First, open the exchange’s Orders, Open Orders, or transaction-history view and inspect the order itself. Confirm the trading pair, buy or sell side, order type, price, requested quantity, filled quantity or percentage, remaining quantity, fees, timestamp, and current status. Those fields tell you whether a trade has already occurred and whether any remainder is still active.
A partial fill is not a failed trade: the filled portion has executed. The unfilled portion may remain open, tying up reserved funds, or may be cancelable depending on the exchange and order state. Do not place a replacement order or assume cancellation reversed anything until the original order’s final status is clear.
Check the order before taking action
Use the exchange account you placed the order from, rather than relying on a price chart or a notification alone. Open the order-management screen and select the specific order. Coinbase’s order-management guidance, for example, exposes the pair, side, type, price, amount, filled amount, remaining amount, fee, time, and status; other exchanges use different labels but provide similar information.

Save the order ID, a screenshot or export of these fields, and any error text before changing anything. The record is useful if the interface updates while you are troubleshooting.

Understand what “partially filled” means
Coinbase defines a partially filled order as one in which only part of the requested quantity has executed. The remainder can stay active as an open order until it fills or the order’s time-in-force expires. For example, if you requested 2 units and the order shows 0.7 filled and 1.3 remaining, you own the result of the 0.7-unit execution (less any applicable fee); the 1.3 units are still an instruction, not a second trade.
Do not treat the filled portion as cancelable
Canceling an open order stops eligible, unfilled quantity. It does not undo trades that already matched. Coinbase states that completed orders cannot be modified and that only open or pending orders may be canceled. Your exchange may use different status names, so rely on the control shown for this order rather than assuming that every “partial” label can be canceled.
Check whether the remainder is still active
An order can display a partial-fill message while the remaining quantity is still on the order book. If the status is open or otherwise active, the remainder may execute later and continue to hold reserved funds. If the status is completed, there is no remaining order to cancel; if it is canceled, verify the final filled and remaining quantities separately.

There is no cross-exchange time threshold that technically defines a “stuck” order. A pending order may simply be waiting for a match under its conditions. Inspect the exchange’s explanation and the live order details before diagnosing a platform failure.

Price is not meeting available orders
A limit order executes only when compatible orders are available at the required price or better under that exchange’s matching rules. If the market moves away from your limit, the order can remain open indefinitely or until its time-in-force ends. Binance lists the order price as one possible reason an order has not executed.
There are not enough counterparties
Even when the displayed market is near your price, there may not be enough quantity available to complete your request. Binance identifies insufficient counterparties as a possible cause of a pending order. A small fill followed by a long pause is consistent with limited liquidity, but the order details are the authoritative explanation for your account.
Other orders are ahead in the queue
Orders at the same price are generally matched according to the venue’s priority rules. Binance Support explains: “Orders on the order book are filled in a chronological order, so there might be other orders ahead of yours.” This means a price that appears tradable can still leave your order waiting behind earlier instructions.

Available balance is insufficient
Kraken documents a specific partial-execution scenario in which an insufficient account balance prevents the order from completing. Its order details can show the reason. Do not assume that a balance warning on one exchange applies identically elsewhere: check the stated reason, reserved amount, and fee treatment for this order.

Choose whether to leave the remainder open or cancel it
Make this decision only after confirming the filled quantity, remaining quantity, status, and funds being held. The right choice depends on whether preserving the original price matters more than obtaining a faster or different execution.

Compare the visible filled amount and fee with the remaining amount before replacing anything. A replacement sized at the original total can accidentally duplicate the portion that already traded.
Cancel an eligible order safely
- Open the order in Open Orders, Orders, or the equivalent history view.
- Read the current status and confirm the remaining quantity. Do not rely only on a push notification, which may be delayed or incomplete.
- Use the exchange’s own Cancel control for that order. If no cancel control is available, the order may be completed, already canceled, or in a state the exchange does not allow you to change.
- Wait for the interface to show the cancellation result, then refresh the order history.
- Verify the final status, filled quantity, remaining quantity, fee, and available balance. A cancellation request is not proof that the order has stopped matching.
Why cancellation eligibility differs
Cancellation is both exchange- and status-specific. Coinbase says open or pending orders may be canceled while completed orders cannot be modified. Binance’s Spot API documentation limits cancellation to particular new or partially filled states, illustrating why an API client can receive a rejection even when a user expects a cancel to work. Order type, product, region, and the moment matching occurs can change the result.

