First determine where the mark appears. A dot or number on an app icon is a notification badge; a symbol in the top status bar is a status icon; and an alert in the swipe-down shade is a panel notification. They are controlled by different settings. For an app badge, open the notification panel, inspect or dismiss that app’s alert, then check Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > App icon badges. For a status-bar symbol, identify the icon and the feature generating it before changing settings.
Samsung notes that icon names, layouts and available controls vary by Galaxy model, carrier and software version. The exact model, One UI version and a screenshot or description of an unidentified symbol are therefore important for a definitive diagnosis.
Identify which kind of notification icon is stuck
Use the icon’s location to choose the correct troubleshooting path. Treating a status-bar symbol as an app badge, or vice versa, can leave the original cause untouched.
| Where you see it | What it usually represents | First action |
|---|---|---|
| On an app icon on the Home screen or Apps screen | An app icon badge (a dot or a number) linked to one or more notifications | Swipe down to inspect that app’s notifications, then review badge controls |
| At the top of the display in the status bar | A system, connection, feature or app-specific status symbol | Identify the symbol, the active feature and your One UI version |
| Inside the swipe-down notification panel | An active alert that may need to be opened, acted on or dismissed | Expand the alert and follow its action before clearing it |
Samsung’s general icon reference explains that status symbols differ by model, software version, carrier and currently enabled features. It also does not list every app-specific notification symbol, so an icon absent from that guide is not necessarily an error. See Samsung’s icon guide when you need to compare a symbol.

Use this quick path before changing settings
- Look at the location. Decide whether the mark is attached to an app icon, displayed in the top status bar, or shown as an alert in the notification shade.
- Open the notification panel. Swipe down from the top of the screen. Expand notifications from the app that appears to be associated with the mark. Open the app or complete the requested action if the alert still matters.
- Dismiss only the relevant alert. Swipe an individual notification away, or use the panel’s clear option when you are certain none of the alerts need attention. Samsung documents both individual dismissal and clearing all panel notifications.
- Recover anything dismissed accidentally. Go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. The wording or placement can differ by software version, but this screen is intended to show recent or missed alerts.
- For a Home-screen dot or number, check badges. Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > App icon badges, then inspect the affected app’s notification settings.
- For an unidentified top-bar symbol, stop before disabling notifications. Note the icon’s shape, the phone model, carrier and One UI version. Those details determine which support instructions apply.
When the mark is a dot or number on an app icon
Galaxy app icon badges are tied to notifications. Samsung describes badges as dots or numbers displayed on an app icon, and clearing the underlying notification can remove the badge. That relationship means the most reliable fix is to find the notification rather than immediately turning off every notification.
Inspect and act on the app’s notification
- Swipe down from the top of the display to open the notification panel.
- Find the alert from the app carrying the badge. Pull down or tap the alert to expand its details.
- Open the app, approve the requested action, or dismiss that one alert. If several alerts from the same app are grouped, expand the group and review each item.
- Return to the Home screen and check the app icon. A badge based on the cleared alert should disappear; a badge that remains indicates another notification or a badge-setting issue.
Do not assume that clearing one alert removes every possible source. An app can have multiple notification categories, and another active alert from the same app can continue to produce the badge.
Recover an alert you cleared by mistake
Use Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history to review recent or missed alerts. Select the entry to identify which app generated it, then open that app’s notification settings if you need to change its behavior. Samsung’s support instructions note that the exact path can vary with the Galaxy’s software version; if you do not see the option at that location, search Settings for “Notification history.”

Check the global badge control
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Select App icon badges.
- Ensure badges are enabled and choose the display style offered on your device, such as a number or a dot.
After changing the global option, check the individual app. Some Galaxy versions expose additional badge behavior through the app’s notification page, so an app can still have a category disabled even when the global badge switch is on.
Confirm which launcher is in use
Samsung’s One UI Home launcher supports app icon badges. A third-party launcher may not implement Samsung’s badge system or may provide its own badge switch. If badges work in One UI Home but not in another launcher, the launcher—not the app’s notification—may be responsible. Temporarily switching to One UI Home or consulting the other launcher’s notification-badge setting can distinguish those cases. Samsung discusses this limitation in its guidance on app icon badges not appearing.
When the app’s notification is missing or keeps returning
If the badge or alert behaves inconsistently, inspect the app’s notification permissions and categories instead of disabling notifications system-wide.

