Back up the drive immediately to a separate physical device, then plan to replace it if the warning persists or a diagnostic judges it bad. A SMART warning or bad-sector report is a data-risk signal, not a reliable countdown to failure. If the drive is grinding, clicking, or otherwise making abnormal mechanical noise, shut it down instead of continuing scans or copy attempts; continued operation can make recovery harder or impossible.
What to do first
- Stop treating the drive as trusted storage. Do not save new files to it, install software on it, or make it the only location for anything important.
- Identify the data that matters. Prioritize irreplaceable photos, documents, databases, credentials, project files and anything without another copy.
- Copy the important data to a separate physical device. A second internal drive, external hard drive or SSD is appropriate; a second partition on the same physical disk is not an independent backup. Seagate says a SMART error warrants backing up as soon as possible, and Western Digital likewise recommends backing up to another device. Seagate’s SMART guidance and Western Digital’s guidance explain this priority.
- Watch and listen while copying. If the drive begins grinding, repeatedly clicks, drops offline, becomes unusually hot or causes the computer to stall, stop the operation and power it down.
- Only after the data is safe, run the drive maker’s diagnostic. Use the manufacturer’s support material and tool for that exact model. A third-party utility can be useful for observation, but its labels and raw values may not match the manufacturer’s definitions.
If the drive has already failed to mount or ordinary copying repeatedly errors, avoid experimenting with repair utilities. For valuable data, preserve the drive in its current state and consider a professional recovery service rather than repeated scans.
What a SMART warning actually tells you
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) records internal health indicators and can raise an alert when the drive predicts that a diagnostic test will soon fail. Seagate’s support wording is precise: “A S.M.A.R.T. error is a prediction that the diagnostic test will soon fail.” That statement is a warning about predicted test failure, not a date on a calendar.

The alert does not establish how many hours, days or writes remain. Seagate says a drive can continue to appear to work normally after an error and that even some diagnostic tests may pass. Its interpretation guidance also says there is no way to specifically predict when failure will happen. Treat the alert as “reduce exposure and copy the data now,” not as permission to keep using the disk until a supposed deadline. Seagate’s interpretation guidance describes these limits.

SMART attributes and thresholds are vendor- and model-dependent. Western Digital notes that each manufacturer defines its attributes and thresholds. A raw number shown by a monitoring program therefore cannot be assigned one universal meaning across every hard-drive model. Prefer the documentation and diagnostic supplied for the drive’s manufacturer and model. Western Digital’s SMART article provides that qualification.
How to read common bad-sector and SMART signals
| Signal | What it can mean | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| SMART error or failed health status | The drive’s monitoring system predicts that a diagnostic test will soon fail; it is not an exact failure date. | Back up promptly, avoid making the drive the sole copy of data, and prepare a replacement. |
| Current pending sector count | Western Digital describes this as unstable sectors waiting to be remapped after unrecoverable read errors. Exact thresholds and interpretation depend on the model and vendor. | Protect the data first. Do not assume a single displayed value is a universal pass/fail limit. |
| Bad-sector report from a scan | Some sectors could not be read reliably. Identifying or remapping them can involve data that cannot be recovered. | Back up before any write, remap or destructive scan. Lenovo’s diagnostic guide gives this warning. Read the guide. |
| Diagnostic passes after a SMART warning | A passing test does not erase the earlier warning; Seagate says some tests may pass even after a SMART error. | Keep the backup, treat the warning as unresolved, and rely on a replacement for important storage. |
| Grinding or severe mechanical noise | A possible physical or mechanical fault in the drive. | Power down. Seagate warns that continued operation can make recovery attempts more difficult or impossible. See Seagate’s troubleshooting guidance. |
How to copy data without making the situation worse
When the drive is accessible and quiet
- Connect a destination with enough free capacity for the files you need. It must be a different physical device from the suspect disk.
- Start with irreplaceable folders rather than attempting a complete clone immediately. Copy in manageable groups so one unreadable file does not obscure everything else.
- Use the operating system’s normal file copy operation. If a file repeatedly fails, record its name and continue with other high-value files if the system remains stable.
- Keep the suspect drive cool and avoid other workloads during the copy. Do not run a full write test, format, defragmentation or “repair” operation while the only copy is still on the disk.
- Open several copied files from the destination and verify that the most important material is usable. A copy that finishes is not automatically a verified backup.
If ordinary copying causes repeated disconnects, long hangs or escalating noise, stop rather than repeatedly retrying the same operation. Repeated reads add activity to a failing mechanism and may reduce the chance of later recovery.

