When a household robot misunderstands you or behaves unexpectedly, first identify what it got wrong: a gesture or command, an object or boundary, its location or map, or a scheduled routine. Stop it if its movement could be unsafe, then try reversible checks—lighting, floor clutter, sensor care, and app or map settings—before restarting or resetting it. Features and fixes differ by model, so use the instructions for your exact robot.
First, work out what the robot misread
“It doesn’t understand me” can describe several different problems. A robot vacuum might fail to recognize an obstacle, lose its position, follow an incorrect room schedule, or ignore a gesture that its model does not support. These problems have different causes and remedies.
- Gesture or command: It does not respond to a hand signal, button press, app command, or supported voice instruction.
- Object or boundary: It bumps into something, avoids an empty patch, misses an object, or crosses a boundary it should respect.
- Room or map: It starts in the wrong place, confuses rooms, or behaves as if the home layout has changed.
- Routine or schedule: It cleans the wrong room, at the wrong time, in an unexpected mode, or not at all.
- Sensor or system fault: It reports an error, repeatedly loses localization, or continues behaving abnormally after environmental and app checks.
Before testing, note the robot’s exact model, what it did, where it happened, and whether the same behavior repeats. Gesture support, sensors, mapping, app controls, and reset procedures vary by product. Find the model number and consult its manual and manufacturer support page rather than assuming that a feature or fix applies across brands.

It can help to describe the event in plain, specific terms: “It stopped in front of the mirror,” “It began the bedroom schedule but cleaned the hall,” or “It did not respond to the hand signal.” Support pages use similarly concrete descriptions, including “AI detection/object avoidance not working as expected” and “My robot routinely bumps into glass objects.” The exact wording is not a diagnosis, but a clear description helps distinguish a perception issue from a map, routine, or hardware problem.

Stop first if movement could be unsafe
If the robot is moving unpredictably near a person, pet, stairs, a spill, or a fragile object, stop it using its normal control and check the model’s safety instructions before trying again. Don’t keep repeating a test in a hazardous setting just to see whether the behavior recurs. Record what happened and whether it repeats, but do not recreate the situation if doing so would put someone or something at risk.
When it misreads objects, obstacles, or boundaries
Object avoidance is not a guarantee that a robot will identify every object or steer clear of every surface. The room itself can affect what the robot detects: camera-based systems may depend on lighting and the appearance of an object, while reflective surfaces can confuse some mapping and sensing systems. A collision or false obstacle can therefore arise from the robot’s limitations, the environment, or a combination of both; it does not by itself prove that a sensor is broken.
Make the test area easier to read
- Improve the lighting. If the robot uses a camera, test it in a well-lit area. Dyson says that lighting and an object’s type or color can affect object-avoidance accuracy; its support page states, “Your robot is not designed to operate in darkness.” That statement describes Dyson’s cited product guidance, not every robot.
- Clear floor hazards. Remove loose small items, cords, shoelaces, spills, or thin rugs if the manual identifies them as hazards. A robot may tangle with or fail to detect objects close to the floor. Clearing the area is a reversible check: it reduces hazards without changing a map or deleting saved settings.
- Check for reflective surfaces. Mirrors, windows, and shiny furniture may produce misleading LiDAR returns or inaccurate maps. iRobot’s guidance on mirrors describes these effects and discusses map controls. If the same glass or mirror surface repeatedly causes trouble, check whether your model offers a supported keep-out or avoid area.
- Consider whether the object is difficult for this model. Xiaomi’s X20+ support page lists dark, reflective, transparent, small, low, and blind-spot objects among possible detection limitations for that model. These examples are not a universal list for all robots.
Some models offer app-based restricted areas; others may not. Use a physical boundary marker only if the manufacturer recommends one and it can be placed without creating a trip hazard or blocking a safe passage. Avoid improvising a barrier that could make the route less safe.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the issue is repeatable, note the object or surface involved and whether it occurs in one location or across the home. That detail can guide the next check: a problem limited to a mirror or a particular object points toward an environmental interaction, while a general change in detection may warrant checking sensor condition or the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps. These clues do not replace model-specific diagnosis.
When the robot loses its place or creates a bad map
A robot that heads for the wrong room or behaves as though a wall has moved may have a map or localization problem rather than an object-detection problem. Check whether it was lifted or moved, whether doors or furniture changed, whether lighting is different, and whether reflective surfaces could be affecting its sensors. Compare the saved map with the home as it is now.

