First determine whether you used a self-custody wallet or an exchange account. A self-custody wallet can usually be restored only with its recovery phrase or wallet backup, plus any additional passphrase. An exchange account must be recovered through that exchange’s official sign-in process. If your self-custody device, backup and passphrase are all unavailable, the bitcoin may be permanently inaccessible.
Do not enter a recovery phrase, private key, PIN or passphrase into a website, support form, chat message or ordinary app. Legitimate support cannot recreate missing private keys and will not need your secret words.
Identify the kind of wallet you lost
The recovery route depends on who controls the keys. A wallet application or hardware wallet used for self-custody gives you control of the private keys. An exchange or other custodian holds the keys and gives you an account-recovery process instead. Password-reset instructions for an exchange do not recover a self-custody wallet, and a seed phrase cannot reset an exchange login.

You may have used a phone, desktop application, browser extension or hardware device that showed a recovery phrase during setup. That phrase, an exported wallet backup file and any optional passphrase are the important recovery materials. The device itself is replaceable if a compatible backup exists.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Custodial exchange account
If you signed in with an email address, username, password and possibly two-factor authentication, start at the exchange’s independently verified official website or app. Use its published account-recovery, identity-verification and device-change procedures. There is no single recovery method that applies to every exchange, so do not follow instructions sent by an unsolicited “recovery agent.”
| What you used | What controls access | First action | What can be recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-custody wallet | Your recovery phrase or wallet backup, with any added passphrase | Find the original backup and identify the wallet’s standard and settings | The wallet can be restored if the compatible backup and required credentials are available |
| Self-custody hardware wallet | The device protects keys, but the backup restores them elsewhere | Check whether the device is lost, damaged, locked by a PIN or still usable | A replacement device can restore a compatible backup; a replacement device cannot invent a missing backup |
| Exchange or custodian | The provider’s account system and identity checks | Use only the provider’s verified account-recovery page or app | Access depends on the provider’s recovery rules and evidence of account ownership |
Inventory every piece of access before changing anything
Write down what is still available without copying secret words into a computer or sending them to anyone. Your inventory should include:
- The original phone, computer or hardware wallet, and whether it still powers on and opens the wallet.
- The recovery phrase, seed words, encrypted wallet-backup file or other backup deliberately created during setup.
- An additional passphrase, sometimes called a hidden-wallet or 25th-word passphrase. It is separate from the ordinary seed.
- A hardware-wallet PIN, application password, encryption password or two-factor authentication method.
- The wallet’s name and version, hardware model, network, account type, multisignature arrangement and any unusual address or derivation setting you selected.
- Any provider-specific backup that you deliberately enabled. For example, Bitcoin.com describes restoration from a manually recorded recovery phrase or its app’s optional cloud backup; that feature should not be assumed to exist in another wallet.
Do not photograph, email or paste the phrase while making this inventory. A list of partial words can still help a thief target you, so keep notes offline and secure.
Choose the recovery path that matches your situation
The device is lost or damaged, but the backup is available
A compatible wallet or replacement hardware device can restore the existing wallet. Compatibility matters: the backup standard, word count, passphrase setting, account configuration and multisignature arrangement must match the original setup.

Trezor’s documentation describes 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and, on some devices, 20-word SLIP39 backups. Those are Trezor-specific examples, not a universal rule for every wallet. Ledger’s guidance describes restoring keys with a 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase. Follow the current instructions for the exact wallet model rather than combining steps from different manufacturers.
- Obtain a replacement or spare device only from a trustworthy channel, and verify its authenticity using the maker’s current instructions.
- Install the wallet maker’s official software from a verified source, if the recovery process requires it. Do not use a search-advertisement support page or a link sent by a stranger.
- Choose the option labelled something like “restore,” “recover” or “I already have a wallet,” not “create new wallet.”
- Enter the backup only where the official procedure instructs you. Trezor says to enter backup words when prompted by the physical device and confirms that they should not be typed into a website or ordinary application.
- Restore the same optional passphrase, account and derivation settings if you used them. A correct seed with the wrong passphrase can open a different, apparently empty wallet.
- Confirm that receiving addresses and balances match records you trust before attempting a transaction. If anything differs, stop and consult the wallet maker’s official documentation without revealing the backup.
A forgotten hardware-wallet PIN is different from a missing seed. Some devices use a reset procedure that erases the device and then restore the wallet from the correct backup. Never reset first unless you have verified that the backup and any additional passphrase are available.
The original device still works, but the written backup is missing
This is the situation in which preserving the device matters most. Do not wipe, reset, update, trade in or discard it. Keep it powered and protected, and use the wallet’s official backup or recovery-check feature while the wallet remains accessible.
Backup behavior differs by wallet. Bitcoin.org notes that backup requirements depend on the wallet and that some wallets require repeated backups, while many modern deterministic wallets use one recovery phrase. Trezor says its backup words are displayed during setup; do not assume an existing device can reveal them later. If the provider offers an on-device backup verification or export process, follow that exact procedure and record the result offline in a secure location.

