Stop before placing the order. Compare the restaurant, location, items, sizes, quantities, modifiers, fulfillment method, discounts, fees, taxes and tip in the cart with the menu listing. Save a screenshot of the checkout total. If the amount charged after submission is different from that saved total, compare the receipt and confirmation, then contact the platform with the exact discrepancy; contact the restaurant as well when the food price or item configuration is wrong.
First determine which price changed
A higher total does not automatically mean the app made an error. There are three different comparisons people often call a “price change,” and each needs a different response:

- Menu price versus restaurant price: the delivery listing may use a different food price from the restaurant’s in-store or own-ordering menu.
- Listing price versus checkout total: fees, taxes, surcharges, tip, item options or promotion limits may be added or recalculated in the cart.
- Checkout total versus amount charged: the payment that posts after you submit the order may differ from the total you were shown at checkout. That is the discrepancy to document and escalate immediately.
Do not compare a pickup order with a delivery order, or one restaurant location with another, as though they were identical transactions.
Check the cart line by line before ordering
Use this sequence whenever the total changes:
- Confirm the restaurant and location. A chain can have separate menus, prices and fees by branch.
- Match every item. Check the exact name, size, quantity and base price. A similarly named combo or larger portion can look like a changed price.
- Open modifiers and add-ons. Extra protein, toppings, substitutions, sides, drinks and special packaging can carry separate charges. Remove anything you did not deliberately select.
- Check the fulfillment method. Delivery, pickup and scheduled orders can have different costs and eligibility rules.
- Review promotions. Confirm the discount is attached to the qualifying items, minimum subtotal, location, payment method and time window. Some offers exclude fees, taxes, alcohol, small orders or other categories.
- Expand the order summary. Read the item subtotal, each mandatory fee, surcharge, tax, discount and tip separately rather than relying on the large final number.
- Save evidence. Take a screenshot showing the checkout total and keep the order confirmation, receipt and payment notification. Include the date, time and order number.
If the difference is explained by one of these entries, decide whether the revised total is acceptable before submitting. If an entry is missing, duplicated or describes an option you did not choose, do not place the order until it is corrected or explained.

What can be included in the final total?
| Line item | What to verify | Typical question |
|---|---|---|
| Food subtotal | Exact item, size, quantity and restaurant location | Is this the same menu configuration I selected? |
| Modifiers and add-ons | Every paid option and substitution | Did the cart add an option that was only meant to replace another one? |
| Delivery or service fees | Whether the charge is mandatory, tiered or conditional | Was the fee disclosed before checkout, and does it change with distance or order size? |
| Small-order, regulatory or other surcharges | Name and trigger for each surcharge | Did the subtotal fall below a minimum or activate a location-specific charge? |
| Tax | Taxable items and delivery address | Is the tax calculated for the correct jurisdiction? |
| Promotion | Discount amount and restrictions | Did the code expire, require a minimum, or exclude the selected items? |
| Tip | Amount, percentage and whether it is optional | Did the app retain a default tip or change it when the subtotal changed? |
| Final charged amount | Payment record after submission | Does the posted charge equal the checkout total I saved? |
Why an app menu can cost more than ordering in person
Delivery platforms do not necessarily display the same food prices as a restaurant’s dining-room or own-ordering channel. DoorDash said on June 30, 2023 that it does not require restaurants to match in-store prices on delivery orders and that restaurants make their own delivery-menu pricing decisions. Read that statement in its stated scope; it is not proof that every platform, merchant or jurisdiction follows the same practice. DoorDash’s June 30, 2023 statement
DoorDash’s consumer terms also say prices shown through its services may differ from merchant or third-party prices and may change. The Caviar help center similarly says menu prices are set at restaurant management’s discretion and notes that some restaurant partners include fees. Those are platform-specific policies, not a universal legal rule. DoorDash consumer terms and Caviar help information
For a meaningful comparison, open both channels and use the same location, items, modifiers and fulfillment method. Record the food subtotal separately from delivery costs. A restaurant’s pickup price may be lower simply because delivery-related charges do not apply.

