If a data-broker or people-search page puts your address, phone number, relatives, or other personal details back online after an earlier opt-out, treat it as a new removal case. Save the listing and date, identify the company actually responsible, submit the correct deletion or opt-out request, check the result, and escalate through the applicable privacy authority if the information remains.

California residents have a centralized option: the California Privacy Protection Agency’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP). Everyone else should use the site’s own privacy process and the privacy regulator for their state or country. No route guarantees that every copy on the internet disappears immediately or permanently.

Start with the listing that came back

Do not begin by repeatedly clicking an old unsubscribe or opt-out link. First create a record of what is visible now. That evidence helps you identify the right business and compare the broker’s response with the page you later find.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save the exact page address. Copy the listing URL, including any profile or record identifier. Take screenshots showing the personal information, the page date if displayed, and the site’s branding.
  2. Record what is exposed. Note the address, phone number, email, age, relatives, property details, employment information, or other fields shown. Avoid copying more sensitive information than you need for the request.
  3. Note when you found it. Write down the date and time, and keep any earlier confirmation email, ticket number, or opt-out receipt.
  4. Identify the legal operator. Read the privacy policy, terms, footer, and contact page. A site’s public name may be a trade name for a different company, parent, or affiliate.

Preserving the page is practical documentation, not a condition imposed by DROP. It gives you a precise reference if the company says it cannot locate your record or if a regulator asks what remained online.

Why an opt-out can appear to fail

A previous removal request may have addressed one record, one website, or one identifier rather than every copy held by related businesses. A broker can also collect the information again, operate another site under a different name, or be unable to match a request to the record because the submitted details differ.

Deletion also has legal boundaries. A broker may retain information covered by an exception, such as specified public records or data governed by another law. A result can therefore mean that a request was received without meaning that every field was erased. DROP is limited to registered brokers and cannot remove every public web page, directory, or publisher.

California’s DROP route in 2026

California residents can use the California Privacy Protection Agency’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP). CalPrivacy describes it as a single deletion request sent to all active, registered data brokers. The agency’s July 2026 explainer reported more than 600 active brokers and more than 325,000 consumers who had signed up and submitted requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing began on August 1, 2026. Registered brokers must access and process DROP request lists at least once every 45 days. CalPrivacy says a consumer may wait up to 90 days for a status update to appear, so a page that is still visible shortly after submission is not by itself proof that the request was ignored.

DROP is for eligible California residents, not a nationwide service. The platform uses the California Identity Gateway to verify eligibility. Its site says an account is not required and that information is not retained by DROP. CalPrivacy explains that submitted identifiers are hashed so brokers can perform matching without receiving the raw identifiers from the platform. That does not mean no information is processed anywhere; provide only the details you are comfortable submitting and follow the platform’s current instructions.

Submit or update a DROP request step by step

  1. Verify eligibility. Open the official DROP service and complete the California Identity Gateway check. If you are not an eligible California resident, stop here and use the direct route described below.
  2. Create the request profile. Enter the identifiers the platform requests. Use accurate current information, and include prior names, addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses only when the official form allows and you are comfortable providing them.
  3. Send the single request. Submit the deletion request to the registered brokers listed by DROP. Keep the request or confirmation identifier and the submission date.
  4. Wait through the processing window. Brokers check the lists at least every 45 days, while the platform warns that a status may take up to 90 days to appear. Do not submit a new request every few days; doing so can make your records harder to track.
  5. Review each broker’s result. Status can differ from one broker to another. A successful deletion at one company says nothing about an unregistered site or a different legal entity.
  6. Improve a failed match. If the platform says a record was not found, add or update identifiers when appropriate, then submit the update through DROP. More or newer identifiers can help matching, but never provide information you do not want the system to process.

CalPrivacy says you submit the DROP request once, and brokers must ensure information remains deleted if they collect it again in the future. That continuing obligation applies to participating registered brokers; it is not a promise that unrelated websites or every internet copy will disappear.

Understand every DROP status

Status What it usually means What to do next
Record deleted The broker matched you and deleted non-exempt information. Check the original listing after a reasonable update period and save the status record. A separate site may still have a copy.
Record exempted The broker matched you but may retain the information under a legal exception. Read the broker’s explanation and determine whether another right, such as correction or an opt-out of sale, addresses the remaining use.
Record opted out of sale The broker could not confidently match one shared identifier to one person, so sale or sharing is stopped for associated consumers; the record may remain. Supply additional permitted identifiers if you want to pursue a deletion match, and check whether the listing is still publicly displayed.
Record not found The broker did not find a matching record. This can mean it lacks the record or could not match the identifiers you submitted. Review spelling, prior addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Add appropriate identifiers in DROP and try again.
Pending The broker has not processed the request yet. Allow for the 45-day access cycle and the possible 90-day status delay before treating the lack of an update as a compliance problem.

A status is about that broker’s response to that request. It is not evidence that every other broker, affiliate, search engine cache, or public record has changed.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

When to contact the broker directly

DROP covers registered data brokers and is designed for third-party brokered information. It may not cover information a business collected directly from you through an account, purchase, newsletter subscription, or similar relationship. CalPrivacy says you can submit a separate privacy request to that business for directly supplied information.

