If a rechargeable AA or AAA cell will not charge, start by checking four things: the cell is genuinely rechargeable, the charger matches its chemistry and size, the cell is making clean contact in the correct slot, and the device is designed to charge batteries internally. A device can accept AA batteries without charging them. Stop immediately if a cell becomes extremely hot, leaks, swells, bubbles, or has other visible damage.
The sequence below separates a charger problem, a contact or setup problem, a device limitation, and a worn-out cell so you can identify the fault without damaging the battery or equipment.
1. Check the battery and charger before applying power
Read the markings on both products. Charge only a cell explicitly labeled rechargeable, and use a charger designed for that cell’s chemistry and physical size. AA and AAA describe dimensions, not chemistry; two cells of the same size can require different charging equipment.
Never put a disposable alkaline or another cell that is not marked rechargeable into a rechargeable-cell charger. Duracell warns that attempting to charge a battery not marked rechargeable can cause leakage or rupture; its guidance is available in the Duracell battery FAQ. Panasonic likewise warns that an eneloop cell should not be charged with a charger intended only for Ni-Cd cells. Check the charger’s label and manual for the supported chemistry rather than relying on the battery’s size alone.

Look for bent, cracked, swollen, corroded, or leaking casings. Do not charge or use a damaged cell. Put it aside for disposal according to your local battery-recycling rules; do not place a leaking cell back into a device or charger.
2. Follow this troubleshooting sequence
Confirm power, polarity, and slot placement
- Verify the charger has power. Make sure its plug, USB lead, or power adapter is fully connected and that the outlet or powered USB port works. If the charger has a power indicator, consult its manual for the meaning of that light.
- Match every cell to the polarity diagram. The positive and negative ends must face the directions shown in the charger’s slot. Spring-loaded contacts can make a cell appear seated while one end is actually missing the terminal.
- Use the slots specified by the manual. Some chargers require a pair or a particular combination of occupied slots; others can charge cells independently. Do not infer the rule from another charger.
- Interpret status lights only with the charger’s instructions. A flashing, steady, red, green, or unlit indicator does not have a universal meaning. The same color can mean charging, charged, fault, or standby on different models.
If the charger has no light at all, test its power connection and read the manual before assuming that the cell is dead. A light that changes state can indicate that the charger has detected a cell, but it does not by itself prove that the cell has reached full capacity.
Remove insulating packaging and clean contacts
New chargers or battery kits can include an insulating tray, sheet, or shipping insert. Panasonic specifically notes that this packaging can remain in an eneloop charger set and prevent electrical contact. Remove any insert shown in the setup instructions before inserting cells.

For an apparent contact problem, gently wipe the battery terminals and charger terminals with tissue paper or a clean, dry cloth, following Panasonic’s eneloop FAQ guidance. Do not scrape the metal, bend the springs, bridge the positive and negative terminals, or use a wet cleaner. Reinsert the cell with the correct polarity and make sure it sits firmly against both contacts.
Determine whether the device charges AA or AAA cells internally
An AA-compatible device is not necessarily a battery charger. Many products accept removable AA or AAA cells only for operation and require those cells to be charged in an external charger. Garmin states that most of its outdoor handheld units that accept AA batteries do not charge the inserted cells. Only certain listed models charge a Garmin NiMH battery pack, as explained in its support article, Using Rechargeable AA/AAA Batteries in an Outdoor Handheld Device.
Read the exact model’s manual for words such as “recharge,” “charging cradle,” “battery pack,” or “external charger.” If the manual does not explicitly support in-device charging, remove the cells and charge them in a compatible external charger. When a device offers a battery-type setting, select the rechargeable or NiMH option only when that is the type installed and the manual calls for that setting.

Assess whether the cell has degraded
If the charger, contacts, polarity, and device design all check out but runtime has fallen substantially compared with when the cell was new, Panasonic says replacement may be appropriate. A cell can still make the charger’s indicator change while holding too little energy to run a camera, game controller, flashlight, or other high-drain device for useful time.

