Stop folding the phone if the hinge is jammed, bent, cracked, or separating, and do not press, peel, or force the inner display. Photograph the damage, record whether the outer screen and touch still work, back up your data if the phone is usable, then check coverage and request a model-specific assessment from the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Coverage and price depend on the exact model, country, purchase date, protection plan, and cause of failure.
Take these safety steps first
Stop movement when there is physical damage
A visibly cracked inner panel, bent hinge, bulging or separating display, exposed layers, or a phone that no longer opens and closes normally is a reason to stop folding it. Continued movement can spread a crack, damage the hinge cable, or turn a repairable fault into additional damage. Keep the device in the least stressful position it can hold, protect it from pressure in a bag or pocket, and arrange an assessment through the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Never force a hinge past resistance, snap the phone shut, press hard on a dark area, or try to flatten a raised section. Do not peel a screen film or inner protective layer. Foldable displays and hinge assemblies are model-specific; generic phone-repair instructions can damage them and may affect warranty eligibility.

Write down the exact model and storage variant, the date and circumstances of the failure, and every symptom. Note whether the outer display, inner display, touch input, cameras, charging, speakers, and biometric unlock still work. Record whether the problem appeared after a drop, liquid exposure, dust or debris, overheating, or a previous repair. Take clear photographs of the phone open and closed, the hinge from both sides, the crease, any lines or dark spots, and any cracks. This record helps a service center distinguish a display defect from impact or liquid damage and gives you evidence of the phone’s condition at intake.

Back up data while the phone still works
If either screen remains usable, back up photos, messages, contacts, authenticator data, and files immediately. A repair can require a factory reset or replacement of the phone, and the service center may not be able to recover data from a failed inner display. Follow the maker’s intake checklist rather than assuming that every manufacturer requires the same preparation.
For example, Motorola India says repair-center service erases data and recommends backing up, erasing the device, removing the Google account, and sending neither the SIM or SD card nor accessories. Motorola’s EMEA guidance also recommends backing up and erasing before mail-in service. Samsung Malaysia’s Galaxy Z Fold2 terms require a backup and SIM removal and state that Samsung is not responsible for on-screen accessories left attached. If the phone cannot power on or you cannot back it up, tell the service provider before authorizing a reset.
Match the symptom to the likely service path
The hinge resists, will not open, or will not close
Resistance, grinding, a hinge that stops at an unusual angle, or a device that no longer sits evenly when closed warrants a physical inspection. Do not insert tools, liquids, paper, or compressed air into the hinge and do not repeatedly exercise it to “loosen” it. A service technician needs to determine whether the cause is debris, hinge deformation, a detached internal component, or damage to the display flex connection.

The inner screen is black but the phone appears powered on
Check whether the outer screen shows notifications, rings, or charging information and whether the phone responds to touch or buttons. Those observations are useful for triage, but they do not prove that the fault is only software. If the outer display works, use it to back up the phone and capture the symptoms. Do not press the black panel or attempt an unapproved screen swap.

There are lines, flicker, dead touch zones, or a spot near the crease
Lines that change as the phone moves, intermittent flicker, a spreading dark spot, or touch failure around the crease can indicate damage to the flexible display or its connection. Stop opening and closing the phone if the symptom is worsening. Photograph the display at a consistent brightness and note whether the problem appears immediately after boot or only after folding.
The display is cracked, lifting, or separating
Visible cracking or separation should be treated as physical damage even if the phone still functions. Keep pressure off the affected area and avoid moisture. Do not remove a layer that appears loose; a service center must identify whether it is a replaceable protector or part of the display assembly.
Check warranty and protection-plan eligibility
Coverage cannot be determined from the symptom alone. The manufacturer normally considers the warranty period, the country where the phone was sold, the exact model, inspection findings, and whether there is evidence of impact or liquid. Ask the maker to evaluate the actual device rather than relying on a general promise that a hinge or inner-screen failure is covered.
Use the manufacturer’s eligibility tool
Google’s Pixel Repair & Warranty Learning Center explains available repair routes. In Google’s warranty-status guidance, you enter device information and location to see whether the phone is in warranty and what service options may apply. Google’s coverage-check page distinguishes display problems without physical or liquid damage from cracked or broken screens, cosmetic damage, drops, and liquid damage. It says, “Your warranty may cover a replacement, repair, or refund,” but the final decision depends on the phone’s condition and the applicable terms.

