First, check the array or pool status in the management tool for your specific system, identify the exact affected device, and confirm the RAID level and storage implementation before removing or replacing anything. A degraded array has reduced protection and may also perform worse, but what it can still tolerate depends on its actual configuration. If important data is readable, protect it with an independent backup where possible. Then follow the controller, operating-system RAID, or filesystem vendor’s replacement procedure and monitor the rebuild or resilver until the system reports healthy.

Do not assume that every RAID system rebuilds automatically, that every drive can be hot-swapped, or that instructions for one RAID level apply to another. RAID 0 has no redundant recovery path in Oracle’s legacy RAID Manager guidance and may require restoring data from backup.

What “degraded” means—and what to do first

A degraded array is still operating with less protection than it had when healthy; depending on the configuration, performance may also be reduced. Seagate’s RAID Manager documentation describes degraded status in those terms. The status alone does not tell you whether the data is safe, how many more failures the array can tolerate, or what action to take next. Those answers depend on the RAID level, layout, controller or filesystem, and the devices currently online.

Treat a degraded warning as a prompt to verify and protect—not as a reason to immediately pull a drive. Start by recording the system’s reported state and the device identifier it flags. If the data is accessible, check whether a separate, independent backup exists and is usable. Only then move to hardware changes, after confirming the exact implementation and the correct physical device.

Make a brief record before changing anything

Write down the array or pool name, its reported status, the RAID level if shown, the flagged device identifier, and any controller or system event message. Note whether the system calls the array degraded, faulted, or unavailable; these states should not be treated as interchangeable. Keep the messages available if you need to contact the storage vendor or a recovery specialist.

Do not infer a failed physical disk from a generic warning alone. A device may be identified by a controller-specific name, a pool path, or a slot number, and those labels may not match the labels visible on the enclosure. Check the platform’s device mapping before disconnecting anything.

Use the recovery path for your storage implementation

“RAID” can refer to different arrangements managed by a hardware controller, operating-system software, or a filesystem such as ZFS. Device names and replacement steps vary. A command or procedure intended for one implementation may not apply to another, so use the status tool and vendor documentation for the system actually managing the array.

Controller-managed RAID

Read the controller’s status and event information, then consult the manual for that controller and its configuration. Controller behavior may include a configured hot spare, automatic rebuild initiation, or device states that require an explicit choice. Intel’s RAID guidance notes that a controller must be instructed how to handle drives reported in a foreign state. That is a controller-specific situation, not a general instruction to import or clear a foreign configuration.

Do not select a state-changing option such as import, clear, initialize, or rebuild based only on a generic description of the warning. First establish what the controller says the state represents and what the manual says the action will do in your configuration. If the intended action is unclear, stop and contact the controller or system vendor before proceeding.

Operating-system RAID

If the operating system manages the array, use its own RAID status and replacement guidance rather than assuming the hardware-controller workflow applies. Verify the affected device identifier in that management layer and confirm how it maps to the physical drive before removal. The supplied platform guidance does not establish a universal command sequence for operating-system RAID.

ZFS pools

ZFS has its own pool status, replacement, and resilver mechanisms. OpenZFS describes a degraded pool as one where devices have failed but data remains available because the pool has a redundant configuration. Use the pool’s status and the matching OpenZFS or distribution documentation to identify the affected device and carry out a replacement. Do not substitute a hardware RAID procedure for ZFS instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenZFS also documents dRAID configurations that can rebuild to an available distributed spare. That behavior is specific to a suitable dRAID setup; it is not evidence that every ZFS pool, or every array, will have an available spare or rebuild in the same way.

Check the RAID level before judging what can survive

Failure tolerance is determined by the actual configuration, not by the word RAID on a product or screen. The documented examples below describe specific guidance; they are not a substitute for checking the layout and current device state of your own system.

Configuration example What the cited guidance establishes What to do with that information
RAID 5 in Seagate RAID Manager documentation The documentation says RAID 5 survives one drive failure. Confirm that the array is actually RAID 5 and determine whether any other devices or components are already reporting problems before starting a replacement.
RAID 6 in IBM’s procedure IBM describes an array with one or two failed disks as degraded and gives replacement and rebuild guidance when no hot spare is available. Follow the IBM procedure only where it matches the controller and configuration; do not generalize its sequence to another platform.
RAID 0 in Oracle’s legacy RAID Manager guide For a failed drive in a RAID 0 logical unit, the guide describes replacing the drive, reformatting the logical unit, and restoring data from backup. Expect no redundant recovery path in this cited example. Avoid assuming a replacement drive will reconstruct the lost data.