- Microfiber 16 x 12-inch cleaning cloth (24-pack); ideal for cleaning cars, trucks, boats, and more
- Ultra-soft and non-abrasive car drying towels; will not scratch paints, vinyl, glass, finishes, or other surfaces
- Effectively cleans either dry or with liquid cleaners for streak-free results and a lint-free shine
- Durable and absorbent; soak up 8 times their own weight
- Can be reused hundreds of times
Look for a concrete mismatch rather than assuming the whole map is unusable: a room label that no longer matches, a path that appears blocked, or a reflection that seems to extend a room can help explain why the robot chooses an unexpected route. If the robot was moved, mention that when following the model’s map recovery instructions; map and localization behavior varies, so do not assume every robot updates its map in the same way.
Inspect the sensor without risking damage
Look for dust or smears on the camera lens or other sensor surfaces. Clean them only as the exact model’s manual directs. For the robot covered by its cited support guidance, Dyson recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and says not to use cleaning fluids, liquids, or sprays. Do not apply that cleaning instruction to another product unless its manufacturer says to do so. A lint-free microfiber cloth may match the general description, but the manual—not the cloth recommendation—determines whether and how to clean a particular robot.

Dyson’s support guidance says mirrors and windows may affect mapping, advises preparing the floor before mapping, and says not to interrupt the mapping process. It also notes that the cited robot should not be expected to operate in darkness. These are Dyson-specific recommendations; another model may have different mapping requirements. If you create or update a map, follow the procedure in that robot’s manual and app.
Before starting a fresh mapping run, make the conditions match the manufacturer’s instructions: prepare the floor as directed and avoid interrupting the process when the maker says to let it finish. Changing several things at once—such as moving furniture, changing map settings, and resetting the robot—makes it harder to tell what addressed the problem. Prefer one reversible check at a time when the situation is safe.
When a room, schedule, or routine seems wrong
Before changing the map or resetting the robot, review the settings that determine where and when it cleans. In the manufacturer’s app, check the saved map, room names, active schedule, cleaning mode, and any avoid or no-go areas. Confirm that doors and paths are open if the robot is supposed to reach another room.

Dyson’s support material describes checking active schedules and using map-based avoid rules. The exact labels and features depend on the product and app version, so look for equivalent controls in your own model’s app rather than expecting the same menu names. A routine that looks like a perception failure may simply be following a saved schedule, mode, room label, or restriction you did not intend.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare what the robot did with what the app says it was asked to do. If the schedule names a different room or the map labels do not match the current layout, correct those settings using the app’s instructions. If the requested room is correct, check whether a door or path was open. Avoid deleting or rebuilding a map as a first step when a schedule, room label, or avoid zone may explain the behavior.
When it ignores a gesture or command
Start by confirming that the exact model supports gesture input. Household robots do not share a universal gesture vocabulary, and the available support guidance does not establish one standard repair sequence for gesture recognition. If the manual does not list gesture control, use an interface the model explicitly supports, such as its app, physical buttons, or a compatible voice control.
- Check the manual or model support page for supported gestures and any setup steps.
- Look for model-specific requirements such as camera use, distance, lighting, or accessibility settings.
- Try a supported app or button command to distinguish a gesture problem from a broader control or system problem.
- If the robot still fails to respond, follow its model-specific troubleshooting guidance or contact the manufacturer.
Do not assume that making a gesture more emphatically will fix recognition; the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that as a reliable remedy. Likewise, do not infer that a robot has a camera-based gesture feature just because it has a camera for another function. Confirm the exact feature and its setup in the manual.
Choose the next step by symptom
| What you observe | First checks | Next step if it continues |
|---|---|---|
| Gesture or command not recognized | Confirm the feature is supported; check the model’s setup, camera, distance, lighting, and accessibility requirements. | Test another supported control method, then consult the model’s support guidance. |
| Object missed, false obstacle, or collision | Improve lighting where relevant, clear loose hazards, and check for reflective surfaces or objects the model may struggle to detect. | Use a supported avoid-area setting if available; contact the manufacturer if behavior persists. |
| Wrong room or inaccurate map | Check whether the robot was moved, lighting changed, the home layout changed, or mirrors and windows affect mapping. Inspect sensors using the manual’s cleaning method. | Follow the model’s mapping procedure and app guidance; don’t interrupt a mapping run if the manufacturer says not to. |
| Wrong room, time, or cleaning mode | Review room labels, schedule, cleaning mode, avoid zones, and access through doors and paths. | Use the app’s model-specific instructions to correct the map or routine. |
| Persistent sensor or system error | Record the exact message and follow the manufacturer’s stated power-cycle or troubleshooting steps. | Contact support if the error remains; don’t jump to a factory reset. |
The table is a triage guide, not a universal repair chart. Its key distinction is the type of symptom and the least disruptive applicable response: an environment change for a likely environmental issue, an app or map correction for a routine or layout issue, sensor cleaning only as directed, and a restart or support contact only when the model’s instructions call for it. Each remedy is model-specific, especially where camera, LiDAR, map, or error behavior is involved.

