Start with the console out of its dock. Disconnect the Nintendo Switch AC adapter (model HAC-002) from both the wall and the console or dock for 30 seconds, then hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds. Reconnect the adapter directly to the console and a wall outlet, press POWER once, and leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before trying again.
If the charging icon never appears, the battery level still does not rise after several hours, the adapter is damaged, or the console’s USB-C connector is visibly damaged, stop troubleshooting and arrange Nintendo service. The procedure below applies to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED; Nintendo Switch 2 has separate charging guidance.
Use this first-response checklist
- Undock the console. Remove it from the dock so the basic test uses as few components as possible.
- Reset the charging setup. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall and from the console or dock. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.
- Force a shutdown. With the console disconnected, hold its POWER button for 20 seconds, then release it.
- Connect the specified adapter directly. Plug the Nintendo Switch AC adapter marked
MOD. HAC-002into a wall outlet and the USB-C connector on the bottom of the console. - Try another wall outlet. If the first outlet produces no response, move the adapter to a different known-working outlet.
- Press POWER once. A normally responding system should show the battery charging icon. If the battery is almost empty, the screen can remain black and the icon may appear only briefly in the top-left corner.
- Wait before repeating the power test. Leave a deeply depleted console connected for at least 30 minutes, then press POWER once more.
This sequence addresses the most common causes without opening the console or forcing anything into its connector. Do the steps in order; changing several variables at once makes it harder to tell whether the adapter, outlet, dock, or console is responsible.

A nearly depleted battery may not have enough energy to keep the display on. Nintendo’s charging guidance notes that the charging indicator can appear only briefly while the screen stays off. That behavior does not by itself prove that the battery or display has failed.
#1 Best Overall
- Plug in the AC adapter and power your Nintendo Switch system from any 120-volt outlet. The AC adapter also allows you to recharge the battery, even while you play.
Give the console a continuous 30-minute charge before judging the result. Do not repeatedly press POWER during that period, because each start attempt consumes some of the small amount of energy being restored. After 30 minutes, press POWER once. If the system starts, keep it connected until the battery is substantially charged before playing.
Confirm that the charging path is correct
Identify the adapter
Look at the label on the power brick. Nintendo specifies the Switch AC adapter marked MOD. HAC-002 for this procedure. A missing, substituted, or damaged adapter changes the diagnosis. Nintendo recommends a licensed Switch AC adapter for best performance; unlicensed products have not been tested and evaluated by Nintendo and can have compatibility problems. That guidance does not establish that every third-party USB-C adapter is unsafe, but it does mean an unknown adapter is a poor basis for troubleshooting.
Connect directly to the console
For the first test, connect HAC-002 straight to the console’s bottom USB-C port. Charging through the dock adds the dock and its connections to the path, so direct charging is the clearer diagnostic test. Once direct charging works, you can check dock charging separately.
Check the outlet and connections
Push the adapter firmly into the wall outlet and console, without twisting the USB-C plug. Try a second wall outlet if the first produces no icon. Look for a connector that feels unusually loose, but do not wiggle the plug aggressively; movement can worsen a damaged port.

Inspect the adapter without using it as a repair tool
Examine the entire cable and both connectors under good light. A frayed or split sheath, exposed wire, crushed section, severe kink, or loose connector is a reason to stop using that adapter. Do not tape over exposed conductors or continue testing a cord that is visibly damaged.
If the adapter looks intact but the console remains unresponsive, test the same adapter with another Nintendo USB-C product if one is available. Nintendo gives examples such as a Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Stand, or the Switch dock. Disconnect the adapter from the console before making this test and reconnect it only after the other device is unplugged.
- Adapter powers another Nintendo product: the adapter is at least delivering power to that product, so a console-side problem becomes more likely if the Switch still shows no icon.
- Adapter powers nothing: the adapter, its cable, the outlet, or the test device may be at fault. Try a second outlet and, if possible, a known-good HAC-002 adapter before concluding that the console is defective.
This cross-check is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that every device draws power in the same way. It cannot repair a damaged console connector.
Inspect the Switch USB-C port safely
Look into the console’s bottom USB-C connector for visible damage, such as bent metal. Keep the inspection visual. Do not insert a pin, tool, compressed-air nozzle, or other object to scrape or straighten the port, and do not force the plug past resistance.

A visibly damaged console connector needs service. A different charger cannot restore a bent or broken port, and repeated insertion can turn a minor alignment problem into a larger connector or board failure. If you see debris but cannot remove it without contact with the internal pins, leave the port alone and arrange professional service.
Allow enough time for a full charge
Nintendo estimates approximately three hours for a full charge. That is a general charging estimate, not a promise that every empty battery will display a percentage immediately. A console that has been deeply depleted still needs the initial 30-minute recovery period before a meaningful power-on test.
Once the console displays the charging icon, leave it connected for several hours. If the battery level does not increase to full after that period, repeat the adapter, outlet, and connector checks once. Persistent failure meets Nintendo’s stated threshold for seeking service, particularly when the icon never appears.

