A different crypto price is often normal: each exchange has its own order book, and its headline figure may be a last trade, midpoint, bid, ask, or an indicative conversion quote. Before trading or disputing a fill, match the exact pair and timestamp, identify what each display measures, compare bid/ask prices and order-book depth, then verify the completed order record. If the quote or record still appears inconsistent, preserve dated evidence and contact the exchange through its official support channel.
Why two exchanges can show different prices
There is no single, continuously enforced crypto price across all venues. Every exchange maintains a separate order book containing its own buy and sell orders. The exchange’s “last price” is simply the price of the most recent trade in that book. Another venue may have completed its latest trade seconds earlier, at a different level, with different participants and available liquidity.
Differences are more visible on a lightly traded pair. If trades are sparse, the last price can remain unchanged for a long interval even while prices on busier venues move. A shallow book can also move several price levels when a modest order arrives. Trading activity may eventually bring venues closer together, but a premium or discount can persist while the books remain thin or disconnected.

“Price” can mean several different things
Before deciding that a quote is wrong, determine which number you are looking at. Common definitions include:
| Display | What it represents | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Last trade | The price at which the venue’s most recent transaction occurred. | A price available for your order now. |
| Bid | The highest current price a buyer is offering. | That you can sell your entire quantity at that level. |
| Ask | The lowest current price a seller is offering. | That you can buy your entire quantity at that level. |
| Midpoint | A calculation between the best bid and best ask. | An executable order price. |
| Indicative or estimated quote | A preview of what a conversion or order may be worth. | The final amount after the order is submitted and filled. |
| All-in buy/sell quote | A venue’s conversion amount that can incorporate spread and other stated terms. | That it matches the last-trade chart or another venue’s spot quote. |
For a marketable buy, your order generally consumes asks; for a marketable sell, it consumes bids. The difference between the best bid and ask is the spread. If your quantity exceeds the volume available at the best level, the remainder can fill at progressively less favorable levels. The resulting average is affected by spread and slippage, not just the number shown on a chart.
Check the discrepancy in the right order
Use this sequence before placing another order or opening a complaint. It separates a normal market-data difference from a genuine interface or record problem.

- Match the asset and pair exactly. Confirm the base asset, quote currency and market type. Compare BTC/USD with BTC/USD, not BTC/USDT, a perpetual contract, an index, or a conversion screen. Check whether one venue is showing a spot pair while the other shows a derivative.
- Synchronize the time. Note the time zone and timestamp on both displays. Refresh the pages or applications and compare contemporaneous values. A live order book should not be judged against a delayed chart, cached browser tab or an old screenshot.
- Identify the price definition. Look for labels such as last, mark, index, bid, ask, midpoint, indicative, buy or sell. A chart commonly uses last trade, while an instant-buy screen may present an all-in conversion quote. Read the venue’s explanation if the label is unclear.
- Compare the executable side. For a planned purchase, record the best ask; for a sale, record the best bid. Write down the spread as well as the headline price. A midpoint or last trade can look attractive while neither side is actually available at that number.
- Inspect depth at your intended size. Open the order book and check how much is available at each level. Calculate or read the estimated average for your exact quantity. A small order may fit at the best price, while a larger one walks through several levels.
- Check recent activity. Review recent trades and volume. A long flat last-price line on a low-activity pair is less informative than a recently updated, deep book. Sparse trading is a reason to expect a wider or less persistent difference, not proof of manipulation.
- Review order terms. Confirm quantity, fees, minimums, quote currency, order type and any price-protection setting. A marketable order can fill against available liquidity. A limit order sets a maximum buy price or minimum sell price, but it can remain open or fill only partially when no matching liquidity exists.
- Verify the final record. If the order filled, open the completed-order or activity detail and record the execution price, average price, quantity, fees, timestamp and order ID. The preview is an estimate; the completed record is the evidence of what the venue booked.
How order type changes what you pay
Market or marketable orders
A market order asks the venue to execute promptly using available orders. The final average can differ from the displayed last price because it trades with the opposite side of the book. In a thin book, even a moderate quantity may consume several asks or bids. A fast-moving market can also change between preview and the first fill.
Limit orders
A limit buy specifies the highest acceptable price; a limit sell specifies the lowest acceptable price. The order executes only at that limit or a better price when sufficient opposing liquidity exists. It may remain open, partially fill or expire according to the venue’s rules. A limit order controls price conditions but does not guarantee execution.
Conversion and instant-buy screens
These screens may quote a single amount instead of exposing the full order book. The amount can reflect a spread and other displayed terms. Treat it as a venue-specific quote, not as a universal market price. Capture the quote, countdown or expiry information and the confirmation before accepting if the amount matters.

