Before replacing the power bank, check that your laptop accepts charging through USB-C, that you are using its charging-capable port, and that the bank’s USB-C Power Delivery output and cable meet the laptop’s model-specific requirements. Then connect the bank directly to the laptop and test the setup with a known-good cable and power source.
Why won’t my power bank charge my laptop?
A USB-C plug fitting into a port does not mean the laptop accepts power through that port. Some USB-C ports support data or display functions but are not charging inputs. Check the exact laptop model’s specifications or manufacturer support page, then use the port identified for charging. Microsoft lists using a non-charging port among the causes of USB-C charging problems.
The power bank, laptop, and cable also need to work together at the power level the laptop requires. USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) supports higher-power charging, but a USB-C power bank is not automatically suitable for every laptop. Microsoft says the PC, charger, and cable must support the power levels the PC needs.

Work through these checks in order
1. Confirm USB-C charging and find the right port
- Look up the laptop’s exact model on its manufacturer’s specification or support page.
- Confirm that the model supports charging through USB-C; do not infer charging support from the connector shape alone.
- Identify the port intended for charging. If the laptop has several USB-C ports, they may not have the same functions.
If the laptop does not accept charging over USB-C, a USB-C power bank will not charge it through that port. If the laptop has another charging input, such as a manufacturer-specific connector, its supplied adapter and that input can provide a useful baseline for diagnosis.
2. Check the power bank’s USB-C output
- Read the bank’s label or specifications for the exact USB-C port you are using.
- Check whether that port supports USB-PD if the laptop requires it.
- Compare the port’s output capability with the charging requirement listed for your laptop model.
- If the bank has multiple outputs, check what the port provides in your intended configuration. A total wattage printed for the bank does not necessarily describe the output available from one port in every configuration.
Do not treat a single wattage as a universal laptop-charging requirement. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop guidance, for example, lists a 39W minimum and 60W recommended for fast charging for some named models; it lists 45W minimum and 60W recommended for fast charging for others. The Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Laptop 4 entries list 60W minimum. These figures apply to the models in Microsoft’s Surface Laptop power-supply requirements table, not to all laptops.
USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as enabling higher-power charging applications. Its standards context does not establish whether a specific power bank will meet your laptop’s requirement: check both manufacturers’ specifications for your actual devices. See USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery overview.

3. Test with a suitable cable
The cable can be the weak link even when its connectors fit. Apple warns: “Some USB-C cables only support data transfer and won’t charge your Mac.” Microsoft also identifies an insufficiently rated cable as a possible cause of slow charging or failure.
- Use a USB-C cable explicitly rated for charging at the power your laptop needs.
- Try a known-good cable from a comparable laptop-charging setup, if available.
- Check for damage. Apple advises stopping use of a cable that works only when it is moved or wiggled.
Apple’s statement appears in If your USB-C power adapter isn’t charging your Mac laptop. Cable capability and charging requirements vary, so confirm the rating rather than relying on the connector type alone.

4. Remove hubs and inspect the connection
- Temporarily disconnect any hub or dock.
- Connect the bank directly to the laptop’s documented charging port.
- Make sure the plug seats properly and inspect the port for visible dirt or damage.
Microsoft lists hubs or docks, dirt in a port, an underpowered charger, the wrong port, and cable power limits among possible causes. Follow the laptop maker’s cleaning instructions; do not insert objects into the port.
5. Read the charging status before judging the bank
On Windows, a slow-charger notification or a battery that continues to drain while plugged in can indicate an incompatible or underpowered source, use of a non-charging port, or a cable that does not meet the laptop’s requirements. Microsoft recommends using the supplied charger and cable as a baseline and connecting directly to the charging port. If the laptop is charging slowly, charging while it is asleep or off may help when the source cannot keep up during normal use.
On supported Macs, Apple says a “Slow Charger” status means the delivered wattage is too low for that model. Do not confuse that warning with “Charging On Hold” or a charge limit: Apple describes those as separate battery-management states. Check the displayed message and Apple’s guidance on USB-C charging problems on Mac laptops before concluding the bank is defective.
6. Compare with another source or device
Change one component at a time, if possible. Try the laptop with its supplied charger and cable, or try the power bank with another device that supports USB-C PD. These comparisons help narrow down the cause, but they are diagnostic clues rather than proof on their own.
- If changing the cable changes the result, the original cable may be damaged or unsuitable.
- If the laptop charges with its supplied adapter but not with the bank, investigate the bank’s USB-PD compatibility and per-port output against the laptop’s requirement.
- If the laptop still will not charge from a known-good compatible source and cable, contact the laptop maker’s support or service team.
Why is my laptop charging slowly or losing battery on a power bank?
Slow charging or continued battery drain does not identify a single fault. The source may not deliver enough power for the laptop, the cable may not support the required power level, or the connection may be through a port that does not charge the laptop. The computer may also use more power while running than the source can supply, which is why Microsoft suggests charging while asleep or off for faster charging.