Use the company’s privacy or “Do not sell or share” process when:

  • the operator is not listed as a registered broker covered by DROP;
  • you gave the information directly to the company;
  • you need a correction rather than deletion;
  • you want to stop sale or sharing while a deletion request is reviewed; or
  • the company’s legal entity differs from the name shown in a search result.

Save the submission date, confirmation number, identity-verification steps, and the response. Ask the operator to identify any reason it retained the data and whether it has sent the information to affiliates or other sites. Do not send unnecessary identity documents through an unverified email address; use the channel named in the company’s official privacy notice.

DROP versus a direct broker request

Decision point California DROP Direct request to a company
Who can use it Eligible California residents. People who can use the company’s stated privacy process; exact eligibility depends on the applicable law.
Coverage One request to registered data brokers participating in the state system, reported at more than 600 active brokers in July 2026. One named operator, including a site that is not a registered broker or a business outside DROP’s coverage.
Best data source Information obtained and shared by participating brokers. Information you supplied directly, or a record that needs a company-specific correction or explanation.
Tracking Per-broker statuses such as deleted, exempted, opted out of sale, not found, or pending; updates can take up to 90 days. The company’s ticket, email, or privacy-request response; no common state dashboard is established by the information available here.
Typical next step after a mismatch Update identifiers in DROP and resubmit according to the platform’s instructions. Contact the operator’s privacy team and explain the exact listing URL and identifiers that match it.

Choose the right privacy request

Deletion, sale-and-sharing opt-out, and correction solve different problems. California’s Attorney General describes these as separate consumer rights, subject to exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Request Purpose Use it when
Deletion Ask the business to erase covered personal information. You want the broker to remove the record and no legal exception applies.
Opt out of sale or sharing Stop the business from selling or sharing information; the record may remain. You need to limit onward use immediately or deletion is unavailable.
Correction Fix inaccurate or incomplete details. A wrong address, age, relative, or other field is causing harm and the business retains the record.
Access or disclosure Ask what information was collected and how it is used. You need to understand the source, categories, or recipients before choosing a remedy.

The California Department of Justice’s consumer FAQ states: “Businesses cannot sell or share your personal information after they receive your opt-out request unless you later authorize them to do so again.” That is a California-specific consumer-rights explanation, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction.

Find the business behind a reposted page

CalPrivacy warns that brokers can use multiple trade names or websites, or point to a parent or affiliate registration. Search the California data-broker registry for the operator’s legal name, then compare that entry with the listing’s privacy policy and contact details.

Check for:

  • a corporate name in the privacy policy or terms that differs from the logo;
  • an “operated by,” “owned by,” parent-company, or affiliate statement;
  • matching mailing addresses, privacy contacts, or request portals across related sites;
  • an old opt-out confirmation issued by a different legal entity; and
  • separate records for a current address, former address, phone number, or email address.

Send the request to the entity that controls the listing, while naming the public-facing site and exact URL. If the registry points to a parent or affiliate, retain that registration information with your evidence.

If the information remains after the response window

  1. Recheck the status and the page. Confirm that at least the applicable 45-day broker access cycle and, where relevant, the 90-day status period have passed.
  2. Compare identifiers. Make sure the request used the same name, address, phone, or email variants that appear on the listing. Update the DROP profile or direct request if the official process permits.
  3. Ask a focused follow-up. Cite the request ID, listing URL, submission date, and status. Ask whether the page is an exempt record, a separate affiliate record, or a newly collected record.
  4. Escalate to CalPrivacy when appropriate. California consumers who believe a registered broker is not complying should keep request IDs, screenshots, and status histories and use CalPrivacy’s official contact or complaint route.

CalPrivacy states that failure to delete can result in a statutory penalty of $200 per day per consumer plus enforcement costs. That is a potential agency enforcement penalty, not money automatically owed to the individual whose information was reposted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a repost is unlawful solely because an earlier opt-out existed. The answer can depend on the jurisdiction, the data source, the broker’s registration, applicable exemptions, timing, and whether the company actually matched your request.

If you live outside California

The California process and timelines do not establish your rights elsewhere. Start with the reposting site’s privacy or opt-out page, identify its legal operator, and ask the privacy authority in your state or country which deletion, correction, access, or sale-and-sharing rules apply. Keep the same evidence: URL, date, displayed fields, request confirmation, and response.

Some jurisdictions may cover a people-search broker while others may exclude public records, impose identity-verification requirements, or provide different response periods. Do not copy California’s 45-day or 90-day schedule into a complaint outside California unless your local authority confirms that it applies.

Practical checklist

  • Listing URL and screenshots saved.
  • Date and time of discovery recorded.
  • Displayed fields and possible identifier variants noted.
  • Legal operator, trade name, parent, or affiliate checked.
  • California eligibility verified before using DROP.
  • DROP request ID or direct-request confirmation retained.
  • Each broker status reviewed separately.
  • “Not found” or weak-match results followed by an identifier update when appropriate.
  • Exemptions and directly supplied information handled through a separate request where needed.
  • Complaint evidence preserved before escalation.

The most reliable approach is targeted rather than repetitive: document the exact repost, send the request to the entity that controls it, interpret the status precisely, and use the privacy authority that matches your location and the broker’s legal status.
