A grand strategy game that feels “slow” may have a low frame rate, a lagging simulation, long loading screens, stutter, a freeze, or a crash. Those symptoms have different causes, so the fastest fix is to identify which one you have and then test changes in a controlled order. Start with the exact game requirements and installed-file verification, then test graphics settings, updates, mods, background software, power, temperature, memory, and storage. If the game displays a named error or fails at a specific loading stage, use that title’s official support procedure and protect your saves before deleting files.
Identify what “slow” or “crashing” actually means
Write down what happens immediately before the problem. A responsive interface with days or turns advancing very slowly is a simulation-speed problem. A camera that moves unevenly, low frame rates, or visible hitching points toward rendering or resource pressure. A long, otherwise stable loading screen is usually a storage, file, or memory issue. A total freeze, sudden return to the desktop, or launch failure needs a crash branch rather than one generic “optimization.”
| Symptom | Useful first clues | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Simulation advances slowly | Check whether the interface remains responsive; note whether it starts in late-game saves or every campaign. | An SSD will speed up the game’s turn or day processing. |
| Low or uneven frame rate | Lower detail, shadows, resolution, or display mode and test one group of settings. | Meeting minimum requirements guarantees a particular frame rate. |
| Stutter | Check free system memory, background programs, drivers, mods, and heat. | More graphics memory alone proves the cause. |
| Long loading | Compare a clean save with a heavily modded save; check drive health, free space, and storage type. | Storage upgrades fix crashes or simulation speed. |
| Freeze or crash to desktop | Record the save, loading percentage, error text, recent update, and active mods. | Deleting the game’s data folders is a universal repair. |
| Launch error | Search the exact title and error wording in the publisher’s support system. | A general graphics tweak will resolve a named startup failure. |
Record the game version, operating system, processor, graphics device, installed memory, storage drive, display resolution, recent driver or game updates, and active mods. Note whether the problem affects every save or only one. This information makes a support request actionable and prevents you from changing several variables without knowing which one mattered.

Check requirements and verify the installation
Compare with the current requirements for your exact platform
Open the game’s current store or publisher listing and compare your computer with its minimum requirements. Requirements are title-specific and can differ by operating system. For example, the Steam listing for Stellaris has platform-specific requirements that may change over time. Check the live listing rather than relying on a forum post or an old box specification.

Minimum requirements are a starting threshold, not a performance promise. A computer that meets them may still deliver low frame rates in a large late-game galaxy, take longer to load a heavily modded campaign, or need reduced settings. If your hardware is below the listed minimum, software troubleshooting may improve stability but cannot guarantee acceptable performance.
Verify game files before reinstalling
Missing or damaged files can cause performance problems, loading failures, and crashes. Use the file-verification or “verify integrity” feature in the launcher that installed the game, such as Steam or Epic, and follow that platform’s current instructions. Verification replaces or reacquires only files the launcher identifies as missing or corrupt, so it is a safer first escalation than deleting folders.
After verification finishes, restart the computer and reproduce the same action that failed. If the problem remains, keep the verification result and continue with one change at a time rather than repeating the operation indefinitely.
Test graphics settings without losing track of the cause
Reduce the settings most likely to affect rendering
Lower detail and shadow quality first. If the frame rate is still uneven, test a lower resolution or switch between fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes. Apply one setting group, run the same save or benchmark-like sequence, and record the result. This method distinguishes a rendering limit from a simulation or software fault.

Some graphics companion applications automatically optimize a game or override its profile. Temporarily disable automatic optimization, overlays, or forced settings and let the game control its own options. If the problem disappears, restore features individually so you can identify the conflicting setting.
Use the intended graphics processor
On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm in the operating system’s graphics settings or the game’s launcher that the title is using the intended GPU. A game running on integrated graphics can show low frame rates even when a more capable chip is installed. Make this check while the laptop is connected to its charger; battery operation may restrict power delivery.
Update software and remove conflicts
Install operating-system and graphics-driver updates
Check Windows Update and the graphics manufacturer’s official driver channel. Reboot after installation, then test the same scenario. A driver update can fix a title-specific rendering or startup problem, but a new driver can also introduce a regression. If the issue began immediately after an update, consult the game and driver vendor’s current support notes before attempting a rollback.

