Restart the laptop, install available updates, and retest with only the apps you need open. Then check which programs are using system resources and whether airflow is blocked. A warm case alone does not prove a fault, but persistent sluggishness or unusual heat after these checks is a reason to contact the manufacturer or seller promptly—especially while your purchase’s return period may still be open.
First, distinguish normal warmth from a problem
Laptops can become warm during ordinary use, particularly when several apps are active or a task demands sustained processing. Apple states that “Your Mac laptop computer can get warm during normal use.” That guidance is specific to Mac laptops, but it illustrates why warmth by itself is not enough to diagnose a defect. The sources here do not establish one temperature threshold that defines overheating for every laptop.
Pay attention to the circumstances: Does the laptop get hot while sitting idle or doing light work, or only during demanding tasks? Do fans keep running for a long time? Is the machine also unusually slow, shutting down, or behaving erratically? These details help separate a temporary workload from a problem that merits support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare like with like when you retest. For example, note whether the laptop is warm with one necessary app open on a clear surface, then whether the same behavior appears after you reopen your usual apps. If heat and fan activity rise only during demanding work, that points to a different pattern than warmth that persists during light use. It does not by itself identify a cause, but it gives you a useful observation to share with support.

Check the work surface and airflow
Use the laptop on a stable surface and make sure its ventilation is not obstructed. For Mac laptops, Apple specifically advises against using the computer on a bed, pillow, or under bedding; those surfaces can impede ventilation. Apple recommends an ambient temperature of 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C), keeping objects off the keyboard, and using Apple-authorized power adapters. Follow the ventilation instructions for your own model as well; manufacturers’ designs and guidance can differ.
An open-design adjustable laptop stand is an optional workspace accessory if it helps you keep the device on a stable, ventilated surface. It is not a guaranteed cooling fix, and there is no basis here to claim that a stand will lower internal temperatures.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Restart once. Save your work, restart the laptop, and test again before opening all your usual apps. A restart can clear a temporary issue; it does not establish that the underlying cause is fixed.
- Close what you are not using. Quit unneeded apps and browser tabs. Retest with only the work you need open so you can see whether performance improves under a lighter load.
- Install available operating-system updates. On Windows, check Windows Update for available system updates. Microsoft also recommends considering optional driver updates where appropriate. Use guidance for the Windows version installed on your device.
- Check the laptop’s workload. Use Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on a Mac to identify apps or processes using unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources. Close only apps you recognize and do not need. If one process remains busy, note its name before taking further action; do not end unfamiliar system processes just to reduce a number.
- Check ventilation again. Move the laptop to a stable surface, away from bedding or other obstructions, and see whether the fans and heat change during the same light workload.
These checks are deliberately reversible. Change one thing at a time where practical, then observe whether the same symptom returns. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped instead of making several changes and losing track of what mattered. You do not need to dismantle a new computer to perform these first steps.
If a Windows laptop is slow, check resources, storage, and startup apps
Microsoft identifies limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, and hardware limits among the possible causes of a slow Windows PC. Sluggishness alone does not prove that a new laptop is defective. Work that exceeds the device’s capabilities can also be slow, and several contributing factors may need to be addressed.
Use Task Manager to find a sustained load
Open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk use while the laptop feels slow. Sort by the resource that appears busiest and look for an app you recognize that is consuming a large share of it. Close the app if you do not need it, then test again. A busy process may be doing legitimate work; the name and timing matter more than any single reading.
Look for a pattern rather than treating one momentary reading as a diagnosis. If the laptop feels slow at the same time one familiar app is using a lot of a resource, close that app if it is safe to do so and see whether the slowdown changes. If no obvious app accounts for the problem, or high use continues during light work, record what Task Manager shows and include it in your support request.

Review storage and startup activity
Check how much storage remains and free space if the drive is nearly full. Uninstall apps you do not use, and disable only nonessential startup apps so they do not automatically run whenever Windows starts. Avoid removing software you do not recognize until you have confirmed what it does.
Startup activity is worth checking because programs that launch automatically can add background work even when you have not opened them for the current task. Be selective: disable items you know are not needed at startup, rather than turning off everything in the list. Recheck performance after a restart to see whether the change makes a difference.
Windows Security’s Device performance & health report can provide available storage, battery, software, and system recommendations. In Windows, open Windows Security > Device performance & health. Microsoft notes that this report may be unavailable on organization-managed devices.
Scan for malware if the slowdown persists
If performance remains poor after updates, a restart, and a review of apps and storage, run a malware scan with Windows Security. A scan is one troubleshooting step, not proof that malware caused the problem. If the laptop is managed by an employer or school, follow the organization’s security process.
Windows power mode can trade battery life for speed
When maximum performance matters, Windows’ Best performance power mode may help. Microsoft warns: “Selecting Best performance increases power consumption. On laptops, this setting will drain the battery more quickly and may cause the device to run warmer.” Use it only when the trade-off suits the task. Because it can increase warmth, it is not an overheating remedy.

