If a person relies on an electricity-powered medical device to stay alive, treat a power outage as an emergency: contact emergency services immediately, follow the person’s care plan, and report the affected device, remaining power, and location. For any other device interruption, use its manual and care-team instructions, and do not connect an unverified battery or generator. Keep equipment dry, notify your utility and fire department, and move to an alternate care location if power cannot be restored safely.
What to do first when the power goes out
Start with the person’s immediate safety—not with troubleshooting the device. The FDA says, “If you depend on your device to keep you alive, seek emergency services immediately.” Tell responders which device is affected, how much backup power remains, where the person is, and what the individual care plan says. Follow that plan while help is arranged; this guide is not a substitute for device-specific or clinical instructions. FDA medical-device emergency guidance
Be specific when explaining the situation: identify the device and whether it is still operating on backup power, and share the person’s location and relevant care-plan instructions. If the power is running low, say so rather than waiting until the backup is exhausted. Keep the device and its supplies with the person if you need to relocate, following the care plan and responder instructions.

- If the device has a manufacturer-approved battery backup already connected, use it according to the manual and monitor its status.
- Do not assume a general-purpose power bank, battery, or generator will work. A wrong power source, connector, or setup may fail to run the device as required.
- Keep the device, power supply, and cords dry. Do not plug in wet equipment or a wet cord. If circuits or equipment are wet, the FDA advises turning off power at the main breaker. Have damaged equipment assessed by its manufacturer or distributor before using it again.
- If the person uses oxygen, use battery-powered flashlights or lanterns for light—not gas lights or torches, which create a fire risk.
How to prepare backup power for a specific device
Make an equipment and care-plan inventory
List each device that depends on electricity, including accessories and supplies that may be essential to its operation. Separately identify medicines and supplies that need controlled temperatures. For each device, ask the care team and manufacturer what happens if power fails during use or treatment, whether the device supports a battery or generator, what adapters are required, and where to obtain approved backup supplies. Requirements differ by device, so a backup that works for one item may not work for another. The FDA’s emergency-planning guidance recommends gathering information for each device; the CDC also advises checking the manual or manufacturer for power-source compatibility.

Keep the important details together with the emergency plan: the device’s instructions, the care team’s contact information, backup-power instructions, and the location of needed supplies. Ask what the person should do if power fails during a treatment—not just what power source can be connected. This helps distinguish a technical backup option from a clinically appropriate plan.
Choose and check a backup source
There is no universal backup battery, power station, or generator for medical equipment. Before buying or connecting anything, confirm the device’s voltage, wattage, connectors, and permitted power sources with its manufacturer. Check expected runtime at the device’s actual load rather than relying on a headline capacity, and consider how the equipment will be recharged, whether replacement batteries are available, and whether the setup can be moved during an evacuation. A “portable power station for medical device backup” is only a useful search phrase if the particular unit is confirmed compatible with the device and its clinical plan.
Compare possible backup arrangements on more than capacity. Confirm the required electrical specifications and connectors, how long the source is expected to run the device at its actual load, how it can be recharged, and whether replacement batteries will be available. Also consider whether the source can be operated safely where it will be used and whether it is practical to take along if evacuation is needed. A manual alternative or alternate care site may be more dependable than a power source that is incompatible, unsafe, or difficult to move. The device manufacturer and care team should confirm the technical and clinical parts of the plan before you rely on it.

- Device-compatible battery: Confirm the exact model and accessories the device accepts, the expected operating time, and how to keep the battery charged.
- Generator: Use only if the device manufacturer permits it and the generator can be operated safely outdoors. Confirm the connection and power requirements before an outage.
- Manual alternative or alternate care site: Ask the clinical team whether any manual alternative is appropriate for the individual, or identify a place where the needed treatment and power are available. Do not improvise a treatment method.
CDC says people experience about four hours of power loss per year on average. That population-level figure does not predict how long a particular outage will last, so it is not a safe basis for sizing a backup. CDC power-outage preparedness