Restart and reset only after simpler checks
A restart or power cycle may be appropriate when the manufacturer recommends it for a particular error. A factory reset is a different, more disruptive step: it may erase maps or settings, and the procedure varies by model. Don’t use one as a generic first response to a misunderstood gesture, obstacle, or routine.
Samsung’s guidance for the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo directs users to power-cycle the robot for certain sensor and system error messages and to contact support if the error remains. Follow that instruction only for the relevant model and error; consult your robot’s own support page for its procedure. A Samsung support query may phrase an alert as “The object recognition sensor needs to be reset.” Treat the exact error wording as important: it is model-family guidance, not evidence that another robot needs the same reset.
- Write down the exact error message and model number.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that error, including any specified power cycle.
- Check whether the error clears and whether the original behavior returns.
- If it persists, contact manufacturer support before attempting a factory reset or buying a replacement sensor or part.
When to contact the manufacturer
Escalate when the robot continues to report a sensor, camera, or system error after the prescribed power cycle; when it behaves unsafely despite clearing hazards and correcting settings; or when the manual’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve a repeated problem. Provide the model number, exact error wording, what the robot was doing, and which checks you tried. Use authorized model-specific parts only after confirming the diagnosis and compatibility with the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
There is no named statistic in the support material reviewed that can predict how often these problems occur, and no single feature or repair applies to every household robot. The reliable path is to identify the symptom, make the least disruptive relevant check, and escalate according to the instructions for the exact model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my robot vacuum keep bumping into glass or a mirror?
Reflective surfaces such as mirrors and windows can mislead some mapping systems, including LiDAR-based systems, and contribute to inaccurate maps. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your model and use an app keep-out or avoid area only if supported. Do not assume every robot responds the same way.

Why does a robot with obstacle avoidance still collide with objects?
Obstacle avoidance is not a guarantee. Detection can depend on the model and the object’s appearance; Xiaomi’s X20+ guidance lists dark, reflective, transparent, small, low, or blind-spot objects as possible limitations for that model. Clear hazards and check the manufacturer’s instructions for your robot.
Should I clean the robot’s camera or sensors?
Only use the cleaning method specified for the exact model. Dyson recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for the cited robot and says not to use cleaning fluids, liquids, or sprays. That is not a universal instruction for other products.
Should I factory-reset a robot that misunderstands a routine or gesture?
Not as an early generic fix. First check whether the model supports the feature, and review its app, map, schedule, lighting, and sensor guidance as relevant. A factory reset may erase maps or settings; follow the manufacturer’s exact procedure only when appropriate.
What should I do if a sensor error remains after restarting?
Record the model number and exact message, then follow the manufacturer’s specified power-cycle steps for that error. Samsung’s Bespoke Jet Bot Combo guidance says to contact support if certain sensor or system errors remain after power cycling. Other models may have different instructions.
The Bottom Line
Classify the problem before changing settings: gesture or command, object or boundary, map or room, schedule, or system error. Start with safe, reversible checks and the exact model’s manual; clean sensors, restart, or reset only as that manufacturer directs. If an error persists or behavior remains unsafe, contact model-specific support.