These examples do not establish what every implementation can tolerate. A label such as RAID 5 or RAID 6 is not enough to decide whether it is safe to continue, because the actual array status and device configuration matter. If the reported failures exceed the configuration’s supported tolerance, or you cannot establish the current state, do not experiment with further changes.

Protect the data before attempting a rebuild

RAID and backup solve different problems. A rebuild or resilver is an operation to restore redundancy in an array or pool; it is not a substitute for an independent copy of the data. Oracle’s RAID 0 guidance specifically calls for restoring from backup after the described failure and reformatting process. Seagate’s RAID Manager FAQ describes replacement as a way to rebuild the array and restore redundancy, not as a backup procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the array remains readable and the data matters, prioritize a safe copy or verification of an independent backup before trying unfamiliar recovery actions. Do not assume that a degraded system will remain readable indefinitely, but also do not start a state-changing operation when you do not understand its effect. The right choice depends on the system’s current condition and the applicable vendor instructions.

  • Check that the backup is separate from the affected array or pool and that the needed data is present.
  • If you cannot confirm the backup or the array is unstable, seek advice from the storage vendor or a qualified recovery specialist before making speculative changes.
  • For RAID 0, plan on backup restoration where the applicable configuration has no redundant recovery path; replacing the failed device alone does not restore missing data.

Replace a confirmed failed drive carefully

Once the platform confirms a failed device and the array is still recoverable, follow its documented replacement or spare procedure. Seagate’s RAID Manager FAQ says, “Replacing the failed drive allows RAID Manager to rebuild the array and restore redundancy.” This statement applies to that product’s procedure; it is not a promise that other RAID systems rebuild automatically.

  1. Confirm the failed device in the management interface. Match the device identifier shown by the controller, operating system, or pool status to the enclosure’s physical slot using the system’s documentation. If the mapping is uncertain, do not remove a drive.
  2. Confirm that removal is supported. Check the platform instructions for whether the system supports hot-swap and how it expects the drive to be taken offline or replaced. Do not assume a drive can be removed while the system is running.
  3. Check the replacement specification. Verify the interface, capacity, form factor, and compatibility requirements for the actual controller or enclosure. A drive with the same advertised capacity is not necessarily suitable for every system.
  4. Use the system’s documented replacement or spare workflow. Follow the instructions for that specific controller or filesystem, including any required action to assign a spare or start a rebuild. Do not improvise based on another vendor’s procedure.
  5. Monitor the recovery operation. Watch the controller or pool status for rebuild or resilver progress and wait for the system to report that the operation has completed and the array is healthy. Detection of a new drive by itself does not mean redundancy has been restored.

Choose a replacement drive by compatibility, not capacity alone

There is no universal replacement model for this situation. Check the supported drive specifications for the particular array, enclosure, and controller before buying or installing hardware. The relevant fit includes the interface, form factor, capacity, and controller compatibility; confirm the vendor’s supported replacement procedure as well.

Do not treat “same capacity” as proof of compatibility or infer a specific model from general RAID guidance. The available platform information does not establish a model-level shortlist, drive ranking, or workload recommendation. If the specifications are unclear, ask the system or storage vendor to confirm an appropriate replacement for the exact configuration.

Monitor the rebuild or resilver through completion

A replacement is not complete merely because the system detects the new device. A rebuild or resilver must run to completion before the system has restored the redundancy it reports as missing. Check the relevant management interface for progress and the final health state, following the vendor’s instructions for interpreting it.

The documentation cited here does not establish a universal rebuild duration or risk percentage. Avoid relying on a time estimate from a different array or platform. If the operation stops, reports an error, or the array becomes unavailable, record the exact status and messages and contact the vendor or a qualified recovery specialist rather than repeatedly restarting or changing device states without guidance.

When to stop and get specialist help

Stop speculative changes if the array is unavailable, more devices have failed than the configuration supports, or you cannot confidently identify the affected physical drive. The sources do not provide a universal recovery procedure for those cases. A mistaken removal or state-changing controller action can make it harder to understand the array’s condition, so obtain help from the storage vendor or a qualified recovery specialist before proceeding.

  • The system’s device identifier does not map clearly to an enclosure slot.
  • The array status is faulted or unavailable, or the management tool reports failures beyond the configuration’s supported tolerance.
  • A controller reports a foreign or otherwise unfamiliar state and you are unsure whether to import, clear, or take another action.
  • You cannot verify a backup and the data is important.
  • The replacement or rebuild procedure does not match the controller, operating system, or filesystem managing the storage.

What to expect after the system reports healthy

When the management tool reports that the rebuild or resilver has finished and the array or pool is healthy, the immediate redundancy-restoration operation is complete according to that system’s status. Keep an independent backup; the fact that an array is healthy does not turn it into a backup. Retain the recorded event details if you need the vendor to investigate the failed device or the reason for the degraded state.
