First find out whether the exchange has actually broadcast your withdrawal. Open the withdrawal record, note the asset, network, amount, time, status and transaction ID (TxID), then check the exchange’s current notice for that exact asset and network. A TxID lets you inspect the transfer on the correct blockchain explorer; no TxID means an explorer cannot prove that the exchange sent anything. If the chain confirms the transfer but the destination has not credited it, contact the receiving platform. If the withdrawal is held, paused or has no TxID, use the sending exchange’s official support process instead of retrying the transfer.
Why “pending” does not identify the problem
Crypto exchanges use their own status labels. The word pending can describe internal processing, a transaction waiting to be sent, a transaction waiting for confirmations, or a review that requires staff action. It is not enough to tell whether the delay is at the exchange, on the blockchain or at the receiving service.
Kraken’s withdrawal definitions illustrate the distinctions: its process separates early internal handling, sending a transaction to a payment gateway, broadcasting the transaction to the network, waiting for confirmation and placing a withdrawal on manual hold. Those labels are Kraken-specific examples, not a universal vocabulary. Read the definition attached to your exchange’s status and inspect the individual withdrawal record.

Coinbase’s guidance on pending transactions also points to network synchronization and insufficient confirmations as possible causes. The practical dividing line remains whether a transaction appears on the selected blockchain, not the label shown in the exchange app.

Step-by-step: locate the delay before taking action
1. Record the exact withdrawal details
- Open the exchange account’s withdrawal or transfer history.
- Record the asset, selected network, destination address or memo information shown, amount, submission time, current status and any displayed TxID.
- Open the exchange’s official status, maintenance or incident page and filter your check mentally to that asset and network. A notice affecting one network does not establish that every asset or withdrawal service is paused.
- Read any account message requesting identity verification, security confirmation or another review step.
Status pages change. Kraken’s live status information, for example, can show network-specific pauses or possible delays at one point in time. Treat such a page as a current operating notice, not a promise about another exchange or a later hour.
2. Decide whether the exchange broadcast the transaction
If a TxID is shown, the exchange has at least supplied an identifier for a blockchain transaction. If no TxID exists, the exchange may still be processing, reviewing or preparing the withdrawal; an explorer cannot establish that the funds were sent.
Kraken defines Sending as a withdrawal transaction broadcast to the network and waiting for a blockchain confirmation. It defines On hold as a withdrawal that has been held for manual checking by support staff. Its documentation also says cancellation can be requested only at the Initiated and Pending stages, and a requested cancellation is not guaranteed. These are examples of one exchange’s workflow. Do not assume that another exchange uses the same labels or permits cancellation at the same point.

3. Check a TxID on the right explorer
Copy the TxID exactly and search it on an explorer for the blockchain and network selected in the withdrawal form. A Bitcoin transaction, an Ethereum transaction and a token transfer on another supported network are not interchangeable searches. Selecting an explorer for the wrong chain can make a valid transfer appear to be missing.
- Unconfirmed: The transaction is visible on the chain but has not received the required confirmations. Network activity and the exchange’s confirmation policy determine how long this takes. Follow the exchange’s guidance and monitor the same transaction rather than creating another withdrawal.
- Confirmed: The blockchain records the transfer as successful. If the destination balance is still unchanged, the receiving platform or wallet is the next party to contact.
- Not found: Recheck the copied TxID and network. If the identifier is correct and still absent, contact the sending exchange through its official support channel; an explorer cannot force an exchange to broadcast a transaction.
Binance’s support guidance uses the same practical split: wait when the explorer shows an unconfirmed transaction, and contact the receiving platform when the explorer shows confirmation but the funds have not arrived.
4. If there is no TxID or the withdrawal is on hold
Review the exchange’s notices and account messages for wallet maintenance, a network upgrade, an asset-specific suspension, a security review, identity verification or another required action. Binance lists network upgrades, wallet maintenance, congestion and hot-wallet balance management among possible reasons for a withdrawal suspension or delay. Those explanations describe Binance’s operations and should not be treated as a claim about every exchange.

For a manual hold, use the exchange’s logged-in support route and provide the withdrawal reference or history details requested. Complete only the verification steps displayed inside the account or on the exchange’s official support site. A blockchain explorer cannot clear an account-level restriction.
5. If the transaction is confirmed but the balance is missing
Contact the receiving exchange, wallet provider or other destination service with the TxID, asset, network, amount and destination details. Ask it to trace the deposit using the confirmed transaction. Also verify that the destination supports the exact asset on the exact network you selected. A platform may support a token on one network but not another.
Binance warns that an unsupported asset or network can result in unrecoverable loss. A confirmed on-chain transfer cannot simply be reversed by the sending exchange, so do not send a second transaction to “fix” the first one until the destination has reviewed it.