What to save when the result looks wrong
Do not immediately submit a second order. First establish whether the original is pending, partially filled, canceled or complete; a duplicate can leave you with two positions. Preserve:
- Dated screenshots or screen recordings showing the pair, displayed price and account page.
- The exchange name, product or market, quote currency and your time zone.
- Order ID, submission and fill times, quantity, order type and status.
- The confirmation screen, completed-order detail, average execution price and fees.
- Relevant order-book or trade-history views, if the interface makes them available.
- Any error message, price-protection notice or warning shown before submission.
Keep the original files unedited and note when each capture was made. Then use the exchange’s official in-app or website support route. Do not rely on an unsolicited message, social-media account or search advertisement claiming to be support, and never send a private key or recovery phrase.
When a discrepancy may indicate a platform problem
A difference alone is not enough. It becomes more concerning when the exact pair, time and price definition match, the order book shows adequate liquidity at the quoted level, and the completed record conflicts with the confirmation or the venue’s stated terms. Other warning signs include a stale interface that does not refresh while the account API or activity page changes, an order marked complete without a corresponding fill detail, or a quote that cannot be reproduced after repeated refreshes.

Check the venue’s status page and maintenance notices if available, but treat a status message as context rather than proof that your order was correct. Ask support for a timestamped explanation of the quote source, execution levels, fees and any price-protection rule applied. Keep the case number and reply history.

The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework contains specific provisions for covered crypto-asset service providers and trading platforms. Its scope depends on the service, transaction, provider authorization and applicable jurisdiction; it is not a universal rule for every exchange or customer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →MiCA Article 77 states that a covered provider exchanging crypto-assets for funds or other crypto-assets must publish a firm price or a method for determining one, along with applicable limits. It also says client orders are executed at the displayed price when the exchange order is final and that the provider must tell clients the conditions for finality. The practical question is therefore whether your order had reached the legally relevant final state and what price and conditions were displayed at that moment.

MiCA Article 76 addresses operation of a trading platform, including publication of bid and ask prices and available depth, plus the executed transaction’s price, volume and time. ESMA’s Q&A on Article 77 explains that the required information should be publicly available and that quotations should contain elements allowing a party to anticipate the exchange price with certainty. Those provisions can help frame a complaint involving a covered EU service, but they do not automatically decide an individual dispute or apply worldwide.
A practical comparison worksheet
When two venues disagree, fill in the same fields for each one. This prevents an apples-to-oranges comparison and gives support a usable record.
| Field | Venue A | Venue B or reference |
|---|---|---|
| Asset and exact pair | Record base and quote assets. | Record base and quote assets. |
| Product | Spot, conversion, margin or derivative. | Spot, conversion, margin or derivative. |
| Timestamp and data status | Time zone; live, delayed or cached. | Time zone; live, delayed or cached. |
| Price definition | Last, bid, ask, midpoint or indicative. | Last, bid, ask, midpoint or indicative. |
| Best bid and ask | Values and spread at the same moment. | Values and spread at the same moment. |
| Depth for intended quantity | Available levels and estimated average. | Available levels and estimated average. |
| Recent activity | Recent trades and volume indicator. | Recent trades and volume indicator. |
| Order and fees | Type, quantity, protections and charges. | Type, quantity, protections and charges. |
If the fields do not match, the numbers are not measuring the same thing. If they do match and the final order record still conflicts with the displayed terms, attach this worksheet and your evidence to the support request.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing a chart with an executable quote: Last trade and midpoint are reference values; bid and ask determine immediate trading.
- Ignoring quote currency: USD, USDT and other quote assets have different markets and conversion effects.
- Reading only the first order-book level: Your full quantity may execute across multiple levels.
- Assuming a preview is a promise: Estimates can move before completion; use the finished order detail.
- Repeating a pending order: Verify status first to avoid an unintended duplicate fill.
- Treating one venue as the universal market: A single exchange’s last trade does not establish a global price.
- Assuming regulation resolves every dispute: MiCA protections depend on coverage, location, service and the transaction’s circumstances.
