If a geomagnetic storm makes your GPS position jump, disappear, or disagree with the road, treat the displayed fix as unverified. Slow down or stop in a safe place, navigate with signs, landmarks, a printed or pre-downloaded map, and a compass you know how to use, then obtain reliable local information. If radio reception fails, determine which service is affected, switch to any working communications channel, and follow official instructions. A consumer receiver, including a battery or hand-crank model, cannot be guaranteed to restore an ionospherically disrupted signal.

What a geomagnetic storm can disrupt

Geomagnetic storms disturb Earth’s ionosphere, the electrically charged region through which satellite-navigation and some radio signals travel. The result depends on storm intensity, geography, the signal path, and the equipment involved. A warning or scale level describes expected risk; it does not mean every receiver in every location will fail.

GPS and GNSS positioning

GPS and other GNSS satellites transmit signals through the ionosphere. Storm-related changes can bend or delay those signals, increase positioning error, or cause a receiver to lose lock. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center notes that, during a severe space-weather storm, errors can reach tens of meters or more. That is a possible effect, not a prediction that every phone, car, or survey receiver will show that error.

HF radio propagation

High-frequency (HF) radio means the 1–30 MHz band. Long-distance HF links rely on ionospheric reflection and refraction, so changing ionospheric density and structure can make a link fade, become intermittent, or be blocked. Solar flares and energetic particles can also produce radio blackouts; not every HF failure during active space weather is caused by the geomagnetic storm itself.

What the NOAA scales mean

NOAA’s Space Weather Scales classify expected effects, but they are not a device-by-device forecast. For example, NOAA’s estimated average frequencies put an R1 radio-blackout category at about 2,000 occurrences per solar cycle and R5 at fewer than one per cycle. Those are scale estimates, not a probability that your receiver will fail or a promise about how long an interruption will last.

First priorities during an interruption

  1. Protect immediate safety. If you are driving, piloting, boating, hiking, or operating equipment, reduce speed or stop at a safe location when the navigation display conflicts with what you can see.
  2. Mark the last trustworthy position. Note the road, landmark, intersection, bearing, or address you can verify without GPS. This gives you a known reference if the display later recovers with a different fix.
  3. Use independent information. Check signs, landmarks, a printed map, a downloaded offline map, or a compass. Do not continue into an uncertain route merely because an app draws a blue line.
  4. Establish a working information channel. Try another available communications method and monitor official emergency messages through whichever source still works.
  5. Follow local instructions. During an emergency, local authorities and established emergency plans take precedence over a navigation app or an unverified broadcast.

If GPS becomes unreliable

Recognize an untrustworthy fix

Warning signs include a position that jumps between roads, a speed or direction that is physically impossible, a route that sends you across barriers or water, a large disagreement with visible signs, or repeated loss and reacquisition of the satellite fix. A stale position can look plausible, so a familiar-looking map marker is not proof that it is current.

Use a layered backup

  • Road and trail users: Follow numbered signs, mile markers, intersections, trail blazes, and known landmarks. Write down the last confirmed point before moving.
  • Printed or offline maps: Use a paper map or map data downloaded before the event. Confirm that the map covers the entire area you may need, not only the starting point.
  • Compass: Use a magnetic or electronic compass only if you understand bearings and local declination well enough to interpret it. A compass gives direction, not your position.
  • Local assistance: Ask a staffed facility, transportation office, marina, ranger station, or emergency service for route information when you cannot independently establish a safe path.

When to stop instead of pressing on

Stop in a safe, visible place if you cannot reconcile the receiver with the physical environment, if weather or terrain makes a wrong turn dangerous, or if you have lost both navigation and communications. Do not park where you block emergency access. Preserve battery power while you seek a verified route or instructions.

Check non-space-weather causes

GPS.gov lists signal blockage, receiver design, interference, and mapping-software errors as other possible explanations. Test the same device in an open area, compare it with another receiver if one is available, and check whether the problem follows one app or affects all navigation equipment. A single-device fault should not be treated as evidence of a geomagnetic storm.