Close nonessential background software
Exit recording tools, overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities, browser windows with heavy workloads, and other nonessential applications. Third-party software can hook into rendering, consume memory, or conflict with anti-cheat and launcher components. Do not disable security software permanently; if a support article recommends a temporary test, follow its scope and restore protection afterward.
Check power, heat, memory, and resolution
Prevent laptop power and thermal throttling
Use the manufacturer’s performance power profile while plugged in and ensure that air intakes and exhausts are unobstructed. Heat can cause a laptop to reduce CPU or GPU power; severe overheating can result in a crash. If performance degrades after several minutes rather than at launch, temperature and power limits become more plausible. Let the system cool, clean vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and test again.
Watch free system memory
SEGA Support’s PC Performance FAQ, updated 10 March 2026, warns that having less than 1 GB of free system memory while the game and other applications are running may cause paging and repeated stutters. That figure is general guidance, not proof that memory is the cause on your computer. Close unnecessary programs and observe free memory during the problem. If the game repeatedly consumes available memory, investigate mods, save size, and title-specific requirements instead of assuming that adding RAM is the only answer.
Account for video-memory use
Higher resolutions require more video memory. If the selected settings exceed available VRAM, some games automatically reduce options to avoid an out-of-memory crash. Lower resolution, texture quality, and other VRAM-heavy settings, then restart the game to test. Automatic reductions are a clue that the selected configuration is too demanding; they do not establish that the graphics card is defective.

Handle freezes, crashes, and startup errors safely
Capture the exact failure
Write down the error code or message exactly, the loading percentage or named stage, whether the crash occurs in a new campaign or an existing save, and what changed recently. Search that exact title-and-error combination in the publisher’s official support site. A named failure such as a graphics-device error or a startup crash usually has a more precise procedure than a generic performance checklist.
Back up saves and mods before deleting data
Copy saves, configuration files, and mod lists to a separate folder before removing game data or reinstalling. Paradox’s helpdesk article for a specific Hearts of Iron IV “Loading Graphics” problem instructs players to delete that game’s Documents folder and explicitly requires a backup first. Treat that instruction as specific to that article, not as a universal fix for every grand strategy title. Folder locations and reset procedures differ by game and operating system.
Use logs when support asks for them
If the general checks fail, contact the game’s support team through its official process. Attach crash logs, system information, and the exact steps to reproduce the failure when requested. Riot Games’ general PC crash guidance, published 28 October 2025, emphasizes searching for the named error and supplying logs; apply that process through the relevant game’s own support channel rather than substituting advice for another title.

Decide whether storage is the bottleneck
What an SSD can improve
An internal SSD or M.2 drive can reduce loading times compared with a slower hard disk, especially when a game reads many small files. SEGA recommends SSD or M.2 storage for the best loading experience and advises checking drive health, available space, and background tasks. Move or install the game on the SSD, leave adequate free capacity, and retest the same save.

Storage speed does not establish a remedy for crashes, low frame rates, or slow late-game simulation. Those symptoms depend more directly on game code, CPU/GPU workload, memory pressure, drivers, mods, or corrupted files. Buy storage only after confirming that long loading is the symptom you are trying to change.
Check compatibility before purchasing
- Interface: confirm whether the computer supports the drive’s SATA or PCIe/NVMe interface.
- Form factor: check the available 2.5-inch bay or M.2 slot, including length and mounting hardware.
- Capacity: allow room for the operating system, the game, updates, saves, and free space needed for normal operation.
- Actual bottleneck: verify that storage, rather than system memory, VRAM, graphics performance, or CPU simulation speed, is causing the delay.
- Drive condition: check health indicators and available space before moving a library.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Classify the symptom. Separate simulation speed, frame rate, stutter, loading, freeze, crash, and launch error.
- Record context. Note title and version, platform, hardware, save, mods, recent updates, and the exact reproduction steps.
- Check requirements. Use the current listing for the exact operating system and edition.
- Verify files. Run the launcher’s file-verification tool, restart, and retest.
- Test graphics. Lower detail and shadows, then resolution or display mode; change one group at a time.
- Remove software variables. Disable mods, automatic graphics optimization, overlays, and nonessential background applications for a controlled test.
- Update and power correctly. Install official Windows and graphics-driver updates, plug in laptops, select the intended GPU, and check for overheating.
- Check resources. Observe free system memory, VRAM-related setting reductions, drive health, and free storage.
- Follow title-specific support. Search exact error text or loading stage, back up saves and mods, and apply only the documented folder-reset or reinstall steps.
- Escalate with evidence. Send logs and reproduction details to the game’s support team if the controlled tests do not resolve the issue.
SEGA Support summarizes the limits of generic advice this way: “Please keep in mind that since there are various configurations and individual expectations, we can only provide general guidelines for these issues.” That qualification matters: a successful fix on one computer is not evidence that the same change will solve a different title, save, or hardware configuration.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek title-specific help
- The game crashes only on one save while new campaigns work; the save or its mod dependencies may need title-specific recovery.
- The failure always occurs at the same loading percentage or named stage; search that exact stage in the publisher’s helpdesk.
- A graphics-device or startup error persists after file verification, driver checks, and an unmodded test.
- The computer is below the title’s minimum requirements or repeatedly runs out of system memory or VRAM.
- Deleting configuration data or reinstalling is proposed; make and verify backups first.
Do not keep repeating broad fixes once the symptom is reproducible and documented. The combination of exact error text, logs, hardware details, save scope, and a list of tested changes gives the game’s support team the information needed to identify a title-specific defect or configuration issue.