- Charge acceptance failure: the icon does not appear, the console remains unable to start after the reset and 30-minute wait, or the battery percentage does not rise while connected.
- Reduced runtime: the console reaches full charge but runs for less time than it did when new.
Nintendo says battery capacity gradually declines. After about 800 charge cycles, Nintendo says a battery may retain about 80% of the battery life of a new system and describes that decline as normal. Runtime also varies by Switch model, the software being used, and functions active during play. The 800-cycle figure is Nintendo’s own estimate, not an independent laboratory result, and it should not be applied to Switch 2.
A battery that charges to full but drains sooner is therefore a different service question from a console that cannot accept charge at all. Do not keep changing chargers when the actual symptom is expected capacity loss.
When to test the dock
After direct-to-console charging succeeds, reconnect HAC-002 to the dock and place the console in it. Nintendo documents charging through the dock when the HAC-002 adapter is connected to the dock. If the console charges directly but not while docked, check that the adapter is fully seated in the dock, the dock is connected to the wall, and the console sits all the way down on the dock’s USB-C connection.
For a console that will not charge by either method, return to the direct connection for diagnosis. The dock should not be used to mask a suspected console-port or adapter problem.

Know when home troubleshooting is over
Seek Nintendo service when any of these conditions remains after the reset, direct connection, outlet test, and adequate charging time:
- The battery charging icon never appears.
- The console still will not start after at least 30 minutes connected directly with the specified adapter.
- The battery level does not reach full after several hours of charging.
- The adapter is known to work with another Nintendo USB-C product, but the console does not charge.
- The console’s USB-C connector has bent metal or other visible damage.
- The adapter cable or plug is damaged and no known-good replacement resolves the problem.
Nintendo advises including the AC adapter when sending the console for service so the complete charging setup can be tested. Do not open the console or attempt a port replacement unless you are qualified to perform board-level electronics repair; unauthorized disassembly can create additional damage and may affect service eligibility.
Regional service availability, warranty coverage, prices, and turnaround times vary. Confirm the current terms with Nintendo for your country or region before shipping the console.

Should you replace the charger?
Check your existing adapter before buying anything. A replacement is justified when the original HAC-002 is missing, visibly damaged, or fails the outlet and cross-device tests. Match the model designation and use a licensed Nintendo Switch AC adapter. Do not choose solely by a USB-C plug’s appearance: physical fit does not prove that an adapter is appropriate for the console.
If a known-good, correctly specified adapter produces the same failure, buying additional chargers is unlikely to solve a damaged console connector or internal charging fault. Move to service instead.
Model and scope notes
| System | Applies to this procedure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Yes | Use the HAC-002 adapter and direct USB-C test described above. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | Yes | It charges through its own USB-C port; it does not use a television dock. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED | Yes | Direct charging with HAC-002 is the clearest first diagnostic step; dock charging can be checked afterward. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | No | Nintendo provides separate charging guidance; check the documentation for that model instead of applying these adapter recommendations. |
Common mistakes that can prolong the problem
- Testing only through the dock: this leaves the dock and its connectors unverified. Start with direct charging.
- Trying to power on immediately: a deeply depleted battery may need the full 30-minute wait.
- Using an unidentified USB-C charger: the connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm the HAC-002 designation or use a licensed Switch adapter.
- Forcing a plug into the port: resistance or visible bent metal calls for service, not more pressure.
- Confusing short runtime with failure to charge: gradual capacity loss is expected over battery cycles; it is not the same symptom as a missing charging icon.
- Continuing with a damaged cord: replace or service a frayed, split, or exposed-wire adapter rather than taping it and carrying on.
A practical decision path
- If the console is docked, remove it and perform the 30-second adapter disconnect and 20-second POWER hold.
- Use HAC-002 directly from a wall outlet to the console. Press POWER once and watch for the icon.
- If the screen is black, leave it connected for 30 minutes before another power attempt.
- If there is still no response, try another outlet, inspect the adapter, and test it with another Nintendo USB-C product.
- Inspect the console port visually. Stop immediately if it is visibly damaged.
- If the icon never appears or the battery still does not reach full after several hours, arrange Nintendo service and include the adapter.
Bottom line
Most safe first steps are simple: undock, reset the adapter, force a shutdown, connect HAC-002 directly, and allow at least 30 minutes for a deeply depleted battery. A full charge normally takes about three hours. If those checks do not produce a charging icon or a rising battery level, or if the USB-C connector is damaged, further home experimentation is unlikely to help; have Nintendo evaluate the console and adapter together.
