If a virtual try-on kiosk makes a garment look too tight, too loose, or the wrong color, treat the screen as a visual preview—not a measurement or a promise of what you will receive. Use the kiosk’s visible restart control once, then verify the item against its physical tag, size chart, measurements, fit notes and product description. Ask a store associate to check the garment or the kiosk when the result still looks wrong. Do not change camera, lighting, network or system settings yourself.
What the kiosk image can—and cannot—tell you
Virtual try-on systems create or composite an image of a garment with model imagery. Google’s merchant documentation describes apparel previews built from garment and model source images, so the person on screen is a rendered representation rather than a camera-based fitting measurement. The result can be useful for a broad style impression, such as whether a jacket’s general silhouette or a dress’s pattern placement appeals to you. It cannot reliably establish how the actual item will sit on your body. ASOS says its Virtual Try-On is for general guidance and may not show your exact body shape, proportions, colour or size; Google Shopping similarly says a generated image does not determine or guarantee the garment’s actual fit. Retail kiosks make their own claims. For example, VENTA describes its mirror as a visual discovery and styling experience and explicitly says it does not provide body measurement or a fit guarantee. That distinction matters: a kiosk can be working as designed while still showing an unrepresentative fit.
First response: reset once, then stop guessing
- Use the kiosk’s visible restart or Try again control. A single reset can clear a temporary rendering or selection error. Use only controls presented to shoppers on the screen.
- Check whether the correct item is selected. Compare the displayed product name, colourway, pattern and item number with the garment tag or shelf label. A wrong product record can look like a fit or colour problem.
- Compare with physical evidence. Open the retailer’s size chart, measurements, fit notes and product details. If the item is in stock, ask an associate to bring it for a physical fitting.
- Escalate persistent problems. If the screen freezes, the camera is blocked or the same distorted result returns, stop cycling through previews and tell staff what happened.
Do not repeatedly restart in the hope that a random result becomes accurate. A changed rendering is not evidence that one version is the true fit.
When the displayed fit looks wrong
Use measurements, not the silhouette
For a size decision, prioritize the retailer’s garment measurements and size chart. Check the measurement definitions (for example, chest, waist, hip, inseam or garment length), the units, and whether the chart describes body measurements or the finished garment. Fit notes such as “slim,” “regular,” “relaxed,” “oversized,” stretch content and model-size information add context, but none turns the kiosk image into a body scan.

Google Shopping advises checking size charts, reviews and product details alongside the generated image. Reviews can reveal whether other shoppers found an item unusually narrow, long or short, but they remain individual experiences. Use them as supporting evidence rather than a substitute for the retailer’s measurements.
Ask for a physical fitting when possible
A fitting-room try-on lets you check movement, pressure points, sleeve or hem length, ease across the shoulders and how the fabric behaves in ordinary store lighting. Bring the exact colour and size shown on the tag; a nearby item can have a different cut or fabric. If the kiosk suggests a size that conflicts with the chart or the physical garment, trust the measurable and physical evidence.
Recognize common visual distortions
- Body proportions: The generated person may have a different torso-to-leg ratio, shoulder width or posture than you.
- Pose and drape: A raised arm, straight stance or smoothed fabric can hide pulling, bunching or looseness.
- Layering: The preview may not represent the thickness of clothes you will wear underneath.
- Stretch and structure: A rendered surface cannot show how knit fabric stretches, how denim relaxes or how tailoring holds its shape.
- Perspective: Camera angle and image composition can make hems, sleeves or proportions appear longer or shorter.
These are reasons to verify the item, not proof that a particular kiosk has a known error rate. No authoritative source establishes one universal accuracy percentage for virtual try-on kiosks.
When the displayed color looks wrong
Confirm the selected colourway
Read the colour name or code on the kiosk and compare it with the garment tag, product page and shelf label. Similar names—such as “stone,” “sand” and “beige”—can refer to distinct colourways. Patterns, limited editions and regional catalogues may also have separate product records.

