A high CO₂ reading is usually a prompt to verify the measurement and examine ventilation—not proof that your home is immediately dangerous. First confirm that the device measures carbon dioxide (CO₂), not carbon monoxide (CO). Then repeat the measurement in a representative location, record occupancy and ventilation, and look for a persistent pattern. Keep certified CO alarms operating: a CO₂ monitor cannot detect or rule out carbon monoxide.
1. Check whether the device measures CO₂ or CO
The labels are easy to confuse, but the gases and the safety response are different. CO₂ is produced by people, combustion and other processes and is commonly used as an indicator of how much outdoor air reaches an occupied space. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous combustion gas that can cause serious illness or death at high concentrations.
Read the display, product label and manual. It should explicitly say CO₂ or carbon dioxide. A display showing “CO,” “CO alarm,” or a carbon-monoxide symbol refers to a different instrument. A consumer air-quality monitor’s CO₂ alert is not a certified, immediate life-safety alarm.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep certified household CO alarms installed according to their instructions, test them, and replace batteries or units as required. If a certified CO alarm sounds, people have symptoms that could indicate CO exposure, or a fuel-burning appliance is suspected, follow the alarm and emergency instructions immediately. Do not spend time troubleshooting the CO₂ monitor first, and never use its reading to rule out CO.

2. Repeat the reading before drawing conclusions
A single number can be distorted by placement, a recent breath, a draft, a door opening or a short-lived occupancy change. Follow the monitor’s operating and warm-up instructions, then collect several readings under normal conditions.
- Let the instrument stabilize. Use the run time specified by the manufacturer. Avoid interpreting the first value shown after powering on or moving the device.
- Place it in the breathing zone. For a typical adult, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes about 3–6 feet above the floor, depending on whether people are sitting or standing.
- Keep it away from direct breath. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises positioning a monitor more than 50 cm from people so exhaled air does not dominate the sample.
- Avoid local drafts and sources. Do not put it directly beside a window, exterior door, HVAC supply or return, fan, cooking appliance, humidifier, or other outlet that gives the sensor unrepresentative air.
- Log the context. Note the time, room, number of occupants, windows and doors, heating or cooling operation, cooking, and the displayed value. Repeat at different times rather than relying on a snapshot.
Use the same location and routine for comparisons. Moving the monitor from a bedroom to a kitchen changes what it is measuring; it does not necessarily show that one device is inconsistent.
3. Understand what the number can—and cannot—tell you
There is no single consumer-monitor value that proves a home is safe or unsafe. The EPA notes that indoor monitor alerts are often manufacturer-set and that widely accepted, indoor health-based concentration limits do not exist for most pollutants. CDC/NIOSH likewise cautions that one concentration target is not appropriate for every space or occupancy pattern.

A rise in an occupied room often means people are adding CO₂ faster than outdoor air is replacing it, but the reading does not identify the cause, diagnose illness, measure every pollutant, or establish infection risk. ASHRAE does not recommend a specific CO₂ concentration as a metric of infection risk or ventilation adequacy.

| Figure or guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Below 800 ppm | CDC/NIOSH presents this as one possible baseline target in a particular ventilation-monitoring approach. It is not a universal household safety limit. |
| More than 110% of a room’s baseline | CDC/NIOSH says this can indicate a potential issue to investigate when airflow and occupancy capacity have not changed. Establish the baseline and context first. |
| Consistently above 1,500 ppm in an occupied room | UK HSE workplace guidance treats this as an indication of poor ventilation. It is workplace guidance, not a residential health threshold, and HSE describes CO₂ as only a broad guide rather than proof of “safe levels.” |
| 50 ppm or ±2% of reading | A NIST consumer-sensor presentation gives this as an illustrative uncertainty estimate for NDIR monitors. It is not a specification for every model, and the presentation’s publication year was not established. |
Use these figures to decide when to investigate a pattern, not to label your home or occupants as safe or unsafe from one display value.
4. Test ventilation safely and observe the response
When a room is occupied and the reading repeatedly rises, test whether additional outdoor air changes the trend. If practical and safe for the weather, security, allergies and building systems, open a window or otherwise increase outdoor-air ventilation. EPA uses opening a window as an example response to a rising classroom reading; in a home, the result depends on the room, weather and ventilation design.
- Record the current CO₂ value and occupancy.
- Make one controlled change, such as opening a window slightly or enabling the system’s outdoor-air mode if the manual permits it.
- Wait through the monitor’s response time while keeping occupancy and other conditions as constant as possible.
- Record whether the value falls, stays flat or continues rising.
- Close or reset the ventilation change and see whether the pattern returns under comparable conditions.
A falling value suggests that the added outdoor air reached the monitor’s location. It does not prove that every room is ventilated equally. A flat result can reflect poor air mixing, a blocked or nonfunctional outdoor-air path, a draft bypassing the sensor, an incorrect setting, or a measurement problem.
Do not disable combustion-appliance safety controls, operate a fuel-burning appliance to “test” the monitor, or create unsafe temperature, humidity or security conditions. If opening windows is not safe or practical, use the building’s normal ventilation controls and seek professional advice.

