Stop using the appliance if it presents an immediate hazard, then verify the model and installation against the manual and your order. For a non-dangerous fault, document exactly what happens and contact the seller promptly before opening, modifying or attempting to repair the appliance. Manufacturer support can provide model-specific troubleshooting, while any right to repair, replacement or refund depends on the law where you bought it.
1. Put safety before troubleshooting
Stop using the appliance immediately if you notice smoke, sparking, a burning smell, leakage near electrical parts or another apparent hazard. Follow the manual’s safe shutdown instructions for that model, and do not keep testing it to see whether the symptom goes away. GOV.UK consumer product-safety guidance states: “If something does not seem right, stop using the product and contact the seller or the marketplace.”
Do not remove covers, bypass safety devices or open the appliance while it is under warranty or while the cause is unknown. A refrigerator, cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, heater or other appliance can have model-specific electrical, gas, water-pressure or heat risks that cannot be assessed safely from a general description.

Some apparent faults are delivery or setup errors rather than a failed component. Before changing settings, compare the appliance with the paperwork and the instructions supplied with it.

- Check the model number, capacity, colour, voltage or fuel type and included accessories against the order confirmation.
- Check the product label and serial number. Photograph them for your records.
- Look for visible shipping damage, missing parts, dents, cracked panels or seals that do not sit correctly.
- Read the installation and first-use sections of the manual, including any requirements for ventilation, clearance, levelling, drainage, water supply or electrical connection.
- Confirm that the controls, display symbols and error messages match the manual for your exact model, not a similar-looking appliance.
Do not infer a setup procedure from another model or from a generic online video. If a qualified installer was required, record who installed the appliance and when, and ask the seller or manufacturer whether installation must be inspected before service.
3. Decide whether the problem is dangerous, minor or unresolved
Classifying the symptom helps you choose the next step without guessing at the cause.
Immediate hazard
Smoke, sparking, a burning odour, uncontrolled heat, significant water leakage near electrical components or any sign of fire risk means stop using the product and seek the appropriate emergency or building-safety help for your location. Do not attempt an internal repair.
Non-dangerous performance problem
A cycle that stops, poor cooling, unusual noise, an error code, weak heating or a control that does not respond may be suitable for support triage. Leave the appliance switched off if the manual tells you to, and avoid repeated restarts that could worsen the fault or erase useful diagnostic information.

Question about normal operation
Some noises, pauses, temperature changes and first-use odours are described as normal in certain manuals. Check the exact model’s instructions before deciding that a behaviour is a defect. If the manual does not explain it, ask the seller or manufacturer rather than assuming it is safe.
4. Create a clear fault record
Write down what happened while the details are fresh. This is practical documentation, not a legal requirement, but it prevents repeated explanations and helps support staff decide whether the product needs collection or inspection.
- Model and serial number, purchase date, seller and delivery date.
- The exact symptom, including what the appliance was doing immediately beforehand.
- When the problem occurs: on every use, only on a particular cycle, after a set time or intermittently.
- Any displayed code, warning light, sound or message, copied exactly from the screen.
- Photos or video of the display, damage, leaking area or installation, provided this can be done safely.
- Steps already taken, such as checking the manual or a user-accessible filter, and the result.
Keep the order confirmation, invoice, delivery record, warranty booklet, manual, photographs and every support message together. If you pay for transport, collection or another return-related service, retain those receipts as well.
5. Contact the seller before attempting a repair
For a new appliance with a non-emergency problem, contact the business that sold it and ask for its fault-reporting and return process. The US Federal Trade Commission advises contacting the seller first and writing to the manufacturer if the seller does not resolve the issue. Use a written channel when possible so the date and description are recorded.

- State that the appliance is new, identify the order and model, and describe the fault in specific terms.
- Say whether the appliance is currently disconnected or unused because of a safety concern.
- Ask whether the seller wants photographs, an error-code video, an authorised technician’s inspection or collection.
- Ask what remedy is being proposed: troubleshooting, repair, replacement, refund or another option.
- Confirm who will arrange and pay for collection, inspection, installation or return transport, and whether you must keep the packaging.
- Request the next action and a reference number in writing.
Do not assume that a manufacturer’s telephone suggestion overrides the seller’s process. Follow only user-accessible checks that the manual or support team expressly identifies. New Zealand Consumer Protection warns that if you or a repairer try to fix the appliance first, you might lose the right to a refund, repair or replacement under its consumer guarantees.
6. Use manufacturer support for model-specific help
Manufacturer support can interpret an error code, confirm whether a behaviour is normal, identify an authorised service provider and explain warranty procedures. Give support the model, serial number, purchase date, installation details and the fault record you made.
Ask whether a proposed action is a user-level check or an intervention that requires an authorised technician. Do not drill, rewire, alter software, replace internal parts or use non-specified consumables merely because a forum or video suggests it. Tell the seller about any manufacturer case number so the two records are connected.