Inspect the physical garment under normal store lighting
Look at the item directly rather than judging it only beside the bright kiosk display. Move it under the store’s ordinary lighting and compare it with the product description or swatch if one is provided. Screens can differ in brightness and colour rendering, while cameras and displays apply their own image processing. The available guidance establishes that the preview is a visual aid; it does not establish one universal colour-calibration fix for every kiosk.
Ask staff to verify the inventory record
Tell an associate that the preview and the garment do not match, and show the selected item on screen. Staff can check whether the kiosk is linked to the correct stock-keeping record or colourway. If the physical tag and product description agree with each other but the screen is different, use the physical item as the buying reference until the kiosk is checked.
How to report a kiosk malfunction
Describe the symptom precisely
Give staff the kiosk location or number, the item identifier, the selected size and colour, and what you observed. Useful descriptions include “the camera shows a black screen,” “the preview freezes after selecting size medium,” “the garment is listed as blue but the selected tag is green,” or “the body is visibly stretched.” A precise report helps staff reproduce the fault.
Leave device checks to the operator
Smart-mirror troubleshooting guidance commonly covers network connectivity, camera access, software status and restarting the managed application. For example, the piiq Digital troubleshooting guide directs operators toward those checks and support escalation. Those are operator-side procedures, not instructions for shoppers to open settings, alter permissions, unplug equipment or change lighting.

If staff cannot correct the issue promptly, ask whether another kiosk or a conventional fitting room is available. Do not enter personal credentials or connect your phone to an unfamiliar kiosk merely to bypass a fault.
Choose between two sizes or colors safely
When you are comparing options, use the following evidence hierarchy. It prevents an attractive but inaccurate rendering from outweighing information that directly describes the item.

What to say to a store associate
A short, specific request is more useful than saying only that the image “looks weird.” Try: “The kiosk selected item 123 in navy, but the tag says item 123 in charcoal. Can you confirm the colourway?” For fit: “The preview shows a close fit, but the chart gives a larger chest measurement. Could I see the garment in both sizes or use a fitting room?” For a technical fault: “The camera is blocked and the screen has frozen twice after I selected this item. Could someone check the kiosk or move me to another one?”

Ask the associate to confirm which evidence governs the purchase decision: the physical tag, the product page, or a corrected catalogue entry. If those sources conflict, postpone the purchase until the retailer resolves the discrepancy or provides a clear return option.

Privacy and image capture
A kiosk may use a camera or an image you provide, but retention and deletion practices vary by retailer, kiosk supplier and jurisdiction. You cannot infer from the try-on feature alone whether a captured image is stored, for how long, or whether it is used for another purpose.
- Read the privacy notice displayed on the kiosk before starting image capture.
- Look for information about processing, retention, deletion, sharing and contact details for privacy questions.
- Ask staff or the retailer’s privacy contact when the notice is missing or unclear.
- Do not upload a personal photo or scan your face if you are uncomfortable with the stated practices; request a non-camera shopping or fitting option.
The virtual.fit help resources illustrate that image-based services can have their own support and handling rules. That does not make their practices universal to an in-store kiosk, so rely on the notice for the specific device you are using.
Situations that need extra caution
The kiosk shows a dramatically different body shape
Stop treating the image as a fit recommendation. Verify the item’s measurements and ask for a physical fitting. A generated body that is narrower, taller or differently proportioned can make the garment appear to fit when it will not.
The image changes colour between screens
Use the physical garment, tag and product description as the deciding evidence. Report the discrepancy so staff can check the display and catalogue record, but do not assume that the brightest or newest-looking image is correct.
The kiosk asks for information unrelated to trying on clothing
Pause and ask staff why the information is needed. Avoid entering payment details, account passwords or unnecessary identity data into a try-on interface. Use the retailer’s published privacy contact for unresolved concerns.
The item is unavailable for a physical fitting
Use the size chart, finished-garment measurements, fit notes and product details, and ask whether staff can check another location or a return policy. Record the exact colourway and item number so an online or later purchase refers to the same product record. Keep the kiosk preview in the “style reference” category, not the “proof of fit” category.
A practical decision checklist
- Did you restart the preview once using the visible control?
- Did you verify the item number, size and colourway against the physical tag?
- Did you check the retailer’s chart, measurements, fit notes and product details?
- Did you inspect the garment under normal store lighting?
- Did you request a physical fitting or another kiosk when available?
- Did you report a frozen screen, blocked camera, wrong listing or repeated distortion?
- Did you read the kiosk privacy notice before providing an image?
The safest outcome is straightforward: use the virtual preview to explore a style, then make the size and colour decision from the garment, measurements and retailer information. When the device itself appears faulty, let store staff or the system operator diagnose it rather than changing settings on a managed kiosk.
