If your fingerprint smart lock rejects your finger, keep the door accessible with the lock’s passcode, app, physical key, or another method your model supports. Then work from the least disruptive checks: clean and dry your finger and the sensor, improve finger placement, confirm that the finger is enrolled, check batteries and weather, and use only the manufacturer’s documented restart procedure. Do not factory-reset the lock as a first response.
The exact buttons, battery cells, enrollment count, timeout behavior, and reset consequences vary by model. The procedures below separate general checks from instructions documented for specific locks, so you do not apply one brand’s sequence to another lock.
1. Get the door open without changing settings
Before troubleshooting, use an alternate entry method if one is available. Depending on the lock, that may be an access code, a mobile app command, a supplied mechanical key, or another credential configured during installation. eufy’s support guidance lists a password, app, or supplied key for supported situations, but no lock should be assumed to provide all three.
If you are outside and have no working backup, contact another authorized household member or a locksmith rather than repeatedly guessing fingerprints. Repeated failures can trigger a temporary security lockout, and forcing the scanner or cover can damage it.

2. Clean the finger and scanner
Fingerprint readers need a clear optical or capacitive contact area. Dirt, hand lotion, sweat, rainwater, or residue on either surface can prevent a match even when the enrolled finger has not changed.
Clean your finger
- Wash or wipe the finger you normally use.
- Dry it completely. A wet fingertip can scatter the sensor’s reading; a very dry or cracked fingertip can also reduce the usable ridge detail.
- Remove greasy lotion, food residue, dust, or mud before trying again.
Clean the sensor
- Use a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- Wipe the scanner gently until no visible smudge, water bead, or debris remains.
- Do not pour liquid onto the reader, scrape it with a sharp object, or use a solvent unless the model’s manual specifically permits it.
eufy identifies wet or dirty fingers and a contaminated scanner as causes of failed recognition. Lockly likewise advises keeping its sensor free of dirt and smudges. If the lock is exposed to rain, dry the reader and your finger before testing again.
3. Use steady, centered contact
A clean finger can still fail if only part of the pad touches the reader or if you lift it too quickly. Place the central pad of the enrolled finger over the active area, cover the sensor fully, and hold still until the lock signals success or failure.

One-click scans. No signup required.
For Lockly Secure Plus and Secure Pro guidance, Lockly says to hold the finger still for more than one second until the beep. That timing is not universal: follow the light, tone, or on-screen prompt for your own model. Avoid sliding, rocking, or twisting the finger during the scan. If the reader is small, try the same centered position several times rather than changing the angle on every attempt.
4. Confirm that this exact finger is enrolled
A lock recognizes only fingerprints stored in that particular lock’s memory. A finger registered on a previous lock, a replacement keypad, or a different user profile will not automatically work on the current device.

- Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.
Check the enrolled finger
- Use the same finger you selected during setup.
- Try another enrolled finger if the lock supports more than one.
- Check the owner or administrator app for the user and fingerprint record, if your model provides one.
- If the lock was recently reset, had its keypad replaced, or lost configuration after a battery or electronics problem, verify that the fingerprints still appear in its settings.
Enroll a second finger when access is restored
Skin changes can affect a previously reliable print. Cuts, scars, peeling, severe dryness, or a fading ridge pattern may make one finger harder to match. Enroll another eligible finger, preferably including one from each hand, so a single injury or wet hand does not leave you locked out.
Enrollment prompts differ by model. Lockly’s Secure Plus and Secure Pro instructions require six successful scans to register a fingerprint. That number applies to those models, not to fingerprint locks generally. Start enrollment only after you have a working backup method and can follow the exact sequence in the manual or maker’s app.
5. Check batteries and operating conditions
A fingerprint reader cannot authenticate anyone when the lock has insufficient power. Look for a low-battery warning, dim or unusual status light, slow motor movement, or an app message indicating that the lock is offline.
Replace batteries correctly
- Unlock the door with a backup method before removing the battery cover.
- Read the exact model’s manual for the required battery type and quantity.
- Install a complete set of fresh cells with the correct polarity; do not mix old and new cells or incompatible chemistries.
- Close the cover securely and wait for the lock to finish its startup sequence.
- Test an existing fingerprint before changing enrollment settings.
eufy states that its fingerprint scanner fails when the smart lock loses power. A Lockly support FAQ result recommends fresh AA batteries for the covered model, but that recommendation must not be generalized to every Lockly product or another brand. Use only the cells specified for your exact lock.
Consider rain and temperature
Some models behave differently when the reader is wet. eufy documents rain-related fingerprint failures on its locks and identifies a password, app, or key as alternatives in that situation. Shield the reader from direct rain, dry it, and retry only when the sensor and finger are dry. If the lock is exposed to extreme cold or heat, consult its operating-temperature limits before assuming the scanner has failed permanently.

