A blockchain domain that fails in a browser is usually not a single DNS problem. First identify the suffix and what you expect the name to do: open a decentralized website, return a wallet or other record, or connect a conventional DNS domain that was imported into ENS. Each path uses different software, records and checks.
Work through browser or resolver support, then inspect the domain’s website/content record and gateway. If the name is a DNS domain imported into ENS, switch to the DNSSEC and TXT-record checks instead. A setting that fixes one naming system will not automatically fix another.
Start by defining what “resolve” should mean
“Blockchain domain” describes several naming systems rather than one universal directory. The suffix is your first diagnostic clue, but the intended result matters just as much. A browser navigation failure may occur even when the name itself resolves correctly, because the domain can point to a wallet address, an IPFS hash or another record instead of a web page.

Unstoppable Domains’ resolution library documents decentralized names that can resolve to several record types, including payment addresses and IPFS hashes: https://github.com/unstoppabledomains/resolution. Its records reference separates decentralized-website and DNS records, which is why a valid name does not prove that a browser destination is available: https://docs.unstoppabledomains.com/web3/resolution/records-reference.

Follow this diagnostic sequence
1. Record the complete name and the intended result
Copy the full domain exactly, including its suffix, and write down what you expected to happen. “Open a site,” “show the owner’s payment address” and “use my normal DNS website” are different tests. Also note whether you are using a browser directly, a browser extension, a wallet, a gateway URL or a separate resolver application.
Keep the exact error message. “Address not found,” “unsupported domain,” a gateway timeout and a page that loads without content indicate different failure points. Do not change several settings before recording the original symptom; otherwise you may lose the clue that identifies the failing layer.
2. Verify support for the exact suffix
Browser compatibility is a plausible cause even when the domain record is correct. Check the browser vendor’s current documentation and the documentation for any extension or resolver you are using. Support for one blockchain naming system does not establish support for another, and support can change between browser versions.

The same documentation lists gateway routes for browsers without native support: https://docs.ens.domains/dweb/intro/. Treat those statements as documentation for that page’s stated context, not as a promise about every current release. If your browser cannot handle the suffix, use a documented compatible browser, an extension that explicitly supports that suffix, or the naming system’s gateway.

Do not assume that typing a blockchain name into the normal address bar invokes a blockchain resolver. In many setups, ordinary address-bar navigation still uses conventional DNS unless the browser, extension or gateway intercepts the name.
3. Separate name resolution from website content
A resolver can find a domain while the requested site remains unavailable. Once support is confirmed, inspect the domain’s website or content record. ENS describes publishing a contenthash and reaching decentralized sites through gateways; an absent, outdated or malformed content record can therefore produce a blank page or gateway error even though the name is valid.
Check whether the record points to the expected content type and whether that content is still available at its storage destination. An IPFS hash, for example, identifies content but does not guarantee that a gateway can currently retrieve it. Try the gateway route documented by the naming system rather than adding an arbitrary gateway domain. If one gateway fails, a second documented gateway can help distinguish gateway availability from a bad record.

4. Handle an ENS DNS import as a separate branch
If the name is a normal DNS domain imported into ENS, do not troubleshoot it as though it were a native decentralized suffix. The association depends on the underlying DNS zone. ENS Support says to publish the exact TXT record requested for the import at the DNS host and to verify DNSSEC. Copy the value exactly as shown by ENS; an extra character, wrong host name or quotation-mark mistake can prevent detection.
DNS changes can take 10–30 minutes to propagate. After changing the record, wait through that interval, then refresh the ENS import check and verify the public DNS response again. ENS identifies DNSSEC as a likely issue when the TXT record is correct but still is not detected after 30 minutes. Its troubleshooting guidance is here: https://support.ens.domains/en/articles/13455689-fix-dns-import-errors.
Keep the underlying DNS registration and zone active. Whoever controls that DNS domain can affect the imported ENS association, so letting the registration lapse or moving DNS providers without recreating the required record can break the relationship. ENS also documents a gasless DNS-import path and its requirements here: https://support.ens.domains/en/articles/8834820-gasless-dns-import.

Some Web3 domain managers expose a switch that controls whether a name also works through traditional DNS. For an Unstoppable Domains-managed DNS name, inspect the DNS_RESOLUTION flag. The provider defines an enabled flag as allowing resolution through traditional DNS; when disabled, the name will not resolve through DNS even though it may still work in Web3 environments. This is a provider-specific setting, not a universal blockchain-domain control. The flag definitions are documented at https://support.unstoppabledomains.com/support/solutions/articles/48001272943-what-are-dns-domain-flags-and-what-do-they-mean-.