If the first request is still processing, repeated requests can make it harder to tell which instruction succeeded. Capture the order ID and response message, refresh the official order view, and confirm whether any additional quantity filled before submitting a replacement.

If you replace the order
Recalculate the size from the remaining quantity, not the original request. Check the available balance after fees and any amount still reserved by the old order. Enter the new pair, side, type, price, and amount deliberately, then review the confirmation screen.
Changing the price
A more competitive limit price may improve the chance of a match, but it changes the price you are willing to accept and gives the new order a new place in the queue. Binance suggests canceling and submitting a new order at a more competitive price when an order is not filling; that is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee.
Using a market order
If speed is more important than preserving a limit price, Binance also suggests considering a market order. Treat that as an exchange-specific option. Read the venue’s order preview and execution warnings, confirm the amount, and understand that the resulting price is not fixed in advance. Never submit a market order merely because a limit order is taking longer than expected.

Exchange-specific details to check
Coinbase
Coinbase’s help material distinguishes open, pending, partially filled, and completed states. Its managing-open-orders guidance says funds reserved for an open order are held until the order executes or is canceled. After a successful cancellation, check that the associated funds are released in the account view; do not infer release from the button press alone.

Binance
Binance directs users to Open Orders to check the order price and whether it has matched. Its support guidance lists price, insufficient counterparties, and chronological queue position among possible causes of pending orders. If you cannot cancel an order or funds have not been credited after the interface shows a cancellation, Binance says further support is required.
Kraken
Kraken specifically documents partial execution caused by an “Out of Funds” condition. Open the order details to see whether insufficient balance is the stated reason. The label and remedy may differ for other products or exchanges, so do not transfer Kraken’s explanation to a different venue without checking that venue’s documentation.
When the order says canceled but funds are missing
First refresh the exchange’s order history and account-balance pages and confirm that the canceled order has no remaining quantity. Check whether a small portion filled immediately before cancellation and whether a fee was charged on that fill. The amount returned may therefore differ from the original reservation.
The cited exchange guidance does not establish a universal waiting period for balance release. If the order remains canceled but the funds are not credited, or if the status disappears, keep the order ID, pair, side, amount, timestamps, screenshots, and exact error message. Use only the exchange’s official support channel and follow its case-submission instructions.
What to include in a support request
- Order ID and account identifier requested by the official form (never your password or authentication code).
- Trading pair, side, order type, requested amount, filled amount, remaining amount, and displayed fee.
- The status before and after cancellation, including timestamps and time zone if shown.
- Exact error text, API response, or screenshot of the order page.
- Whether the balance is still reserved and the asset or currency affected.
Do not give login credentials, recovery phrases, private keys, or one-time authentication codes to anyone claiming to provide unofficial help.
Prevent avoidable order problems
- Before submitting, verify the pair, side, order type, price, amount, and displayed total.
- Keep enough available balance for the requested amount and the exchange’s fee treatment.
- Read the selected time-in-force setting; a remainder may stay active until that setting expires.
- After placing an order, confirm it appears in Open Orders or history and save its ID.
- For an order that partially fills, record the filled quantity before canceling or replacing it.
- Use the exchange’s current interface and documentation, because labels and eligible states vary by product, region, and order type.
The Bottom Line
A partial fill means a trade has already happened and only the remainder is undecided. Inspect the exact status and quantities, then either leave the remainder active or use the exchange’s eligible cancel control. Verify the final status and balance; if cancellation fails or funds remain missing, escalate through official support with the order evidence.