If radio reception or communications fail

Identify the affected service

Ask whether the failure affects one HF frequency, all HF stations, a local broadcast band, cellular service, or every communications method you can test. Space weather does not affect every band and service identically. A local transmitter outage, antenna problem, power loss, or interference can resemble an ionospheric problem.

Move to another available channel

If an HF link is unusable, try another authorized communications method that remains available, such as a cellular call or text, a landline, an internet connection, or a local public-safety channel you are permitted to use. Keep messages short, include your location using landmarks or an address rather than GPS coordinates alone, and avoid repeatedly transmitting when battery power is limited.

Get official information

Use any reliable source that is working: local authorities, emergency-management announcements, transportation agencies, or a functioning broadcast. The National Weather Service advises monitoring emergency broadcast radios after an extreme space-weather event. Treat forwarded social-media claims and unverified frequency reports as leads, not instructions.

Understand the limit of emergency radios

A battery-powered or hand-crank emergency weather radio is useful when the electrical grid is down and can help you monitor broadcasts, but it does not repair an ionospheric path or guarantee reception. Keep trying the channels and locations recommended by local officials rather than assuming that a different power source will overcome propagation loss.

Prepare before a storm is forecast

Make navigation independent of one device

  • Keep a current paper map for places you routinely travel and mark addresses, alternate roads, fuel stops, and meeting points.
  • Download maps for areas where you may lose service, and learn how to display them without a data connection.
  • Carry a simple compass and practice taking a bearing before you need it.
  • Record the last verified location during a journey so a later GPS fix can be checked against it.

Build a family communications plan

Write down primary and backup ways to contact each person, an out-of-area contact, meeting locations, and who is responsible for children, older adults, or dependents. Keep the plan on paper as well as on phones. Agree on a short status message and a time to try again if networks are congested.

Plan for power loss

NWS preparedness guidance recommends backup charging for phones and small electronics, such as spare batteries or solar-powered or hand-crank charging. Store charging cables with the equipment, test it periodically, and conserve power by lowering screen brightness and disabling unnecessary radios when you are safe.

Keep an information kit

Include an emergency weather radio, printed contacts, local emergency numbers, medication information, a flashlight, spare batteries, and copies of relevant travel or medical documents. As NWS puts it, “Space weather can have an impact on our advanced technologies, which have a direct impact on our daily lives.” The purpose of the kit is to preserve decisions and situational awareness if normal power or communications are interrupted, not to guarantee a signal.

Decide which backup to use

Problem you observe What may be happening Best immediate response
GPS marker jumps or disagrees with signs Ionospheric positioning error, blockage, interference, receiver fault, or mapping error Stop safely, verify with signs and landmarks, use an offline or printed map, and seek local information if uncertain
One HF frequency fades Changing ionospheric propagation, local interference, or a transmitter/antenna issue Try an authorized alternate channel or communications method and monitor official sources
Several HF services fail during an alert Broader ionospheric disturbance is possible, but a power or equipment outage can look similar Conserve power, use another working channel, and follow emergency-management instructions
All communications and power are unavailable Local infrastructure failure or a severe wider event Use the family plan, move only when safe, and obtain information from an official source or staffed emergency facility

How location and severity change the outcome

The same storm can produce different results for two people. GPS effects vary with ionospheric conditions along the satellite-to-receiver path and with the receiver’s design. HF effects depend on frequency, time, route, transmitter power, antenna, and the disturbed ionosphere. A scale category therefore informs preparation but cannot tell you whether your particular phone, vehicle, boat, or radio will work.

Do not infer that a working GPS signal means HF is normal, or that an HF blackout means every navigation receiver is wrong. Treat each technology separately and keep at least one independent way to verify a safety-critical decision.

After reception returns

Recheck your position against a known landmark before resuming a route. Compare any coordinates recorded during the disruption with a map or address, and report persistent errors, unusual interference, or equipment faults to the relevant service provider or authority. Recharge devices, replace spent batteries, and update your paper and digital plans while the event is still fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Can a geomagnetic storm affect a smartphone even when the map is visible?

Yes. A map image can remain on screen while the phone’s GNSS position is delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable. Judge the position by independent landmarks and signs rather than by the fact that the app itself is open.