A defect may lead to repair, replacement, refund, price reduction or another remedy, but the result depends on the place of purchase, the seriousness of the fault, whether it can be fixed and the applicable law. A seller may be allowed to inspect the product first; in some places the business chooses between repair and replacement for a minor issue, while a serious problem can give the buyer more choice.

These examples are not interchangeable. A purchase made across a border, from a marketplace, or from a private seller can involve different rules from a purchase made directly from a local business.
8. Keep statutory rights separate from a manufacturer warranty
A manufacturer warranty is a written promise with its own duration, exclusions, registration rules and service process. Consumer-law guarantees are rights imposed by the law of the place of purchase. They can overlap, but one does not automatically replace the other.
For example, New Zealand guidance says some Consumer Guarantees Act protections can continue beyond a manufacturer warranty. In the United States, the FTC directs buyers to check the written warranty and applicable law. Do not conclude that a warranty expiry ends every possible remedy, or that a warranty guarantees a particular outcome, without checking the relevant local rules.
9. Plan returns, inspection and installation logistics
Ask the seller these questions before agreeing to a remedy:

- Will the appliance be collected, or must you deliver it?
- Who disconnects gas, water or electrical connections, and must that work be done by a qualified person?
- Will the seller inspect the product before approving a repair, replacement or refund?
- Who pays reasonable transport, collection, inspection and reinstallation costs?
- Is the original box required, and what should you do if it was discarded?
- What happens to food, laundry, dishes or other contents affected by the failure?
In Australia, ACCC guidance specifically addresses reasonable costs for returning a confirmed faulty product and recognises that large or installed appliances may need business-arranged collection. Elsewhere, cost rules can differ, so obtain the seller’s instructions in writing before paying for a courier or technician.
10. If the seller refuses or stops responding
Send a concise written follow-up that lists the purchase details, fault, dates of earlier contact and remedy requested. Give the seller the response period it specifies, if that period is reasonable and documented. Avoid threatening a remedy that your local law may not provide.
If the refusal continues, contact the official consumer-protection authority for the place of purchase. Provide your evidence file: proof of purchase, photographs, fault notes, warranty terms, support transcripts and receipts. A regulator, ombudsman or approved dispute-resolution service can explain the process available in that jurisdiction. Do not assume that a process described for New Zealand, the UK, the US, Australia or the EU applies to a different country.

11. A practical decision checklist
- Stop and assess safety. If there is an immediate hazard, stop using the appliance and follow the model’s safe shutdown guidance.
- Verify the product. Compare the model, label, accessories and installation with the order and manual.
- Record the fault. Capture the serial number, symptom, timing, codes, photographs and steps already taken.
- Preserve evidence. Keep invoices, delivery records, packaging information, messages and return-cost receipts.
- Contact the seller. Ask for its documented process and the remedy it is offering.
- Contact manufacturer support. Request model-specific, user-safe troubleshooting and an authorised service route.
- Do not modify the appliance. Wait for written direction before opening, rewiring or replacing internal parts.
- Escalate locally. Use the official consumer-protection body for the country or region where the purchase occurred if the seller does not resolve the issue.
What not to do
- Do not keep operating an appliance that smokes, sparks, smells of burning or leaks dangerously.
- Do not rely on a generic manual, video or forum post for an unknown model.
- Do not discard the evidence of purchase or support correspondence.
- Do not pay for a return or repair without asking who is responsible for the cost.
- Do not assume a manufacturer warranty is the only protection available.
- Do not assume another country’s refund deadline, remedy choice or collection rule applies to your transaction.
Bottom line
For a new appliance that is unsafe, stop using it. For a non-dangerous fault, verify the setup, document the symptom and contact the seller before attempting any repair; involve manufacturer support for model-specific guidance. Preserve every record and confirm collection, inspection and cost arrangements in writing. Whether you receive a repair, replacement or refund is determined by the facts and the consumer rules where you bought the appliance.