When the drive is grinding, clicking or not mounting
Shut the computer down and disconnect power to the drive. Do not open the drive enclosure, swap internal parts, repeatedly power-cycle it, or run surface scans. Seagate specifically advises powering down a grinding drive because continued use can make recovery more difficult or impossible. If the files have substantial personal, legal or business value, seek a qualified professional recovery service and explain the symptoms before authorizing work. Keep the original drive unchanged until you have decided on recovery.
Why a passing test is not a clean bill of health
Manufacturers implement SMART attributes differently, and third-party programs may display values that do not reflect how a particular manufacturer uses those attributes. Seagate advises using its own interpretation and diagnostic information for its drives; the same principle applies to other manufacturers. A test result is one observation, while the earlier warning, read errors and sector instability are additional evidence.

Do not use a passing result to justify deleting the backup or returning the disk to critical service. If a manufacturer’s diagnostic labels the drive as failed or bad, replace it. Western Digital says a drive that fails SMART should be backed up and replaced, and Seagate’s troubleshooting material directs replacement when its diagnostic process fails to function properly. Western Digital’s guidance and Seagate’s troubleshooting guidance describe those actions.
What not to do before the backup
- Do not format the drive. Formatting removes directory information or overwrites areas you may still need to recover.
- Do not run a full write or destructive surface scan. A write test can overwrite sectors containing recoverable data.
- Do not force sector remapping while the data is unprotected. Lenovo warns that identifying and remapping bad sectors can involve irretrievable data. Lenovo’s diagnostic guide documents the risk.
- Do not assume a cleanup or optimization program can fix physical media. Software may report symptoms, but it cannot restore a damaged recording surface or failing mechanics.
- Do not keep rebooting a noisy drive to see whether it recovers. Power cycles and additional scans can worsen a mechanical failure.
After the data is copied: diagnose and decide
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic
Record the exact model, serial number, reported attribute, test name and result. Use the drive maker’s current support page for the tool and interpretation. Manufacturer-specific thresholds matter, so do not translate a value from one brand’s utility into another brand’s pass/fail rule.

Keep the original SMART warning in your notes even if the subsequent test passes. If the manufacturer reports a failure, or warnings and read errors persist, retire the drive from important storage. A drive may be suitable only for a temporary, disposable experiment if you knowingly accept total loss; it should not hold the only copy of anything you care about.

| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Capacity | The destination must hold the data being copied, with practical free space for future files. |
| Connection | Match the available interface and enclosure or adapter: for example, the computer’s external connector or the internal drive interface supported by the system. |
| Form factor | For an internal replacement, confirm the physical size and mounting arrangement required by the computer or enclosure. |
| Independence | A backup must be on a separate physical device, not merely another partition on the suspect disk. |
The available guidance does not establish a universally best brand or model, and no product testing supports a particular recommendation here. Capacity and compatibility should drive the choice.

Windows storage warnings and hard drives
Windows has a “critical warning for a storage device” feature for supported NVMe SSDs. Microsoft says that feature does not monitor SATA SSDs or hard disk drives. If the supported warning appears, Microsoft recommends backing up the data. Conversely, the absence of a Windows notification does not demonstrate that a hard drive is healthy. Microsoft’s support article explains the scope and backup advice.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek recovery help
Stop ordinary troubleshooting when the drive makes grinding or repeated clicking sounds, will not stay connected, prevents the computer from completing basic reads, or contains data that cannot be recreated. Power it down in the noisy case and avoid repair or remap scans. A professional recovery service may be appropriate for valuable data, but service availability, pricing and outcomes vary by location and failure type; ask what procedures they will perform before sending the drive.
If the drive is quiet, mounts reliably and the files have been copied and verified, manufacturer diagnostics can help document the failure. Do not return a warned or failed drive to the role of primary storage simply because it still boots or passes one test.
Quick Recap
A simple decision checklist
- Important data present? Copy it to a separate physical device now.
- Grinding or severe clicking? Power down and consider professional recovery.
- Copying fails or the drive disconnects? Stop repeated attempts; protect the original and reassess recovery options.
- SMART warning but normal operation? Back up, then use the manufacturer’s diagnostic; do not rely on a passing result to clear the warning.
- Manufacturer says the drive failed? Replace it and do not entrust it with important data.