Review app notification categories
- Go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app in question.
- Check the main notification permission and each listed category. A category can be silent, blocked or configured differently from the app’s other alerts.
- Open the app’s notification and category controls to confirm that the alert type you expect is allowed.
Category names and available switches vary by app. If Notification history shows an alert but the panel no longer displays it, the history entry can help identify the category that needs adjustment.
Check Deep sleeping and Do not disturb
Samsung’s notification troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the app is listed under Deep sleeping apps and whether Do not disturb is enabled. Deep sleeping can delay background activity, while Do not disturb can suppress the sound or appearance of alerts according to its rules. Review those controls only for the affected app and the period when the icon problem occurs. The Samsung UK instructions are available at What to do if notifications are not showing or there is no sound.
When the icon is in the top status bar
A status-bar symbol is not the same as an app icon badge. It can indicate connectivity, a system mode, an active feature or an app-specific notification. Because Samsung changes symbols and layouts across models, carriers and One UI releases, there is no universal “clear persistent icon” switch.

Identify the symbol before changing anything
- Capture a screenshot while the icon is visible, or describe its shape and color precisely.
- Record the Galaxy model, carrier and One UI version. You can usually find software information under Settings > About phone > Software information, although menu names can differ.
- Pull down the notification panel and look for an alert that appeared at the same time. Opening or dismissing that alert may remove an app-generated status symbol, but it will not remove a system indicator that represents an active feature.
- Compare the symbol with Samsung’s regional icon guide. If it is not listed, treat it as potentially app-specific and identify the app shown in the notification panel.
Samsung’s Canadian support page explains the variation and the limits of the general list: Identify and understand the icons displayed in the top right corner of your Samsung Galaxy.
Check for software-specific behavior
Samsung has a separate troubleshooting page for status-bar issues after the One UI 8.5 update. It documents, among other covered behaviors, duplicate notification icons associated with the Notification highlights feature. This is an update-specific condition, not a general explanation for every icon that remains visible. If your phone is running the affected software and the symptom matches duplicate notification symbols, follow the steps in Samsung’s One UI 8.5 status-bar troubleshooting guide.

A panel notification that refuses to disappear is usually controlled by the app that posted it. Expand the notification to see whether it offers an action such as stopping a task, completing setup or opening the app. Use the notification’s individual dismiss control after completing that action. If it returns immediately, inspect the app under Settings > Notifications > App notifications and review its categories.

Do not clear every notification as a first response. Doing so can erase useful context and may hide the alert that explains the icon. If you cleared it already, use Notification history to recover the app and approximate timing, then adjust only the responsible category.
Decision table: choose the next step by symptom
| Symptom | Likely control | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Number or dot on one app icon | App notification or badge setting | Review that app’s panel alerts, then check App icon badges and the app’s categories |
| Badge remains after clearing one alert | Another alert or category from the same app | Expand grouped notifications and inspect Notification history |
| Badges absent in a non-Samsung launcher | Launcher compatibility | Test One UI Home or enable the launcher’s own badge feature |
| Symbol at the top right with no matching alert | System or feature indicator | Identify the symbol using the model and One UI version before changing settings |
| Two similar symbols after an update | Potential One UI 8.5 Notification highlights behavior | Compare the symptom with Samsung’s One UI 8.5 status-bar guidance |
| Alerts do not appear or arrive silently | App category, Deep sleeping or Do not disturb | Review App notifications, sleeping status and Do not disturb rules |
What not to do
- Do not disable all notifications as the first fix. That can hide the alert without identifying its source and can prevent important messages from appearing.
- Do not treat every icon as an app badge. Status symbols and Home-screen badges use different controls.
- Do not assume Samsung’s menu path is identical on every phone. Model, carrier and One UI version affect labels and feature availability.
- Do not install a cleaner or repair utility for this symptom. The relevant checks—notification history, app categories, badge settings and launcher selection—are built into Galaxy software.
When you need a more specific diagnosis
If the icon remains after reviewing the appropriate path, collect the screenshot or exact symbol description, Galaxy model, carrier and One UI version. Also note which app was active when the icon appeared and whether it is visible on the lock screen, Home screen, status bar or only in the notification panel. Those details distinguish an app badge, an app-specific status icon, a system indicator and an update-related display issue. Samsung’s documentation confirms that an unidentified status symbol cannot be interpreted reliably without that device and software context.
