When a website or app will not load, first find out whether the failure is limited to one service, one browser or app, one device, or the internet connection. Test another site, browser, device, or network before changing settings. Then work from reversible checks—address, reload, connectivity, restart and updates—to targeted Chrome, Android, Wi-Fi or support steps.
Start by identifying what is actually failing
The scope of the failure is your most useful diagnostic clue. If only one website or app is affected while other services work, investigate that service or the way your browser or app interacts with it. If several unrelated websites and apps fail, investigate the connection or network first. Google Chrome Help summarizes the distinction this way: “If the issue affects multiple websites, check your internet connection.”
| What you observe | Most useful direction |
|---|---|
| One website fails, other sites load | Check the address, try another browser, test another network, and consider a site-side problem. |
| Several websites fail in one browser | Compare another browser, then check extensions, stored site data, browser updates and memory. |
| Several apps and websites fail on one device | Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, restart the device, and compare another device or network. |
| Devices on the same Wi-Fi fail | Inspect the router connection, Wi-Fi range, public-network sign-in or ISP service. |
| Only one device fails while others work | Focus on that device, its browser or app, and its network settings or administrator policies. |
Record the symptoms before changing anything
Write down the device model, operating system, browser or app name, network in use, affected address or service, and the complete error text. Note whether the problem happens every time or only intermittently. This information lets a site owner, internet provider, public Wi-Fi host or workplace administrator reproduce the problem.

Run the low-risk checks first
- Verify the address. Recheck the spelling, domain ending and any unusual characters in the URL. A wrong hostname can produce a failure that looks like an outage.
- Reload once. A temporary server delay, interrupted connection or incomplete page can clear on a fresh request. Avoid repeatedly submitting a payment or form while testing.
- Confirm connectivity. Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is enabled and that the device shows a connection. On a computer, an Ethernet connection can be a useful optional comparison if the device and router support it; it is a test, not a required purchase.
- Complete a public Wi-Fi sign-in. Hotels, libraries, airports and cafés may connect you to Wi-Fi but still require a browser portal before allowing ordinary internet access. Open a new page and follow the network’s sign-in prompt.
- Restart the browser or app. Close it fully, reopen it and retry. For an app, use the normal app switcher or close command rather than repeatedly tapping a frozen screen.
- Restart the device. This can clear a stalled network session, temporary browser process or memory pressure without deleting data.
- Update the browser or app. Google’s Chrome guidance specifically recommends checking that Chrome is current. Apply updates from the platform’s normal update mechanism, then retry.
If a browser is crashing, slow or showing a blank page, close excess tabs and other apps and pause large downloads. Google’s support guidance treats available memory as a practical cause of crashes and loading failures, but it does not establish a universal memory threshold.
Use comparisons to isolate the cause
Try another website
Open two or three unrelated, familiar sites. If they load while the original page does not, the problem may be limited to that site, its address or its stored browser state. If none load, move your attention to the connection.
Try another browser
Open the same address in a different installed browser. If it works there, the first browser’s extensions, cookies, cache, settings or version are more likely involved. If it fails in every browser, a site or network issue becomes more plausible.

On an Android phone or tablet, turn Wi-Fi off and test the page or app over mobile data. Then turn Wi-Fi back on and compare the reverse. A page that works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi points toward the Wi-Fi network, router, portal or internet provider. A failure on both networks points toward the service, device or app.

Compare another device
Test the same service on another device using the same network. If both devices fail on that network, investigate the network or service. If only one device fails, concentrate on its browser, app, operating system, clock, security software or administrator settings.
When Chrome is the likely source
Test in Incognito
Open the affected address in a Chrome Incognito window. Incognito gives you a comparison with fewer existing browsing-state and extension interactions. If the page loads there, an extension or stored site data in the regular profile is a strong suspect.
Disable extensions one at a time
Turn off extensions individually rather than disabling everything permanently. After each change, reload the page. When the failure disappears, the last extension changed is a likely trigger; update, reconfigure or remove it, then retest. Do not install an extension merely because a page suggests one.

Clear browsing data only after simpler tests
Chrome can clear history, cookies and cached files, but this is more disruptive than a reload or Incognito test. Cookies and site data may sign you out, remove saved preferences or reset a site’s local state. Record any information you need before clearing it, and remove data for the affected site first when Chrome offers that narrower option.