6. Restart the lock only with its documented method
A restart can clear a temporary reader or communication fault without deleting users. A factory reset is different: it can remove fingerprints, codes, pairing information, and other configuration. Use the former before considering the latter.
eufy app message: “Fingerprint scan failed”
eufy support instructs owners of affected models to hold the front-bottom reboot button for three seconds until the lock sounds. After the sound, test an existing fingerprint, and clean the finger and button if recognition still fails. This three-second button sequence is model-specific; do not use it on a lock that does not identify the same control.
Lockly restart guidance
Lockly’s support result for a covered lock describes a five-second restart using the hole between two rounded terminals. It explicitly distinguishes restarting from resetting. Because the referenced support page is model-specific, confirm the location and timing in your lock’s manual before inserting anything into a hole or terminal area.
Do not combine procedures
Holding a button for the wrong duration, pressing a reset pin, or removing batteries during enrollment can produce a different result from a normal restart. Record the exact model number and follow only its published sequence.
7. Avoid lockouts and accidental factory resets
Fingerprint locks may delay further attempts after repeated failures. Yale says its Smart Fingerprint Keypad enters a five-minute timeout after five incorrect fingerprint attempts. Wait for the timeout to expire rather than continuing to scan random fingers.

Keep a working code, app connection, or physical key available before changing settings. Yale also warns that resetting its keypad erases associated entry codes. Other locks may erase fingerprints, administrator accounts, schedules, or wireless pairing. A reset is appropriate only when the manufacturer directs it for your exact fault and you have a way to set up access again.
8. Choose the next step by symptom
| What you observe | Checks to perform | Safest next action |
|---|---|---|
| The reader rejects one finger but responds to another enrolled finger | Clean and dry the problem finger; look for a cut, scar, peeling, or severe dryness; verify that the finger is enrolled | Use the working finger, then enroll an additional finger according to the model’s procedure |
| The reader is visibly dirty or wet | Inspect the sensor and fingertip for smudges, moisture, lotion, or debris | Wipe both gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth and retry with steady contact |
| The reader gives no response or the lock appears unpowered | Check low-battery indicators, app status, and the battery compartment | Install the exact battery type specified by the manual, then test an existing print |
| The app reports a scan failure | Note the exact message and model; check finger and sensor condition | Use the model’s documented reboot sequence, such as eufy’s three-second front-bottom reboot on supported locks |
| The problem occurs during rain | Dry the sensor and fingertip; check whether the model documents rain-related behavior | Use the lock’s supported password, app, or key while the reader is wet, then retry when dry |
| The lock starts rejecting every attempt after several tries | Check the manual for an attempt limit or timeout | Stop scanning and wait for the specified timeout; avoid a reset unless directed |
9. Re-enroll only after basic access works
If cleaning, positioning, power checks, and a documented restart do not restore recognition, use a backup method to enter the lock’s management menu or app. Remove and re-add the problematic fingerprint only if the model’s instructions explain how to do so.
- Confirm that the lock has stable power and that you can still open it another way.
- Open the owner or administrator interface identified by the manual.
- Delete only the affected fingerprint record, not the entire user or lock configuration.
- Enroll the finger again using the exact number of scans and prompts shown for that model.
- Test the new print while the door is open and keep the backup method with you.
Do not assume that deleting one print is harmless on every model. Some locks organize fingerprints under users, and removing a user can also remove that person’s code or app permission.
10. When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the maker when the lock still fails after a clean, dry finger; clean sensor; correct placement; verified enrollment; fresh, correctly installed batteries; suitable weather; and the documented restart. Provide support with:

The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal consumer procedure for replacing a fingerprint sensor, repairing its connector, or opening the lock body. Do not disassemble the keypad or bridge terminals unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. If the lock cannot be opened with any authorized method, use a qualified locksmith and be prepared to show proof that you are authorized to access the property.

Model-specific cautions to remember
eufy smart locks
eufy documents failures caused by no power, wet or dirty fingers, sensor contamination, and rain on supported locks. Its support instructions also describe a three-second front-bottom reboot for an app message saying “Fingerprint scan failed,” plus password, app, or key alternatives in supported cases.
Lockly Secure Plus and Secure Pro
Lockly’s enrollment guidance calls for six successful scans and recommends storing more than one finger, including one from each hand. Its recognition guidance says to hold still for more than a second until the beep. A separate Lockly support result describes a five-second restart through a specific hole between rounded terminals; verify that your exact model uses that arrangement.
Yale Smart Fingerprint Keypad
Yale documents a five-minute timeout after five incorrect fingerprint attempts and warns that a keypad reset erases associated entry codes. Wait out the timeout and preserve a backup code or key before considering any reset.
What usually solves the problem
Most safe troubleshooting ends with one of four corrections: drying and cleaning the finger and reader, placing the finger squarely and holding it still, enrolling the actual finger on that lock, or restoring proper battery power. Weather and temporary electronics faults explain some cases, but the recovery action must come from the exact model’s documentation. A restart can be appropriate; a factory reset is a last resort because it can remove the access credentials you need.