For Pixel devices, Google says to enter the IMEI and select the reported issues to learn whether the damage may be covered and to see an estimated repair cost. This estimate is not a diagnosis until the device is inspected.
Understand regional and plan-specific differences
Motorola’s standard warranty terms vary by market. Its India repair page says physical damage is not covered by the standard one-year warranty and that the repair center determines any out-of-warranty price. Motorola’s EMEA page describes a standard two-year warranty, also excluding physical damage from that standard coverage, while noting that an optional Moto Care Accident Protection Plan may cover accidental damage. The applicable country and plan must be stated when you ask for a decision.
A Samsung Malaysia document for the Galaxy Z Fold2 describes a one-time inner-screen crack-protection benefit and a separate one-time inner-screen defect repair or replacement provision within 12 months, subject to its assessment and terms. That document lists RM600 for the described inner-screen crack-protection claim. It is a dated, Malaysia- and model-specific example, not a current global price or a general warranty promise for every foldable phone.
Request an authorized assessment and written quote
Start with the manufacturer’s official support site for your country, then choose an authorized walk-in, mail-in, or collection service where available. Tell the agent the exact model, IMEI if requested, purchase date, location, symptoms, and any drop or liquid history. Ask whether the proposed route is an authorized repair, a replacement device, or an inspection followed by a decision.

Google’s Pixel repair instructions say that options depend on the device, warranty status, and location. Where mail-in service is supported, Google gives a usual duration of 7–10 business days. That is an estimate for Google’s process, not a guaranteed turnaround for every country, model, or foldable repair.
Before paid work begins, request a written estimate that separates parts, labor, shipping, taxes, and any diagnostic fee. Ask why the device was classified as out of warranty, whether the quoted part is new or refurbished, how long the repair is warranted, and whether the repair will erase data. If the first estimate is unexpectedly high, ask whether a replacement-device option or a second authorized assessment exists under your plan.
Prepare the phone for service
- Finish the backup. Confirm that critical files and account recovery methods are accessible from another device.
- Follow the provider’s account instructions. Some services require you to remove a Google account or disable an activation lock before repair.
- Remove personal items. Unless the provider explicitly requests them, remove the SIM, microSD card, case, stylus, and loose accessories. Keep proof of purchase and the service authorization number.
- Record the condition. Photograph all sides, the screen state, and the IMEI or serial label before shipping. Pack the phone exactly as instructed and use tracking for a mail-in shipment.
- Disclose limitations. Tell the technician if the phone cannot power on, cannot be backed up, has a swollen battery, or contains business or regulated data.
Do not assume that a factory reset is always required before inspection. If the phone is unusable or contains data you cannot lose, ask what diagnostic access is possible and whether the provider can inspect it without erasing it.
Compare repair channels on the facts that matter
A local independent shop may be convenient, but foldable repairs require exact parts, specialized fixtures, and experience with the hinge and flexible display assembly. Compare an independent quote with an authorized option using the same questions:

Available official sources provide manufacturer repair routes and some cost-estimation tools, but they do not establish a reliable cross-brand price list or prove the quality of any particular independent shop. Choose based on documented compatibility, written terms, and the value of preserving coverage.
Why generic DIY replacement is usually the wrong first move
Motorola EMEA links to online repair kits containing genuine parts and tools and says difficulty varies by model and damage. Its guidance recommends using the DIY route only for out-of-warranty devices because repair damage can affect standard warranty coverage. That is a narrow option, not evidence that every foldable screen or hinge is user-replaceable. The guidance does not confirm a kit for every Razr model or universal foldable-screen repairability.
A failed hinge or inner display is substantially different from replacing a conventional phone battery. Without model-specific instructions, opening the frame can puncture the display, damage water-resistant seals, misalign the hinge, or destroy data access. Do not buy a generic toolkit or follow a video for a different model as a substitute for an authorized diagnosis.

No single price applies to foldable repairs. The total depends on whether the fault is covered, whether the hinge and inner display must both be replaced, the local labor rate, parts availability, taxes, shipping, and the phone’s age. Official support pages generally provide an estimate only after you identify the device and reported damage.
The Samsung Malaysia Galaxy Z Fold2 terms cited above list RM600 for one specific one-time inner-screen crack-protection claim. Treat that amount as a historical, country- and model-limited benefit, not as the normal cash price for a screen repair. Google’s 7–10-business-day figure similarly describes an estimated mail-in duration, not a universal repair promise. For an unnamed phone, the honest answer is a model- and location-specific quote after inspection.
Questions to ask before authorizing work
- What exact fault did the inspection find, and is it classified as a defect, accidental damage, liquid damage, or cosmetic damage?
- Which part numbers will be installed, and are they new, refurbished, or third-party?
- Will the repair replace only the inner display, only the hinge assembly, or both?
- Will the phone be reset or its account locks changed?
- What is the complete price and estimated completion date, and what can change that estimate?
- What warranty covers the repair, and where do I return the phone if the same symptom comes back?
Keep the written diagnosis, estimate, photographs, shipping record, and final invoice. If coverage is denied, ask for the reason in writing and whether the decision can be reviewed under the applicable warranty or protection-plan terms.