Coordinate with the utility, responders, and support network
Keep devices charged while electricity is available. Tell the electric utility and fire department that the household has medical equipment needing power. As the FDA puts it, “Notify your electric company and fire department to let them know you have a medical device that needs power (e.g., ventilator, apnea monitor).” Ask the utility whether it offers medical-needs assistance or priority restoration, but confirm eligibility and services locally; they vary by location and are not a guarantee of uninterrupted electricity. FDA emergency guidance
Make these contacts before an outage if possible, and do not rely on a priority-restoration program as the only backup plan. Its availability, eligibility, and services vary by location. Choose an alternate place to go if the outage continues or evacuation becomes necessary, and arrange a support person outside the affected area who can help coordinate. Include transport needs and device supplies in the plan. Review the plan with the care team so that the destination and backup steps fit the person’s treatment needs. FEMA guidance for caregivers

Generator safety for medical equipment
A generator can supply backup power only when it is compatible with the medical device and can be run safely. FEMA says to place generators outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings. Never run one inside a home, garage, or other enclosed space. Use outdoor-rated extension cords when needed, as recommended in CDC preparedness guidance, and follow the generator manufacturer’s safety instructions. Do not connect a medical device until its manufacturer’s requirements have been verified. FEMA power-outage guidance · CDC power-outage preparedness
Safe placement and device compatibility are separate checks: an outdoor generator is not automatically an appropriate power source for a particular medical device. Confirm the device’s permitted source and connection requirements in advance. If those requirements are unknown, do not improvise a connection during an outage; follow the care plan and contact the manufacturer or care team.
Protect refrigerated medicines and supplies
Plan before an outage for every medicine or supply whose labeling requires refrigeration. During an outage, keep the refrigerator or freezer closed as much as possible. If something must be moved, maintain its required temperature using ice or dry ice as directed, and follow the product labeling. Do not assume a cooler or a particular amount of cold time will keep a medicine safe; the required range and stability depend on the product. FDA guidance on medicines and disaster preparedness

If a medicine may have been outside its specified temperature range, contact a pharmacist, health care provider, or the manufacturer before deciding whether it can still be used. If it is life-sustaining and no replacement is immediately available, the FDA says it may need to be used until a new supply is available; seek professional advice and arrange replacement as soon as possible. Plan for dialysis and interrupted treatment
For someone receiving dialysis, a power outage may coincide with closed roads or an inaccessible clinic. Keep contact details for the regular and an alternate dialysis center current and available, and maintain a medicine list and emergency supply. Tell shelter staff about dialysis needs if you evacuate or seek shelter. CDC also advises registering with water and power companies for special restoration priority; local programs and eligibility should be confirmed with the utility. CDC dialysis emergency guidance
Home dialysis patients should get an individual backup plan from their clinical team. CDC notes that some patients may be able to use manual exchanges or a small backup generator, but these are not universal instructions; whether either is appropriate depends on the person’s treatment and equipment. CDC dialysis guidance
Keep the dialysis center’s contact information current so it can be reached when roads or clinic access are affected. Know both the regular and alternate center contacts, and include the medicine list and emergency supply in the plan. If going to a shelter, tell staff about the person’s dialysis needs; do not assume the shelter can provide treatment or equipment without checking.

What to check when power returns
Before relying on equipment after an interruption, check its settings and operation against the manual and care plan. The FDA warns that some devices may reset to a default mode when power is interrupted. If the device is wet, appears damaged, or behaves unexpectedly, contact its manufacturer or distributor before using it again. FDA medical-device guidance
Also review any refrigerated medicine or supply that may have warmed, using its labeling and professional advice rather than appearance alone. If backup batteries or emergency supplies were used, recharge or replace them and update the plan so the household is ready for another interruption.
A restored power supply does not by itself confirm that a device’s settings are correct or that a medicine remained within its required storage conditions. Check the relevant instructions and seek advice when the equipment or product may have been affected. If anything behaved unexpectedly or sustained water damage, do not rely on it until the manufacturer or distributor has assessed it.