Blockchain congestion and confirmation requirements
After broadcast, a transaction may wait for confirmation while the network processes other transactions. Coinbase identifies insufficient confirmations and synchronization problems as causes of a pending transaction. The required number of confirmations and the elapsed time vary by network and by the exchange’s policy; there is no universal delay estimate.

Wallet maintenance or a network upgrade
An exchange may disable withdrawals for a particular asset or network while its wallet software is upgraded, resynchronized or otherwise maintained. The pause can be limited to one network even when trading and withdrawals for other networks continue. Check the current notice instead of assuming that a platform-wide outage exists.
Account security or compliance review
Exchanges can hold a withdrawal for a manual security, identity or compliance check. The account may show a prompt for additional information, or support may need to review the withdrawal before it is released. This condition exists outside the blockchain; waiting for confirmations will not resolve it.
Exchange wallet operations and liquidity
Binance lists hot-wallet balance management across networks as a possible operational source of delay. An exchange may need to rebalance its wallets before processing withdrawals. This is an exchange-side explanation, not evidence that the public blockchain is congested.

Destination processing or incompatibility
A confirmed transfer can remain absent from the recipient’s displayed balance while the destination performs its own deposit processing. An unsupported network, missing memo or tag, or unsupported asset can create a crediting problem even though the blockchain transaction succeeded. The receiving service must investigate that stage.

How to interpret common exchange statuses
Status names differ, so use the exchange’s own help text as the authority. The following interpretations are examples drawn from Kraken’s published definitions:
- Initiated: An early stage in which the withdrawal may still be eligible for a cancellation request under that exchange’s rules.
- Pending: An internal processing stage in the exchange’s workflow; it does not by itself prove broadcast or congestion.
- Sending: Kraken’s term for a transaction broadcast to the network and waiting for confirmation.
- On hold: Kraken’s term for a withdrawal requiring manual support review.
If your exchange uses different labels, do not map them automatically to these examples. Read the status definition attached to the withdrawal and compare it with the presence or absence of a TxID.
What not to do while a withdrawal is delayed
- Do not submit the same withdrawal again merely because the first one says pending. If the first transaction is later broadcast, you could create a duplicate payment.
- Do not switch networks as a workaround. A different network does not bypass an account review or a wallet maintenance pause.
- Do not send a replacement to a new address until you know whether the original transaction exists and what the destination service recommends.
- Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery” or “unlock” contact. Use the exchange’s official account and support channels, and never disclose passwords, recovery phrases or authentication codes.
- Do not assume a cancellation succeeded. Even where an exchange accepts a cancellation request at an early status, the request may not stop a transaction already moving through its process.
How to contact support efficiently and safely
- Open support from the exchange’s official website or logged-in app, not from a message or social-media account that contacted you first.
- Provide the withdrawal ID, asset, network, amount, submission time, current status and TxID if one exists.
- State the diagnostic result clearly: “No TxID is shown,” “The TxID is unconfirmed,” or “The TxID is confirmed but the destination has not credited it.”
- Attach only the information requested through the official channel. Redact passwords, recovery phrases, private keys, one-time codes and unrelated personal data.
- Follow any account-specific verification request inside the exchange’s documented process. If the exchange gives an availability estimate, treat it as an estimate tied to that asset, network and current maintenance or review condition.
For a confirmed transaction that is missing at the destination, open a case with the receiving platform as well. Include the same TxID and network details so the recipient can trace its deposit system. For an exchange-side hold or a missing TxID, the sending exchange remains the appropriate first contact.
How long should you wait?
No single waiting period applies to every exchange, asset or network. Timing depends on whether the exchange has broadcast the transaction, the network’s confirmation requirements, maintenance completion, account review and the receiving platform’s deposit process. Official notices may provide an estimate, but actual availability can change when maintenance or verification takes longer than expected.
Use the status sequence to decide what to do rather than an arbitrary number of hours: check notices first, inspect the TxID when present, wait only when the chain shows an unconfirmed transaction, and escalate to the relevant platform when the chain shows confirmation or the exchange shows a hold.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact asset and network?
- Have you saved the withdrawal amount, time, status and reference?
- Does the exchange show a TxID?
- If yes, did you check that TxID on the explorer for the selected network?
- Is the transaction unconfirmed, confirmed, or not found?
- If confirmed, does the destination support that asset and network?
- If there is no TxID or the withdrawal is on hold, have you checked the exchange’s current notice and account prompts?
- Are you using only official support channels and withholding credentials and recovery information?
Bottom line
A paused withdrawal is not automatically a congested blockchain. The reliable sequence is to identify the asset and network, read the exchange’s current notice, determine whether a TxID exists, inspect that transaction on the correct explorer, and contact the party responsible for the stage where the delay occurs. Never duplicate the transfer or change networks until the first withdrawal’s status and destination compatibility are clear.