5. Investigate persistent or multi-room elevation
If representative readings remain high whenever a room is occupied, treat that as a reason to examine ventilation rather than as a diagnosis. Check simple causes before changing equipment.
Confirm the room’s normal use
- Compare an occupied period with an unoccupied period. A fast rise after people enter and a gradual fall after they leave is a different pattern from a high value that never changes.
- Note activities that add CO₂ or alter airflow, including cooking, candles, fireplaces, gas appliances, parties, closed doors and overnight sleeping.
- Check whether several rooms show similar behavior. A single-room issue points toward local airflow or placement; multiple rooms suggest a system-wide or building-envelope issue.
Check the ventilation system
- Verify that supply and exhaust fans, timers and controls are actually running when expected.
- Inspect accessible grilles and filters for blockage, but do not assume a clean particle filter supplies outdoor air.
- Make sure furniture, curtains or stored items are not covering grilles or undercutting doors needed for transfer air.
- Review recent changes such as renovations, weatherization, a new range hood, altered ductwork or a different HVAC operating mode.
A monitor cannot determine whether a fan is delivering its rated airflow, whether ducts are connected correctly, or whether air is short-circuiting between supply and exhaust. If the issue persists, affects several rooms, or coincides with condensation, odors or comfort problems, a qualified HVAC or ventilation professional can inspect airflow and system operation. Give them your time-stamped readings and occupancy notes.
6. Do not expect a standard air purifier to remove CO₂
Typical HEPA and other particle filters capture particles; they do not remove carbon dioxide from room air. ASHRAE describes CO₂ removal as requiring sorption-type air-cleaning processes. Running a conventional purifier may reduce particulate pollution while leaving the CO₂ value unchanged.

7. Account for sensor limitations and calibration
Low-cost monitors differ in accuracy, precision, calibration behavior and operating range. Indoor results can be affected by warm-up time, temperature, humidity, processing algorithms and other contaminants. A higher price or an app connection does not automatically make a device more accurate.
Read the manual for calibration intervals, allowable environment, service life and any automatic-baseline feature. Some models display “equivalent CO₂” (often abbreviated eCO₂), an estimate derived from other sensor signals, rather than a direct CO₂ measurement. Treat that value differently from a device that states it uses a direct CO₂ method such as nondispersive infrared (NDIR).
NIST’s consumer-sensor presentation uses an illustrative NDIR estimate of 50 ppm or ±2% of the reading and warns that automatic-calibration assumptions require periodic exposure to air without another CO₂ source. That example is not a market-wide guarantee. Automatic calibration can be inappropriate in spaces that are occupied continuously or rarely receive outdoor air, because the device may incorrectly treat a high value as its baseline.
Before replacing a monitor, check batteries or power, firmware and the manufacturer’s calibration procedure. If a persistent result matters, cross-check it with a portable NDIR meter that publishes an accuracy specification and clear calibration instructions. Compare instruments side by side only after both have stabilized and are positioned so neither is in a person’s exhaled plume.

8. Choosing a monitor for troubleshooting
When comparing devices, prioritize measurement and maintenance information over extra connectivity features.
| Feature to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Direct CO₂ technology, such as NDIR, versus eCO₂ | Shows whether the display is based on a CO₂ measurement or an estimate. |
| Stated accuracy and measurement range | Defines how much uncertainty to expect and whether the device covers your likely conditions. |
| Calibration method and instructions | Reveals whether automatic baseline assumptions fit your home and how to correct drift. |
| Warm-up, service-life and environmental limits | Helps prevent readings taken before stabilization or outside the allowed temperature and humidity. |
| Data logging | Allows you to relate peaks to occupancy, ventilation settings and time of day. |
| Physical placement options | A stand, wall mount or portable design makes it easier to keep the sensor in a representative breathing zone. |
Choose a device whose documentation is specific enough to explain uncertainty and calibration. Do not infer accuracy from price alone.
9. Decide when to seek health or emergency help
A CO₂ display by itself cannot establish an individual health risk. If people have headaches, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue, breathing difficulty or other concerning symptoms, consider all possible causes and contact a healthcare provider. Tell the provider about symptoms, timing, occupancy and any combustion sources; do not present the monitor’s number as a diagnosis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If symptoms are severe, someone is confused or unconscious, or a certified CO alarm sounds, leave the area and follow local emergency guidance. Ventilate only when doing so does not delay evacuation or put anyone at risk. Have fuel-burning appliances inspected by qualified personnel before reuse when appropriate.
Quick Recap
10. A practical decision checklist
- Identify the gas: verify CO₂, keep certified CO alarms in service, and respond to any CO alarm separately.
- Stabilize and reposition: use the manufacturer’s warm-up period, place the monitor 3–6 feet high when appropriate, and keep it more than 50 cm from people and away from drafts.
- Collect a pattern: log several readings with occupancy, ventilation and activities.
- Compare with context: use figures such as 800 ppm, 110% of baseline or 1,500 ppm only as the clearly qualified guidance described above.
- Test outdoor air: make one safe ventilation change and observe the response.
- Check the building: inspect fans, controls, grilles and airflow paths; do not expect particle filtration to lower CO₂.
- Verify the instrument: review calibration, eCO₂ versus direct measurement and, if necessary, cross-check with a documented NDIR meter.
- Escalate persistent problems: provide your logs to a qualified ventilation professional, and seek medical or emergency help for symptoms or suspected CO exposure.
