A new Dell PC that feels slow is not automatically defective. Start by identifying when the slowdown happens, restart Windows, and run Dell’s hardware diagnostics before changing drivers, removing software, or reinstalling Windows. The sequence below separates hardware faults from startup load, application problems, malware indicators, and low storage while keeping your data safe.

1. Identify exactly what is slow

Use the symptom to choose the first useful check. “Slow” can mean a long boot, delayed clicks, one application that hangs, web pages that take a long time to load, or complete freezes. Record what you observe after a fresh restart and whether the problem appears immediately or only after you open several programs.

Symptom What to note Best first comparison
Slow startup How long Windows takes to reach the desktop; whether the delay occurs before or after sign-in Startup-app review and Dell diagnostics
One slow application Application name, task that triggers the delay, and whether other programs remain responsive Update that application and test with other programs closed
Slow browsing Whether all sites are affected, whether other devices use the same connection normally, and whether the browser has many tabs or extensions open Close extra tabs and compare another browser or a fresh browser window
General lag Whether typing, window movement, audio, and file operations all respond slowly Restart, check diagnostics, then compare normal mode with Safe Mode
Freezing or crashes Any error message, blue screen, unusual noise, or repeatable action before the freeze Record the message and run preboot diagnostics

Open programs and browser tabs consume memory and processing time. Close what you do not need, restart Windows, and test again with only the affected task open. Dell recommends that people who use a PC frequently restart it at least once a week; a restart also clears temporary software states that can make a new installation appear sluggish.

2. Run Dell hardware diagnostics before making major changes

Diagnostics are an early decision point. A passing test does not rule out every intermittent fault or software problem, but a failed test gives you a concrete reason to contact support.

Use SupportAssist from Windows

  1. Connect the PC to power and, if available, the internet.
  2. Open Dell SupportAssist from the Start menu.
  3. Choose the hardware test or scan option and allow the checks to complete without shutting down the PC.
  4. Write down every error code and validation code exactly as displayed.

If a component test fails, stop guessing at software fixes and contact Dell Technical Support with the service tag and the recorded codes. Explain when the problem occurs and which tests failed.

Use the preboot F12 route when Windows or SupportAssist is unavailable

  1. Save any work, shut down, and turn the PC on.
  2. At the Dell logo, repeatedly press F12.
  3. Select Diagnostics from the one-time boot menu.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts, note the result, and record any error and validation codes.

This route is useful when Windows will not load reliably or when the SupportAssist application cannot run. A clean result means you should continue with software isolation rather than assuming the PC has no possible hardware issue.

3. Check startup programs and background load

Applications that launch at sign-in can consume memory, processor time, and disk activity before you open anything. Review them, but disable only software you recognize as unnecessary. Do not disable antivirus or antimalware protection merely to make startup appear faster.

Windows 11

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Review each entry’s status and startup impact.
  4. Select a nonessential, recognized application and choose Disable. Leave security software enabled.
  5. Restart and test the original symptom.

Windows 10

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and choose Task Manager.
  2. If necessary, select More details, then open the Startup tab.
  3. Select a nonessential program you recognize and choose Disable.
  4. Restart and compare the result.

You can also reach startup controls through Windows Settings; labels vary by Windows version. If you do not know what an entry does, leave it enabled until you identify it through the application’s publisher or Dell’s software documentation. Disabling an unknown item can remove a useful driver utility or synchronization service without fixing the real problem.

4. Update Windows, Dell drivers, and the affected application

A newly purchased PC may still be completing updates, and an older application may not behave correctly with the installed Windows build. Install updates through official Windows and Dell support channels for your exact model, service tag, and operating system. Driver names and menu locations differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 and between Dell models, so do not install a driver intended for another system.

When one application is the trigger

Close other programs and check the application publisher for a version compatible with your Windows release. If the slowdown began immediately after an application update, use that publisher’s documented repair or rollback option rather than downloading a replacement from an unverified site.

