If your Chromebook touchscreen or tablet hinge stops responding, follow Google’s order: clean the screen, perform the hardware reset specified for your exact model, test again, and only then consider a factory reset. A factory reset erases local files, including everything in Downloads, so back up first. If the problem remains, contact the Chromebook manufacturer; do not open the hinge or try to adjust internal magnets.
Start with the least disruptive fix
A nonresponsive touchscreen and a convertible Chromebook that will not enter tablet mode can have different causes. Dust or moisture can interfere with touch. A temporary hardware fault can clear after a hardware reset. A hinge-position sensor, digitizer, cable, or other component may need service. The symptoms alone do not prove which part has failed.
Use this sequence and test touch or tablet mode after every step. Stop when the problem is resolved.

Before you touch the hinge or reset anything
- Move the Chromebook to a stable, dry surface and disconnect accessories that could press against the display or hinge.
- If the display is cracked, the hinge is visibly loose, or the chassis is separating, do not force the screen through its range of motion. Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair support instead.
- Use the touchpad or keyboard to save work and copy important files from local storage. A factory reset will remove local files even if the touchscreen is still usable.
- Identify the exact model name and model number. Reset controls and procedures vary between convertible Chromebooks and tablet-form devices.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, ask the administrator before any factory reset. Managed devices can require the administrator to perform or authorize the reset.
Step 1: clean the touchscreen correctly
Google’s first touchscreen troubleshooting step is simply to remove dust or dirt. This is a safe check for a screen that misses taps, responds only in some areas, or appears not to respond at all.

Cleaning procedure
- Shut down the Chromebook if you can do so normally. If it is still running, close programs and save work first.
- Use a soft, clean, dry cloth, such as a microfiber cloth intended for screens.
- Wipe gently across the entire touch surface, paying attention to edges and corners where debris can collect.
- Remove any case, screen protector or accessory that is pressing on the display, then try touch input again.
Do not pour or spray liquid onto the screen, push hard on a damaged panel, or treat a cleaning cloth as a repair for a confirmed digitizer or hinge failure. A cloth is an optional cleaning aid, not a way to repair internal components.
Test before moving on
Open a simple app or page and try taps, swipes and an on-screen keyboard key. Check several areas of the display rather than testing only one icon. If touch works after cleaning, monitor it; recurring failures suggest that support may still be needed.
Step 2: perform the model-specific hardware reset
If cleaning does not restore touch, Google’s next step is a Chromebook hardware reset. There is no single button combination that is safe to prescribe for every Chromebook. The correct procedure depends on the exact model and on whether the device is a convertible Chromebook or a tablet.

Find the correct procedure
- Record the manufacturer, model name and model number from the label, packaging, original receipt or the Chromebook’s settings/about information. If the screen is unusable, look for the identification label on the underside or use the documentation that came with the device.
- Use Google’s Chromebook hardware-reset instructions or the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model.
- Follow only the instructions for your form factor. A convertible and a tablet may use different controls, and applying an unrelated key sequence can leave you unsure whether the reset completed.
- After the reset, start the Chromebook normally and test the touchscreen and hinge behavior again.
A hardware reset is not the same as a factory reset. The purpose here is to reinitialize hardware, not to wipe the Chromebook. Nevertheless, save work first and follow the model documentation precisely.
What to record if the reset does not help
Note whether the screen never registers touch, registers only some gestures, or works intermittently. Also note whether the touchpad and keyboard still work, whether the failure began after an update or physical incident, and whether the Chromebook changes modes when you fold it. These observations help support staff narrow the problem, but none of them alone establishes the cause.
Step 3: check touchscreen input and tablet mode separately
A convertible Chromebook has two related but distinct behaviors: touch input on the panel and automatic recognition of the device’s physical orientation. Test them independently so a mode problem is not mistaken for a dead touchscreen.

If touch input is the problem
- Try taps and swipes in multiple areas of the display.
- Use the touchpad or keyboard to confirm that the Chromebook itself is still operating.
- Try the on-screen keyboard if it appears; a few missed keys may indicate a localized touch area rather than a complete failure.
- Test again after the cleaning and hardware-reset steps, not only immediately after a reboot.
If the touchpad and keyboard work while the panel never responds, that pattern is useful information for the manufacturer. It is not, by itself, proof that a particular part must be replaced.

