintain current backups so a reset or service visit does not become a data-loss event.
- Keep the model name and software version available before searching for instructions; Xiaomi’s menu paths and recovery steps are not interchangeable across devices.
The practical decision is simple: perform the low-risk checks once, protect your data, and escalate severe or persistent failures to official support rather than turning an update problem into a firmware or security problem.