When the whole system is affected

Install pending Windows updates, restart when Windows requests it, and then obtain applicable Dell driver updates using the PC’s service tag. Give the system time to finish update activity before judging performance; repeated forced shutdowns can interrupt installation and create additional problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare normal Windows with Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Windows with many nonessential drivers and startup programs absent. It is a comparison, not a diagnosis by itself.

  1. Open Settings, go to System (Windows 11) or Update & Security (Windows 10), choose Recovery, and use Advanced startup to restart now.
  2. After the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, then Restart.
  3. Choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen. Use Safe Mode with Networking only when necessary and understand that security protection is reduced while networking is enabled.
  4. Repeat the task that was slow, noting whether the same behavior occurs.

If the issue disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party driver, startup application, or other software is more likely. Update or remove the relevant software one change at a time, and install pending Windows updates. If the issue remains, continue with diagnostics and Windows recovery steps rather than naming a particular failed component. Safe Mode’s display may look different; that is expected.

6. Scan for malware only when the symptoms support it

Unwanted pop-ups, unexplained browser changes, unknown programs, or other suspicious behavior justify a thorough scan with your existing, up-to-date security tool. Allow the scan to finish and follow its quarantine instructions.

Do not install several antivirus or antimalware products at once. They can compete for the same files and resources and may make the PC slower without improving protection. If you already installed overlapping security tools, keep the one you trust and remove the others using their normal uninstall process, then restart and scan again.

7. Check free storage and clean it safely

Very little free space can contribute to sluggish Windows behavior and can prevent updates from completing. In Windows, open Settings and search for Storage. Review the categories that use space and the recommendations before deleting anything.

Windows cleanup options

  • Storage Sense: automate removal of selected temporary items after reviewing its settings.
  • Cleanup recommendations: inspect temporary files, large or unused files, and unused applications before confirming deletion.
  • Disk Cleanup: review the file categories and remove only items you understand.

Do not delete arbitrary folders, recovery partitions, or driver files to create space. A third-party “cleaner” is not required for this troubleshooting sequence. If a large personal file is no longer needed on the PC, copy it to appropriate storage and verify the copy before deleting the original.

8. Use System Restore or reinstall Windows only as recovery steps

System Restore

If the slowdown began after a driver or software change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore can return certain system settings and files to an earlier state. It does not replace personal-file backups and does not guarantee that every application or update will be reversed. Review the restore point and affected programs shown by Windows before confirming.

Windows reinstallation

Reinstallation is a late step for a persistent software problem, not a routine speed tweak. It can permanently remove data. Dell Technologies recommends that you “back up all your personal data to an external storage device” before restoring or reinstalling Windows. Copy documents, photos, browser exports, license information, and any other irreplaceable files, then open several copied files from the external device to verify the backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external USB hard drive can serve as backup storage, but its capacity, connection type, and backup software must suit your PC. No external drive makes Windows itself faster; its role here is protecting data before recovery.

9. Decide when to contact Dell

Contact Dell support promptly when diagnostics produce an error or validation code, the PC repeatedly freezes, it will not start normally, or the problem remains after software isolation. Have the service tag, Windows version, symptom timeline, diagnostic results, and any recent changes ready. For a new PC, warranty or service options may apply, so avoid opening the chassis or replacing parts unless Dell’s instructions and your coverage permit it.

When you contact support, describe the narrowest reproducible symptom: for example, “the system freezes two minutes after sign-in,” rather than only “it is slow.” Include whether the behavior changes in Safe Mode and whether SupportAssist or F12 diagnostics passed. This information helps support choose between driver remediation, system recovery, or hardware service.

Order of operations at a glance

  1. Restart and retest with only necessary apps and tabs open.
  2. Run SupportAssist; if unavailable, use F12 > Diagnostics.
  3. Record error and validation codes and contact Dell if a test fails.
  4. Review startup apps, disabling only recognized nonessential items.
  5. Install Windows, Dell, and affected-application updates.
  6. Compare the symptom in Safe Mode.
  7. Run a thorough malware scan only when suspicious behavior makes it plausible.
  8. Review storage and use Windows cleanup tools carefully.
  9. Try System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists.
  10. Back up personal data before considering Windows reinstallation, then contact Dell with your records.