Compare another ordering channel fairly
| Comparison | Keep identical | Record separately |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery app versus restaurant website | Location, items, sizes, quantities, modifiers and delivery address | Food subtotal, platform fees, restaurant fees, taxes, discount and tip |
| Delivery versus pickup | Restaurant, menu configuration and promotion eligibility | Delivery fee, service fee, pickup charge, travel cost and tip |
| Two app listings | Restaurant branch, fulfillment time and order contents | Each platform’s fees, taxes, promotion rules and final total |
Do not treat a lower advertised item price as the cheaper order until every mandatory charge and the same tip assumption are included.
What to do when the charged amount is higher than checkout
Save the checkout screen before you contact anyone. Then compare it with the confirmation, receipt and payment-account entry. Note the exact difference, not merely that the order “cost more.” For example: “Checkout showed $42.18; the receipt and card authorization show $46.18, a $4.00 difference.” Identify whether the change is in the subtotal, a fee, tax, tip or an unexplained line.
- Open the platform’s order-help or support area for the specific order.
- Attach the checkout screenshot, confirmation and receipt if uploads are available.
- State the restaurant location, order number, affected item or line, displayed total, charged total and dollar difference.
- Ask the platform to explain the discrepancy and correct the charge if it was incorrect. Do not assume that support must provide a particular refund; available remedies depend on the platform, payment method and jurisdiction.
- Contact the restaurant when its listed food price, portion, modifier or item configuration appears wrong. The restaurant may control the menu data even when the platform processed payment.
Keep the support ticket number and responses. If the platform cannot resolve an unexplained payment difference, ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process and deadlines; provide the saved records rather than relying on memory.

California and other location-specific fee displays
Fee presentation can depend on where the order is placed. Uber Eats says that, in California, a law beginning July 1, 2024 led it to show delivery-fee tiers rather than specific delivery prices before checkout; it says applicable fees and taxes appear at checkout. This is California-specific company guidance, not a nationwide description of every Uber Eats order or every delivery service. Uber Eats’ California help page
Before relying on a legal explanation, check the app’s current disclosures for your delivery address and the rules of your jurisdiction. A change in what appears on the restaurant page does not necessarily mean the final amount is wrong; it may mean that a required fee is shown later in the ordering flow.
What the FTC fee proceeding means for consumers
On April 15, 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced a proposed rulemaking seeking public comment on potentially unfair or deceptive pricing and fees in online food- and grocery-delivery services. The topics include whether item prices differ from in-store or restaurant prices, whether prices vary by consumer, and whether charges are clearly disclosed. The announcement listed May 18, 2026 as the comment deadline. The cited action is a proposal, not an enacted nationwide rule, so it does not by itself guarantee a refund or determine that a particular restaurant or app violated the law. The FTC’s consumer guidance asks shoppers to examine total-price disclosure, when fees appear, online-versus-store price differences and promotion restrictions. Those checks are useful even where no final rule applies. The agency’s consumer alert is available at FTC consumer advice.

The food subtotal is higher, but all fees are unchanged
Recheck the branch, size, quantity and modifiers. Then compare the app listing with the restaurant’s own channel using the same fulfillment method. A different delivery-menu price may be intentional under the restaurant’s pricing policy. Ask the restaurant or platform to correct a menu entry only when the listed item or configuration is clearly wrong.

The subtotal matches, but the final total is higher
Expand every fee, surcharge, tax, discount and tip. Look for a promotion that no longer qualifies after an item change, a minimum-order charge, or a fee that is displayed only at checkout in your location. Save the complete summary before deciding.

The checkout screen was correct, but the receipt is higher
Treat this as a payment discrepancy. Preserve the screenshot and order records, identify the exact dollar difference, and contact platform support. If the receipt contains an item or modifier you never selected, include that detail and contact the restaurant as well.
The app and restaurant disagree about the menu
Send both parties the same evidence: restaurant location, item name, size, modifier, displayed price and timestamp. Ask which channel controls the listing and request a correction. Do not place a second order until you know which total will be charged.
How to prevent surprises on future orders
- Open the full order summary instead of relying on a restaurant-card price.
- Use a consistent tip assumption when comparing channels.
- Check promotion restrictions before changing quantities or substitutions.
- Save the final checkout screen for unusually large or disputed orders.
- Review the payment notification after submission and report a mismatch promptly.
- Remember that fees, menus and disclosure rules can vary by platform, restaurant location and delivery address.
The practical test is simple: match the transaction configuration, separate food prices from order costs, preserve what the app displayed, and escalate only the specific unexplained difference. That approach distinguishes a permitted menu-price difference from an incorrect fee or charge without assuming that every higher checkout total is unlawful.