On supported convertible models, folding the display over the hinge is expected to switch the Chromebook into tablet mode. The on-screen keyboard should open automatically when text entry is needed. If the Chromebook remains in laptop mode, the behavior indicates that mode detection is not working as expected, but the official description does not identify a universal failed component.
Do not force the hinge past its normal stop, repeatedly snap the display back and forth, or remove the display bezel. A Google Chromebook Community product expert has mentioned small magnets in tablet-mode sensing when discussing a convertible stuck in tablet mode. That is anecdotal community advice, not a manufacturer diagnosis; it is not a reason to open the device, reposition magnets or replace parts yourself.

Use the mode symptom as support evidence
Tell support exactly what happens when you rotate the display: whether the image rotates, whether the keyboard remains active, whether the on-screen keyboard appears, and whether the behavior is consistent at one hinge angle. Describe the symptom without claiming a diagnosis such as “the magnet is broken.”

Google places a factory reset after cleaning and a hardware reset. On a Chromebook this is commonly called Powerwash. It removes local data from the device, including files in the Downloads folder, so it is a last software troubleshooting step rather than a routine restart.

- Use the touchpad or keyboard to copy documents, photos, downloads and other files stored locally to approved cloud storage or external storage.
- Check any app-specific folders or offline files; do not assume that a file is synchronized merely because you normally use a cloud service.
- Confirm that you know the account credentials and any administrator contact needed to set the Chromebook up again.
- If the device is managed by a school or employer, stop and contact the administrator. They may need to handle the reset and enrollment.
Use the current factory-reset instructions for your Chromebook and confirm the warning that local data will be erased before proceeding. If you cannot back up important files because the display or input is unusable, seek manufacturer or authorized service first.

When a factory reset is unlikely to help
Powerwash can remove a software configuration problem, but it cannot repair a physically damaged hinge, a failed mode sensor, a broken display cable or a defective touch digitizer. If the Chromebook was dropped, the hinge is loose, or touch remains completely dead after the hardware reset, obtain a diagnosis before repeatedly erasing the device.
What Chromebook Diagnostics can—and cannot—tell you
ChromeOS Diagnostics provides checks for areas such as the battery, CPU, memory and Wi-Fi. Google’s Diagnostics overview does not list a touchscreen test or a hinge-position test. Therefore, a clean Diagnostics result cannot confirm that the digitizer or tablet-mode sensor is healthy, and the app should not be presented as a way to prove a hinge failure.
You can still use the available checks to document unrelated symptoms—for example, whether the Chromebook is otherwise operating normally—and provide those results to support. Do not interpret the absence of a touchscreen test as evidence that touch hardware is working.
When to contact the Chromebook manufacturer
Google’s official guidance is direct: “If these steps don’t fix the problem, contact your Chromebook manufacturer.” Escalate after cleaning and the model-appropriate hardware reset; if you perform a Powerwash, do so only after protecting local data and checking management requirements.
Prepare a useful support report
- Manufacturer, exact model and model number.
- Whether the device is a convertible Chromebook or a tablet.
- When the problem began and whether touch ever worked normally.
- Whether the Chromebook was recently updated, dropped, bent, exposed to liquid or transported in a way that could stress the hinge. These events are clues, not proof of the cause.
- Whether the touchpad, keyboard, display rotation and on-screen keyboard still work.
- Which steps you completed: screen cleaning, the model-specific hardware reset and, if applicable, a factory reset.
- Photos or a short video showing a loose hinge, a cracked panel or the failure to enter tablet mode, if doing so is safe.
Choose repair carefully
Ask for a diagnosis before approving a screen, hinge or digitizer replacement. Compare repair options using the exact model’s compatibility, the provider’s credentials, warranty implications and the quoted cost. Repair prices and warranty coverage are not universal; they depend on brand, model, region, warranty status and the diagnosed fault. Do not let a generic part number or a forum suggestion determine the repair.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the test between steps: If you clean, reset and Powerwash at once, you lose the ability to tell which action helped.
- Using a guessed reset shortcut: Procedures differ by model and form factor. Use the exact instructions for your Chromebook.
- Powerwashing without a backup: Local files, including Downloads, are erased.
- Resetting a managed device independently: A school or workplace administrator may need to perform or authorize the reset.
- Opening the hinge to inspect magnets or cables: Community comments are not repair instructions, and opening the chassis can create additional damage or affect service eligibility.
- Assuming Diagnostics covers touch: The documented checks do not include a touchscreen or hinge-position test.
The practical decision
Clean the screen first, then use the exact model’s hardware-reset procedure and test again. Treat Powerwash as a later, data-destructive step and involve an administrator for managed Chromebooks. If touch input or tablet-mode switching still fails, give the manufacturer a complete symptom history and request a model-specific diagnosis rather than attempting hinge or digitizer work yourself.