Start with the laptop maker’s model-specific charging guidance, then compare it with the output specification for the bank’s exact port and the cable’s rating. If a Mac reports “Slow Charger,” Apple says delivered wattage is too low for that model; if it reports “Charging On Hold” or a charge limit, those are different states and should be interpreted separately.

What wattage power bank do I need?
Use the laptop maker’s specification for the exact model; there is no single wattage that covers every laptop. For context, Microsoft’s current Surface Laptop table lists these examples:
| Surface model guidance | Minimum power | Recommended for fast charging |
|---|---|---|
| Some Surface Laptop models listed by Microsoft | 39W | 60W |
| Other Surface Laptop models listed by Microsoft | 45W | 60W |
| Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Laptop 4 | 60W | Not stated for these entries |
These are Microsoft’s figures for the named Surface models, not a general rule for laptops. Confirm your own model’s required input, USB-PD compatibility, the output of the bank’s specific USB-C port, and the cable rating before buying a replacement. A bank’s advertised total output may not be the amount one port supplies in every multiport configuration.
How to compare a power bank with another charging option
When deciding whether to keep troubleshooting the bank or use a different source, compare the full charging path rather than just the number on the power bank’s packaging:
- Laptop support: Does this exact model accept USB-C charging, and which port is the charging input?
- Power source: Does the bank’s particular USB-C port support the required USB-PD operation and provide the laptop’s specified power?
- Cable: Is it rated for charging at the power the laptop needs, and is it in good condition?
- Use conditions: Does the laptop charge when asleep or off, even if the battery drains or charges slowly while the computer is in use?
- Manufacturer guidance: What does the laptop maker specify as the minimum input or recommended power for the exact model?
If the laptop supports a separate charging connector, its supplied adapter is often a more useful comparison than immediately purchasing another bank. It can help show whether the issue is specific to the bank-and-USB-C setup or persists with a known-good compatible source. No one wattage, cable, or bank can be recommended for every laptop without its model specifications.

When should you replace the power bank?
Consider a different power source only after confirming that the laptop supports USB-C charging and that you are using the correct port. If a known-good, properly rated cable and direct connection do not help, compare the bank’s USB-PD support and per-port output with the laptop maker’s requirement. The supplied laptop adapter is a practical comparison when available.
If the laptop charges properly from a known-good compatible source but not from the bank, the bank’s output compatibility or available power is a more likely issue than a general laptop charging failure. If it will not charge from a known-good compatible source and cable either, use the laptop maker’s support or service route rather than assuming a new power bank will fix it.
If you do decide to buy a replacement, use the laptop’s specification as the starting point: verify USB-C charging support, the needed USB-PD capability and power at the port you plan to use, and the cable rating. A “65W” search or product label is relevant only if that power level suits your laptop; it is not a universal recommendation. The available guidance does not verify any particular power bank model or its output when multiple ports are used, so check the maker’s specifications rather than relying on a headline total.

Can a USB-C power bank charge a laptop?
Yes, if the laptop supports charging through USB-C and the bank’s USB-C port provides compatible USB Power Delivery output at the power the laptop requires. Use the laptop maker’s model-specific guidance and a suitably rated charging cable; a USB-C-shaped connector alone does not confirm compatibility.
Why won’t my power bank charge my laptop?
Common possibilities include using a USB-C port that does not accept charging, an underpowered or incompatible power-bank output, a cable that cannot handle the required power, or a hub or dock in the connection path. Connect directly to the documented charging port and test one known-good cable or source at a time.

Why is my laptop charging slowly from a power bank?
The bank may not supply enough power for the laptop, the cable may be under-rated, or the connection may use the wrong port. Slow charging or battery drain does not prove one specific fault. On Windows, compare with the supplied charger and cable; charging while asleep or off may help if the source cannot keep up while the laptop is running.
What wattage power bank do I need for my laptop?
There is no universal wattage. Check the exact laptop model’s minimum or recommended charging power, confirm the bank’s specific USB-C port supports the required USB-PD output, and use a cable rated for that power. Microsoft’s Surface examples include 39W or 45W minimums and 60W recommendations for fast charging on some models, and 60W minimums for Surface Laptop 5 and 4; those figures are model-specific.
Does every USB-C cable charge a laptop?
No. Some USB-C cables support data transfer but not charging, and others may not be rated for the power the laptop needs. Use a charging-capable cable with an appropriate rating and replace a damaged cable, especially one that only works when moved or wiggled.

What does “Slow Charger” mean on a Mac?
Apple says it indicates that the delivered wattage is too low for that Mac model. “Charging On Hold” and a charge limit are different battery-management states, so check the exact message before deciding that the power bank is faulty.
The Bottom Line
Before replacing a USB-C power bank, verify that your exact laptop model accepts USB-C charging, use its designated charging port, and compare the bank’s per-port USB-PD output and cable rating with the laptop maker’s requirements. Connect directly, check the displayed charging status, and test with a known-good source and cable. If the laptop still will not charge with a compatible setup, contact the laptop maker rather than assuming a new power bank will solve it.