After changing the flag, test the intended path again. Enabling traditional DNS will not create a decentralized website record, and disabling it does not necessarily remove Web3 records; it changes the DNS route.
Match the symptom to the failing layer
| Symptom | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| The browser immediately says the domain is unsupported or cannot be found. | Confirm that the browser, extension or gateway supports the exact suffix. |
| A resolver returns a name, but the browser shows no site. | Inspect the website/content record and test the documented gateway. |
| A decentralized name returns an address but not a page. | Verify that a website record exists; address resolution alone is not web hosting. |
| An ENS DNS import remains pending after the TXT record was added. | Wait 10–30 minutes, recheck the exact TXT value and investigate DNSSEC. |
| A regular DNS lookup fails while Web3 use still works. | Check the provider’s DNS-resolution setting, including DNS_RESOLUTION where applicable. |
| A gateway times out or returns missing content. | Check the content hash or destination availability, then try another gateway documented by the naming system. |
How the resolution path fits together
Conventional DNS asks DNS servers for an address record and then connects to that address. A blockchain naming system can instead map a name to structured records held or referenced by that system. A resolver library, wallet, browser extension or native browser feature interprets those records. For a decentralized site, the result commonly identifies content such as an IPFS hash, after which a gateway retrieves and serves it to the browser.
That chain creates several independent failure points: the browser may not recognize the suffix; the resolver may not support the particular record type; the name may lack a website/content record; the content may be unavailable; or the gateway may be unreachable. Testing each layer in order is faster than repeatedly refreshing the same browser tab.

Practical recovery playbooks
When you are trying to open a decentralized website
- Copy the full name and identify its suffix.
- Confirm that your browser or extension explicitly supports that suffix, or choose a documented gateway route.
- Resolve the name with the supported route and inspect the website/content record.
- Confirm that the record contains the expected content identifier, such as a content hash.
- Open the identifier through the naming system’s documented gateway and compare the result with the original browser error.
If the resolver can return a record but the gateway cannot retrieve the content, the domain registration is not necessarily at fault. The content record or the storage and gateway path needs attention.
When you are checking a payment or other address record
- Use a resolver or wallet that supports the exact naming system and record type.
- Request the address record rather than navigating to the name as though it were a website.
- Check the returned network or asset type before sending anything.
A name can be perfectly healthy for address resolution while having no browser-accessible site. Treat those as separate capabilities.
When you imported a DNS domain into ENS
- Open the DNS provider’s management page for the exact domain.
- Publish the TXT record exactly as ENS specifies.
- Confirm DNSSEC is enabled and valid for the zone.
- Wait 10–30 minutes for propagation, then refresh the ENS import check.
- If detection still fails, recheck the host name and value character by character and investigate DNSSEC.
Do not replace a missing or incorrect DNS record with a browser extension. The import association is proven through DNS and DNSSEC.

Information to collect before asking for help
If the checks above do not identify the problem, provide the minimum facts needed for a reproducible diagnosis:
- The complete domain and suffix.
- The browser name and version, plus any extension, wallet or resolver being used.
- Whether you want a website, an address/name lookup or an imported DNS name.
- The exact error text and whether it appears immediately or after a gateway loads.
- For an ENS DNS import, when the TXT record was published, its exact host and value, and the DNSSEC status.
- For a provider-managed DNS name, whether the provider’s DNS-resolution flag is enabled.
Without the suffix, intended record type and failing route, a specific repair recommendation would be guesswork. Sharing those details lets support determine whether the issue is compatibility, record configuration, propagation, content availability or a gateway.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every blockchain domain is an ENS name. The suffix identifies a naming system, and support for one does not transfer to another.
- Treating a wallet record as a website. Address resolution does not imply that a web page exists.
- Changing DNS settings for a native decentralized name. DNS checks apply to conventional DNS names and DNS-imported ENS associations.
- Declaring failure immediately after a DNS edit. ENS Support gives a 10–30 minute propagation window before deeper investigation.
- Assuming one browser toggle fixes everything. Browser support, resolver support, content records and gateways are separate layers.
- Letting the underlying DNS domain lapse after an ENS import. Control of that DNS zone affects the imported association.