If the laptop is already getting unusually warm, do not treat Best performance as the next cooling step. It changes the balance between performance and power consumption, and the battery and warmth trade-off may be unwelcome. Return to ordinary troubleshooting—checking workload, ventilation, updates, and persistent symptoms—instead.

For a warm Mac, inspect CPU activity
If a Mac remains warm during light work or its fans run for a long time, open Activity Monitor and inspect CPU activity for a process creating a significant load. If an app you recognize is responsible, save your work and quit it if you do not need it; restart the Mac if appropriate, then check whether the behavior returns.
Apple cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose hardware issues. If operating-temperature problems persist, Apple advises contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Use clean boot only to investigate a Windows startup conflict
A clean boot can help determine whether a startup app or service is causing a Windows problem, but it is a diagnostic step rather than a routine speed-up. Microsoft warns that functionality may be temporarily reduced during clean-boot troubleshooting and provides instructions for returning to normal startup.

If the laptop belongs to an organization, ask its IT administrator before changing startup or service settings.
Because a clean boot temporarily changes how Windows starts, it is best reserved for a suspected startup software conflict after simpler checks. Do not leave the laptop in a troubleshooting configuration as though it were a permanent fix: use Microsoft’s instructions to return to normal startup once you have finished testing.
When to contact the manufacturer or seller
Contact the manufacturer or seller promptly if poor performance or abnormal heat continues after basic checks, especially if the laptop is new. For a Mac, Apple recommends contacting Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider when operating-temperature issues persist. For other brands, use the manufacturer’s support channel or the seller’s return process.

Before reaching out, note when the symptoms occur, whether they happen at idle or only during demanding work, which apps are active, whether a resource monitor shows sustained high use, and what you tried. This gives support a clearer starting point without requiring you to open the laptop or attempt a hardware repair.
A concise record can include the steps you took—such as restarting, installing updates, closing apps, and moving the device to a clear surface—and what changed afterward. Also note whether the fans run for a long time, whether the issue returns after a restart, and whether a particular app or process appears to be responsible. The goal is not to diagnose a hardware fault yourself; it is to help support distinguish a workload or software pattern from a problem that persists under light use.
Check the return window and warranty terms for your particular purchase. They depend on the country, model, seller, and purchase date; there is no single return period or warranty duration that applies to every new laptop. Keep your receipt or order confirmation and avoid opening the device or inserting objects into its vents.
When deciding whether to keep troubleshooting or ask for help, weigh five observations: whether the symptoms happen at idle or only under demanding work; whether Task Manager or Activity Monitor shows a sustained high-load process; whether placement or blocked airflow is involved; whether the problem persists after an update and restart; and how quickly the manufacturer or seller can evaluate a new device. Persistent symptoms after basic checks are a sensible point to ask for that evaluation, rather than continuing with increasingly invasive experiments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for a new laptop to feel warm?
It can be. Apple says Mac laptops can get warm during normal use, and warmth alone does not establish a defect. Consider what the laptop is doing and whether it is on a stable, ventilated surface. Persistent warmth during light work or fans running for a long time is a reason to investigate and, if it continues, contact support.
What should I check first if a Windows laptop is slow?
Restart it, install available Windows updates, close apps and tabs you do not need, and check Task Manager for unusually high CPU, memory, or disk use. Then review storage and nonessential startup apps. If the slowdown persists, run a Windows Security malware scan and check Device performance & health for available recommendations.
Should I turn on Best performance mode to stop overheating?
No. Best performance may help when maximum performance matters, but Microsoft says it increases power consumption, drains a laptop battery faster, and may make the device run warmer. It is a performance trade-off, not an overheating fix.

When should I contact the seller or manufacturer?
Contact them promptly if poor performance or abnormal heat continues after basic checks, especially while the device is new. Note whether symptoms occur at idle or during demanding work, any sustained high-use process, the steps you tried, and whether airflow or placement changed the symptoms. Check the return and warranty terms for your specific seller, country, model, and purchase date.
Can I use a temperature-monitoring app or open the laptop to check it?
Apple cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose Mac hardware issues. The guidance here does not call for opening a new laptop or inserting anything into its vents; for persistent problems, contact the manufacturer, seller, or an authorized service provider as appropriate.
The Bottom Line
Start with reversible checks: restart, update, reduce the open workload, inspect resource use, and ensure ventilation is clear. Warmth alone is not proof of failure, but persistent heat or sluggishness after basic checks warrants prompt contact with the manufacturer or seller. Review the return and warranty terms that apply to your specific purchase.