Reset Chrome settings as a last browser step
A settings reset can undo unwanted changes, but it should follow comparisons, extension checks and selective data clearing. Review what the reset changes before confirming it. A reset will not repair a failing website or an offline network, so do not use it as a substitute for scope testing.
Consider security, proxy and managed-device controls
Chrome’s error guidance lists VPNs, firewalls and security software among possible causes of a reset connection. Change one control at a time and follow your organization’s policy; do not permanently disable protection just to make a page load. On a work-managed computer, proxy and certificate settings may be intentional. Ask the administrator to inspect them. Google warns that installing a certificate yourself can create a security risk.
When an Android app or device will not load content
- Confirm whether the failure affects one app or several apps and websites.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the Android device.
- Check mobile-data and Wi-Fi indicators and run the Wi-Fi/mobile-data comparison.
- Try the service in a browser. If the browser works but the app does not, the app or its stored session is the narrower suspect; use the app publisher’s supported update or account-recovery path.
- Close other apps and browser tabs if the device is short on available memory or the app is crashing.
Do not assume that an app failure proves the internet is down. A single app can have a service outage, an expired session or a compatibility problem while other services remain available.
Check home Wi-Fi without replacing equipment
Confirm signal and range
Move closer to the existing router and retry. A weak or unstable signal can make pages time out even when the device still displays a Wi-Fi icon. Check whether another device near the router has the same problem.

Restart the router safely
If several devices are affected, restart the router according to its manual. Android Help describes unplugging the router, waiting, and reconnecting it; use the timing and indicator instructions supplied for your equipment. Wait until its connection indicators settle before testing again.
Do not buy a replacement as the default fix
The official guidance supports checking the existing connection and equipment. It does not establish that a new router, extender or paid repair utility will solve this broad class of loading failures.
Read the error message as a clue
Error text narrows the possibilities, but it is not a diagnosis by itself. Save the exact wording when you contact support.
| Chrome message | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED |
Chrome could not resolve the hostname, or the hostname has a different IP address. | Check spelling and test whether other sites work. Avoid changing advanced DNS settings without evidence that DNS is the problem. |
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED |
The device is not connected to the internet. | Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and the connection status; complete any public Wi-Fi portal sign-in. |
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT |
The connection took too long. A slow network or busy page is possible. | Retry once, then compare unrelated sites and another network. |
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET |
Something interrupted the connection. | Consider an unstable connection, outdated browser, VPN or blocking security software, but do not assume one cause from this message alone. |
| Certificate or date warning | The device clock, site certificate, network interception or public Wi-Fi portal may be involved. | Check the date and time, complete portal sign-in, and ask a work-device administrator about proxy or certificate configuration. |
| Redirect loop | Chrome says cookies may not be working correctly. | Delete cookies for the affected site only if needed, understanding that this can sign you out and remove saved site state. |
| “Aw, Snap!” | The page or tab crashed, often in connection with memory, extensions or browser state. | Close extra tabs and apps, restart Chrome and the device, then test Incognito and extensions. |
| “This webpage is not available” | A general loading failure whose cause depends on the accompanying code and scope. | Capture the code, compare sites and networks, and follow the matching branch above. |
Escalate to the right organization
Contact the website owner
Use the site’s official support channel when one website continues failing across browsers and networks while other services work. Provide the URL, time of the failure, device and browser, exact error and the comparisons you performed. Never send a password or one-time code.

Contact your internet provider
For persistent home-network trouble affecting multiple devices and services after checking Wi-Fi and restarting the router, contact the ISP. Include whether Ethernet, Wi-Fi or mobile data changes the result.
Contact a mobile provider
Persistent failures on mobile data—especially across several apps and websites—belong with the mobile provider after you have restarted the device and confirmed that mobile data is enabled.
Contact the public-network host
If a hotel, café, school or library network will not pass traffic after its portal sign-in, ask the venue’s network host. Do not attempt to bypass its access controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Contact a workplace or school administrator
Managed devices may use required proxies, certificates, VPNs or security software. Ask the administrator to check those controls rather than installing certificates or disabling protection yourself.
A compact decision path
- Capture the exact error and identify whether one or many services fail.
- Verify the address, reload, check connectivity and complete any portal sign-in.
- Restart the browser or app and device; close excess tabs and apps.
- Compare another site, browser, device and—on Android—Wi-Fi versus mobile data.
- If only Chrome fails, test Incognito, disable extensions individually, then consider selective browsing-data clearing.
- If multiple devices fail on one Wi-Fi network, check range and restart the router according to its manual.
- Escalate to the site owner, ISP, mobile provider, public-network host or device administrator according to the failing scope.
This order preserves the most information while minimizing disruptive changes. It also gives the eventual support contact a clear record of what was tested.