If no safe backup function exists but the wallet can authorize transactions, the provider’s documentation may explain how to move funds to a newly created wallet with a newly secured backup. Do not follow a generic transfer recipe: check the receiving address on the trusted device, account for network fees, and consider a small test transaction only when the wallet’s instructions and your security situation make that appropriate.
The seed phrase is available, but the restored wallet appears empty
An empty balance does not prove that the phrase is invalid. Check the original wallet’s official recovery documentation for differences in:
- Additional passphrase or hidden-wallet setting.
- BIP39, SLIP39 or another backup format.
- Account type, address format, network or derivation path.
- Single-signature versus multisignature configuration.
- The account index or wallet profile selected after restoration.
Use only the wallet maker’s documented options. Do not upload the phrase to a “seed checker,” blockchain search service or support chat. If the phrase was ever photographed, stored in cloud storage, typed into an untrusted device or disclosed to another person, treat it as compromised. After confirming the destination wallet and security procedure, move funds to a newly generated wallet whose backup has never been exposed.

The backup, passphrase and original device are all unavailable
Set expectations plainly: self-custody has no central recovery department. Bitcoin Core documentation distinguishes the seed from the wallet passphrase and warns that losing a passphrase can permanently block access to the wallet it protects. Ledger states that it cannot recover a lost phrase or PIN after a reset or when the device is inaccessible. Trezor’s terms similarly warn that losing both the wallet backup and access to a lost or permanently damaged device can make the funds inaccessible.

You can search your own secure records for a legitimately created offline backup, but do not give partial words, device access or a remote desktop session to anyone promising guaranteed recovery. Brute-force services cannot be treated as a general solution, and handing over fragments creates an immediate theft risk.
The exchange account is inaccessible
Go directly to the exchange’s verified website or app and use its account-recovery path. You may be asked to reset a password, replace a lost authenticator, confirm an email address or complete identity checks. Contact details should come from the provider’s published site, not from a social-media reply or unsolicited message.
An exchange may be able to restore an account because it controls the account records; it cannot use a self-custody seed phrase to recover a different wallet. Conversely, a self-custody wallet maker cannot reset an exchange password.

- Never disclose a recovery phrase, private key, PIN, encryption password or additional passphrase to support staff, friends, “recovery experts” or anyone online.
- Never type seed words into an ordinary website, browser form, messaging app or untrusted desktop or mobile application. Trezor’s official guidance says, “Never type your words into any app or website to verify this.”
- Never install remote-access software because a stranger says it is required to recover funds.
- Never send bitcoin as a fee to unlock a wallet. Bitcoin.org states that “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for your recovery phrase or require payment in bitcoin to ‘unlock’ funds.”
- Assume every unsolicited direct message, phone call or advertisement offering guaranteed recovery is fraudulent until independently verified through the provider’s official site.
- Remember that bitcoin transactions are irreversible. Verify the destination address on a trusted device and do not rush a transfer because someone is pressuring you.
Trezor’s support warning is unambiguous: “We will never ask you for your wallet backup, even if you are speaking with our customer support.” A real support representative can explain menus and procedures without seeing your secret.
Why a correct-looking backup can still fail
An extra passphrase creates a different wallet
A seed phrase and an additional passphrase are not interchangeable. A passphrase changes the derived keys; the same words with a different passphrase can produce a completely different wallet with no balance. If you cannot remember the exact passphrase, repeated guesses are the only self-directed option, and there is no provider master key that bypasses it.
The wallet configuration does not match
Different applications can interpret the same backup using different standards, account types or derivation settings. Multisignature wallets also require the appropriate set of signing keys and configuration. Record the original wallet model and settings before trying alternatives, and use the maker’s documentation for any supported migration.
The phrase was never backed up
Keys created before a backup can be lost permanently if the only device holding them fails or is erased. A blockchain record can show that an address received bitcoin, but it cannot recreate the private key needed to spend it.
What to do after access is restored
- Check that the restored wallet shows the expected accounts and addresses before moving funds.
- If the phrase or passphrase may have been exposed, create a new wallet on a trusted, uncompromised device and back it up before transferring funds.
- Store the new backup offline according to the wallet maker’s instructions. Consider more than one secure physical location and durable media; a metal seed-phrase backup plate can help protect against fire or water, but it cannot recreate a phrase that is already missing.
- For a transfer, verify the address on the trusted signing device, account for the current network fee shown by the wallet, and use a small test transaction when appropriate.
- After the test confirms the intended destination, complete any remaining transfer and keep records that do not reveal secret material.
A replacement hardware wallet is useful only when you possess a compatible, valid backup. Buying new hardware, installing a recovery app or searching the blockchain does not recover a missing seed or forgotten passphrase.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next lockout
- Write the recovery phrase exactly as displayed and verify it using the wallet’s official backup-check procedure.
- Keep the primary copy offline and protected from unauthorized access, fire and water. Bitcoin.org advises maintaining multiple secure physical backup locations.
- Do not store a seed phrase as a screenshot, photo, email or unencrypted cloud document. If a provider explicitly supports an encrypted backup feature, follow that provider’s instructions and understand what it protects.
- Document the wallet model, backup standard, account type and whether an additional passphrase exists, without writing the passphrase where an attacker could connect it to the seed.
- Review the recovery procedure before a device fails, using only current official documentation.
- Keep exchange-account email, password and two-factor recovery methods current, but never treat exchange credentials as a substitute for a self-custody backup.