Duracell advises against mixing old and new batteries in the same equipment. Cells with different ages or capacities can discharge unevenly, leaving the device to shut down early or report a low-battery condition even though one cell is relatively full.
3. Know when heat is normal and when it is dangerous
A rechargeable cell can become warm during charging. The temperature depends on the chemistry, charger design, charge rate, ambient temperature, and cell condition. Panasonic says an eneloop battery surface may reach 55 °C during charging and states that its chargers use temperature detection and control. That is manufacturer guidance for eneloop cells and compatible Panasonic chargers, not a universal safe limit for every AA or AAA product.

Stop charging and disconnect the charger if a cell becomes extremely hot, bubbles, leaks, swells, or shows other visible damage. VARTA distinguishes ordinary warmth from extreme heat or bubbling on the label, which can indicate possible overcharging; see its consumer product FAQ. Do not handle a badly overheated cell more than necessary, do not puncture it, and do not put it back into service after it cools. Follow the cell and charger instructions for safe disposal.
4. Separate a charging fault from a device fault
Use the evidence from the charger and the device together:
- No charger light or detection: Recheck the power connection, polarity, slot requirements, insulating packaging, and terminal cleanliness. A chemistry mismatch or damaged cell can also prevent detection.
- The charger reports a fault: Remove the cell, inspect it for damage, and consult the charger manual. Do not repeatedly force a cell to charge when the charger identifies it as defective.
- The charger reports “full,” but the device remains off: Verify that the device actually supports the installed cell type and that all cells are oriented correctly. If it requires an external charger, the device’s acceptance of AA or AAA does not mean its internal circuitry can refill them.
- The device runs briefly and stops: Substantially reduced runtime points toward degraded cells. Replace a multi-cell set together instead of mixing old and new cells.
- Heat, bubbling, leakage, or swelling appears: Stop immediately and do not continue testing that cell.
Do not use an indicator color from one charger to diagnose another model. For example, a green light can mean “full” on one design and “standby” on another; only the product’s own documentation defines it.

5. What to look for in a replacement charger
If the original charger is incompatible, unreliable, or missing, compare chargers by the features that affect safe diagnosis and everyday use.

The Energizer Recharge Value Charger product page describes a manufacturer example that supports two or four AA or AAA NiMH cells, provides charging-status lights and a bad-battery indicator, and includes overcharge protection and automatic shutoff. Energizer states a five-hour charge time for two or four cells. That is a specification for that charger under its stated conditions, not a general rule: another charger, cell capacity, temperature, or starting charge can produce a different time.
6. A practical replacement decision
Keep using the cell
Continue using a cell only when it is explicitly rechargeable, matches the charger’s chemistry and size, charges without a fault, and remains free of leakage, swelling, bubbling, or dangerous heat. Normal warmth by itself is not proof of a failure, but monitor the cell according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Replace the cell or the complete set
Replace a cell when the earlier checks do not restore normal operation and its performance has decreased significantly. If the device uses a matched group, replace the group together so old and new cells are not mixed. Recycle the removed cells through an appropriate collection program rather than putting them in household trash where local rules prohibit that.
Replace or stop using the charger
Stop relying on a charger that is for the wrong chemistry, has damaged terminals or cables, repeatedly signals faults with known-good compatible cells, or shows signs of overheating. Do not modify a slot, bypass a safety cutoff, or substitute an adapter with an unverified voltage or polarity. Choose a charger whose manual clearly identifies the cells it can charge and explains its indicators.

- Remove any insulating tray or sheet and gently clean the terminals.
- Check the device manual to see whether it charges cells internally or needs an external charger.
- If runtime is substantially worse than when new, replace the cell; replace a multi-cell set together.
- Stop and dispose of the cell safely if it is extremely hot, bubbling, leaking, swollen, or visibly damaged.
